Thank you, Jeremy, for giving the shout out Korg's excellent home pianos deserve. I bought a Korg C1 Air to learn on two years ago, & am so glad I didn't give in to the marketing of the more popular brands. The Korg has proven to be a real joy. After two years, I haven't outgrown it: the more I learn, the more rewarding it is to play.

Partly based on this review I went to buy my new LP-380. I was surprised and I liked the great quality of the Japanese technology and the RH3 action on it. Also liked the power of sound and the triple pedal. Since I am a beginner student of piano I really apreciate your recomendation. Thank you so much.

Made in Japan? It's more like assembled in Japan. My bro in-law in Malaysia worked for a company which supplies, among other things, the wooden frames, panels & cabinets to digital piano manufacturers overseas. He once mentioned that his boss had instructed him & his colleagues to send out wooden replacement parts because Korg's headquarters had complained that a batch of digital pianos, which arrived in Singapore & Malaysia from Japan, were found to have wood veneer problems.

I once had a LP380 (which I believe is basically a LP380U without the USB port & related features), which I already sold off after almost 2 years of ownership. During the 1st year of ownership, there were the following issues; 1. The on/off power button did not work because the appendage underneath the plastic button that links to the actual push contact power switch on a circuit board behind the front/top panel of the piano, had suddenly broken off (I swear I never ever used excessive force on this piano). The entire front top plastic panel was replaced (fortunately under warranty) to rectify this. 2. Once while playing the piano, the sound had suddenly died off by itself although the piano's power was still on. To rectify this, the piano's circuit board module was replaced, also fortunately under warranty. 3. After pressing down the key, it would not rise back up fully when released. This happened to several keys simultaneously. After the repairs (again fortunately under warranty), the given explanation is that the guide for each key needed to be realigned and relubricated. It was about into one and a half years of ownership, I noticed that its wood veneer had 'wrinkles' & a few months later, the veneer was beginning to peel away at some places. In addition, some of the keys were again not rising fully back up after being released, and that was when I decided to sell it off. To be fair, one of my office colleagues also has the same model, and it does not have any serious issues, except that its circuit board module had to be replaced once, because there were some strange noises when the key was pressed. It appears to be some inconsistent quality control here, which would not have happened if the parts and components were made from scratch in Japan itself and make the entire product truly made in Japan.

I've been playing and keeping a look at LOTS of differents digital pianos from different prices and brands. Korg LP380 is definitely the BEST for the price. Another great piano is Privia, but Korg 380 is still a little bit better. However, it's not as good as Clavinova, but clavinova costs minimum the double of the price. Definitely Korg 380 will work very, very well for 98% of people, even well trainned ears

Jeremy thanks. hmmm may have (definitely) swayed me from a Yamaha P-515 or Kawai ES920... New to (e)piano it's my bucket list to buy and begin with full weighted graded escapement, best (piano) sound, app included, highest wattage onboard speakers, ability to move room to room and possibly to a cottage rental this summer without removing keyboard from home stand, most polyphony and 3 pedals.... my limit being under(yay)/around(grit teeth) 2000.00 CAD I am 66 now just retired, I played from 8 to 10 yo full sized accordion to Gr 3, but when I tried piano my small hands (reach back then was 19cm now 18+cm; 7.5+ inches to 8.1 inches) killed my enthusiam. I went to guitar with smaller frets. My intent is to go ahead now with a digital piano after having studying piano theory for the last three months then when playing reasonably proficient, get a Cunningham Baby Grand Piano with a DS5.5 keyboard for home. Or really, any acoustic piano used or new that can be fitted with the DS5.5 I cannot quite explain it clearly in words but you, and Piano From Scratch have really elevated my excitement and enthusiasm to dig deep and set a daily and weekly schedule of practising. Always (like going to work) the same time sit up straight, and same length of sessions and always lately going to the parts that I am having difficulty with first. The only cheat accessory I am currently using is three glued together silicon Piano Rake strips laid onto the top of the keys. I am practising reading sheet music with a pair of eye glasses that have a strip of paper taped to the bottom so I cannot look at my fingers easily (but, sometimes do). When I feel I need to break I watch Synthesia type videos on KZbin and follow the keys with with my Piano Rake setup so I can play actual songs slowly at my own pace. Great way to excercise and strreeetch my fingers. Thank You so much for your clear and enjoyable videos on playing and piano comparisons (under 500, 250 vs 2500 etc) I'm on my way, on my road of personal discovery and bucket list fulfilment. When I watch you play piano; it speaks emotionally to me. I have to admit I get teary eyed gosh darn and I WILL PLAY LIKE THAT... some day.

Another great quality product with good sound, features, and value, etc. But... for $250 more, I can get a Roland RD 88, even at my local music store I have dealt with for years. To me, it'svthe best pro level digital piano at that price, with cutting sounds, action and everything else, with their Supernatural keyboard and Zen Core sound engines from their expensive flagship Fantom workstations. Also compact. You should review one if you can get hold of one, even to just review it, but I guarantee, that you would want to get one.

@jjacob25101 2 жыл бұрын
@@gustavopaulette3496 I am not talking about high end acoustic pianos, and their keyboard action. Those can cost as much as expensive luxury or super exotic cars, or even houses. We're talking about what has been made affordable thoughout the years with different levels of emulations of real keyboards, and acoustic and ekectric pianos. The new Fender Rhodes MK 8 electric pianos being built in the UK have keyboards made in Germany by onebofvthe Steinway companies. Roland has cutting edge sounds, in the electronic realm, but so does Yamaha, Kord, Nord and others. They go from cheap to uber expensive. Yhe Roland RD2000 and Flagshop Fantom 8 workstation, alongbthe the FP-90/90X have rolands flagship key action, but many prefer the key action in the RD and other digital pianos. Each keyboard from all brands have a mix or features and sound quality for the price, much more affordable now, and unavailable many years ago. The winners arecus, because we have so many choose, and Jeremy presents some so you can decide what fits your needs, wants and budget. The RD 88 is not an RD2000, but it is much more affirdable, compact, light, snd with features snd the Zen Core soundset tecnology the RD2000 does not have. Some people are trained with expensive acoustic pianos. Others not and it doesn't make a difference to them. What does is something they can afford that makes them happy about music. And that is more important that nitpicking and criticizing, as opposed to being objective, like Jeremynpointing out the good and bad about each keyboard he reviews. Which brings me to another point. You can have expensive musical instruments, and cheap ones. Butva great musician csn make evrn the chrapest sound good. Yohan Kim and Masataka Kono proves this, playing the cheap $100 Yamaha PSS-A50, Reface CP, both with 37 mini keys, the Yamaha PSR-E373, Casio CT-S1, and even acoutic pianos, and Yohan Kim plays Kawai grands, and many different Rolands, and Moog synths in credibly. If something makes you happy about music, nothing else matters.

This piano featured is great, but I was just stating my opinion and he knows ecactlybwhy I like the RD 88 as my choice for 88 key digital pianos, because it suits what I need and want. There are better, more expensive keyboards, even Rolands, but I don’t need those, theycare overkill and way more than I need to spend or have time to do so, because as much as I love music, it is not my primary vocation or activity.

This offering is very close to the digital pianos Roland used to build in Italy. The factory is now home of the excellent Dexibell piano company after Roland moved away all production. Dexibell now produces with the same engineers some amazing digital piano's. Having a choice of so many colors is indeed a great idea as these pianos are mostly placed in a living room. Korg could team up with local partners in Europe and USA to provide these extra colors and other finishes.

As you mentioned it has 6 voice samples from German & Italian Pianos, can you please confirm if it has voice sample from Steinways Piano ? In Korg G1 (a bit expensive), it offer 3 piano samples : German, Austrian and Japanese German : Steinway (Bright and powerful tone, balance), Austrian : Bosendorfer (mellow tone, which is my favourite) and Japanese : Yamah (Bright, a lot brighter than steinway and suitable for jazz pieces). Korg C1 ( less expensive than G1) offer german (steinway) and Japan (Yamaha). You can just go with C1 if you like Steinway tone.

Hello Jeremy, Thank you for your great reviews and advice. I'm looking for a piano for my daughter so she can start learning this beautiful instrument. After viewing many of your videos (and others) I was focusing on the Yamaha P45. I don't know why I left Korg apart (probably because of too many information as I don't play piano myself). But when I went to the nearest music store, they presented me the Korg lp 180 (it seems to be currently at a price drop of 659€ in most of the store, I wouldn't be surprised if a new version is announced soon). It looks very nice… It a bit more expensive than the P45 (alone), but if you sum all the things you need to have a complete setup the prices come very close. Many questions rise from this visit to the music store and from your review of the Korg lp 380 (which is above my price but seems to share many characteristics with the lp 180). As far as I understand things, to learn in good conditions, criteria that are the most important are : a full size 88 keys keyboard with good key action, good base sound for piano (no 1000 different sound of poor quality), at least one pedal, headset output, a decent integrated metronome. So here come my questions: How would you rate a "Korg lp 180" (no metronome :/) VS "Korg B2SP" (seems the same as the lp 180) VS "Yamaha P45" (bundled to have a similar setup) VS maybe other references in the same price (thomann has some very appealing products, they are just too many… (I mean thomann own brand)). Thanks in advance for your advice.

@nigo1787 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if this piano is as good as Jeremy is saying (and after all it's quite cheap), but I'm still looking for a pianist running out of a polyphony of 120 notes. That's barely more than a commercial argument to sell more expensive models
@WxkR
@WxkR 2 жыл бұрын
Why would you buy a digital piano to layer sounds? Better go with a workstation. In digital pianos, the polyphony is needed so that notes are not dropped when using the pedal. 120 seems pretty good for such a use. If you want bigger, more acoustic-like resonance, you’d need to pay at least twice this price for a mid or high end Kawaii or a Yamaha, but you would not be using that so much unless you play the 88 kids back and forth frequently. If so, not even a $6,000 Clavinova with 256 voices of polyphony might result satisfactory. Korg put the money where it mattered here. They keyboard action and sound are top notch… I have owned a C1 air (same keyboard action as this one, but some more sophistication regarding the piano sounds) for 4 years and the keyboard is as responsive and noiseless as the first day, again, at the level of Yamahas and Kawaiis costing twice or more. I bought it after a month of research on line and at stores and concluded I was not going to get a better balance of key action, sound, and price. Jeremy is not the sole person recommending it. I found several piano sellers consistently giving it high marks despite that they sell other brands a lot more because of name recognition. Well, good for us! That’s probably a factor for Korg keeping lower prices for its digital pianos.

Hello. I found your video very helpful. I have study classic music as a teenager. Now twenty years later i have time and space to start again. I have been shopping around and demoed kawai kdp 75 and 120 and also the casio px770. I came across the korg which sells for less than the 3 above but is also significantly older. No portability needed. Good looks and sturdyness are appreciated. Most importantly tone and action. What would you suggest me to buy. Thank you

This is truly a work of art indeed! I have a question regarding the CT-X line-up from CASIO Jeremy - How good is there key-bed? ( I have watched your full review of the CT-X5000 where you mentioned the key-bed was nice upon unboxing and testing) but how about after some use? does it make sounds after being used or is that not true? Thanks a lot!
@dougie6897
@dougie6897 Жыл бұрын
The CTX sound chip is really excellent…. But unfortunately the key bed is cheap flimsy and noisy…. If Casio could address this the arranger keyboards would be the market leaders I’m sure.
@Zoco101
@Zoco101 Жыл бұрын
@@dougie6897 Yes, a good arranger with a nicer action than the GHS on Yamaha's DGX-670 - that would be popular. But why don't more manufacturers make 73-key portable pianos for light gigging? Only Yamaha does this with the P-121, and the 121's GHS action could be improved on easily. There is an unfulfilled niche in the market for a highly portable piano (with speakers) and a superior plastic action, priced between 600-900 euros, and preferably with only 73 keys.

Jeremy, it's nice to see another review by you. Your link takes me to European sites (since I'm in Europe) but I don't see this Korg model listed. I'm guessing it's well over US $600 but I think I like the sound of the D1 better. Of course the D1 has to record via lineout. Did you record this new model with a mic or lineout? PS I have the ATH-M30x headphones, but I must say that the bass is very weak. I guess they were designed for studios, which often use very unforgiving monitors with prominent mids. Update: LP-380: I have found a separate link that works in Europe. Seems to be the same model, more or less. "Discounted" to €895.

I use the M50X. Yes studio monitor headphones seek to have as flat a sound as possible to ensure we get a true representation of the mix.

Jeremy is absolutely right about the action. Since my original comment, the price has fallen on this piano, making it even better value for money. It's listed well under €800 by my supplier, and has the best action (RH3) on any digital piano up to that price and maybe up to 1000 euros, with the single exception of the D1, also made by Korg and featuring the same action. (See also the Korg C1Air, which features the RH30 action and costs just a little more. I haven't tried that action.) I prefer Yamaha sounds, but at this pricepoint, a convincing action is a huge advantage. For anybody wondering, the D1 is a budget stage piano, naturally without the speakers and stand that come with home digital pianos. So, there are two (maybe three) inexpensive Korg pianos with superb actions competing with models way above their price. Hats off to Korg!

Great video, thank you Jeremy. :) I currently use the Gear4Music DP-2 and the keys are really easy to press with only a little bit of weight. That causes trouble when I visit my teacher who has an acoustic piano with really heavy keys. I have to adapt to the heaviness of the keys every time and think it would be better to have a similiar piano at home. Can anyone say something about the weight of the keys of the LP380U? :) Are they nearly as weighted as those of acoustic pianos or also still pretty light?

@@cristiangira9987 I guess you've bought it by now. In case you haven't decided: Roland sounds are a little better in my opinion, while the Korg RH3 action is a little better than the PHA4 on the Roland, at least for those players with strong fingers. The FP-30X is a portable piano and is much improved over the FP-30. The volume control is irritating. Roland has inexpensive home pianos too. Look at the RP & F series. It's a shame that Yamaha ditched the Arius YDP-164 home piano. That one was excellent. It's replacement is over-priced IMO. If you see a YDP-164 on sale anywhere, grab it! The same goes for the deleted P-255 (portable) which I have, and love.
@cristiangira9987

@@Zoco101 Thanks for answering. Yeah I did decide to go with Roland FP-30X cause the other one was not in stock. Also I probably would've still stayed with Roland cause of the texture of the keys. I feel like with the keys on Korg RH3, her hand would slip easily cause there's no coating there (cause on my piano, Kawai ES110, she struggles to play fast passages, her hands slipping a lot). The one thing that I was surprised about was how hard you have to press on the keys, but that's not that big of an issue, something that she got used to, but initially she said its way harder to press than her acoustic piano at school).

The P-125 is portable the LP-380U is not, but beyond that, there's no comparison. The LP-380U has a tri-sensor which means it's more accurate during fast repetitions, it has a big 40W soundbar that produces a much more accurate and true to an acoustic piano sound than any portables in priced similarly. If you must have a portable piano, I would recommend something with big upwards facing speakers like the Kawai ES520.
