EDIT: Sorry, I meant Shadow of the Ninja, not "Return of the Ninja," maybe I was listening to "Return of the Mack" too much lately or something.
Solid game but nothing spectacular, with your classic NES cheap difficulty...

Honestly a bit surprised to see someone compare it to Ninja Gaiden II, since I think the better comparison is Sunsofts Batman. All of your attacks are lifted straight from that game, as are most of the enemies, level design and level hazards. I'm almost willing to say that the gears that you were surprised hurt you are pixel by pixel identical to the ones in Batman!

I personally see it as a blend between the two, really. It's definitely derivative, but ripping off two of the best platformers of the 8-bit era still creates a fun game! (And he didn't even mention the awesome music.)

Sure, but there is a lot like this. People tend to look at classic NES, with games before 1990. Games like Zelda or SMB look crap. But NES 2.0, the NES that sold by the buckloads alongside the SNES as budget alternative, has many awesome looking games. Shatterhand, Batman, Power Blade, Double Dragon II, Isolated Warrior, Darkwing Duck...

I had this game as a kid. I thought it was pretty well done. I remember it being a lot easier than Ninja Gaiden, and totally beatable. As I recall, the story says that one of the main character's ancestors was a kabuki performer, which is why he turns into one when he goes into the computer. "O'Conner" sounds Irish to me, but oh well.

I put this game in the NES Batman genre. It's where you are a small sprite and can punch things. Human Entertainment also made Monster Party which is a personal favorite of mine. They added Kabuki to the title at the last minute of development. Maybe to avoid confusion with Quantum Leap? I enjoy this game for it's innovation but is pretty short. Still worth playing though.

I gotta say, I really do love the flow of this one. Most levels focus more on obstacle course style platforming than on fighting enemies, which encourages you to keep your momentum going. It almost compels you to try to play it like a speedrunner because the extreme kabuki parkour stuff feels so satisfying.

totally relate to that "i wish i had this console when i was a kid, all i did was watching all those games go by", it happened to me with the n64. I was able to finally buy one in 2004 and then I started catching up on all the games I've seen in magazine and gaming tv shows (jet force gemini and banjo kazooie were the big ones, and I even had dreams with diddy kong racing!). It was so liberating. Anyways, awesome video as always, it's so cool to know facts like how this game was marketed in the US. Loved the 90s ad lol

Played as kid. Got very proud when I completed stage 2. I distinctively remember having to do 'long-jumps', probably with these things in the air you hold on to to thrust yourself to the next. As for the boss difficulties, sure the 'AI' or RNG is 50/50 on various moves. However if you study their movements you can predict where they will be. I definitely like the game for these reasons and it's speed. Still got the original.

In fact, in the japanese version the main protagonist is a 15 years old child. And translated the name of the game is " The Circle of Heaven and Hell" so.... There are some differences. Is a solid game for me. Thanks for the review man. Keep the work up Ps.... The fella is a Kabuki because his subconscious took that form when he infiltrates into the computer to eliminate the virus and supposedly the subconscious could take a random form depending on the person.... Growing up we had a handful of Ness games, Super Mario 3, Legend of Zelda 1 and 2, Master Blaster, TMNT(the 1st one) Battle Toads and the Adventures of Bayou Billy(which i called The Crocodile Dundee Game.) Even though i was a toddler and could barely play them, the music left a deep emotional impression on me. Master Blasters opening theme combined with the frog jumping down the hole cinema always filled me with this sadness, I wanted the kid to rescue his beloved frog so badly!

Anything that Human did back then I've always enjoyed trying, they were always so unique and weird, especially my favorite of theirs, Clocktower. Btw, not sure if you ever got around to it, Drunk, but might I suggest you give Conquest of the Crystal Palace by Asmik for the NES a try someday. Its another mid B tier game imo, but an enjoyable and often overlooked game with a cool little puppy mechanic :P. Oh, and *you* have a great rest of your day, as well.
