Our family is a little weird--we pretty much always use 2 math curriculums...which means it's okay if one (or both) curriculums have gaps, but we get the benefit of two approaches. Thanks for the recommendation for the Math Antics channel!

I guess I don’t view supplements as a bad thing. I can understand wanting something with more fact drills but we love the short and sweet lessons. Master Books has served us well as K tested 3 grade levels higher than her book level a couple years ago and I’m in no way a math person. Good for you for trying to make it fun for E!

Thank you for this. Master Books recommends using math antics to help with concepts. Some kids need the gentle approach and now there is the practice makes perfect for extras if your kids need it. Math facts needs to be done in every curriculum doesn't it? I have one kid that shuts down with drill and kill while the other finds the drills fun. Math facts that stick is awesome too. I know a few homeschool moms that went to saxon math after 5th grade.

I loved Masterbook MLFLE for my 2 girls who are pretty good at math but hated long lessons. But after level 4 we switched to teaching textbooks because the lessons were just not clear enough and my daughters were complaining about new concepts being introduced before they mastered old concepts. Teaching textbooks has worked great for one of my daughters but my oldest who is now in 6th grade hated it because she prefers printed books, so half way through this year I switched her to Masterbooks principles of math 1 and so far so good! Thank you for sharing, love your channel!😊

Lack of math fact practice is true about a lot of curriculum. I think it's just assumed in general that parents will practice this on the side. Pretty much the same in public school too. So I wouldn't see that as a negative.

I started off using master books and I found it too gentle. I attempted to supplement as I struggled to find something more suitable. We have switched to Singapore for my third grader and it makes me so happy to see her eyes light up with understanding. My first grader loved master books. He flew through it and we have moved into the good and the beautiful math L2 and he is loving it even more.

I know every family is different. Thank goodness we have so many options 😊 master books math has been so disappointing! I guess I’m not okay with using 2-3 different math curricula. We used Right Start for 3 years and it is definitely solid. I just didn’t enjoy teaching it! We have settled on TG&TB for elementary math and love it. I am looking forward to using their new revised math too. For my middle school/high school, my kids have preferred the simple, straightforward approach of Saxon. Your reviews are so thoughtful. I love your channel!

To be fair, Masterbooks Math does instruct you to work on the math facts daily. They just don't explicitly state it every lesson. They have it explained in the beginning pages of the book. (Which a lot of people don't fully read).

@cheryllwaldrop9732 27 күн бұрын
I wish curriculum wouldn't do that. It doesn't take that much more ink to put a reminder on the page. Otherwise, your child thinks they are finished, and you the parent are just making them do "extra".

Math Mammoth! We started with Shiller Math and we all really enjoyed it. It was so much fun and easy to teach but it did not work. We went from that to the other extreme with Math U See and it was very gentle and hyper focused, haha. But that is what my hyper distracted and hyper active boy needed. It Worked! But it was incredibly boring. So I bought Singapore Dimensions but it was too much for me to teach. We finally landed on Math Mammoth! So so easy for me to teach. It is mastery based which is what we understood we need and it isn't as boring as Math U See. I have not heard good things about Teaching Textbooks. They say they are so behind and it does not prepare kids well for Highschool Math.

We used Teaching Textbooks this year but I quickly learned I needed to supplement especially for multiplication & division practice so we used the BJU Review sheets. For this coming year I bought MB Math as a companion for TT. I think my daughter will love the story and that there are only a few questions on each page.

We started the year off with TGTB math 2. 20 lessons in, I knew it wasn’t working out. Maybe their new simplified program would be good, but k-2 math was so time consuming, I can’t imagine doing it with more than 1 child to work with. We moved to masterbooks, then teaching textbooks, we tried AIM program from math you see, math mammoth, and we finally landed on BJU math. I’ve come to realize, my son and I both understand math/math language in the same way. That’s why we both loved the appeal of masterbooks. The concepts were easy to understand, but doing a weeks worth of lessons in one day to get him the repetition he needed or supplementing a bunch, I would much rather just go with another company. If it’s a concept he struggles with or needs more help, math mammoth’s blue series is definitely something we’re going to throw in as well.

My son got very frustrated with Horizon, and though he is quite good at math he began to dislike it so we decided to go with a gentler approach this year and will be using Master Books. I see it is a kind of reset to rebuild his confidence and sense of mastery. We are going to be supplementing with Outschool classes and some of the Workman publishing math books. Next year I am considering BJU press math.

My son in 3K is using MB Math K so I feel like it’s very gentle and below grade level. I won’t be purchasing their math again as I plan to switch him to something else for 4K. It’s my opinion that MB math, and LA for that matter, are very gentle and just not enough for a full subject curriculum. But my older boys use Saxon math so I’m used to a more rigorous math program 😂
