I've been seeing many comments stating "I don't think its a sport, because it doesn't have a specific scoring system". I've replied to too many so I'll just put this here Things we are judged on: - Marching in time - Playing in time - Marching while playing (points added for amount) - Choreography (points added for amount) - Playing at correct level of sound (points added) - Horn angles - Posture - Marching style consistency (ours is heel-roll) - Playing together
@icyyou98397 жыл бұрын
akira people mean there isn't a POINT system. There's a judging system, which isn't the same. A point system is direct, and unbiased when it comes to opinion. In basketball, people don't judge if it's a 2 or a 3 pointer. It either is or it isn't. In marching band, you don't have a definite score. You have a score based on what other people think of you and your team.

Personally I do (Especially as a tuba player who marched a pretty taxing show from a movement perspective and this is totally just shameless bragging but whatever, right?), but you're right. In the end, if it's something you're passionate about and love doing, it doesn't really matter whether others think it is or isn't. I like people to consider it one, but if they don't, that won't make me love what I do any less.

Personally I consider marching band a sport, but ik that lots of people don't feel the same. With the definition you used I find it to perfectly tie in with marching band. At this point I find the easiest point out that if you consider people like ice dancers athletes, then shouldn't other performers going through physical conditioning be considered athletes too? Me having done football my freshman and sophmore, and Drumline my Junior year and plan on continuing into my senior year, and also being part of HBCU style marching band. From my experience, football was way more difficult when it came to physically exert yourself. I am not saying Marching Band was not hard. Memorizing music, remembering sets, *CRABBING AT 180 - 200 BPM* because of newer fresh drum majors, is really hard. Then in the high step marching a simpler but longer show still took much out of me. I do agree marching band is physically demanding, and difficult, I do agree marching band is often overlooked as a sport, by many people. What really urks me though is that, in many of the marching band students in my band, will claim it is more demanding, or harder than other sports, yes memorizing, and marching at different speeds is tough, it is hard, i get it, i have experienced the same as you have(Bass Drum, and Tenor Player) but things with football, you get hit harder than you will ever get hit, you run up and down the field, only to get stopped right before the great feeling of a touch down, you may not be memorizing music, and sets, but you are memorizing game changing plays, that could win the game. Practices may be shorter, but a hot practice in pads will make it feel ten times hotter(but i guessed that helped me, getting used to sweating with the drum on, because even though the harness is different than pads, you are still sweating like a bitch) and I could continue. But at the end of the day, I am trying to say, though I would say marching band could be a sport, I just get bugged with the people at my school, remember *PEOPLE AT MY SCHOOL, NOT THE GUY WHO MADE THE VIDEO, I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT HIM* just go out and say "Marching band is far harder, than(insert sport here)," Well I hope you get what I am trying to say. *(I WONDER WHO WILL ACTUALLY READ ALL OF THIS)*
@Tingling106 жыл бұрын
Pine To The Cone I get marching Band might not be a sport now, but DCI and color guard definitely should be a sport. DCI is like Marching band, but harder. A lot harder musics to memorize and huge amount of endurance, plus 12 hours of practice almost everyday.

At my school, I use the argument that you can "letter" in marching band so technically it is considered a sport, also there are lots of people who have never tried marching band and I feel that at my school, marching band earns way more trophies in a year than any of the other sports have won in multiple years.
@YtJCon8 жыл бұрын
At our school the letter jacked is a different color for marching band than it is for actual sports because they realize marching band isn't on the same level as any other sport. Band kids just petitioned for it so they had to let the kids letter. Marching band is in no way, shape, or form a sport. Sorry if I hurt your feelings but it's the truth. Also please don't use the argument that "try carrying a tuba across a field". That literally means nothing, I agree the tuba might be heavy but just because the equipment is heavy doesn't make it a sport. Like if all football was just walking around in pads. It wouldn't be a sport just because the pads can weigh down on you.....anyway good luck with marching band. Sorry if I come off as mean I'm not trying to be. Good luck and we all have our opinions.
@holamellamonunyabusiness97047 жыл бұрын
JCon Im just saying that at least in my school I know that our tubas had to jazz run and we do a lot of dance and visuals and as a guard member I think that if cheer and dance are now considered a sport marching band should be too. Also, we don't walk we march, and yes, there is a huge difference.

You have inspired me to think about going to the Cadets 2 camp. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
@419waywardkid56 жыл бұрын
If you don’t think it takes effort, you don’t understand how hard it is to march with perfect posture while staying in time and playing memorized music while remembering your movements at the same time If you don’t think there physical exertion you’ve never held a percussion instrument, or sousaphone, or a marching baritone/euphonium, or ran the same show over and over for hours at rehearsal, or seen color guard, or marched in general tbh. And you’ve especially never seen DCI or an angry band director during band camp who likes to make you stand at attention for 12 years. If you don’t think there’s contact you’ve never seen a judge fall victim to bring trampled by the band, or stood close to color guard while it was windy ;) If you think it’s not competitive in any way then... look it up damn If you decide to make your own definition for a sport then you can say it’s not, but if not there’s no reason marching band can’t be a sport. If bowling is a damn sport then so is band 😂

Last year, I wrote a 10-page paper supporting the argument that the marching arts are real sports for my Social and Cultural History of Sports. When I pitched the idea to my professor, he turned it into a class discussion. I mostly referenced drum corps after marching two years with 7th Regiment, but I was able to support other points with facts and data. Got an A.

I understand how lots of people wouldn't think so cause they haven't even tried it, my marching band this year have very fast tempos and slow tempos. So Yes, this is a sport. It requires a physical, you have to have the strength to control what you legs do, not only do you have to marching a certain beat but you also have to memorize music so it's very difficult as well. If you don't agree, then you try it THEN tell me it's not a sport. Honestly it's your opinion though but I gotta tell you, opinions aren't facts so that doesn'tran you're right :)

Yes. you can have a good band and a bad man. You can have a good football team and a bad football team. All teams and groups in all sports are at different levels. You can have a soccer team that does nothing but hang out and barely practice, but the sport itself at a professional level is outstanding. You can have a band that goes all out all the time. Or drum corps. And that activity at a professional level is also outstanding. regular people know about the NFL, or the MLB, or the NBA, or FIFA, but not DCI or DCA. They're not advertised or televised like other sports.

But it is definitely a sport.

I wouldn't care about if marching band were considered a sport at all, EXCEPT It matters to me because I'm in high school, and marching band is an enormous commitment. It doesn't count as a "sport" and I don't have the time for sports. Anything I'm interested falls in either the autumn or the spring, and I can't do anything in the spring, or I'll get sick from my pollen allergies. I don't want the fact that I can't/won't do a sport because I don't want to, to impact my chances of getting anywhere I want to. A friend of mine got refused from MIT because he didn't have a sport. I don't want something like that to stop me or anyone else, but I don't want to give marching band up, I'd rather die :P So that's why I think a lot of people argue about marching band being a sport. Otherwise, I couldn't care less about it being a sport because it's awesome, and being called a marching artist sounds pretty badass.

A couple of years ago, I boldly advocated for a top Corps in that I felt they deserved to be treated as athletes and should follow an athletes diet. The rigors that all Corps members go through in preparation, and during the competition season certainly makes them elite athletes. Throw in less than desirable sleeping and resting accommodations such as riding on a bus from venue to venue, and all of the other nuances that makes up the Drum Corps Season, I am in awe of all individuals that endure a Drum Corps Season!!! The best part is,,,,Corps members do not see it as enduring it!!!.

I personally believe a sport is something that has an objective winner: that means no judges or opinions involved. So under my own personal definition, the marching art's aren't a sport. But I do believe that it's a very athletic activity nonetheless. This is why DCI describes itself as an "activity".

This has always been my standpoint. A sport has a specific method of scoring, like touchdowns, a triple bogey, or a home run. The marching arts are subjective to the reception of the judge and crowd! Nonetheless, all sports and athletic activities take lots of skill, and we should just appreciate talent when we see it rather than judging everyone for it.
@vidalrodriguez20019 жыл бұрын
I could definitely disagree with the whole "subjectivity" part of why some people don't call marching arts a sport. Gymnastics, as a whole, have panels of judges in every event. People aren't debating if gymnastics are a sport (hopefully) as they are one of the (28, I think) sports in the Olympic program. Definitely takes a ton of physical exertion(yes, I know that is subjective, but still), it takes a lot of time and effort to perfect the craft and compete at the world stage(same with drum corps). It's pretty much comes down to that a lot of people just don't know what it takes to compete at that high level in the marching arts and people don't consider that because it isn't that well known, and that's a darn shame.
@nathanweisser9 жыл бұрын
+Vidal Rodriguez That's a fantastic argument... if I considered gymnastics a sport, rather than an extremely highly athletic activity. And the Olympics has ball dancing lol. If its in the Olympics, I don't think that automatically qualifies it as a sport. A more productive debate to have: should the marching arts be in the Olympics? :0
@vidalrodriguez20019 жыл бұрын
+Nathan Weisser Well that's where the other part of my "marching arts not being as well known as other activites" comes into that, because there are certain requirements in becoming an Olympic sport in the scope of how global that activity is. Even some very global sports like baseball and cricket aren't even in the Olympics, because there's only so much you can do in one month, considering how long those games take. That doesn't negate those sports from being sports, they're just not as fully global and widespread as some of the many major ones.
@vidalrodriguez20019 жыл бұрын
+Nathan Weisser The first step in doing so, which in my opinion would be the hardest thing DCI would have to do would be to diversify; especially in the regard that Drum Corps match on an AMERICAN football field. American football has nowhere near the reach that Olympic sports have globally, so that would be the first barrier the marching arts have in expanding their global reach, as this activity is uniquely American. If they in the future get the activity up to the Olympic requirements, some how, it would be in a group also in consideration trying to get into a pretty rigid Olympic program. They would also more than likely be viewed as contreversial/maybe revolutionary in their bid to become an Olympic sport. The IOC committee in charge would probably turn that bid down

Marching band is definitely a sport. Ive been in marching band for 3 years and it is lots of hard work. It involves the correct technique while playing the right notes and having it memorized. Also u go to band camp for 3 days and then play in parades and compete against other marching bands. So yes it is definitely a sport.

Marching band is a sport we might not be running or hitting people but look at how much time and effort goes into learning the drills and memorizing the songs and even playing on the field especially if your uniforms make you sweat in 50 degree weather

Lol, our school board offered to classify marching band as a sport but the directors said no because sports have legal limits of practice time, but as a club they can make us practice almost twice as much XD

We were running through our opener for the first eight sets and one of our color guard members hit under my saxophone when I was playing it and made my lip bleed, and one of the other saxophones got hit in the head with a flag not once, but twice! Oh, the things we do for band XD

The thing about marching band is we work for months perfecting a show that lasts 8 and a half minutes each performance is a big deal if someone has a bad 20 seconds the whole band could be thrown off if someone gets confused on the next move you can't just call a time out and get clarification the band gets 8 or 9 minutes to showcase what we have been working on for hundreds of hours we don't get 4 quarters 9 innings or 2 halves we have minutes if you fall and get hurt you can't stop and put in a replacement you get up and keep going and talk about physically taxing the band does so much work it may look like we are just walking and playing but it is really so much more at my school the band does more work than the football team (and other "real sports")

I remember that we had to roll a prop that almost took half the band to put it on the field, if you were the one going backwards your legs would feel like jelly 😤

1. You have to March, 2. You have to play your instrument, 3. You have to remember every note you play which is hard enough to do with sheet music.

COME HERE WOLFY WOLF! Or on the opposite side when you have to hold a METAL OBJECT TO YOUR FACE IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES. And just to add to it get rid of the vibrato your shivering causes because your uniforms are too small to fit warmer clothes underneath.
