I've been in the fashion for, my god, maybe almost 15 years but probably pass that and every 2-5 yrs something always starts the 'lolita is dieing' frenzy but we're still here. Lolita's been lolita since longer than most of us have been alive because it adapted and changed over the years. IMO, it's like goth. It's not going anywhere.

it's pretty sad Victorian Maiden shut down. it one of the first brand of dresses I fell in love with when I first came across lolita. But it's understandable. I'd definitely lean towards prints rather than a plain albeit beautiful period-mimicking dress

As a Lolita since round about 2007, I've heard Lolita fashion is dying so many times I've lost count. I think western goth fashion has died a few dozen times as well (though I guess that lot enjoys the undead so, maybe they like it that way). Our frilly butts have endured through times when you had to either personally know someone in japan to buy things for you, or make your own clothes with very very little in terms of tutorials or resources. We'll keep on floofing through a few brands closing, especially since Taobao "brands" are starting to really up their game and make pretty decent items. I am pretty sad that Tokyo Rebel in NYC is closing its physical store again, but, its not like we really need physical stores in the US for much more than the occasional tourist destination and tea party hosts.

I love this video for a number of reasons. (not masochistic) I just really starting researching and wearling lolita in 2017. I was amazed at how many resources there were online to make me not look like a frick-frack. I wasnt even aware that I would meet some of the most amazing women of my life before falling in love with the fashion. After getting my first dress (axes femme $15 wut) I went to a meet up and met girls who just started wearing lolita and many that were in these comms since 2009. I'm like holy shit thank you based god for making this still a thing when I had no idea how prevalent it was in society still. BTW I have a video of my first meet up at the shedd aquarium on my channel if you want to see that $15 dress and experience what I'm reflecting on. Also I'm tired newbies/non-lolitas thinking the fashion is dying because of some shitty article telling them it's not cool anymore. Like you're new I'm new theres literally 20 girls here who bought their first dress this year how can it be dying if you are literally keeping it alive as we speak. Or if they don't wear lolita I"m like why are you so interested in it if it's "dying". Also love the jokes here and your made up words give me life. I actually hd a lot to say in response to this so I might make my own video to bounce off what you shared here. Glad to see you won the copy write claim. Happy New Years Tyler!

Great video! While I was in Tokyo I saw a fair share of lolitas. That being said, I also saw a slew of cool and creative looks. As you said, American vintage style is huge at the moment - it's really no surprise that people just have a hard time accepting the fact that trends simply change as with media forms.

Thank you so much, both for the kind words and for sharing your personal experience in the country. It's heartening to hear that the doom and gloom articles are certainly padding the reasons to panic from a first hand source. People's resistance to change is, of course, historic; you're right.

I remember when I started high school I used to look up the famous Japanese brand stores online to gaze upon the expensive but pretty dresses, but didn't have any money (or credit card) to purchase them. Fast forward to the end of post-secondary, a little richer though still somewhat broke and can now actually justify purchasing dresses because I can get ones from Taobao that are half the price but still beautiful. I go to anime conventions every once in a while and I've seen more girls wearing lolita every passing year. What I'm saying is that for young women and for ones just starting, it's become more affordable to wear lolita fashion (without making it yourself, etc.) but this affordability is most likely to come outside of those famous brands.

Just because a major shop that used to drive a niche culture closed doesn't mean that the entire culture is dead. same thing happens in technology, a company close or get sold to another one, or physical market places close to be replaced by an online one. The Lolita culture is mostly adaptive one, most would love to go to physical shops and buy stuff from there (some might go and buy let say a dress but then realize they made a mistake a paid more than they thought and whinge about) some can't so they resolve to internet shopping which what I see most business go to these days. congrats on the sponsor you deserve it. and happy new year :)

Karichi Du Soleil I was expecting someone to say that Lolita focuses on quality than quantity so it won’t be a problem (since I saw someone said that in Lolita updates), but I can’t help but to worry if the overwhelming amount of lolita items by Chinese indie brands promotes fast fashion indirectly. I have noticed such phenomenon especially in the Chinese Lolita community, and is getting more vivid like other fast fashion based alternative fashion community in China. Though it can’t be deny that most of the indie items are made in high quality (my lolita items so far are mostly made by Taobao brands lol), they’re too much to handle for the community! For anyone who read this comment, I would like to hear your perspective and opinion on this phenomenon.

the other thing these brands have in common is a hellish lack of sizing. the VM designer came to anime north last year and got a lot of questions about more sizes for people larger than 86cm in the bust. she responded by making a fucking long mumu. VM is known for their A-line, tailored stuff, but it only comes in size VERY TINY. the one crumb they throw bigger people is the exact opposite of the stuff people actually did want to buy from them. that with their terrible distribution... I don't really feel that bad about VM closing.
@redonyx54287 жыл бұрын
God, I remember that. While I did love VM's designs they're very limited. Like they hit a rut and didn't want to come out of it.
@naurrr7 жыл бұрын
if you're not going to sell your stuff to people who desperately want to wear it, you won't make enough money to survive. brands and designers need to listen to their fans and to potential customers and cater to them. VM only catered to one type of fan and assumed that they could do that indefinitely.

Happy new year, Tyler ^^ I actually get a little upset when I hear people who are new to lolita say that they entered a dying fashion, especially in the state I live in (Northrhine-Westphalia). I'm located pretty much right next to Düsseldorf, which is like germany's Akihabara and Harajuku merged together into one huge street within walking distance of the main station. Therefore our Comm is quite active there. Sadly K-Pop mostly took over the shelves of J-Rock in stores but there are actually some shops who actively REFUSE to play K-Pop out of one sole reason: The (obnoxious) fans. And honestly, I prefer a nice piano piece over a plastic hip hop beat to my tea, wether traditional or with boba ^^ Ok I got way off track o.o What I'm trying to say is: Not only Harajuku is changing, but that does not mean the OG's are gone!

from what i’ve seen, a lot of taobao brands are more successful than ever due to new publicity, and new releases from ap and btssb sell out as quickly as they ever have. what makes lolita cool is how timeless it is - it’s so separate from other fashion trends and time periods that it seems like something people appreciate no matter what year it is because it’s just so essentially princessy and feminine. it’s basically the dream for anyone who grew up wearing disney princess costumes every halloween and i think that’s a consumer base that never really shrinks.

Do the Japanese youth still hang out at Omotesando Bridge? ( Cosplaying Visual Kei artists - and dressing in Lolita ). I know they used to dress up and hang out every Sunday. : ( ! It’s that I’m writing a report- but I’ve not followed up with the scene in a very long time. Perhaps over a decade- ? It’s not dying. Not long ago I went to Harajuku several times- especially on the Sundays. I found at least two people dressed in Decora, and one Dressed in the Ouji style in Ikebukuro. It could be because it was during the summer- and the heat there is insane 😶

But MM is also so way out of my budget, even secondhand...and yet I LOVE their look! So...not a lolita here, but certainly an admirer of..erm.."word salad". I stumbled upon this site a couple of days ago (it was in my recommendations, because...?) and I am currently sort of binge-watching it, mostly because I have a rather impressive amount of spare brain cells swirling around aimlessly within the confinement of my cranial cavity, like so many flouncy petticoats caught in a not-so gentle breeze... Okay, I'll admit, I have also been gazing at Lolita fashion for a while now, as I find it quite beautiful and imaginative. One does not have to be an adherent to a particular aesthetic, in order to admire it. My two-cents worth of observation (now that I'm actually getting to it ) on whether Lolita fashion is dying, is this: I cannot imagine that all the Lolitas themselves, who have invested such a tremendous, colossal, hell, *epic* amount of time and money in their wardrobe would ever allow such a demise to actually happen, beyond the occasional bout of -as you stated in the video - apparently *cyclical* conjecture, resulting in a communal "clutch your pearls and grab the smelling salts" collapse upon respective fainting couches.

Well executed. I do like the non print stuff and out of the prints it’s the steampunk looking stuff I like the best... don’t like the cute stuff or the thousands of dogs, cats and bunnies. Even the dead bunnies are too cute for me to wear... oh frack lets just put studs and leather on everything - bahahahaa

Hey you got your tiny animals inside tiny apples jsk( o 7o )b ! My opinion is the same as yours, lolita fashion is just not a harajuku style anymore, it's something bigger! There are more people wearing it than ever and more to come

For a spanish native speaker is hard to follow you but i can still understand most of it XD So it's an extremely common thing that when something goes wrong in a community, they will start thinking that is dying and that the black death will come up for them or for certain business, etc, etc. Still they always are exagerating most of the time

Hate being that person, but Hong Kong is considered as separate from China because it used to be a British territory, but was “given” back to China. They still consider themselves as separate though.
