I'm picking up used CDs for $1-$5 these days. Since I still love physical media, it's an economical way to continue to build my collection. $30-$40 for new records is not within my budget. And CDs, played on a decent system, sound at least as good as vinyl, if not better, to my ears. But if you can afford the price of new records these days, go for it and enjoy yourselves. And yes, take care of those records you just spent a fortune on!

yep, im the same boat, heck ill even spend $10 on a new cd. I recently up'd my CD game with a new ROTEL cd player and ive really been enjoying the experience. Still love vinyl but this has really helped scratch that itch. and now ive really become selective in what new records i buy

I love the sound of vinyl and I have all my albums from when I was a kid, and I'm 56. My first album was KISS Love Gun given to me by my cousin, and I still have that copy and it's all in great condition. The main draw of vinyl to me is the beautiful cover art.

Interesting thoughts and I have had most of them myself many times. I have another way to reduce the number of records I buy, which in my case was due to running out of space to store my records safely and tidily. My nerdy solution was as follows: Carry out a detailed inventory of your record collection asking yourself all these questions and more: How often do I listen to each particular album? How much do I really like this music? How good is the sound quality? How much pleasure do I get from listening to this album, compared to all the others in my collection? Do I keep this for purely sentimental reasons, or do I still like it? So I started a process which took over a year and helped get me through the various lockdowns and beyond, and is still informing my listening habits. Now every record in my relatively small collection of c. 700 albums is listed on my spreadsheet with 2 scores (musical quality and sound quality) and a date when I last listened to the album. So now I have a very clear idea of my favourite records and the ones I like much less and rarely listen to. Which means I can operate along the lines of "one in, one out" and every potential new purchase is looked at very critically: Will this really give me more pleasure than something I already own? Do I really need another album by X? Can I get rid of an album by an artist if I have a large number by him/her? Do i listen to this album often enough to justify a place in my music room? For most of us, our musical taste changes over the years although many favourites of course last a lifetime. In my case the "heavy" rock albums of my early twenties (I was 70 last year) are being replaced by 50's jazz albums. So out with Led Zeppelin, Groundhogs. etc and in with Art Pepper, Ben Webster and Serge Chaloff. Also this is a never ending process, and although my record collection remains around the 700 mark it is constantly changing and staying fresh and exciting to me. I look forward to every listening session with anticipation. Thanks for your videos they are always enjoyable and often thought provoking, and hopefully you find these remarks of interest. Those are useful questions to ask ourselves. My problem is that I have rarely gotten rid of a record that I didn't later regret having let go. Then I've spent more money on re-buying it! I may not listen to a particular record for even 10 or 20 years. But then it's there when I want it, and I sometimes fall in love all over again...

@@bacarandii Ay there's the rub... you can never be sure, and some records do go up and down in my estimation. But I can only remember regretting one disposal. Like everything musical, we're all different and that's how it should be.

Hi Keir! Thanks for the heads up on Cheshire Audio - just subscribed to it 😎 You won't believe this but I started a spreadsheet to that lists all of my albums and the last time I listened to it. Not so much to get rid of any (in my heart of heart I can't), but so I know what I'm going back to more than others. I have an overflow room and that's where the "less listened" albums go. It's always a journey and an always-changing one! Cheers!

Then I decided that if I was prepared to keep records in the loft I probably wouldn't listen to them again.... I have over 35,000 Lps. My buying habits have definitely changed in the past year. A few more high ticket items (filling in major artist holes or buying their new releases), fewer blind buys. For new record collectors - there should be a list of great albums that can be purchased for under five bucks. The first three Willie Nile albums, the first four Graham Parker albums. Joan Armatrading & Linda Ronstadt have albums that are amazing for almost nothing. Bruce Cockburn has some stunning albums for under five bucks. Major label classical music in mint condition for a buck. Bargains are out there.

When I was a teenager I used to have to sneak records I'd bought into my parents' house (I'd stash them under the front passenger seat of the car and then retrieve them when nobody was looking). I no longer have the need to do that (though I do still have anxiety dreams about it), but I've recently cut WAY down on my LP purchases because I realize that, using a vintage amp/receiver and a warm, punchy-sounding DAC (I like my 2010-vintage Cambridge Audio) I can get sound that's just as pleasing to me as the LPs in my collection -- without the fragility (so easy for dust or scuffs to damage them, even with careful handling) or the surface noise. I'll never get rid of my library of LPs, but I have CD/FLAC/ALAC digital backups of everything -- not just because it's more convenient but because in many cases they actually sound better to me -- even with a somewhat spendy turntable, cartridge, stylus and phono stage. I now have to seriously consider whether I want to spend money on a new SACD copy of an Acoustic Sounds remaster of a classic Blue Note (or Riverside or Impulse or Prestige or Verve...) title or get the more perishable vinyl version. But the vinyl still has the better artwork!

I had to hide my records in the bushes in front of our house. After my parents were asleep, I'd sneak outside and bring the records in. But that $3.82 I spent on Black Sabbath's Paranoid (new) was worth the hassle. I'm also picking up those Riverside and Blue Note remastered CDs. The sound is astonishingly good. The Bill Evans stuff is especially tasty. I just picked up a Japanese SHM CD of Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else which is terrific.

@@TheJoyofVinylRecords I have three "stacks" of amps in the living room, connected through the kinds of audio showroom comparison switches I remember from my adolescence. On the main console, I switch between McIntosh separates (C28 & MC2505), a Sansui AU-4900, a Marantz 2275, a 1965 The Fisher 500C tube receiver and a new-ish Jolida/Black Ice EL84 tube amp (FX10). The way I look at it, the equipment is the accompaniment to my records!

Vinyl music is one of the few "freedoms" we have left. There is a huge difference between the beautiful, natural sound of analog music versus the converted, computer regurgitated interpretation that is being not-so-subtly forced upon us. Vinyl music is the closest, next to audio tape, you can get to the actual performance of the artist. To the untrained ear, and those who've grown up in the digital realm, please understand that the nuances of analog music CANNOT be captured or replicated by a device that only operates with two-digits; it is mathematically IMPOSSIBLE. The illusion that digital music somehow offers superior sonic fidelity over analog music is just that, an illusion. Whenever you something gets converted, something is lost however, since the loss in music is seeming imperceptible to our ears, especially untrained ones, many are fooled by this illusion. Obviously, only those of a certain age group are the ones greatly affected by the adoption of digital music as "it". Vinyl music is not as cost effective to produce as digital, nor is it as portable however, in the end vinyl music because of it's sonic accuracy, will always outshine digital music, for me. I am a former club DJ from the 80s and I still own some 3000+ pieces of vinyl music along with my 30+ year old 1200mk2s. I also have the Technics DZ1200 connected to play CDs, and I can tell you first-hand that digital music it plays is as cold as the machines that produced it. We are no longer being moved by the rhythmic pulse of real people, now it's the clock pulse from a machine. Long live vinyl music!

I will agree that vinyl pressings are generally better than their CD or Streaming equivalents. But not for the reasons you state. Digital music is not a two state affair. It is based on a high speed ADC voltmeter (analog to digital converter) that takes samples of the signal voltage and produces corresponding 16, 24 or 32 bit binary values thousands of times a second. For example: a single 440hz note, middle A on the piano, using 14,400 16 bit (CD) sampling rates is sampled 32 times... each sample produces a 16 bit value. A 16 bit sample can hold 65535 individual values. With a line voltage of 2v, that amounts to a resolution of 7 microvolts per sample. This is, more accurate than multi-track tape, which commonly resolves to 10uv or higher, depending on the granularity of the tape oxides. Of course when you step that up to 192k samples per second at 24 bits more than 100 samples wold be taken with a resolution of just a couple of nanovolts. So digital sampling can, and does, very accurately depict the original analog waveforms. Where the real difference comes from is in the way digital files are mixed and mastered differently than analog tape. Unfortunately most digital files are mixed for loudness and they are heavily compressed and limited, where vinyl pressings would skip if they did that. I'm not saying that compression and limiting are a good thing... in fact, I think they're butchering good music. But it is what it is. I have about 4,000 songs transcoded, unaltered, from Vinyl to Digital files and when played side by side it is nearly impossible to tell them apart. When doing the transcoding I often found myself having to look to see which was playing. You are right ... but for the wrong reasons.

Keep in mind that a computer signal consists of zero and one or on and off. There is no getting around this fact. And those two values alone cannot provide the precision needed to replicate a sine wave accurately. Just because you do not hear a difference doesn’t mean the difference is not there. That difference is called total harmonic distortion, if I’m not mistaken.

I buy OG vinyl for certain bands from the 70s & 80s. Have entire Priest/Maiden/Scorpions 70s & 80s catalog on vinyl…. Ozzy I went all CD when Amazon had a sale on his entire catalog for $5 each 2 years ago I grew up with vinyl but CDs & cassettes were the thing in 1990 when I left home Cost of vinyl is insane to me these days especially when I can get the CD for less than half…. NOW if all new vinyl also came with a CD quality FLAC download…..

Up around 2022 there were awesome CD deals, like you said 5$ / new CD, quality stuff. And 2nd hand CD's were cheaper. Now the prices are on the rise for good stuff. Of course you can find 1$ pop albums on thrift stores. CD is now where vinyl was back in 2010-2015. The "90's and early 2000's" cheap vinyl years already gone on CD too. Still healthy market.

I'm trying to slow down myself. I'm sitting here waiting on my second delivery from Japan this week with three more on the way from the UK. I stopped listening to vinyl 45 years ago but thankfully and put my albums in storage and got them out last year all in pristine condition and then the bug bit again and I relapsed lol. I like to search for the Japanese pressings and I just got a 50-year-old copy of 4 Way Street that I cannot tell from brand new! Better vinyl, better quality control, and better care by the user. What fun!

My buying has calmed down a lot, gone are the days of going into a shop and leaving with eight albums. I started buying vinyl again three years ago and that was right from scratch as I had none of the vinyl that I originally had in the 1970s and 80s. So I bought a lot at first just to build up a sizeable collection again, but now I have a pretty decent collection of a few hundred albums and plenty to choose from without getting bored of what I’ve got. If I never bought another album I’d be satisfied enough with what I’ve got already, but of course I can’t resist adding more when I see something I really want. I will continue to add stuff but it’s at a much slower rate now, and I’m stronger willed now to put a record down in a store and say “no, I don’t need this” and walk away.

Rick, I was so into the Doors during high school in the 80’s. In fact, John Densmore had gone to my HS. Anyway, I became so sick of them at a certain point that I ended up selling the entire collection to a record store😢 in terms of collectibility, yes I do regret it but I still am burnt out on listening to them other than one song “Not to Touch the Earth.” you know how music can take you back to a certain time in your life, and hearing them reminds me of all the adolescent BS at that time. Fortunately, I didn’t do that with too many other artists. Now in terms of my current purchases and budgeting, I’m extremely frugal, especially since I’m not working. For the most part, I buy nothing more than $1 occasionally 2. A local shop near me has bi yearly sales where the dollar bin vinyl is only $.25. I found some cool things like “the good bad and the ugly soundtrack” yes I’m very lucky to have kept my Beatles,Zeppelin, Stones, Van Halen, etc. from back in the day so I’m set

My first Judas Priest was Sin After Sin. Quickly followed by going backwards and finding Sad Wings of Destiny. I was hooked. I played in a band that did a lot of JP songs (Victim of Changes, Beyond the Realms of Death) that I had to sing. Also a BOC fan. from way back, first heard On Your Feet or On Your Knees. I have the addiction again. Been rebuilding my collection of many albums that were sold in garage sales. but also buying new stuff.

Hi Rick, great Video! I only buy selected releases that I really like and albums of my favorite artists on vinyl. Otherwise, I still get copies on CD, especially used CDs from the 80s and 90s (for 1 or 2€!!) which are often have a great sound. But vinyl will always be my No. 1 🙂

Think it's great getting to one of local stores Record Archive. Was there last week and purchase several used records along with a couple new. Same with C Ds new and used. Found a couple surprises including a Europe version of Deep Purple with photos and news paper clippings in Dutch. Always fun finding these special items. Buying on-line and delivered to your home is ok but building relationships at the local retailers isore fun.

I think the major issue is the cost of new vinyl for most of us. I have cut back drastically on new vinyl and have even skipped the last several RSD days. The fun for me is crate digging the used sections now which can be rewarding and financially feasible. We all know there is plenty to revisit in our own collections to keep us busy and I bet I'm not alone with the still sealed waiting to be played pile too. Even if one were to stop buying records there will always be that previously amassed collection to fall back on with plenty of items to revisit. If we can find the time to shop for more whats stopping us from listening to what's already there? Great points and another fine video.

I should have mentioned crate digging more. It's a wonderful way to find records for a good price that can be instantly upgraded by cleaning them. Often times you may find something for an incredibly reasonable price too.

I have about 3,500 records and rarely buy anything new, though I did pick up Taylor swift's Red, her version. But I like to visit record stores whenever on road trips. And I found out something interesting this last trip: I bought a bunch of one dollar records from Windy City records in the Chicago area, and then when I got back into Kentucky, I picked up a couple of records at Guest room records in Louisville, also for a buck each. They are fairly obscure titles and I felt I could probably get joy out of a listening or two for a buck. And I was more than right. And the fun part was that the Spiro Gyra one was so cheap because the jacket was unglued. It's glued now, and the record is dead quiet, i.e. sounds brand new. So dos the art Garfunkel one... I've not listened to the Foghat Live one yet.

Great video, Rick! 👍. New sub here. I have slowed my roll on vinyl buying. I want a killer mountain bike. Buying bargain CDs has effectively quelled my vinyl bug. I have always had more CDs than vinyl though. They both have a proper place in my life. Both sound fabulous on my system. The sad abandoned CDs glow with love when I disinfect, clean, crank, and then add them to my collection with my spreadsheet and Discogs. By contrast, vinyl owns me by the necessary care, safe storage and the high unit cost. But I am definitely going to spend some dough on RSD. 😃☀🌴🌊. Rock Always! - Heather

I agree with your #2 of 5 ways - to at least slow down. And BTW I saw Judas Priest in 1976 on the Sad Wings of Destiny tour. Had front row center at the Santa Monica Civic. BOC and Nazareth were also on the bill. I still have the original first 2 albums by them along the all the others. I started being very selective years ago when I thought I needed all the new albums by my favorite bands. As it turns out many of those LPs just got slipped into the collection not to be seen again for years and years. My collection is quite large and recently instead of buying new LPs I just started listening to the albums I never listened too in the first place. Let me say I've found about 300 or so albums I've never listened to. Now I'm satisfied. But I do buy one band's every album and that's King Buffalo. If you like psych/stoner check this band out. Really enjoyed your video as I do with them all.

Hi Rick, I personally am trying to slow it down. I have been doing to much impulse buying. As far as the budget goes, I have a separate account for record buying. I like to do garage and estate sales and do a fair bit of reselling. Records and audio gear mostly. Proceeds from those sales go into the record account. Thanks for the vid!

I thought you were going to talk about analog versus digital and new records being cut from digital masters! I was surprised it was about saving money - which is always a good thing. Great video as always. I can imagine finding that ZZ Top record warped hurt your soul a little!

I will never stop buying, but I do need to pause just due to being in between jobs. I would only make exceptions for "one-in-lifetime" opportunities (and I don't mean the Remain In Light album). Funny, the idea of never feeling the collection is complete is a positive thing for me. Knowing there are like hundreds of records I still get to track down and experience for the first time is exciting. Since I got back into vinyl I've heard about new releases and I briefly sample them on Apple Music and then order them, only to find out that once I listen to the whole album it's not what I expected and probably won't listen to it again. A lot of these are old jazz or old rock groups that are still putting out new stuff, and these albums are not cheap. I think what I need to do is to stream and listen to the whole album just as I would the record. That should keep me from making these mistakes.

I'm doing options 2 and 5, selective and budget. Just acquired an old Technics quartz drive TT with a good cartridge thinking I would "get back into vinyl". Only a few old LPs still on hand. Paired with my restored Scott 299A tube amp and Klipsch Forte IIs I was expecting heaven.. As it turns out it was fun...but really didn't sound all that great despite being a way better system than what I had in the 1980s. I think I was enamored with the nostalgia of going back in time more than the sound. At $25 a pop for an LP it's probably going to be a slow process. Hundreds of CDs though and a new DAC which made way more difference than I thought so tough call. Time will tell.

You mentioned the Record Pi, best investment I have made when it comes to dealing with warps. I mainly buy new vinyl, and as most know it’s a crapshoot as to whether or not the vinyl is going to have some type of warp. Seems to be about 50/50 anymore, and the instances are as prevalent now as ever due to the demand and need to get these pressings done asap and out the door.

Agree. Record Pi is an effective way too fix warped records. I find that I have to play with the time and temperature for some particularly challenging warps. I'd be interested in any tips or tricks because I find myself using it a few times a month...

I'm old so I come from the vinyl days of yesteryear. I still buy vinyl but I have one rule I stick to 90%. If it didn't come out originally on vinyl, I'll get the CD because it's from the CD era. Buying vinyl from the old days has nostalgia built into it so I enjoy the albums from a "Comfort Zone" kind of place. My memories of CD buying are recent & I take care of my CD's so I pretty much have what I like. With all this said, there are exceptions but they're far & few between. One type of exception is box sets like the Beatles sets. I buy the CD sets (with the bonus content) & separately I will buy the standard vinyl reissue. This way I get the vinyl LP in it's original form & the new bonus content in the most recent format (CD) along with the CD version of the album. --- Bill Bonus Trivia To Share: From the time Michael Jackson was with the Jackson 5 & into his early solo music, into The Jacksons music & finally into his adult solo material. I have lots of vinyl. I'm not a collector per se. These days I only buy a record if I intend to listen to it. I've also recently discovered how to extract the DSD layer directly from SACDs. My SACDs sound amazing. Better than vinyl in some regards. In fact, they're so close on my system that I have trouble hearing the difference. So I still buy vinyl but if I can get it much cheaper on SACD I'm buying it that way. I'm interested in music and listening to what I buy.

Yes, it can take over but after more than 50 years of buying vinyl I've slowed up. Curiously my most recent purchase is a reissue of one of the first long players I bought - the Atlantic 75 Series 45rpm cut of Selling England by the Pound. An enhanced sonic experience compared with the 1973 original so maybe my approach is now more one of quality over quantity. By this time next week I should also have a copy of Aja UHQR to enjoy!

Back about October I got really frustrated with some albums that I got on Discogs that were not up to the quality as described. I got mad about it, and usually that’s not a good thing for me, and I started buying records from analog productions. One thing about it, Chad has gotten an amazing selection and out of this world quality control going on. From November until right now, I have spent almost $3000 in albums. Yes, I have the cringe factor when the wife beats me to the porch. To top all this off, in November, I bought a Mofi UltraDeck For nearly $3000. I had it for 92 days, until just a couple days ago and it was riddled with problems and I shipped it back to them. Now, today, the wife and I are driving to Raleigh to Audio Advice and we are buying a Rega Planar 6 and a Hana HL cartridge. Yeah, with tax $3200. So, with all that to be said, yeah, I need to slow my roll. I will absolutely give my wife some credit, she has never complained about anything.

My phono preamp (Tavish Vintage) has made my old records come to life more than any upgrade I made. Sooooo, I am less tempted to plunk down $60 to $150 for an audiophile version of a record that I already have. I guess everyone has to find their own personal sweet spot between upgraded gear and upgraded vinyl. Joe

​@@pnichols6500 which Rega did you own? I want to be clear, I wanted that UD to be my end game. I wanted that thing to work. I think ergonomically, it beats the P6 and I spent three hours with the P6 last night. It's amazing, it just works, it's a dead silent operator, but the que lever should be longer and even though I adore the external PSU, I wish the P6 had a power button on the lower right just like the UD. At the end of the day, the UD has build quality and quality assurance issues and they're repeatable. I didn't have one problem, I had a half-dozen issues that were manufacturing defects and according to MoFi (and KZbin) I was absolutely not the only guy having these issues.

I get most of my records from a friendly used record dealer. I get great condition LPs so cheap I can really just pick up anything I fancy. The only trouble is, I usually have a backlog of 40 or 50 LPs waiting to be cleaned and played (while I'm buying more) 😀

Although ye doest jest, this can be a serious problem that can quickly get out of control and have an impact on a family’s financial and emotional stability. Just like overspending on clothes, jewelry, gambling or sports cards, if you spend more than you can afford, you will feel the impact. It’s so easy to overspend, especially with UHQR, Analogue Productions, box sets and RSD releases costing what they do. This is why #5 should be #1 imo, everything in moderation and stay within your means and monitor your spending against your real vinyl budget. Good video.

Hey Rick, what’s all this heresy about buying less vinyl. I had to turn off the volume in case my wife agreed with any/all of your recommendations. ‘It was a close run thing” I happened to have had a really good vinyl week. A trip to Devon, UK included stopping at Richmix Vinyl in Brixham, a store built in the walkway between two shops. A great selection and super condition. I reluctantly departed with a dozen albums including an early Blonde on Blonde for £25. On Saturday I paid my local store a visit, Record Box, Andover UK. A one car garage converted into a store. He had recently taken in a Beach Boys collection which I needed a few of to fill some gaps in my collection plus a NM 1st pressing of Eric Clapton’s self named first album and a similar condition copy of ELO’s Discovery with the poster and an usual sticker advertising the poster. I collect Jennifer Warnes, her release of The Hunter, is really expensive in the UK. Original copies are over £100 and the cheapest new release on Impex, the audiophile label is £60. After your chat on expensive audiophile releases I found a UK outlet, I am on their email list and they had The Hunter on sale at £35. So that was another acquisition this week. All in all a splendid week for my record collection. Now no more talk of purchase restraint - your country’s economy needs you😂😂😂😂

Yeah man, I gave away 500 records I'd collected as a kid back in the 90s in favor of CD's and I now stream hires with a good dac so I'm very selective in curating a few old favorites. So stressful ordering expensive UK originals from the UK only to realize it's time to bribe my mailman again to actually deliver them so they don't get sent back. Frigging Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffitti both this time...ugh! Why couldn't decided not to deliver the recent Alan Parsons or Doobie Bro's instead of my UK Zep! So I am 52 years old & I’ve been a hardcore collector ( meaning sleeving & cleaning & really taking care of my albums ) since I was 11, I had over 10,000 records and I would always just want more. The market for selling right now is right , prices are way up there! So I did good , but let me tell you it was one of the best thing I’ve ever done, at first I missed going into my record room and seeing the bare shelves ( mind you I pulled about 150 that I feel were important to me ) so I have those, but no more anxiety about a fire or who’s gonna take these when I die etc. I remodeled my kitchen, put a new roof on my home & put in a beautiful swimming pool & still have a nice kitty to pull from , I was finding myself going down to my record room, less and less, especially during the summer months- couldn’t be happier-collecting is totally an addiction

@@vinylrules4838 so when I mentally decided I was ready to part with my collection, I started on eBay with what I thought were $25 records, but ended up selling for much more ,than I realized the market was changing ,so I started with small records on eBay just to establish good feedback ,then I went with the heavy hitter records the ones that went for in the hundreds ,but sometime during the process I think it was when I hit the $3000 mark eBay wanted a tax identification # or my Social Security number and also their cut went up and they started charging more for sale so I stopped with eBay and sold a few locally through Facebook marketplace. I’m in Ct. but I had people from Mass. , New York, & Rhode Island come and buy some stuff, I specifically put in my ad that the records were for hardcore collectors and that I was very aware of what I had ,so ended up selling a lot of them that way which was much easier than packing the records and then worrying about if someone was going to send them back or if they were going to get lost in the mail it was nice to have people come and see my music room too. I’d like to show it off lol, and then whatever I had left I had sold to a local store that’s been around here for years that I’ve always dealt with, and they were happy to have my collection so I may have taken a little beaten with the last part of my collection, but I didn’t seem to mind because they offered me way more than I even expected to get with what was left It was a lot of work, but it was fun and mentally I think I did the right thing ,I have other priorities I have kids a wife and now clarity cause I’m not constantly thinking about buying records and I’m fine with the records that I kept .

So I started selling the what I thought was $25 stuff on eBay just to establish good feedback, actually ended up getting between $30-55 for that stuff , that’s when I realized the market for records has changed big time. I listed 10 records a week ( it was a lot of work ) until I reached I think it was $3000 then eBay wanted a tax ID # or social security # and at the same time their listing fees & their cut of the sale went up , so I started posting on Facebook marketplace and put in my listing for collectors only I’m in Ct and I had people that came from all over the tri state area to buy ,it was insane the calls I was getting, but I was much easier than listing packing & mailing out the stuff. I met a lot of wonderful people & in the process got a chance to show off my music room. The remaining albums in the collection at that point were around 2000 and a local record store who i dealt with for years gave me a price I couldn’t refuse, there were still a lot of heavy hitter records left in there at that point, so I did well & I couldn’t be happier, I’m no longer finding myself thinking about buying records like I was wasting so much time doing, as much as I enjoyed going to record stores & admiring my collection I found myself doing it Les and less especially during the summer months, now I’m spending more time with my wife , my kids & friends and have become more social, I don’t know it just feels right. So I’m very content with the records I’ve kept & I’m thankful I didn’t sell my system b/c every once in a while I do like to go down to my music room and listen- I was totally addicted to buying records & now I’m free of it & realize I totally did not need all those records- The room did look awesome with all those records though 😉

A friend of mine has arranged for a sympathetic neighbour to receive his vinyl album orders and collects when his dear wife is not around. Of course trying to outwit a lady is near impossible for us blokes and i haven't the heart to tell him that his wife is fully cognoscente of this arrangement. Fortunately my wife just rolls her eyes when a parcel is delivered and seeks revenge by deploying a list of household chores for me to do. I watch channels wherein the host reviews numerous releases for example the Sea Of Tranquillity channel. I've always wondered how they get the time to really get to know an album when so much is flying into their homes. In 2023 i was surprised and thrilled with the new releases by Hawkwind, Ozric Tentacles and Stray and spent time to get familiar with the music before seeking out more albums. As such i guess i have, by default, controlled my purchases.

Another thoughtful and interesting video. However, I think I will go ahead and make my recommendation of the sixth thing to do: Expand your musical tastes. We all have emotional attachments to music we listened to in our youth including our teens. But do we really need another copy of an Ozzie Osbourne record? There are thousands of excellent to pristine condition classical and jazz albums just waiting to be found at estate sales and flea markets. Yes, it takes time, but when you hit it big it's more than worth it. I have come to be nearly obsessed with Baroque and Early Classical music from Mozart, Bach, Haydn, Vivaldi, Purcell, Telemann, etc. I thought my best deal ever would be the 10 pristine classical albums I found for $9.00 a few months ago. Then, a week ago, at an estate sale I found 185 classical and 50s and 60s popular music albums that were in very good to pristine condition. (Maybe 80% are pristine.) Seems many of them were never played. All were stored in the original inner sleeves that were placed sideways in the covers. I was able to make the deal of the century and got all 185 of them for a lump sum of $30.00. That's 16 cents a piece.

@@the80slivehere I've remembered something from my childhood many (many) years ago. In the 50s, 60s, and 70s people would buy a new or their first hi-fi/stereo system. And they'd buy a few classical LPs to lay around so it looked like they had good taste. All of those albums were played only once or not at all. I bet 98% of the side 2s were NEVER played. I've been finding those at estate sales for 1 or 2 dollars.

I'm considered a newbie when it comes to collecting records (it's just been 9 years for me haha). But I've been considering to stop buying. Some of the issues for me are: time, price and space. I've been getting busy these days that I only listen to records on the weekends, sometimes I don't even do it. Price is getting ridiculous as well (especially here, in Indonesia where the exchange rate is urghh). And... I'm running out of space to store my records. Just this year alone I've only bought 4 records. I used to buy at least 1-5 records a month back then haha. The thought of stopping buying vinyl has been on my mind since last year. I get it - it's not the cheapest of hobbies and it's not plug-n-play. I admit to getting frustrated myself when I fall into a rabbit hole of over-analyzing and tweaking. But in the end, nothing beats going through the ritual of placing a record on the platter, sitting back with a drink, and getting lost in the music for a little while. It's my favorite part of the day and nothing has ever compared to vinyl. If you do opt to step back for a bit and move to streaming or CDs, there's nothing wrong with that at all! My only piece of advice is to hang onto your records and turntable. A few years from now things may change and you'll have more room and may rediscover your joy of vinyl. I went through that and I am so glad I had my records to go back to. I know quite alot of folks who sold their collections when CDs came out and regret it today.

I bought a bootleg a Beatles album (savage young Beatles) from Hastings for $19.99 and sold it on EBay for $700, I looked recently and one sold for $10.000 in bad shape. You gotta remember the X factor. I bought that BOC. I found sealed Keith Whitley George Strait, Vince Gill and Allan Jackson records at the flea market for $5 each. A lot of people who have been hoarding records are going to pass away it’s inevitable we can’t live forever and there records including my records when I die will flood the market. There are a lot of records waiting to flood the market.Remember that. Stay vigilant never give up the hunt if you’re young and strong! I got my pre amp this year, and it was $900 bucks. I used my saved money to buy it. What you do is get a PayPal account, and just buy what you want PayPal credit. They give you 6 months, no interest, and your wife will not know what happened. You will not get a bill in the mail, as you use the app to pay for your purchase. I work for UPS, and intercept all of my purchases, so they never make it to the front door. 😃😃😃

Being a very picky vinyl nerd , I don’t need to have a complete collection of all my favorite bands/artists. Let me give a couple of examples of favourite , well known bands were I DON’T have/want all releases : Beatles , David Bowie , Pink Floyd , The Rolling Stones , Black Sabbath , Queen , Deep purple , Kiss and Iron Maiden. Another way I save money and space is Greatest hits albums. I have almost a hundred artists on that shelf , but I can hear any of their hits Whenever I want.

I only adopt #2: being more selective. There are some bands that I loved in my youth, but now not so much anymore. If I see an obscure title of them, I find myself picking it up with excitement. Then I think "Will I listen to it? Will I enjoy it?" Just last week found a Flux of Pink Indians record (bought a couple back then), only to put it back in the bin. Not my cup o'tea anymore. Or I found a Sister of Mercy EP from the 80s, but recently bought the box set. No, I don't need the OG EP. Fortunately, my budget is bigger than my ability to find titles I am interested in, so that is never an issue. -- I have a local record store (right on the way to the yoga studio), but the vast majority of my obscurities is (pre-)ordered on Bandcamp, and some on discogs.

Last year I started keeping a list of what music I buy. I use the notes app on my phone and I kept track of how many CDs and LPs I bought. I felt this way I could see at a glance what my buying habits have been and it wouldn’t take long to roughly add up how much I’d spent. It’s not a detailed list it’s just simply CD = X and Vinyl = X. I’m doing the same thing this year. So far my 2024 list is CD = 4 and. Vinyl = 5. It’s only just turned March so I’m averaging a Vinyl purchase of one every two weeks. In 2023 my list ended with CD = 44 and Vinyl = 22. So that’s 22 vinyl records last year which if I take that at an average price of £30 per LP (some were more some were less, but it’s a pretty decent average price). That’s £660 on vinyl in 2023. For twice as many CD purchases it will total about £400. The only real thing that makes me question buying vinyl is the high price difference compared to other ways of consuming music, along with the questionable quality control, but currently I can comfortably afford what I buy so I’m not too concerned. My purchases are always considered before pulling the trigger.

collecting Vinyl is not really a bad habbit.I would say Life is to short to do stupid things. But you're right it needs discipline in buying behaviour. The prices went up due to many people doing that as an investment.They're really not listening to that recordings even don't having a turntable.I still love my collection of first press records, i wouldn't buy new vinyl because 99% of the masters are digital....So i also love my CD's and with the right equipment you'll having a lot of fun with this digital source. Vinyl sounds a bit different, but not better in any case.I'm using a Behringer 1951 tube composer to listen to my CD's. With this unit you're able to add some harmonic distortion with built in tubes and it's surprisingly almost the vinyl sound,,,But without cracks and dust on it....

the only NEW records i am buying is new music, new artists, new bands---and NEW releases in general. I am NOT buying any more reissues. I've never been happy with reissues and it just isn't worth my expenditure. I will buy reissues for things that were never released on vinyl OR live shows etc------but no generic reissues for releases that are available used on OG form. For older independent and underground music (which is what i'm into), i will only buy original pressings and those are often $$ so i can't buy that many at the same time.

I completely get that. I was averse to reissues for quite some time after getting burned by a few (and one company in particular who just spits them out as a cash grab without caring about quality). That being said, I have come around somewhat and will occasionally (stress on 'occasionally') purchase a reissue.

You get to the nub of collecting anything, especially things that are affordable for most people. I mean, unlike multi-millionaires like Jay Leno or Jerry Seinfeld, most of us can't afford to fall into a manic collection of cars. But records? It can be done and I sometimes find myself on the edge of falling into that addiction. No CD or vinyl album of mine gets bought that I'm not going to listen. to. As you know, some collect just to collect. They get sucked into this vortex they can no longer control, from which they see no escape.

When a song sticks in my head, I go look at the local store. If they do not have it, then I ask them to order, if not then I go to discogs. Ultrasonic cleaning baby. Even if the record looks clean, clean it with ultrasonic and wipe dry with micro fiber. Wow. Crappy dirt records can sound a lot better. I only have about 50 records. I got into recently as CDs were the thing when I was young…and our old crappy, uncleaned records did the records no favor.

Buying records is an addiction. Without having bought so many records people would have countless more thousands of dollars, which would probably make their life significantly happier. Does having thousands of records instead of having a few hundred records make your life significantly happier? I guess who would be the experts on that, are people who have lost their music collection due to flood, fire, or some other circumstance. It's not like losing a loved one or a pet. Those are one of a kind. Records are not one of a kind. There are plenty of identical copies out there. Remember when you were a kid? Most of our collections amounted to around 5 or 6 albums and maybe 9 or ten 45s. Did we dread having to play the same ones over and over again? I don't think so. Even with that few, I think we felt a sense of variety. Records you have come to love are like people or pets you've come to love; you don't get tired of them. They still stimulate you Even if played on something primitive for equipment, which subtracts and adds some ugliness to the sound. Is feeling the need to have so many records, like slapping in the face the records we do have? You don't satisfy me; I must get more. Music is like water; it's everywhere. There are much bigger problems in life, than the feat of running out of music that stimulates you. Some people rationalize buying physical media over streaming, by saying "What if they take certain things off their playlist.?" If you have the physical media, you don't have to worry about that. Should that really be a worry? Would it be a disaster not to hear certain music anymore. You might miss it a bit; but not anywhere near like you'd miss a loved one. Couldn't you go on to something else? It is fun to look for records or cds, or anything. The thrill of not knowing what might pop up. Thrift stores are particularly exciting. If something really rare pops up in a record store, chances are good you'll really have to pay for it. In a thrift store, a copy of The Velvet underground with the peel off banana is likely going to be the same price as a Alfred Apaka or Bert Kampefert album. Of course in reality, the peel off banana won't be there, and neither will the record. But I have found thousand dollar records in thrift stores a few times. The Charles Rodrigues cartoons from Stereo Review magazine were compiled into a book called Total Harmonic Distortion; a collectors item to the extent of about $100

But the truth of the matter the records I own and listen to are a part of who I am. As I write this my wife is painting the casings I made for the windows in the vinyl room. We are completing redoing it. This was her idea and her vision is to create a classy jazz styled room (although we are more a classic rock family - I’m the one dipping into jazz now and then). I guess the point is it’s in our DNA to enjoy records at the end of the day. She looks forward to it just as much as I do but for different reasons.

Before streaming, the one reason to buy & go through a lot of lps was to hopefully find some records that you love. I'd trade ten records that I like for one that I love. Now you don't have to BUY all those records in the hopes that you will absolutely love one or two out of a whole big bunch. You can stream a lot of albums for free to find those very special records. Another thing is that whenever you hear a piece of music for the first time, it won't ever happen again. It's a different experience. The notes that are coming next, the direction the music is going to take, those are all things unknown to you, since it's a first listen to the music. Every listen afterward is very different, those things are not unknown and mysterious anymore. You might notice things within the music that you hadn't noticed before though. Someone who sets their lp collection limit at 400 lps or 500 lps; that seems reasonable. Above that, lps and the space they take up, can start taking over rooms. With big collections, you probably spend less time listening to your favorites, and your favorites are your favorites because they bring you more joy listening to them, than listening to the others. If your listening preferences are like mine, I'm pretty sure a few hundred rock recordings, 150 Jazz recordings, 100 classical lps, and 50 Christmas recordings will enrich your life about as much as a whole warehouse full of lps. There will be a lot of good music you don't own. But the music that you did end up owning, consider it the music of your life. For those who believe in fate; maybe the music you own is your fate. You can always try some more things in time, but don't go overboard. You don't have to OWN every good album. You won't eat in every good restaurant or get to visit every good tourist resort. Why should not having all the good records bother you as much as that. On ones deathbed, I doubt if anyone says "Dang I wish I would have gotten to enjoy some Mott The Hoople and T Rex records, and now it's too late". Enjoy the ones you have.

Since this is my second go round of buying vinyl I have decided to be selective with what I buy. My intention is not to build a huge collection but to develop a variety of music that I will enjoy spending time going through the process of placing on the turntable and enjoying the difference in listening to the format. Since I stream and have cd player with a fairly large cd collection, I don't feel the need to buy everything on that I like. I recently bought 2 Fleetwood Mac albums and an America album. Before that it had been several months since I bought an album. I would guess I spend around $200 a year on vinyl and about $240 a year on streaming. That fits easily within my budget. I always ask for vinyl as birthday and Christmas gifts, so that way I can let others buy me something I'll enjoy. Figure out how to stay within your budget and all will be fine.

Yeah Rick I'm fortunate too that my wife likes all my music; makes listening at home or in the car especially on long trips that much more enjoyable for both of us....But as I commented on one of your past videos....I got so much music both new and used that I haven't even listened to yet...so that's the priority now...make time to listen!! But I hear you loud and clear on the new JP and other faves of yours...it'll be hard to cut back for sure but maybe if you make a promise to yourself to limit new purchases to maybe one or two at the most a month, and stick to it, you might find that you feel better with yourself and maybe even enjoy your music that much more...good luck!!
