That's a really good point about the pruning. It kind of goes against what one might normally think. "Larger is better". Keeping them shorter and trimmed produces better fruit. Let's hear it for short and sweet!!😆👍 (self deprecating short joke)

ThU for the quick and thorough reply. Mine is not growing that tall, but the new growth IS taller than the productive part of the plant. Since I don't have a green thumb at all, I appreciate the guidance to caring for what I can think of caring for around here. I started clearing brush and did find a blackberry bush It's a small one, but it has some green berries on it. I even drove a thorn into my hand as a constant reminder of it. :)

Yes, we are neighbors in Missouri. I'm in Louisiana, MO right now. Our family is looking to relocate after the recent flooding which drowned almost all of our gardens. We lost honey berry plants but the elderberry and blackberry survived. Everything else beside the asparagus, a few beet plants and one lone strawberry died. **sigh** Seeing as this house floods every year, we are more than ready to go. Just have to find a place that we can call our own away from any major river! LOL! Right now we're two blocks from the Mississippi and that's obviously way too close. We're waling on buckled floors and aren't even gong in the basement....black mold and floating insulation. Anyway, glad to hear we are neighbors!

Hear of you from the Hollar Homestead. I have blackberry and raspberry plants all over but not really where I want to have them. They don't seem to be producing anything, I think I got like... 5 berries... So I'm kind of trying to get rid of them but haven't had much time and they come back with a vengeance! Maybe next year we'll actually get berries and I won't be so eager to annihilate them from our garden space and yard.

Hi there I just found you Via the Hallard Homestead. Question that you have probably gotten repeatedly. I live in town with a small yard. I had raspberries but they kept spreading so I eventually chopped them down and spent the next few years beating down the runners. Is there a way to keep them contained? I was thinking of cutting the bottom off a bucket or barrel even and burying it into the ground. But how deep do I have to go to keep the root system from invading surrounding areas? Or will that even work at all? Any info would be appreciated. Take care.

That is a strange situation. Perhaps try amending your soil with straw or other organic matter to make sure the plants are getting good nutrients.

Just found your channel - thank you. We just bought large property with tons of wild blackberry brambles on them. I'm finishing up picking what I can get to this year (now that I know what we have and where we have it). I'd like to tame them. I've noticed that when the berries are done, the vines pretty much die. Can I just go ahead and go in and cut out the dead vines (there are SOOOO many!). And then can I prune and dig up some of this year's new growth (some are 6-8ft long already) and transplant those to nice rows with trellises? If I do, will a transplanted vine still produce next year?

After fruiting the canes will die back, which is good for the main crown. Those can and should be cut out to keep airflow, access and manageable "rows" "Patches"
@FarmAlarm

That is correct Brandy. I would add, If you are going to compost down the Old plants, do not do that too close to your BlackBerry patch. They can attract cane borer beetles.
