Having just spent two weeks in Thailand I found that the Cannabis was overpriced. But a very good quality. I use it for medicinal reasons as I have quite bad arthritis and some back issues and it does help. I don't see it in a negative connotation at all. I would rather they ban alcohol, as we all know it's a much worse substance to use than weed. Or tobacco. But whether they ban it or not I'm still coming back. I love Thailand.

Another great and informative video! On my last visit to Thailand, I was very surprised to see so many cannabis shops, like Starbucks in Seattle! But the information you gave about not pushing the legal envelope is absolutely true; the Thai laws are not to be taken lightly. Enjoy the beautiful culture to the limit, but be a good guest.

As usual, another great video. Like many, I was shocked when the weed was decriminalization and not surprised when new laws were being considered to restrict its use. I would rather see people enjoying a blunt than getting plastered and aggressive on booze. Regardless, knowing the "rules" in any country is key to staying out of the slammer and being a good person

Wow, a surprising number of shops compared to California! It's interesting that cannabis is available for both medicinal and recreational use in Thialand first, while in the US it became legal for medicinal use first and only later opened up for recreational use. I've noticed that cannabis prices were lower when it was only available for medicinal use in the US. However, now that it is also available recreationally, the prices have increased.

So if the laws pass in march or april how long will shops and users be given to adjust? If a shop doesn't have a doctor in store how would one find a clinic to get a prescription?
@RetiredGlobalLife

I can't but there are so many stores I'm sure the legislature will make it reasonable. And the stores are on alert of the new law coming. And I'm sure there will be no problem in ease in getting a prescription.

You didn't mention if thai citizens would be able to grow plants on their properties or not.
@RetiredGlobalLife
@RetiredGlobalLife 6 ай бұрын
All the talk seems to be over commercial growing. So it is just a guess on my part, but since the government literally gave out one million plants when the law changed. So I could see home growing left alone if used for medicinally, although how would one know how it is used. But again, I think they are worried more about public perception and reputation, so let's see if they care about home plants.

I don't smoke, whether tobacco or weed, but the fact is when in France, in many places, I can't help but being a victim of tobacco passive smoking (though it's getting better), and when I was in Thailand last year, I became victim of weed passive smoking. In both cases, I hated that... Some say there is no reason to ban cannabis, because it is no more harmful than tobacco. Maybe, even if road mortality statistics in France increasingly incriminate the use of marijuana, almost as much as alcohol. What I think is that, if done by reasonable people, smoking tobacco or weed, and drinking alcohol are fine to do, as long as they remain private and unharmful to others. But I'm afraid the new reputation of Thailand being a paradise for cannabis users is attracting a lot of people who we can clearly say have no desire at all to remain reasonable! Well, I guess I'm just a grumpy old fart 😂
@RetiredGlobalLife
@RetiredGlobalLife 6 ай бұрын
You are right, and not that you are a grumpy old fart. First, the cigarette smoke. I used to live in France and it seemed everyone smoked. Very annoying. And back then they smoked in restaurants as well. And there is a group of people that will be mainly attracted to a place because of the MJ, and they are not the kind of people who are really contributing to a country, or respecting it. I do think the pain relieving properties of cannabis are real, and via non-smoking consumption, is quite valuable. I know of many people who can't tolerate the typical pain drugs and are too harmful for their bodies, but cannabis seems to help them, particularly people fighting cancer and dealing with the drugs and their effects. So there is a value there.

I think it's very unfortunate that this drug, which essentially is "mind altering" and a stepping stone to harder drugs, was allowed to proliferate in Thailand . The health benefits it's supposed to provide is not curative as it treats symptoms. On the other hand because it's mainly administered by smoking it's very harmful to your lungs, similarly to nicotine.. This drug was widely used and became habit-forming by American soldiers in the Vietnam war to cope with the combat stresses which were quite unique fighting a guerilla enemy plus a tropical environment. The ailments you mention in the video can be treated by a variety of other remedies without inhaling a substance damaging your lungs PLUS affecting the chemistry of your brain , another essential organ . I could go on a dissertation about the Ying and Yang of the health aspects but this forum is not the proper place for it . On the other aspects of your presentation regarding tourism , well, it's questionable that a big enough sector of pot users should be targeted to visit Thailand for this specific reason . Just like sex tourism, which is based on prostitution illegal in Thailand. Thailand has a big problem with drugs,like yaa baa,glue sniffing, magic mushrooms,etc and now they added potsmoking. Drug addiction is a scourge in society , you get hooked incrementally, cannabis is the entry point to go on a trip then when you want an even more heightened trip you can graduate to cocaine,etc which is widely used in the US . You mentioned the Thai government getting tax revenue and employment opportunities . Don't get me started on that, 6500 shops paying the prescribed taxes would put them out of business . Tax collection of shops in Thailand is by negotiation . I got the inside info on that from a tax inspector in the Revenue Department . The way law making is in this country is on an ad hoc basis . Hit and miss. A lot of it is about vested interests. That's another can of worms not a good idea to lift a lid on by expats . You and Joy are a lovely couple, you have a beautiful daughter who is smart and successful in business in Thailand . Luckily you don't need resorting to mind altering substances. You got all the blessings you need .
@RetiredGlobalLife

Thanks for all the effort in your comment. Always thoughful and reasoned. Many strong feelings on both sides of the issue. On the personal side, neither Joy nor I are into smoking MJ. My CMU doctor prescribed me an herbal capsule which included CBD (the part of MJ that does not produce a high, as you know) for sleep issues and I found it helpful. There are many ways to use CBD without smoking, which I agree is terrible in all forms, vaping or whatever. It is a fascinating legal, social and financial issue for Thailand, however, and that is my interest. It sounds like you know much more than me on the nitty gritty of issues like tax collection, etc.
@consulthai
@consulthai 6 ай бұрын
@@RetiredGlobalLife of course I wasn't inferring that either Joy or you were smoking pot and therefore biased. I think if your doctor prescribed CBD inclusive pills and they were produced under controlled processes they wouldn't damage your lungs . In Australia to get something similar you have to see a medical specialist and ask for a prescription. You have to go through very detailed scrutiny to qualify . Usually requested for acute back pain or similar . Insomnia may not qualify . In Thailand medications are not that strictly controlled. You can buy antibiotics without prescriptions in pharmacies as well as antidepressants and anti anxiety drugs. Which are addictive . The 6500 shops selling cannabis in many forms are never going to be properly controlled whatever legislation they come up with . And that will cause problems I mentioned in my previous post . If CBD pills were a controlled substance like cortizone or codeine only available by prescription I wouldn't object . This is on the medical side . But reputation wise Thailand's image as a haven for cannabis is very bad and similar as a sex destination. Sex abounds in all its computations for sale while prostitution is illegal . Go figure . Why not make that legal and regulate it? You know why and again ,vested interests . Why would cannabis be different? I love this country and I'm a long term visa holder,another 16 years to go before it expires, I'll expire first . I am married and my wife has 3 sons. I hope they don't indulge in any recreational drug use . The air pollution is bad enough without anything self inflicted .

You have a lot of disinformation in your reply there is no evidence that mj is a gateway drug. And while it is true that long-term smoking of anything will hurt your lungs there are other ways that it can be used. I didn't smoke anything for most of my life and from my recent cxr my lungs look fine. But everybody has opinions and you're entitled to yours. I'm sure you don't use alcohol which damages your liver or Tylenol. I was in the medical field for 39 years and I know a thing or two about side effects of legal medications. But I agree that Thailand does not want the stigma of being the pot capital of Southeast Asia. But I am glad that they are getting away from the draconian laws that criminalize and put people in jail just for using a plant. Have a good day.
