If you're interested in this game these videos are very informative. I have seen some of these booster packs at gas stations and until now I never realized they were double the price of other stores. If you have the money to spend on a game would you rather have the best value for your buck or are you just going to randomly purchase any product that is presented? Yeah you can be critical of how he breaks down the numbers but at the end of the day it's simply a hobby if you don't like the game then you don't have to play it. Magic has been around forever and I don't see it going anywhere in the near future and judging by the other knock off games like hearthstone many games are still trying to imitate number one.
@Volkbrecht
@Volkbrecht 3 жыл бұрын
This is what pisses me off so badly. Just switching the packs to set boosters while keeping the numbers the same would have cost WotC literally nothing in terms of production costs. But oh no, we can't have the players get a tiny bit of extra value for the same price. It's the same with pre-con decks and Masters-set-like products. This open display of greed has cooled down my desire to buy sealed product by a lot.
@theotherkevindubrow
@theotherkevindubrow 3 жыл бұрын
Professor, you hit the nail on the head. My wife and I used to do a quasi-sealed against each other with these bundles (augmenting with a theme booster or something). I can only communicate with WotC using my wallet, so I'm giving bundles like this a hard pass.

I'm in the same boat (though with my brother). I am however gonna get the innistrad bundles because I love innistrad but after that I think I'm out. For Midnight hunt we tried doing bundle and buying a full set of commons (1 of each) and trying to do nearly-sealed like that. It worked ok, but we did get sort of "themed" since over half of the set booster cards were red. Gotta love that luck of the draw :D. Though this drives the price to roughly equal to 12 draft boosters, from my LGS anyway.

I do the same thing with girlfriend and was very disappointed to only see the change in the bundle contents *after* I had preordered it. I ended up also getting a set of 3 draft boosters and we are hoping that, by mixing all of the boosters and doing a Winston Draft, the changes from draft to set boosters won't complicate things too much (not very optimistic though!).

When I was a wee magic player back in 2009 the set booklet was my favorite part of a fat pack. So much fun lore and the card gallery was actually useful before that information became easy to find online. I remember looking at those booklets for hours as a kid.

In South Africa, set boosters are exponentially more expensive and, from my experience opening them, they don’t hold the value you pay for. The reason I purchase the bundles here is because it was cheaper to buy one of these than it was to buy x10 booster packs. It felt like I was getting mad value as it came with the cool storage container and a sweet dice. As someone who enjoys cracking packs, I loved the ‘extra’ boosters. Having cracked one of these bundles, I felt totally underwhelmed.

I don't know why, but the "poster" now being a cut out and the box that's just filler REALLY pushed me over the edge. I was already rambling at the screen about how they could just make the poster smaller & not have that box, but the poster is now just trash too, so why not just wrap the actual card box with the packs in it & *just fucking sell us that!!!!* A pack of the full art lands would also be a great incentive for people to buy this instead of 8 packs, if they don't already care about the box or spin-down. 6 Draft, 3 Set & 1 Collectors booster is an amazing idea.

I just had a conversation about the entertainment complex where I work dialing back/leaving dormant certain elements of the guests' overall experience. The problem is that some people show up for A or B and others prefer C or D and even those who only like E will take advantage of B as long as they're here. The point is that if C or F aren't there because "it's not making enough money" should be irrelevant because it's all about the total experience. As the conversation progressed, I began to have a sense of deja vu, but I couldn't remember what product or service that was the subject of a previous conversation. Quite randomly, this video showed up on my feed and now I remember. "Fat Packs" have been getting slimmer and slimmer. Prof presents a lot of good ideas to refresh the idea of Bundles. I like having themed accessories way more than booster packs. I can get packs anywhere. However, if you must include them, a variety of boosters would be nice.

Well I still purchase products from my LGS and watching "is it worth to buy..." series at home , the gamble itself kinda makes me...Uh...Idk , transform to a normal person for just few minutes? Then flip back to a 0/1 bulk lol. And I'd like to collect pre-constructed deck , although some of them were graded-low but I still love pre-cons!! Even just a pair of mono- color welcome decks. So now I'm in a journey of seeking cheap pre-con decks and fat packs(Bundles) to fill my collection up. Thank you for making these videos as reference for "to buy or not to buy."

Thanks for this video, as usual it is 100% spot on I would like to share my opinion about the current situation regarding set boosters: I have the impression that with pushing set boosters WotC is increasing the price two times on its customers. One time honest and open and a second time in a more devious way. I always have had the 'ritual' of buying one bundle and one display for each set released. On top of what you mentioned (8 packs instead of 10, set boosters instead of draft) I also have the feeling that within set boosters certain cards are appearing at abnormal rates. I am talking about cards who have the special art treatment (at common and uncommon). Basically normally when I buy these products it is rare to have certain commons more than 4 times, it happens but it is rare. When I bought this time a bundle + a display (set boosters) I noticed that certain cards would show up 10 times where other commons and uncommons were pretty rare. I have a feeling that they made certain cards show up more often, most likely because they have the set-art-style. (examples: Tavern ruffian or Tirless Hauler)

I absolutely adored the bundles, bought one for nearly every single set for the last three years... The change to 8 set boosters over 10 draft boosters killed all my excitement in this product. I did sealed with those boosters quite often with friends, now I can't, and even without the drafting potential I just dislike cracking set boosters over regular ones. Guess I'll be buying the glow-in-the-dark dice by itself since the dice are still my personal favorite parts and ignoring the actual bundles unless they design to change them back/to something better.

6 draft, 3 set and one collector pack is such a good idea! Friends can play a sealed tournament and some or all the packs can be the prizes! It makes too much sense and wouldn't be insulting which seems to be the deciding factor in Wizards decision making...

I bought my nephew a $60 pack for his birthday which came with 3 decks. I don't remember the name of it but one of the decks was about squirrels and other cards were half cards where half of it would be a tiger and another car that you can combine. Anyway long story short it's been forever since I played magic and he has already been into it. Having 3 different decks to play along with all the interesting interactions interactions was A-blast. Some of the cards required you to be really loud and vocal and other cards required a bit of shadiness for them to work. What really impressed me with this game was the amount a person can learn through strategy strategy and other tactics. He is about 12 years old and it was very interesting watching him learn tactics and also how incredibly deceptive he could be at certain times. All in all it was the gift he plays with most. A fun experience too.

nice vid. I got the bundle this time again but am less excited about it for the reasons you mentioned. One point of value it had for me is that I was able to get it at discount on Amazon for $34 as a preorder one day, and use up reward money from my amazon card that I use, which kinda halfway made it free (though that means i don't use that money for other amazon purchases, so kinda not). I agree--6 draft boosters and 4 set boosters would be a great value.

I think its important to note that the value may change in different countries. In Australia you're actually saving $20 AUD (around 25-30 USD) on set boosters when buying a bundle. That's essentially two extra boosters, plus the extra bundle stuff for the price of six set boosters

I got my bundle for $35. I like they are set boosters now instead of draft boosters. I'm not interested in playing draft. Also I rather get more uncommons and rares than the bulk commons you always end up with when you buy draft boosters. At this price tag it gives me the fun of opening packs without needing to buy a box. Then on the money I save I can buy singles. ;)

I almost bought a bundle at my LGS yesterday. Decided against it because I never feel satisfied with the purchase. I took that money and bought a commander deck. That's the only decent value sealed product WOTC offers at this point, and barely so. After their run of $20 decks that were still fun and functional, paying twice that feels bad.

I really loved the idea you put forth with a bundle having 6 draft packs, 3 set packs and 1 collector's booster. It wouldve been so cool to buy this and have a sealed Tournament among friends with the prizes being the other packs, and you decide if everyone is wagering the collectors booster, the 3 set boosters, or all of it. I don't buy Magic products anymore because of this company being really anti consumer, but I would have made it a tradition to do this sealed with my playgroup at least once per set if they did it your way. I really can't believe how awesome something like that sounds.

I started playing/collecting Pokemon TCG in 2016, but got bored of the gameplay and lost interest by 2018. I have the TCG itch though. KeyForge (my current go to) only partially scratches the itch.

I remembered back when these were still called Fat Packs, and for ~$32, you'd get 2 boxes, a spin-down life counter, a pack of lands, 6 plastic card dividers, a paperback novel, a player guide, and 6 boosters packs. I got all fat packs from the original Time Spiral block. When Lorwyn/Shadowmoor rolled around, the fat packs were reduced to only one box, but you now got 8 boosters instead of 6. I stopped buying fat packs when they ditched the novels for the Alara block.

As someone who has only been playing MTG for a little over a year I have bought a few of these, I love the feel of opening new packs of cards and the set boosters in Midnight Hunt were more fun to open than the previous draft boosters in bundles. That being said I didn't purchase this one for myself but got it as a present, and I think that's where the real value of these bundles is now - present suggestions for family members. I've got a few to use the storage boxes for spare cards, and the dice are fun to collect, and while the boosters are fun to open they're not an efficient way of getting playable cards, so I'm already at the point where I only buy singles and commander precons for myself.

Great video Proffessor! Your review is the first I've seen to mention the difference in the number of cards between Set boosters and Draft boosters. Many people talk about the best-case scenario of the Set boosters containing "multiple rares and less jank" than draft boosters as though every pack contains that value. The worst-case scenario, and closer to typical, is that a Set booster will contain 1 rare, 2 uncommons, and 8 commons. This, in my opinion, is not any "less jank" than a draft booster which contain 1 rare, 3 uncommons, and 10 commons. In addition to those numbers, the Set booster comes with a 25% mark-up in price. I agree with your statement that Set boosters are an illusion of better value. Last time I checked, 20% less cards (12 vs 15) with a "chance" of more rares is not not worth 25% more. Because I believe a Set Booster is of "equal value" to a Draft Booster, I loved your idea of including a variety of boosters in the bundle making the product more ubiquitous for every kind of buyer; my favorite being 6 Draft + 4 Set boosters. The 6 Draft boosters cater to the player and the 4 Set boosters cater to the collector.

I tend to buy bundles, but only at my LGS, as a way of getting some profits flowing for them. I don't mind the price increase on the packs cause I value the spin down pretty highly now that they're the bigger oversized dice. I like those a lot better, and I wanna collect all of them since I already have one from each set since they started making them. Thanks for the review Prof. -Dave.

I used to always picked up set Bundles, mostly because I didn't want to buy a set Box and I still wanted to pick up some packs to open, I also liked getting the dice, a few lands and the box. The booklet that came with some lore was also really nice. Now though, it doesn't really feel like a "Bundle" anymore. WotC seems to constantly cut value out of their products a little bit at a time. If they provided, like you said, 6 draft packs, 4 set boosters, the spin-down dice, and a the booklet for the current price, I would be all for that.
