The Chinese association and media have been pressuring him to retire for years. He's got eager to improve and play, but he doesn't have a say in the ticket of international events. That's how the system works. They avoid mentioning the word Goat in official media assets to discredit his achievements most of the times.

Thanks so much for this video! Really appreciate it. I’ve been following Ma Long’s interviews closely, and it’s true - he never brings up retirement himself; it’s always the media asking him. In an interview during China Smash, he said he doesn’t feel that old and, since he loves table tennis so much and still has expectations for himself, he would like to discover how much potential he has left in the time he’s got. He also mentioned that while some people focus too much on an athlete’s age, what actually matters is their performance/ability. Honestly, to me, this doesn’t sound like someone who’s ready to retire (which also lines up with the intel you got about him still having a big desire to play). I just don’t get why the media keeps pushing this topic (even that post-match interview after the finals felt misleading). Like, can you believe he got asked about retirement almost every single day during China Smash? Anyway, I just hope Ma Long keeps playing for as long as he wants and that any decision to retire is entirely his own - without pressure from the association or the media. Thanks again for the great content!

It is undeniable that Ma Long is a legend, and even if he wanted to, I don't think he could retire right now. Today, despite the fact that the Chinese national team has many talented players, none come close to having the abilities of the dragon.

In reality, the Chinese Table Tennis Association is highly political, with officials and coaches responsible for developing younger players. Resources are often shifted toward them, so Ma Long hasn’t been treated well by the national team for several years. Despite believing he still has potential, he’s not optimistic about getting chances to play internationally in this cycle.

Yes, Ma Long's days are definitely numbered as an international touring player. But everyone should understand his role in the team has changed since he won his second Olympic gold medal in singles. His role has been helping the younger players grow and become his future replacements, instead of winning the tourneys himself. The Chinese have very different ideas on individual players from many other countries. The nation's interests always take precedence over those of individuals and table tennis is no exception.

1:07 If you know it, it doesn’t mean you can do it. Or else Ma Longs coach would be the best, wouldn’t he? The coach knows what to do and the player does it. I think the main reason why he is so good, is his consistency and how he can adapt quickly to the other player. He also gives 200 percent in every training every second while world class players like Fan Zhendong maybe “just” give 90 percent. He is the most hardworking player and THATS why he is the GOAT

Being a stepping stone for younger generations is a martial arts mentality but in sport when you are not giving your best, you fool the audience and pity the opponent. Not to mention betting people.
