Well, it all depends on the time frame observed. Looking at the Maddison Project DB one sees that Malaysia's GDP per capita was 1.9 times that of Thailand in 1950. Now it's only 1.6 times higher (bevor the pandemic it was slightly less). So Thailand's economy grew faster on a per capita basis in the last 74 years. It's more informative to look at GDP per capita growth instead of GDP growth because Malaysia's population has been growing faster than Thailand's since at least the 1970s.

The higher the PPP is compared to the country's nominal GDP per capita, the lower the value of the country's currency, so it means that the imported goods are bought at a high price, and the people's basic living expenses are high, so the savings are low. It's not good. The smaller the gap between GDP and PPP per capita, the more stable developed and powerful it is. What does it do compared to Japan, which has no economic growth in the past 30 years? Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines have had full potential for the past 70 years and will become developed countries in the future, but they are still countries with only full potential. The economic growth of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines over the past 70 years is exactly in line with the global inflation graph. In other words, it is safe to say that these countries have virtually little development, and they have been trapped in the "Middle income trap" for the past 30 years.

Malaysia faces an escalating brain drain, with 1.86 million Malaysians working abroad in 2022, including 1.13 million in Singapore. Former Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar reported that Malaysia's emigration rate of 5.5% significantly exceeds the global average of 3.3%. Data shows that 40% of Malaysians in Singapore occupy high-skill positions, with nearly half indicating no intention to return within six years. Singapore's higher wages, alongside cultural and geographical proximity, drive this migration. Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Zafrul Aziz acknowledges the talent shortage but primarily attributes it to wage disagreements. While initiatives like the IC Design Park in Selangor offer starting salaries of US$1,100 to US$1,560, these figures are dwarfed by Singapore's IT graduate salaries exceeding US$3,770. Beyond Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong have become significant destinations for Malaysian talent. As of late 2023, Malaysians constituted 16.5% of foreign professionals in Taiwan, with many choosing to remain after graduation. Hong Kong, addressing its own talent gaps, has increased recruitment from Southeast Asia, capitalizing on Malaysians' English and Cantonese language skills.

Malaysia is rich, but not successful. Ditto for Brunei. Singapore is rich and successful although I personally found it a notch stifling. Give me the freedoms I enjoy in Australia or the US. And Malaysia will never catch Japan - growth numbers can be shown by several factors but that doesn’t equate to a high quality of life. For instance, the average non-Muslim non-Malay Malaysian faces discrimination, pressure to convert and can be pushed around by government agencies. Malaysia is also a sex trafficking hub and corruption infects all levels of government - it is as corrupt as Canada or Australia. Most people don’t see these countries as corrupt but when you’ve seen it from the inside, you can’t be fooled.

** before any msians try to come in spread nonsense ** the answer is unfortunately no. Within the past 5 months alone - if you watch Msian posted youtube videos it is about news of malls and shopping centers closing down. Msia is not doing well. They don't have the same attraction as Singapore and Thailand (which is very FAST becoming the TOP investment spot in ASIA. soon will be second to Singapore.) Next is Indonesia because of competitive pricing - Indo will be a very BIG contender.

You need to look at the bigger picture man..retail is doing bad because digitalization. It’s not only Malaysia’s retail that is doing bad, you should go look up some videos about China shopping mall/retail 😅

Japan is a dying country, everyone knows that. Comparing yourself to another who is on drip in the ICU is very sad. Malaysia has alot of rich natural resources especially in Sabah which actually belongs to the philippines sultanate but captured under the Malaysian federation. Brunei has much natural resources too. But unlike Malaysia which is swarmed with corrupted indigenous people, the Bruneian king is much more savvy and people centric. Is Malaysia rich? Yes, is she inferior compared to the other asian countries? Yes. Will she continue to grow? Absolutely not. Why? Because the indigenous population is expanding, and with it greater corruption and chaos.
