As to the duel at Ganryujima well there was an eye witness a Hatamoto named Numata . Your version is the same as the Yoshikawa Eiji novel which Yoshikawa himself admitted was fiction .He spent a long time researching his book and could not find anything so he wrote a fictionalized adventure novel .He admits this in the preface to the original serialization of his novel in the Shimbum newspaper . Back to Numata, Musashi arrived first accompanied by his acolytes which already broke the rules as both had agreed to come alone . Kojiro came to the island by boat, its assumed he was younger than Musashi .The duel was witnessed by only a few Hosokawa retainers . Musashi used a bokken and felled Kojiro . Musashi won and Kojiro was still alive, as he was getting up Kojiro was murdered by Musashi's acolytes . The enraged Hosokawa retainers escorted Musashi and his retinue out of Hosokawa territories . The island is renamed Ganryujima from Funajima after Kojiro's sword style . sources The Bushudenreiki which is the earliest account of Musashi .It was written by the descendent of one of Musashi's adopted sons about 50 years after his death . The Numata account is also in Tokitsu Kenji's book .both are translated to English.William De Lange . As to your original question the answer would be Tokugawa Ieyasu . He was the greatest samurai bringing peace after 250 plus years of civil war .
