Brilliant essay - well argued and well explained. And yeah - I'm 100% with you. 90% of the time (there are exceptions) when someone complains woke (or opposite) politics are ruining something, it's because the writer has done a crappy job explaining themselves or putting anything else of interesting note in the story. That combined with the inconsistencies driving people up the wall - when you get attached to a character but they change to 'adjust to' the new writers personal sensibilities you notice more and get more irate about it. New characters - not so much - their either get welcomed into the pantheon or slowly forgotten about. But then news sites feed off the outrage and the cycle continues... meh

I think I have to start actively combating these points. It is less profitable but holy fuck does it annoy me whenever someone brings up "woke" as a reason for anything. I just shake my head in disbelief. I never thought I would be an unironic centrist but seems like I am turning into one.

Anyways in my opinion, comics were eventually going to reach the state of stagnate and then fall in popularity but this current climate of Covid and this political virtue-signalling/propaganda stuff (and already on-going issues that plagued comic industry) just accelerated their fall.
@CarlolucaS3 жыл бұрын
@@nnnnmhughuuhhjiijj9457 Let's say we remove the whole woke stuff, right? You wuold still need to deal with how comics don't start at issue 1 and end at issue x. It is the same old big 5 to 10 superheroes that get written and rewritten over and over again. Comics don't have a standard size. Comics are more expensive. Comics... you get the point. I thought I explained my point pretty clearly in the video but maybe I should have explained it better. Politics in itself is not the problem is is the writing and the writing only. I want to make this as clear as possible because I am 100% convinced you would read a woke comic if it was written well. Could you give me a time-stamp in the video where I was unclear. Manga has an easy to follow chronology and is much cheaper while most mainstream comics have a bajillion timelines and you don’t know what to choose. Yeah, you can pick whatever comic you like, but personally I prefer some standalone storylines like All Star Superman or Kick Ass which are far better than what we have now. Plus you have throw lots of money to have the whole collection of a certain run. I seriously considered buying a Constantine collection but then I realised there were like 20 volumes and the store offered them in a weird order, like they had 1,2 and then 15. Each volume was like 20 bucks, so it’s not really worth it tbf. Also, certain comic series are very hard to find in physical form these days and one volume’s usually a three figure offer, unfortunately.

Yeah, there are certainly a lot of reasons why Comics are behind. Don't get me wrong Comics are still huge but the competition is slowly creeping in. I made this video mainly because there is so much grifting that goes unchecked. I hope at least I can provide a more nuanced perspective.

The solution would be to approach the making of comics differently. Instead of having an editorial team, the big 2 would need to start searching for new talents and promote them via a Shonen jump equivalent. They would probably need to eat up some losses but comics do that anyway when they try to push characters that are not as popular. Also have more comics that are not about superheroes would be probably a good idea.

I couldn’t agree more with you on the points you make in the video, I think I’ve learn more about the industry of manga and cómics, and i just wanna make a conclusion about why the western comics are failing, I think that it’s just because the big two (DC and Marvel) aren’t doing something NEW, they are just using the same characters over and over again and doing the same plot over and over again, they don’t take any risks at making new characters and they are just doing SUPERHEROS
@CarlolucaS3 жыл бұрын
One thing I forgot to mention though is that those stories can make a lot of money but in movies. So there is an adjacent medium that makes money that is propping up the industry but there is barely any connection between movies/tv-series and comics. I think there are way too many creators riding this wave of "Politics ruing the industry" meanwhile just forgetting all the other shiz that makes the comic book industry stagnant. If I can open at least a few eyes. That's enough for me. Also what do you think about the whole "Sub to me or I'll punch you?" Still trying to figure out if it interesting or not.

I have to be honest with you. I agree with almost everything you said. BUT you missed one critical point. WSJ for example doesn't do these popularity polls just for fun. They basically ask their readers what they want to be published in WSJ. In marketing this is called a pull strategy where western comics use the push strategy. They just publish stuff and hope that the readers will like it. Do you really (I mean like really) think that the readers of western comics want their beloved characters they have been following for years or even decades get completely turned upside down for the sake of "diversity"? Again, I don't disagree with most of your points but I do think western comics are publishing stuff their readers don't want and that is also a part of the problem. Just a point to think about ;)
@CarlolucaS3 жыл бұрын
I kinda agree but like I mentioned in the video it is not the wokeness in itself that is making the industry fail. It is more this constant drive to appeal to everyone. Again the amount of woke comics is very low when you look at all DC and Marvel publications combined. While politics is not completely unimportant it is probably the smallest part of the problem. Btw thx for being so straightforward and feel free to make your content on it. I would like to have alternative views that go beyond the reactionary: "Politics bad" that don't necessarily align with my views.
@joebro1863 жыл бұрын
@@CarlolucaS We are kind of on the same page, I guess. I totally agree that the whole wokeness in itself is not the reason why the industry is failing. You mentioned several points of that in the video. But I do think it is making the whole situation worse. For example Superman: The publisher anounces on "coming out day" that the son uf Clark is now gay (which means the publishers are using politics for marketing). And instead of actually saving the planet he goes demonstrating on the streets against climate change. Superman has the highest comic sales in the world (will be surpassed by One Piece soon though). It's delusional to think that this isn't hurting the industry. I think you mentioned this in your video. In Manga you just have something for everyone and that is what makes it so much more popular. From adventure to fantasy and back to horror and psychological drama to slice of life and romance everyone gets what they like. Btw. I really enjoyed your video and I think you said some really intersting points. Thank you for your insight and keep the good work ;)

@@CarlolucaS I don’t know. People buy controversial stuff more especially when it banned. What sells comics in my opinion is great stories, awesome action and great characters. When I was learning about script writing I was taught that you have to know your audience and cater to that audience. Learn what fans want and give it to then. Modern comics doesn’t seem to be doing that. I have hundreds of comics and I mainly focus on the classics
@CarlolucaS3 жыл бұрын
@@resistancepublishing Yes, thank you for being so honest. So we are not talking about politics we are talking about great stories, awesome action, and great characters. A story can either be woke or racist and it doesn't matter as long as the story is good. Politics is not part of the equation. That was my point. It doesn't matter how political a book is as long as it is written well. I really don't understand how you can go through my whole video agree with everything but the moment I explain, hopefully, pretty well, that politics is not part of the problem you go: "No wrong" I would really like to understand that. Was it maybe the words I chose or how I phrased things? It might be my mistake on how I expressed things.
@resistancepublishing3 жыл бұрын
@@CarlolucaS yes it was in the phrasing of what you stated about politics in comics. Yes there has been politics in comics in the past and those comics sold millions BUT the key to those million dollar stories were that the politics DID NOT overshadow the human struggles and interpersonal relationships between characters in the stories. Just like writing about music for example, in comics. Writing the comic completely about music wouldn’t work. How does music affect people, how does musicians interact with others in relationships, does drugs play apart in the creation of the music? Hopefully you get my point. Switch the word music with the word politics and answer those questions in a story and fans will buy because they are attracted to the human story and internal/external struggles that every human being on this planet goes through. Politics by itself makes for a very boring story and who wants to read that in a 24 page comic where times and page space is important.
@CarlolucaS3 жыл бұрын
@@resistancepublishing Okay, great. In the video, I specifically say that it is all about the story itself and that it has to be well written. Should I leave the term politics out of it? And a follow-up question Why doesn't the same count for the opposition? Why can someone say "Politics is ruining Comics" and get basically no pushback? I really want to understand that. Also, most of the 24 pages in comics are not political and most books are also not political. You can do your own research but as far as I could see politics is one of the smallest parts of comics. Also again. Seems like we are talking about the quality of the story and not politics itself. The quality of the book is important and not politics itself.
