Right. I’m italian, me and my friend are watching this drama and we comment few episode. We have never felt offended. We are pretty amused by the drama itself, like other viewer. @@shia6757 hes actually pretty good. i think he finds a bit hard to pronunce long sentences and as an italian i can hear that he’s breaking them, but taken them alone he sounds like a native speaker. he has an accent yes, and sometimes he’s a bit stiff, but his pronunciation is 9.5 times out of ten correct.

@@shia6757 I'm italian and you can tell he's not a native speaker. There are some words that he pronounces 100% correctly but you can see it's not natural and does so because somebody told him the right accent. A lot of phrases are totally not understandable. Most of them are kinda understandable, the pronunciation is lowkey/highkey right but the intonation of the sentence is almost always wrong. I'm not saying he didn't do a good job, i think he did an amazing job for someone completely new to the language, but I still need to read the subtitles if i wanna know 100% of what he's saying when he speaks italian ahahah. Also sometimes the choice of words is strange and unnatural.

I'm Italian and I'm not offended at all and I find the show hilarious. And in all truth, I'm obsessed with it. Is there a bit of stereotyping? Yes, but it's not overdone, it's somewhat really well "balanced". In other words, it could have been way worse, and most of the stereotypes in the show are celebrated and not ridiculed or hated on.

Lol! I totally agree. I'm Italian American. I've grown up seeing a lot of Italian stereotyping, but honestly, I've never cared! It's usually all just in good fun and not meant to be mean. do people actually take kdrama seriously? In most dramas you have adult characters barely kissing on the 8th episode and having the mental maturity of kindergarteners, avoiding sexuality like a plague, but okay with being borderline alcoholics, there's a minimum of two breakups that are always due to some lame self-sacrifice or misunderstanding that can be solved by talking, it's 99% rich man who apparently has nothing to do all day falling in love with a poor woman after some volatile encounter, the majority of times with a bad personality until he falls in love, throw in an ex returning from abroad, disapproving parents, a dash of childhood trauma and characters most definitely having met as children. Oh, and some car accident/hospital scene/assault and occasional amnesia that will bring the characters back together. Botched cultural references are very very low on the list of problems with kdrama and I would actually be disappointed not to get some good laughs from the cringe of watching them misinterpret European cultures lol.

For instance, I can tell you that Italian food in Boston’s Italian Neighborhood (North End) is absolute garbage in comparison to the food in Rome. Italian living in Korea 😀 I'm actually Sicilian where the mafia is from. Vincenzo is not offensive at all to me, it does push a stereotype but I find it incredibly funny and I'm following it every week. I don't think Italians get easily offended by things like this :) I showed the clips where he speaks Italian to my parents as well and they found it so hilarious. As for the Mafia part, it's a painful part of our history, but it exists, the only thing that changed is that nowadays the Mafia are the big conglomerates and politicians, so I think that drama did a fair job at portraying it :)

The pole dance is from South-Italy... it is an old traditional dance, so probably young people never saw or heard about it. I come from Sicily, and I remember when I was in primary school a few of my friends had to learn it for the carnival fest. When I saw it on the drama, I was surprised... they did a goog job researching this!

Does he sound fluent? No, not even close, his accent is off like she mentioned (funny enough, when he clearly means to say "papà" aka "father", it sounds like "pappa", which is the word that toddlers use when referring to food. I found this so cute). Did she say that the actor did a bad job considering the time that he had to prepare the part? No, she didn't. I'm Italian and this is the first kdrama that I watch with my entire family. Every weekend when it airs we sit in the living room and watch it. My parents used to not want to watch Korean shows with me cause they hate subtitles but they like this one so much, they actually stopped minding the subs and they also are picking up on the korean language 😅 I have to say this drama is definitely one of the best ones rn. We take no offense, Song Joong-ki speaks Italian well and the stereotypes are not done in an offensive manner but is pure comedy even in Italian shows they use some of those jokes etc. so I don't mind.

It's true. In Italy we are very respectful of our regional recipes, I'm in Florence and I would never call a random cake I made with some candied fruit 'pastiera napoletana' nor would I call some random meat sauce 'ragù'. They have very specific recipes, origins and tradition. The other day I saw on BBCFood a recipe for "Roasted cauliflower & hazelnut carbonara" and everything inside me started screaming "IT'S NOT CARBONARA, CARBONARA HAS FOUR F*UCKING INGREDIENTS! EGG! They also ruined his business and left my grandmother penniless because he wouldn’t pay them or let them corrupt his produce company. That being said, it doesn’t bother me. When K-pop stars play Mafia it doesn’t bother me. Itzy’s new concept doesn’t bother me. Because its not cultural appropriation. It’s cultural ignorance. What’s the difference? A bunch of American, wealthy white privileged people who became wealthy because their ancestors got rich from the labor of enslaved people are engaging in appropriation. When they wear blackface or put on Native American clothing for Halloween. They are taking from cultures that their ancestors destroyed and making them playthings. That’s appropriation. So it’s not the same. The show is extremely entertaining and if anyone reading this is offended on my behalf, you can stop. It’s OK. Really. I think we should distinguish between Italian descendants living in other countries and real Italians. I am Italian living in Italy and born here, and I think that too often Italy is thought to be just food, mafia, fashion, old music. These are stereotypes, but this drama is not the worse thing ever, the plot it’s not bad, but I think we should be aware that mafia it’s not what the drama shows: mafia it’s a very huge problem in Italy, so many people died and for Italians it’s a open wound. They simply took aspects of the stereotype of italian mafia as a background for their, yet again, fictional story of a fictional character. The only offensive thing about this drama is the romanticisation of the mafia. Us italians know how dangerous and terrifying it is, but because of many series, books and misinformation in general, people around the world tend to sympathize with mafia members and with this criminal association. But apart from that, i really appreciate the effort to speak italian in "Vincenzo" and i find the series funny and enjoyable.

Hi! Thank you for your video. I am really glad you decided to talk about this. As many have expressed in their comments, Italians usually laugh about the stereotypes. We still get offended if some people exceeds the limits, but that is not Vincenzo's case. However, I can't quite get over the topic they decided to portray on screen, which is Mafia. It's not easy to explain to non-Italians what Mafia (and other criminal organizations) do to our society, and I am not the most qualified person to do so. Still, I will try my best. Mafia is a huge problem in Italy, it is the cancer of our society. It is cruel, violent and corrupted. And yet, most foreign movies represents it as if there is something romantic in it. I am thinking about the Godfather, which in a way started the trend of the 'Cool Mafia Guy', but probably the worst results are movies like 365 days. Some people (not everyone) in other countries tend to watch these movies and think 'Wow, Mafia is cool.' And so, the romanticization of Mafia begins. Vincezo, unfortunately, is on this trend. The message in this kdrama is contradictory: Vincenzo is presented as THE exception, the only good, attractive mafia man you can find, the beautiful anti-hero that can be appreciated by the public. I am aware that this is all fictional, but I am afraid that the message transmitted might have sad consequences and it will make Mafia more likeable to foreigners. Moreover, I am afraid it will damage the fight against Mafia as well. Because there are people fighting Mafia and they are risking their lives too. Some of them died, like Falcone and Borsellino and many, many others. Some others have lost part of their freedom and live constantly under police protection. It is thanks to their sacrifices that we are able to enjoy a more hopeful future. Therefore, the romanticizing Mafia is disrespectful to them and to the people near them. As a good youtuber once said, "The romanticized and 'passionate' representation of Mafioso makes it so that their crime is trivialized and minimized, when it is a problem that afflicts our society. The Mafia goes forward thanks to superficiality and ignorance, and it can only be fought with the weapon that is knowledge. The Mafia never interrupted its activities, and those who fight it haven't stopped doing it either." I am sorry if what I wrote is a bit unclear and really, really long, but please, just be aware of the damage these medias can make

All what you said is also my thoughts too. I was pretty much flustered and hate it when some of my fellowmen says they want to become Mafia Members too because of Vincenzo. Like... Hey!! It's still a dangerous organized crime. I'm not Italian but i know that the Mafia shouldn't have been romanticized. To me though, The Godfather wasn't that romanticized since Michael Corleone is still a dangerous guy who ordered death to many people in the second film unlike Vincenzo who goes on protecting the Geumga Plaza Tenants.

So I watch this kdrama together with my dad whose Italian, and he doesn't think it's offensive but he find it hilarious and entertaining. He said that you don't need to take things like this too serious, cuz it's intended to make people laugh and having fun watching it. He really enjoys watching it, he really likes Vincenzo.

Emily in Paris I am French by the way, and I am all for second degree but man this was horrible to watch. and if I may add, I have been learning Italian for years and been there a few times, I never felt a hint of cringe watching Vincenzo and Im sure Italians wouldn't mind the show. Also I think the main actor did a terrific job learning these few phrases, it must have been tough for a Korean. Like it's "easier" for French, Spanish or Romanian people to learn another latin language but for someone from Asia, I assume it's another story. As an italian I’m not offendend. It’s just a k-drama and you shouldn’t take it SO seriously. They didn’t do a lot of reserches about our food or traditions but Song Joong-ki did a good job. I think the only part that it should have taken more seriously is the “mafia” part. it’s still a serious topic here in Italy... many lives have been taken away from it. (sorry for my broken English but I wanted to share with foreigners my point of view. Of course it’s not every italian point of view. Never generalise)

I think that there's a difference between poking at a bunch of stereotypes for entertainment purposes (we live for this type of comedy in Italy) and using a stereotype to make a mockery of a whole country. I'm sicilian and I'm not offended. Now, if anybody from any other country on this planet (Italy included) came to me with his/her hands rapidly moving, talking about 'mafia, pizza, blablabla', I'd be angry in a "If you don't walk away from me I'm going to crucify you with my heels" way. This is not the case, tho. If Vincenzo stays away from pineapple on pizza nobody in Italy will think this kdrama is insulting -- our priorities are confusing, I know, let it go.

I love this drama: the characters, the silly situations, the plot, the super handsome Vincenzo. I love that Vincenzo makes an effort to speak Italian and uses many sayings. It makes so much sense to insert Italian in the drama. Good or bad, I love his accent, and it makes him sexier; this goes with Jan Jun Woo and his English. Many kdramas have characters that "lived, studied or were raised" in the USA but never said a word in English in the drama as Jan Jun Woo does. Kdramas are my only addiction-hobby-relax time, and I feel so sorry how they get so scrutinized. Other countries do whatever they want with their series and movies, and they never get so scanned as kdramas. Thank you to all the Italians who love the drama and are not overreacting to it as other cultures tend to do. Viva Vincenzo, bravo!!!

There is a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. Song Joong Ki in an interview tells about the difficulty trying to speak another language well when the placement of the tongue and vocal folds are used differently than his life long native language, it would be a hard adjustment for anyone. This is a delightful dark Rom com. Not a documentary on Italian life, food, and culture. It just a fun show to watch.

First of all THANK YOU so much for asking opinions to Italians. Recently I found a lot of offensive comments from strangers insulting us because of the Itzy's comeback and made me feel so sad and upset. Anyway, about Vincenzo : I watched the drama and I actually liked it, maybe just a few scenes didn't match my personal taste because it was a little bit too " stereotyped " but I guess other Italians were ok with it ( plus in every country people tend to have stereotypes of other nationalities, so I'm not that surprised ). Anyway I agree with the girl at 04:28 , overseas the Mafia is usually associated to the Godfather movie when it's actually pretty different nowadays. If you want to have an actual idea on how the Mafia works in the 21th Century I recommend the " Suburra " & " Gomorra " TV shows ( it's about the Roman & Neapolitan Mafia ) , plus as a Roman I guarantee that Suburra is very accurate. We appreciate the fact that other countries are praising Italy so much ! However, Mafia is a very delicate argument and people should not think that is something to make fun of or " not a deep thing ". I see a lot of Italians thinking that it's ok to have a game called " Mafia " or even accepting aesthetic concepts that romanticize Mafia. Unfortunately if we, as italians, don't educate ourselves in the first place then it would be very difficult to do the same with strangers. I watched a lot of documentaries with my family and unfortunately my parents lived in the 70/80s terrible attacks because of Mafia, that's why they wanted me to understand how dangerous it is. I hope to see people being less disrespectful towards us and stop saying stuff like " You're white, shut up ", " Y'all so sensitive " or " I cooka da pizza ( and no, it's not funny ) . Hi, i'm italian too! I didn't watch the show yet because it will be air in may in italy, but i saw some clips on youtube. I think that this show will be very fun for us italian to watch, the actor did a great job,as far as i know, in talking italian.We are also very used to this kind of stereotipes so it's not a problem at all. The only thing that worries me is the romaticize of mafia, let me clear, the problem is not this drama in particular but all the movies that i've watched regarding mafia don't depicted the true at all. Mafia isn't cool, they kill and brutalise people! I'm from southern Italy so I know very well what I'm saying, maybe you do not see them "at work" but you can definitivly feel them in the society! So, I can't wait to watch this drama, but I think also that we italians need to spread awareness around this topic so the foreign people can really understand that being mafioso is not a very good thing! :)

It's so cool to see what Italians think about Vincenzo. I'm currently watching the drama and I thoroughly enjoy it, it's hilarious and the plot is pretty nice too. But most importantly, I'm glad that Italians are so chill about the drama and also find enjoyment in it. I think this is also a good reminder for watchers to take dramas as simply dramas. Vincenzo is a drama, not a documentary. It's not going to be picture perfect. But I have to admit, it's pretty funny in a harmless way and quite entertaining. My mother and I love the drama!❤ We are not Italians, but African U.S. Americans from Chicago, Illinois. I agree with the Italian panel on the Italian food. Here in Chicago, the Italian food is not authentically Italian. When the Italian immigrants arrived in Chicago many years ago, they changed the food because the men worked in stockyards, road infrastructure, construction, railroads, and factories. More meat, bread, potatoes, and cheese was added to their food so that the men can be stronger and work longer, like 14 hours.

As an Italian interested in anthropology and sociology (and very critical towards the concept of cultural appropriation), I would say that one can never speak for the whole population of their country and/or decide what is offensive or what isn't for the entire nation. Some people find the representation of Mafia in movies and series romanticised and offensive, some are so used to it that do not see anything wrong with it and maybe just get offended for recurring stereotypes. I feel like this representation in general was way less problematic than literally anything Americans do when they represent Italians, mafia etc

I'm pretty sure that studies have been done about it too. It's like a blind spot. Yes we know we do it but to what extent not so much lol. My Italian family goes back1000 years in the boot, and I find the show throughly entertaining. The Korean take on the Italian chef amusing and not offensive , if anything it points out the simple humor of the fish out of water theme. When the chef be money the loss of his precious porceline I laughed because it reminded me of my own Nonna. She valued her tableware over any physical fight, and " take it outside" was the law. I speak Arabic and the same thing happened in descendants of the sun and the K2. They brought actors who doesn’t even speak Arabic and say some dub7)3&!;) that might sound Arabic to ppl. They wrote in Arabic from left to right instead of right to left e.g Apple= Elppa. Joongki told kids in his drama to go to the party instead of going inside 😂. I think that as an Italian and a Sicilian, the really offensive part of the series remains how the Mafia issue is handled in part, and how it is described. The mafia, or rather the mafias, are a too complex and articulated context and which unfortunately for the simplicity of the plot have undergone a very stereotyped treatment, taking the Italian American mafia more as a model of films like "The Godfather", rather than asking for more accurate advice on the real face of this wound still existing today to a sociologist or an investigative journalist for advice. I was a child but I remember very well the explosion, the cloud of smoke, the crazy ambulances and the tears and dismay of all the witnesses of the Capace massacre, while with my mother we passed near the site of the massacre because my school was really near to the place of the explosion. A friend of mine from middle school tells me about the drama of having had to watch live as a child, the explosion of the car bomb and the death of Paolo Borsellino, blood and rubble everywhere, because he lived in the same building as the judge's mother. And I could go on indefinitely. Mafia is NOT COOL...And yes..if Vincenzo was a "consigliere" an important member of south Italy Criminal Organization like, Stidda, Cosa nostra, Andrangheta, Camorra o Sacra Corona Unita, ......a really good portrait of a men like this It would have been much cruder, more violent and more despotic. Let's say that the attitude of the villains of the series and their way of acting is much closer to what we could have expected from a mafia in reality. Having said that it is still a comedy, and a fictional story, in addition the protagonist also wants to avoid getting too noticed so there is no real exposure. Let's say that more than Vincenzo's attitude, and the lightness that transpires from the rest of the cast when they discover that he is a mafioso who turns up his nose. The same agent of the International Police, or of the head of this ... well ... leaves a little perplexed, even if I have found perhaps much more irony in this about how stereotypes work with people's minds and how they alter perceptions of a foreign public on the harsh reality of the facts. For the rest, well, the series is still a very enjoyable product, Song Joong-ki was really very good! And cultural stereotypes make you smile in the end, no Italian really cares, since we play a lot of humor on joking about stereotypes and self-irony. Let's say my vote is a nice 7 (since I prefer to forget the Mafia issue). However, as they pointed out about Vincenzo's position within the mafia clan, being an adopted grandson or in any case an adopted son, well it could be that out of affection and over time by asserting himself he has come to obtain respect from his father / grandfather. What is certain and has been well transposed is the fact that by the other members of the clan and other families he would always have been perceived as a foreigner. The mafia is based on a family / tribal conception and structure, therefore it does not conceive of adoptions or the acquisition of members of other ethnic groups or mixed marriages from an ethnic point of view except for strategic purposes and even them with great rarity.

I feel the difference is common "Korean stereotypes" are plagued by racialism, unlike well known Italian stereotypes. For example, think of a stereotype that is common place in Italy and perhaps broader Europe, that is SPECIFIC to ONLY Korea/Korean's. Chance's are you can't, because the majority of well known stereotypes that are attributed to Koreans are attributed to East/Southeast Asian people on the whole. Vietnam, Thailand, China and South Korea are all vastly different nations with their own distinct cultures, and yet popular stereotypes rarely vary within "Western" countries. I don't see Italian tropes like the Mafia boss or pasta elitism being ascribed to Europeans overall. As flawed or inaccurate as meny Italian stereotypes might be, they don't reinforce biases among entire racial groups. This is most likely why there easier to laugh at, but that will always come down to the individual.
