Kamachi was pretty much overwhelmed by the fact that he created a character so loved, that had to do a spin-off for her, even if his main focus was never on her, it's crazy when a character of yours grows so much beyond your expectations that it gets outta control even for you. This is literally the same situation that happened with Rem from ReZero, a character you never intended to be the focus of, becomes the face of your anime, is that really even a good thing with all things considered? I'm not so sure, the difference is that Tappei straight up continued with the story regardless of Rem's popularity and SPOILERS for season 2 of the anime: Negged the character out of the story which will remain in that state for quite some time, dude is a chad, he cares about delivering an actually good story rather than just pleasing in every way his fans, something that more often than not harms your work

While I'm a huge Mikoto stan, I think that having her more involved in Touma's story isn't the best for it. She's got her own title, which she OWNS so well (sister's arc, anyone?) that she doesn't need to be overbearing in Index as well. I'm more annoyed that she's not used well, when she is used, however. It would be nice if she was included less often but when used, she had some major impact on the story. My 2c. On the point of Rem in Re: Zero, I was really bummed when she was 'forgotten.' I hope that she can be brought back eventually, but that long-term goal will really pay out to the Rem fans when she is finally restored. Subaru will have to go to hell and back to make it happen, change and lose and also grow as a character, and that need to save Rem will keep him going when he'd just like to give up. I look forward to that day.

@@maxtacjurai1980 Regarding Rem in Re:Zero: (Spoilers ahead) Rem finally wakes up at the beginning of Arc 7 (probably 5. Anime season), but has lost her memories and doesn‘t trust Subaru. She then proceeds to flee after strangling him. They are also trapped within another country, so Subaru is trying his best to get the team back together while Emilia and the gang don‘t even show up for half the arc and Rem is hating Subaru and being confused as to why he still won‘t just leave her alone.

Now I'm less tired, I wanted to make a follow-up comment on my views on Misaka Mikoto in a positive light. I feel her character truly shines at its best when Kamachi pushes her out of her comfort zone. I also feel when she is more open with Touma putting aside her pride, ego, and tsundere side, the overall chemistry between the two really starts to boil nicely. I don't know about so much in a loving way but more in really good friends/comrades or two teens that have suffered. I honestly wouldn't mind a vol or SS where Touma and Mikoto just sit down and chat (no jokes, fighting, or anything comedic) about how the both of them and many others around them have been nothing more but tools to push the Magic and Science agendas and goals. I'm sure both their families would truly be disgusted if they find out what truly has been going on. Overall: When Kamachi writes and uses her well into the story, she is without question a very good character in the series.

Considering her obliviousness to magic, I think her intelligence actually contributes to this continued way of thinking. I agree it's frustrating, however imo it makes sense. Her entire life has only been the science side of things. Magic literally goes against everything she knows and how she would've been thought to think and process things. Her science background by default causes her to try and rationalize things using logic as she knows it and in ways it makes sense. In her eyes powers can only be created from Esper abilities so the magic she has witnessed in her head can only be some sort of Esper ability even if it stretches the limit of what she has known esper abilities to be.

@@AeonofHorus For me it's because of her intelligence she is still trying to rationalise it in terms that make sense to her, no matter how many times she sees it her brain isn't going to make the leap to magic because to someone like her that would just be silly. Also as far as I can remember (it has been a while) no one has taken the time to actually just sit her down and straight up explain it. Even Hamazura has had a better introduction to it and I'd argue him not being as scientifically inclined helps him to be more open minded to the concept. Imo she's too steeped in science to just understand and accept magic on her own, it will take someone like Touma, Othinus or index straight up breaking it down before her mindset changes, and even then she'd probably still be hesitant. However being told that these are different rules would at least allow her to start changing how she approaches it.

@@comicmisconceptions4602 That makes sense to us as readers, but in universe esper abilities are a norm in AC and make sense from a scientific standpoint and are based on rules and calculations. So it's not so much that magic can't exist, so much as it is that anyone seeing magic (that is aware of esper abilities) is probably going to assume that it is some sort of esper ability instead of making the leap to it being actually magic. If that makes sense? Like irl when we see magic tricks we don't consider it actual magic we just think to ourselves there must be a trick to it. Same way in the toaru universe they probably think it must be esper abilities somehow.

I thought it was worth it for her to be there in WW3 just for that last scene with Touma (and when she finds his gekota strap as well), really emotional scene to me The way she is in NT2-6 is an extension of her wanting to aid Touma (even though he hasn't exactly asked for her help yet) so I'd say it's way less static than OT6-13 I feel like Mikoto going back to herself in NT16 and later is because the AAA satisfied her thirst for power (temporarily at least, in GT2 her dev is restarted on a more positive note) And also in 22R if she hadn't set the AAA to take Touma's side because she felt something was off (iirc she was the only one to take Touma's side there), things wouldn't have gone so smoothly too Well that's what I think anyway! It would be emotional maybe if the audience is unaware if he's alive but knowing he is doesn't do anything for me. I mean that point about the AAA makes some sense, but I don't think that alone would be enough for her to understand and be a part of Touma's world which is her main motive. Regardless, its a shame that it did stop as it felt like it could have continued instead of coming to an abrupt end after just one volume. Sure but you don't need Misaka specifically for that, you need the AAA. Or Kamachi could have wrote another tech or thing to throw in there instead. The main problem is that Misaka's character is flat after NT15, and in the final volume there is no climax for her character when there is one for Touma, Shokuhou, Index etc

I really agree with you. Having Mikoto in WWIII arc actually gives Mikoto the view that she has lost him. And that affects her, being sad and all. And from that, comes her desire of involving with Kamijou to help him. In Acqua of Back arc, she is certain that he always got involved in big accidents that could kill him, which she thought just a one time thing with the Sisters and Accelerator. We can see her getting involved with him in the later NT volumes because she didn't want to lose him again like in WWIII. It might not be emotional to the audience but to Mikoto, oh yes. But she notices that most of the time she isn't any help. Which leads to NT 13 where she really sees that with the High Priest. She also realizes that she is a burden to Kamijou, and he said it himself. But I think it's worth to mention that Kamijou was glad that it was Mikoto herself who was him, not Index or Othinus. I think this is probably because of Mikoto gives some sense normalcy to him as Mikoto just being Mikoto despite the situation. Back to NT 13, she got frustrated because she wants to stand by his side. In the earlier chapters, she wants to do that by getting him to tell her about the Othinus accident, trying to understand him. This is her way of standing by his side, so not necessarily just to protect him. This leads to her to NT 15, which she wants catch up to him because he's just so far away and standing on a stage not in her reach. Oh, but NT 22R is magnificent. I like to say that she's one of the MVP, despite not doing much, being under mind control and not having the same focus as Shokuhou. If there's no Mikoto, there would be no AAA. If there's no AAA, then Kamijou would not have been saved. I don't think we should disregard of having both Mikoto and the AAA resulted in saving Kamijou. First, she manage to take Kamijou out of the building by commanding the AAA. Then, she's trying to deal with KnT by giving earlier command to the AAA. In a way, she unconsciously (which is literally) giving supports to Kamijou. If she didn't, then Kamijou would have a hard time dealing with KnT, Shokuhou and Mikoto at the same time. Because of her "support", Kamijou only needs to deal with KnT, since Shokuhou got injured and both Mikoto and Index having a death battle. Edited: I would also add that we shouldn't downplay character's role by saying "It doesn't matter you're doing it. Someone else could have done it." Remember NT9? Will pointed this out and said that at the end of the day, it's you who have done it. Not someone else. That's your achievement. Nobody else can take that. I'm just summing it up. Mikoto having the AAA is basically the same as Kamijou with Imagine Breaker. Well, not exactly the same but I'm saying they're extra tools that really helps them. Actually, this makes more sense with Kamijou dragons.

I would write something about this: 1. OT5: Well, I really enjoyed seeing this ad in the light novels we can see more about Mikoto's thoughts, one of these is the main reason for this volume, I think. She thought that she was special to him, and in this volume, she found out that it was a lie, so this helped her avoid thinking about her like this. It was a part of her ego. 2. I wonder why you didn't mention her final conversation with Touma in NT3. 3. I think she is a versatile character, that is the reason because she can get a lot of random moments with different characters and they still feel fun. 4. Characters with less screentime usually show us fewer flaws, an example of this could be Minato from Naruto. And it is the same for Mikoto, Kanzaki, or Itsuwa, so I don't think Kanzaki or Itsuwa are better characters than Mikoto. 5. NT2 was a conclusion for her moments in the world war iii arc, she knows she can't stop him and, at the same time, she knows she can help him during the battle. 6. Talking about NT22R, we can say that one of the reasons for Mikoto's screentime, is Shokuhou, because I can't think of a valid reason for her to be there without Mikoto. 7. In the last interview, Kamachi said that he had some plans for her, so don't worry about that. I think she won't follow the same way to NT17, because this time she has friends on her side, Shokuhou and maybe Kuroko. 8. I would like to read more about her relationship with her parents and how she explains the sisters to them and her friends. Well, I would say you did a neutral analysis even I don't share some of your points of view. Good job.

I think one of the advantage and disadvantage of the timeline of the entire Raildex universe is that it moves very slowly in relation to the readers. How long as time passed since the start of the story, about a year? Advantage for Kamachi is that he can focus on the world and plot and doesn't need to do much character development since most people don't change that much in that short amount of time. The disadvantage is for us the audience, after more than a decade of stories no one really grows as a character. If there's an anime reboot, I hope they streamline some of the less important arc and make Misaka more relevant even if just only in slice of life situations.

I'll get to the meat of the situation your OT segment regarding her character I agree with early Mikoto was heavily flawed and very arrogant that much is a fact but she did slowly progressed not as obvious as to characters like Accelerator but it exits. Now moving along. NT at this point in time from NT2 and 5 Misaka was trying to support and aid Kamijou she called it a sign of being a good woman. Up until NT10 where you covered her fight with Touma that was done perfectly the poetic role flip like you mentioned was quite Interesting it was my 2nd favorite fight in NT10. Now regarding her quest for power arc she realizes she is weak to the outside world of magic and sorcery and she wants power. She grew a bit dark and psychic and went on a full rampage mental break down in NT17. She wanted to be on the same realm as Kamijou and she was heavily desperate. But as soon as we switch to NT18 Kamachi negates all of this build up if I'm being honest I didint bother me however I'd be lying If I said I wasent dissapointed by Kamachi switching. A lot of NT's flaws including Mikoto has to do with Kamachi's inconsistent writing as an author which I kinda hate. As you said I felt like neither she nor Shoukhou *had* to be there just kinda dragged and while Misaki got a proper conculsion and Mikoto didn't I felt like this was for one reason. *GT this is where I'm betting all of my money. I believe Kamachi created all of this build up in the Kamisato arc and will work from step one once again from GT2 except in a positive route which will allow her character to fully shine and her conclusion will be hopefully magnificent. However in order for this to work her understanding of magic needs to be applied to her character so I do hope she and Index or Othinus just someone explain the world to her it would help a lot. Misaka Is a good person with a pretty positve mindset she is a bit bratty early on but she is a middle schooler after all, she will be willing to help out and take risks as well. Overall I love Misaka as a person/character but she can be top tier of the index heroines/girls in general if Kamachi simply follows up on her route and gives her more meaning. I enjoy her comedic routes but I think there can be so much more!! Overall good video I loved hearing your different opinions Im heavily excited to see your thoguhts on her character in railgun she is amazing there!

I like how you points out some of misaka's lack of relevance in the index series, as misaka fan I also want her to have a major/big relevance to the plot and not just come and go character in this series. I mean I think her character still has a lot of potential and its only a waste if kazuma kamachi will limit her involvement in magic side and decided to stick to her being in denial or ignorant about magic side. I hope that we see more improvement in her character in Index GT if its remain the same like the past volumes I really don't know

I've already made character vids for the other main characters of the franchise so it would be strange for me not to cover Misaka. while she's not my favourite character in the world, I still like her and is way better than most female characters in anime/manga as a whole. This might just be my interpretation of the work but I feel like people overplayed the "Misaka goes mad for power" aspect of NT15. There's a scene at the end of chapter 2 where Misaka curls up and nearly vomits from the sudden realization of what she was doing in her confrontation with Salome, and what echoed in her mind wasn't Salome calling her weak, but calling her nuts. I think, after snapping, Misaka did a course correction within the volume itself, she still wanted more power, but she didn't want to sacrifice who she was as a person to get it. I think that's why she was so overjoyed with the A.A.A, because it let her do exactly that, attachment is in its name, she didn't have to change to use its power. Edgy Misaka, regretful Misaka, and overjoyed to the point of laughing Misaka is still more interesting than normal Misaka though.

When i watch index, i loved misaka so much because of her design and abilities. However, she only appears a little with no fight scene and that makes me wondering why did the author create her in the first place? Eventually, when i watch railgun, i finally saw her truth charecter and her power! And it was extremely fantastic! She is my favourite after watching railgun

For me the moment I saw Misaka I already know that she will be my favorite character not only in To aru series but to all anime that I've watched and I'm watching anime for almost 20 yrs I start when I'm four years old that's how big her impact to me. Imo her character mainly revolves around her ego as a level 5 which u mentioned earlier in this video. Personally, I don’t mind her appearance in volumes where she’s not needed, but I do somewhat agree with your point that it’s a waste of opportunity for her character. Same, I hope kamachi would bring back her thirst for power introduced in NT15. Altho unlike in NT15 where her thirst for power was influenced by her damaged ego from the events of NT13, I see Kamachi hinting in GT that her thirst for power would now be motivated by her will to protect Touma ( since she and Shokuhou had the chance to witness Touma’s vulnerable state in GT2 ) Nice that you finally made a vid about Misaka, Thanks Aeon!

OT5 did have one surprisingly hard to notice line from Misaka that could be construed as characterization but probably more for plot, as it is the first time Mikoto mentions to Touma that the clones are being spread around the world. Its kind of easy to miss too. Not much to it though, other than giving an update on the clone situation but also reminds the audience that Mikoto actually does keep up with them. (Though shame we never got to actually see it much beyond her say so)

Index and Railgun have blurred in my memories, and I've only watched the anime and read some of the manga, but I will say: Misaka's character development during the sisters arc was a 10/10 world-class masterpiece, across all media. Railgun is way better than Index, but I still enjoy her appearances in Index... but they don't count for much. Index season 3 was dismal, and Misaka turning up for 10 seconds at the end of each episode was pointless. One of the greatest characters I've ever watched/read and they don't seem to know what to do with her.

Thank you for doing this analysis! Misaka is my favorite of all time but i definitely agree with you on how most of her scenes in index are wasteful and just about fan service; I don't like to think that Kamachi is doing that in purpose so Touma won't get upstaged by her in some way, and ends up becoming underwhelming when she was about to be relevant and showing potential. Overall, Misaka is an excellent character in Railgun but if there wasn't a spinoff for her, it would really be such a waste of her character. Her best traits for me are her vulnerability and independence, although at times she is compelled to act and gets violent because of her strong sense of justice which is somehow quite similar to Touma. Misaka in Index is more of a support character no matter how she wants to get involved in Touma's world to stand side by side with him, she can only touch the surface. And it's causing a rift between her beliefs and ideals about the Magic vs Science side, yet she feels distant to Touma who is scaling on both sides and fighting it "alone" (not for his sake), Misaka understands that selfishness and not wanting to get anyone involved to avoid others from getting hurt so she tries so hard to fight alongside Touma so he can share that burden with her, but to the point that she feels helpless, and that vulnerability is a character development for me since her confidence is shattered and leaves her desperate for power to protect others. But Misaka is definitely holding back on allowing her dark side although she is aware of it, there were times that she almost gave in to it, but because of her strong sense of justice and still bearing the sins of her past she cannot allow herself to be swallowed up by becoming a monster created by Academy City, for her friends who supported her and for her sisters that she wanted to live free from danger. So i guess instead of getting her more power, Kamachi is making her more of a moral support to Touma just like the others. Some of her scenes might look pointless, but it's her way of "trying" and ends up being rejected later on. She is like the kind of friend that you get into random fights and random events in your ordinary life, but will always be there when you need them and will set you straight if you get naughty 😉. You don't have to be strong to help or save people, you just have the will to do it. Which is ironically, the point of Touma being a Level 0 (the weakest) and taking on stronger enemies to protect everyone.

Oh my lord, you finally made this! Spoilers: .. ... .. I'm noticing more and more that Kamachi loves to play on what Nietzsche once said: "He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you." Gaze into the abyss if you dare. If you really think about it Touma and Mikoto are not only rubbing off each other but also at times seem to become their own monster. In Railgun's Daihasei Arc, we see Mikoto wants to crush Gensei but forgets even if she wins, what will be the cost? In the end, she falls for Gensei's trap and becomes nothing more than a killing machine for Gensei to use as a puppet. Then Touma has to become an even bigger monster to save her. Then in NT15 and GT2-3 as you pointed out because she wants power (much like OT3 Accelerator, the monster she hated) so no one can stand in her way or harm anyone she cares about. Then with Touma, you had Mikoto calling him out in OT16 and NT10 for being a hypocrite and even having to break his illusions that there is no perfect world. And finally, you have NT22R where you had KnT who was born from Touma, and Touma himself turn into Dragons and fight to the death with Mikoto, Misaki, and Index all suffering in the crossfire. In the end, it feels like as the series goes on, the more Touma and Mikoto are at breaking point and are becoming their own worst enemy. As for my thoughts on Mikoto herself, I quite like her and feel she is one of the better Tsunderes to come out. My biggest pet pee is her extreme popularity has led to some of the biggest corruption and some of the most toxic discussion/bullying I have seen in this fandom. Sorry for the long and messy post, I wanted to go deeper but I'm really tired and I wanted to keep it friendly and peaceful.

They both were intended to introduce the viewers to their intended sides (Magic and Science) and then be pushed to the sidelines in favor of new relevant characters. Kamachi himself never intended for the two of them to be too relevant for the future volumes and that’s why they both kinda stop getting character development and relevant screen time after their character arcs (which both happen in the first 3-4 volumes). Their main role was to introduce the audience to their respective sides and show both the virtues and vices/darkness of both science and magic. After that they got properly sidelined by Kamachi but in those 3-4 volumes they gained so much popularity that he decided against completely overshadowing them. But because he had nothing relevant planned for the two of them he had to rely on random likable moments, that’s why for a huge portion of the series both Index and Mikoto get featured primarily in comedic relief or cute scenes in order to please the audience. Mikoto got the better end of the bargain though, because she got her own spin-off which is great. Index got wasted on the other hand, in my opinion. If Kamachi didn’t want them to become side characters, he should have recalibrated the series and thought of creative ways to give them meaningful screentime and character development. All the critical points Aoen made for Mikoto’s screentime after her arc can also be said in the exact same way about Index and it wouldn’t be wrong. People just like to pretend for some reason that Index isn’t in the same situation as Mikoto… she definitely is in a very similar situation as Mikoto and in my opinion has it even worse than her, people just like to cope and make their own versions of the story and characters. I really like both Mikoto and Index and despite the treatment that they’ve got so far they definitely are great characters who deserve their popularity, without them we wouldn’t have Toaru. We can only hope that they both get treated better in the future.

And imo it makes sense for Touma to confine in her since she knew him before the memory loss but wasnt so close to him that he would conceal this this info like he did with index. Damn Aeon, you're one brave man... There's already a bunch of Mikoto fans that are raging on twitter calling you a "Misaka hater". I salute you 🤚. Personally, I'm not that big of a fan of Mikoto myself, but I hate all the heroines equally so there' that. All the toaru heroines kinda suck ngl and the most popular one getting criticism after years of praise from the fans is warranted imo. For example: Index -Doesn't develop very much even if she's the title character of the series. -Annoying personality like Morgana from Persona 5 except less useful. -Can feel like a plot device to develop Touma's character. -If you hate her, you're basically beating a dead horse at this point. Misaka -Takes up a lot of screentime for static development to her overall character, despite having her very own spinoff. -Prevents other characters to shine, especially MAIN characters such as Accelerator and Hamazura. -Her clones has more importance in the overall story than her (bruh). -Basically a discount Tohsaka Rin from the Fate series. Othinus -Becomes irrelevant after NT8-10 -Has an interesting backstory and motivation but isn't really explored much. -Stole Index's role as Touma's "information giver" and made him more dumb in certain scenes. -Should've died but Kamachi is too much of a pussy to kill of good characters and now she's sorta... "there". Misaki -Yuri baiting with Mikoto (takes up screentime). -Her actions get swept under the rug and forgiven very easily, unlike Othinus who recieved some sort of punishment. -Feels very "forced" into the story (Touma lost his memories 2 times? Are you kidding me?). Overall, I hate all the heroines and fans that take this shit too seriously. Sorry for the long rant list but sometimes, Toaru twitter fans really grinds my gears.

I feel like all of the small insignificant scenes Mikoto had are just highlighting that she wants to help him. I agree that she could do more but we cannot disregard these kind of scenes, no matter the characters. It can mean something in the future. This is the same as Yuki Judai from YuGiOh! GX where he always wins in every duel, to the point that it is meaningless. That eventually broke him because he was dragged into life and death battle and people rely on him to win, something like that. Again, the small scenes can be insignificant but when you pile them up, it is big. And I would say it is the same as a life & death battle situation where a second can make a difference. (SPOILER) . . . . . . I'm saying this because as an example, if I remember correctly in NT6, she saves Kamijou from being shot by Leivinia. Again, could be more, but still need appreciate the scenes.

I actually hate the likable aspect of this character. I find her unlikeable aspect to be more interesting especially the power-hungry part you mentioned in the video. Her ignorant to magic is super annoying, her pairing with Misaki is not that bad since I do like their dynamic together but I hate it when Kamachi used them as a yuri bait. I wish for more Mikoto-Accelerator interaction and I hope one day she will find out about the parameter list system because her message to the poor level 0 in the level upper arc is not helpful.

On the other hand, It is said in Railgun manga that she wants to create a world where the sisters were seen as real humans and for that reason, she accepted to work with Shokuhou in Doppel arc. Truly, Mikoto wouldn't need the forgive of the sisters because It is not her fault, but for her personality, she thinks that It is.

Not really, I said they are entertaining (most the time), but I'm talking about her progression as a character. The thing is most other girls only have one volume worth of screentime to shine, then they are pretty much secondary side characters after that. That's just Kamachi's style of writing.
