Fun Fact: I was born in Kenya.
When I tell people I was born in Kenya, the frequently asked question I get asked is.. IS KENYA SAFE?
But the problem with me answering this question is that my parents who lived there for 16 years only surrounded themselves with other Indians. So their perception is skewed to some degree. And I moved to America when I was 3, so I barely remember anything.
But I was still curious to answer this question, so I connected with a local who has lived in Kenya her whole life to help me answer this question: Is Kenya safe?
Enjoy.

Kenya might have issues like poverty and corruption but it's much safer compared to other African countries with exception of Botswana and Namibia. The only kind of theft here is like pickpocketing. Try South Africa or some Latin American countries and you will know what real crime is.

I didn't know that Kenya had these stereotypes. I'm in the US, and have known and been friends with many people from Kenya. Most were here for med school, or some high end degree. Most can't wait to get back "home". As far as being safe, the murder rate in my city, Birmingham, Alabama is 60 per 100k, which is twice the rate of Mombasa at 27 per 100k. Kenya's cities are way safer than American cities.

I visited Nairobi in 1995. At the time the "downtown" consisted of about 3x3 blocks of paved roads. A paved road lead out of the downtown through Uhuru park, past a big foreigner hotel to the guarded university complex my family was staying in. The paved road confined to the President's house. I remember one building in the downtown looked like an upside down robot. It was very strange. All other roads were dirt only. We called the pizza restaurant and went to pick up the pizza. Run by an Indian family... The pizzas were about 7 or 8 inches across. As a 30-something North American male (non-drinker) I could have eaten both of them and the salad my family prepared all on my own. I had to hold back so there was food for all 3 of us... Fun fact: my sister was dying for a curry. About the 3rd week she kind of begged me to have a curry. That's when we discovered she thought I only ate bland food. It came as an enormous relief to her to learn I loved curries. She had bent her diet to accommodate my 12 year old self... (The kid who wouldn't eat anything but super bland and limited food!) That's love right there! Culture shock for sure! The city has vastly gown since then!

All I got to say is, anybody that doesn’t like Africa fellas, you don’t have to come, I’m tired of disrespectful Foreigners being worshiped on the continent. Anyways, much love from Cameroon 🇨🇲 live with pride or die now.

There is no "Kenyan" look, race, colour or identity. Anyone can be Kenyan, regardless of their origin. So the assumption of "look Kenyan" is misleading.

Well said, my parents lived there for 16 years and they were always targeted since they were Indian. So I was basing this story off their long term stay in the country :) But I enjoyed your input
