NFL Network draft analyst Lance Zierlein joins Colin Cowherd to discuss whether Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy is an NFL-ready QB amidst various scouting reports on the National Champion. He then explains why he 'barely' ranks USC QB Caleb Williams over LSU's Jayden Daniels. Watch as Zierlein also breaks down why taking an offensive lineman is more crucial than a wide receiver in the first round.

I will admit JJ is closest to guys like Quinn/Harrington/Sanchez, but I have a feeling he's gonna be good.. he's got a stronger arm than Colin is giving him credit for. He just turned 21. A lot of it really was circumstantial. He was just operating system Harbaugh gave him. Every game tho, he would make a couple high level NFL plays. I can see A Smith comp in terms of his pros play style, but he's a stronger athlete. He's like Alex Smith+. That's potentially a really good QB in the right situation. My prediction...Colin is gonna look back 5 yrs from now and realize he was undervaluing JJ. But he'll skate around it and justify himself like he always does haha

Colin started spewing his anti JJ narrative months ago. And he just will not let it go! He’s gonna look stupid when JJ does great things in the NFL.

I'd actually like to see the hit/miss rate on the other rounds as well. I'd like to know if the hit rate on WRs actually rises relative to other positions.

The danger with the concept of not assuming jj can’t do something because he hasn’t been asked to is the inverse that maybe he wasn’t asked because he can’t.

Packers found two team HOF WRs in second round in recent years: Davante Adams and Jordy Nelson. When the team has used a first round pick on a WR it has hit at about a 50% rate. Sterling Sharpe, taken 7th overall in 1988, might have approached Jerry Rice's numbers except for his unfortunate neck injury that ended his career after seven seasons. Javon Walker, taken 20th overall in 2002, wasn't exactly a bust. He had a decent career, but many wide receivers taken later in the draft performed as well or better..

Wrs in the first round have hit FAAAAAR more in recent years. Just in the past 4 drafts, in the first round, you have chase, jefferson, waddle, smith, lamb, aiyuk, wilson, olave. All top tier wrs. 2020, 21, 22 were all very good for wrs taken in the first. And we still have yet to see some of their ceilings. (This is why i dont count 23 draft picks yet, but zay flowers is a beast). Times change, scouting changes, level of talent at the college level for specific positions change. Harrison jr, nabers, and odunze are all going to be legit at the next level

The Packers drafted James Lofton and Sterling Sharpe in the first round. Also Don Hutson. So no, their prejudice against drafting receivers in the first round has not been "forever".

8:35 Darrius Heyward Bey & Tavon Austin we’re severely overdrafted. If they went in the 2nd round like they should have, they probably would be looked at differently.

Cherry picked stats at the end. Look back at past 5 seasons WR hit rate is likely double close to triple the graphic used. Different game than 2000s football Collin

I don't understand the hype on McCarthy. Just because MI won the National Championship, that does not make him a good QB. If you look at his statistics against ranked teams, he was not good at all.

You know Sam Darnold was pretty hyped in college. Is JJ going to be exceedingly better? Better enough to give up multiple high picks? Or a vanilla run of the mill quarterback? Would roll the dice for Jayden and that’s it.

Well if all the qb’s in the 2024 NFL Draft I’d say JJ is the most ready considering he came in first place last year of all the qb’s by winning the national title and also going undefeated the entire season. Caleb, the so called chosen one and Jayden also a so called chosen one have never came in first place by winning the national title. Just like Lamar Jackson of the NFL.
