The Bird could do everything on the court. What I believe places him at the top of the GOAT list was his total commitment to team play. Larry had ZERO ego when it came to making the bucket and used the fear opponents had of his shooting skill to pass the ball. The Bird's ball passing ability was at genius levels, second only to Pistol Pete Maravich. Larry Bird is the GOAT because his skills encompassed every aspect of the game. Magic Johnson was a better basketball athlete, but The Bird was a better all-around player. However, when it came to style NOBODY could touch Magic. He moved like a bouncing & playful panther that just made you feel good. The Bird played the game like a Viking berserker swinging two axes while assaulting a breach. It weren't pretty but damned exciting!

Wunayti, nice videos! I was privileged to see Bird play in the old Boston Garden three times, all in the mid-80's. Bird's prime. It was amazing. I've never seen a more dominant authority on the court, field, whatever...than him. Bird's Hoops IQ and skills are unsurpassed, IMHO. Russell too. Both of them made the most of it. I agree with the video about the Eastern conference in the 80's. The sixers (1st half of the decade) were one tuff team. The Bad Boys (latter half of the decade) were so good, and so deep, they brough guys off the bench all game with no fall off. Those were two of the great team in all time league history. The west had nothing like them. And 'Nique's Hawks and the Bucs were also really tough. Bird had a much more difficult path to the finals than Magic. Then once in the finals, had to deal with Magic and Kareem. One more point...OK, 2 1. Bird played with a bad back the 2nd half of his career. And the last few years, a REALLY bad back. And STILL, he's talked about in GOAT conversations. (I think he IS the GOAT, all-around...Jordan greatest athlete, Russel greatest defender) He played through it like the champion he was. Never complained. 2. The great 80's Celtics had ONE weakness. Just one. They never had a deep bench. (Except in '86) Red swindled other GM's to build that great starting 5. Before long the GM's wouldn't deal with Red anymore. They always had the best (or close to) record, so no high draft picks. Because of this the starting 5 logged HUGE minutes, game after game for years. The '87 Celts were not going to beat the Flakers that year (I lived through that rivalry). (Of course, the '86 Lakers stood Boston up, or it would be 2-2 head to head) They were broken, injured, tired. It took Bird's miraculous steal to beat the Bad Boys. Like the warriors they were, they fought in the finals. But all those minutes caught up to them and by playoff time '87 they were broken down. Also, Len Bias ... 1st round Celts pick after the '86 title (2nd pick overall, Red's last miracle) ... DIED! (2 days after drafted. Look it up) He was hailed as the next Jordan. He was THAT good. That cost the Bird Celtics another title or two. I miss watching Larry Bird play basketball. Miss it a ton. LARRY LARRY LARRY ... the crowd used to chant! Legend!

Thanks for sharing this and giving Bird props about his passing skill. Too many people think of Bird as a shooter only and he had a complete game that was incredible. There are video's that show Bird's skill as a passer and he threw passes between the legs of opposing players and threaded the needle through very tight windows. The "thinking Basketball" analyst had Bird as the second best playmaker of the 80's right behind Magic. I think it is impossible to pick an ultimate "GOAT" because it is a team game and there are too many variables but consider this about Bird = his first 9 years in the MVP voting he was 4th, then 2,2,2,1,1,1, 3 and then 2nd. Also in that 9 year stretch ( before the dual heel surgery and back issues) in games Bird played Boston won 534 games and lost 177 for a win % of 75.1% and this was in the tougher East conference. Bird is the only "goat" candidate to put up a 50-40-90 season ( he did it 2 years in a row = 87 and 88) and in 85 and 86 just missed the 90% FT. So I went back and totaled all 4 years and Bird did average 50-40-90 over those 4 consecutive years. Bird was 3384 of 6534 on FG = 51.79% and for 3 pointers = 325 of 784 = 41.45% and FT was 1670 of 1854 = 90.07% and his per game for these 4 years was 28.1 pts and 9.7 reb and 6.8 assists. I think Bird was the best all around player we have seen!!

Magic has more Championships, but overall, the accolades favor Bird. Rookie of the Year, 3 MVPs in a row, All Star 12 seasons...which means he was an All Star EVERY year he played a full season, plus was on some All Defensive Teams as well (2nd team, if memory serves, 3 years in a row), something Magic never did, despite having the most steals a couple of years. Oh yeah. A Bird was College Player of the year...even though the small ISU squad lost to Magic's Big Major MSU. I think it's hard to compare today's outstanding players to the greats back in the day. The money has changed the culture everywhere, especially on the floor; guys don't feel it's necessary to play a full season, or to go 100 percent every possession. They don't play like winning is all that important. Only a handful of guys dedicate themselves to the game as a craft the way Bird, Magic, Kareem, Jordan, Moses and Irving did; and they did because the loved the game and the competition. And you rarely, if ever, saw them smiling and socializing before and after games. When they stepped on the floor, it was crystal clear they didn't like each other. Some of today's "greats" would seriously struggle if the league let them grapple and fight the way players did in '70s and '80s. Compare the eras, the first thing you see is there's an inherent lack of toughness today - but there's not a lack of money. IMO, only a few guys playing now who in five years will have a chance to be in that GOAT conversation, starting with Steph Curry; that guy has a work ethic that actually might have fit an any era.

It's all subjective, times and generations crave for and seek out heroes! I was too young to really appreciate Bill Russell and growing up "Wilt the Stilt" was the messiah of basketball and then came Dr. J, Larry and Magic THE real golden age of modern basketball, the origin of modern basketball coming out of a time of division and drug abuse that coincided with a division of the leagues and a forced reunification into the present NBA. Out of turmoil and strife came these saviors of the game, Bird and Magic. Bird joined a Celtics organization in 1979 that had a 1978-79 record of 29/53 and in his rookie year 79/80 they won the Atlantic Division with a record of 61/21 and won the NBA championship in his second year, in the 80/81 season, with a record of 62/20. This is only his first two years in the league? This by itself is an argument for GOAT-ness, but Magic was doing the same thing for LA at the time, an argument of GOAT-ness as well. MJ wowed us with things we hadn't seen, "Airness" flash and unabashed ego but is he alone as good as Magic and "Showtime!" or Larry without all the marketing flash of "Showtime" or "I wanna be like Mike"? When Larry was just a blue-collar basketball genius who genuinely was humble and who's only public appearances outside of basketball was that the public or press could go to his home and watch him mow his lawn on a Saturday. I adore Michael, Magic and Bird and I think Michael is the GOAT but if you tell me Bird is then I'd agree without argument, OR Magic! The 3 of them are that far above everyone else even today. Nothing but respect for King James and Kobe is in a place James will never achieve, but it's still those 3 for me! That's subjective, but James announcing after he AND the team brought the Cav's a title, I AM the GOAT immediately and forever removes him from my consideration. That Kobe had too much respect for the great players that came before him to ever say that, makes him number 4 on my list, but a REAL candidate for number 1. These are arguable but there are ONLY 4 and they are Bird, Magic, MJ and Kobe and that's not in order. For me there are 4 GOAT's of the modern game. Today's game is too soft and not even in the league of Bird & Magic's era. I was in Barcelona for the entire Olympic Games and saw all of the Dream Team games and to see Magic and Bird together was sublime, to watch Sir Charles be the scoring leader of that team gave me chills, to witness the revelation that was Tony Kukoc who ushered in international players to the NBA in an unprecedented way, and the rest of the Dream Team playing for fun and as a family, was nothing short of miraculous! I've been trackside at Monaco to see Michael Shumacher win the Grand Prix de Monaco and that is a footnote, no matter how awe inspiring! We live in an age of Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Raphael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Pete Sampras, Lewis Hamilton and TOM BRADY! How lucky we are to have witnessed individual and team greatness on levels that may not be seen again for a very long time?

Bird could have increased his PPG by double, but he fed his teammates when he could, he said: "I would rather have a great team than trying to be a star on my own. About white ballers, Doncic when he's hot, he's great, but he'll never be a Bird. When he said Bird saved the NBA, I think if was Bird and Majic, they came into the league at the same time, both were great marksman, both were out standing passers. The biggest difference between those two, is Magic was more athletic, and was more graceful. That's my 2 cents, MJ, a different kind of player, a lot of flair. Those are my three favorites in the early to mid 1980s. Could not stand Bill Lambeer of Detroit, he was a dirty player. One game the Cletics had easlily won, Lambeer elbowed Bird in the neck and when he tripped Bird, Larry one Punced him, and was out cold.

As great as Magic was Bird individually was better. As mentioned in the video Magic had the luxury of having Kareem on the same team. Was Bird the GOAT? A valid case could certainly be made. But if not he is *ABSOLUTELY* in the Top 3 All-Time and on the All-time starting 5. Period end of story. He owned Jordan and the Bulls in the postseason and went 6-0. It was only after Bird retired in '92 that Jordan and the Bulls went on their dynasty run. Just a phenomenal player who did everything on the court during a much tougher and more physical NBA era..

Speaking of College, Pistol Pete (who you saw in this clip) still to this day he owns the college scoring record. In the early 1970s there wasn't a 3-Point line, Pete averaged 44.2 PPG. His last season he played in Birds Rookie year.

Who is the best is a fools errand. It depends on what you value. Individual skill or team skills. My point IMO reveals Bird as the first pick in my all time team because he makes the entire team better. NBA Champion, MVP + Coach of the year + NBA exec of the year tells me that he understands basketball to a superior level. He also stayed in college after he was drafted to stick with his college team. Dedication and loyalty makes for superior people.

You were doing a great reaction until the very end when you threw the more talented player Larry Bird under the bus in favor of the inferior Magic Johnson. Did you know that Magic Johnsons career points average was only 19.5 to Larry Birds 24.3. Larry took a 29 win team to a 62 win team his rookie year. And Birds IQ and shooting ability was better. HOW DARE YOU PISS OFF BIRD FANS! DONT YOU KNOW THAT WE GIVE MORE LIKES AND VIEWS THAN ANY OTHER FANBASE....GO ASK RED TV, LT, OR THE DUNSON CHANNEL ABOUT THAT!
