I am under the care of both a psychiatrist and clinical psychologist. And, yes, I am very thankful for both of them and the care they have provided over the last 4+ years.

Is being a psychiatrist unethical? No. Do most psychiatrists regularily participate in unethical behaviour? Yes. This includes involuntary hospitalizations and medications, which are in breach of the UN convention of the rights of persons with disabilities, overprescribing harmful substances, and overdiagnosing labels, which stigmatize patients and lead to worse outcomes.

I say this as a psychiatry residency applicant this year, I have heard people call psych docs drug dealers. So, even the doctors get stigmatized and accused of being unethical. If not for mental health workers, who would care for the patients? It's a strange world we live in.

Did you miss the whole thing where tons of doctors were caught taking bribes from pharmaceutical industries and pushing people into addictive drugs for no reason? Have you ever heard of the opioid crisis or where you born only a couple years ago or something? RIP Rebecca Riley.

it’s complex because as a patient it causes me quite significant financial harm to NEED a psychiatrist in the US, so even as someone whose life has been sustained by psychiatry, has had suicide attempts, hospitalizations, ect, the system in the US along with the power dynamic and sometimes a feeling of poor care when you’re desperate can all trend toward, frankly, resentment. it also feels like this often richer person benefiting from your suffering-that is the model, since I don’t want help as a service I must buy to survive but because someone thinks i’m worthy of care. i think that there are probably ways to portray yourself and types of transparency that minimize these problems that you may learn. as a nurse, i have faced the nurse ratchet stereotype, etc. it all falls out of the patient not sharing out context of what is going on systemically or for them particularly. I also recommend visiting BAD psych hospitals. I was once admitted to Smokey Point Behavioral Hospital on Marysville WA. I didn’t see a provider for days, didn’t know if I was voluntary or involuntary, didn’t know when I’d leave, had no med changes, was given meals I was allergic to, was cut off from ketamine therapy, could see family only twice a week for 30 minutes a time, never saw a therapist. Some psych hospitals I think are scams to bill medicaid when the ED MUST commit someone. I was essentially imprisoned and helpless and it was intensely frightening while I was at my most vulnerable. If that’s a patient’s context…

The whole controversy with "DONE" distribution of ADHD medication in unethical and inappropriate ways was very upsetting to me. I want mental health care to be accessible and affordable and there are plenty of cases where tele-health is appropriate. It is disturbing to know there are enterprises who exploit the work of psychiatrists and psych np's (and the patient!) to make millions. This added to the public view of psychiatrists and psych np's as "drug dealers" and unscrupulous who will just give pills and don't care what happens to the patient. The whole thing also undermines the diagnosis of ADHD as serious psychiatric condition. This is my opinion of course.

Hmm.. Psychiatry ruined my life.. Psychiatry saved my life.. I guess I have no answer that I can summarise here.. Maybe it depends on suitability to the role to large degree.. It carries enormous responsibility and self awareness is crucial.. I enjoy your videos and find you far less threatening than some psychiatrists I have encountered.. You seem thoughtful/empathetic.. I imagine drinking tea with you rather than legging it.. I doubt this helps much.. Best wishes 🙂

No. It is not inherently unethical to be a psychiatrist. But some of the things that your brethren do are unethical. If you take a person who suffers from anxiety, prescribe him a low dose antidepressant, he goes home and feels better, that's something good that you have done. If you take a child from an abusive family, label him with a mood disorder or a personality disorder and that family uses those terms to gaslight him and subjugate him and it causes him social and economic losses in life, you are not only unethical, but you deserve every negative consequence that comes your way. "I was simply following orders and guidelines" does not cut it. There are different kinds of problems you are faced with and people may take your help in unfortunate situations, either voluntarily or involuntarily, but sometimes your brethren have the habit of covering up mistakes (even if inadvertent) by gaslighting those people or trying to "put them in their place" with authoritative demeanours rather than face the brunt of it. On the article "Why I resigned from Mental Health America", the author Jill Edwards writes: "Speaking your truth to your doctors may be healing, liberating. But, be aware they have a career & an industry to protect. They will never admit guilt & will use any means necessary to protect their interests, including belittling & pathologizing you, making threats, and might even resort to involuntary commitment to silence or punish you for calling them out (I know of many such cases). " She is correct about several of you people. Keep psychiatry aside, but one thing I will give you credit for personally as a human being is that you are at least able to reflect on these issues to some degree and the fact that you're asking about it on KZbin shows you have a certain awareness of what people may think of your profession.
@cupofcoffee5700Ай бұрын
Sometimes, it's not even that you people are intentionally unethical, you simply lack the awareness (like a congenitally blind man lacks the capacity to comprehend colour) that what you're doing might be wrong in a particular situation.

@@mystriddlery unfortunately, psychiatry is very much a real science. We can use fMRI & electroencephalographs to map out areas of the brain related to psychopathology. For example, certain areas can become overactive with anxiety, and underactive with depression. I’m not going to get into specifics but you can look it up yourself
@mystriddlery4 ай бұрын
@@reddbendd Ive read things about that and it seems like an excuse to diagnose people with something and sell them pills their whole lives. @@reddbendd No, we can't do that. While there are some group differences, they are way too small to go the other way and assign individuals to groups.
