You are literally the first guy that gave a fair answer about the squier affinity, because I am starting a bend and i needed an electric guitar (i only have an acoustic) but don't have much money to spend, and when i'm reviewing sqiuer everyone is saying it's a good "BEGINNERS" guitar and i'm not a beginner but don't want to spend too much money on american standards, so thank for the tip that it's good enough for studio recordings and live shows. :)
@TheGuitarGeek7 жыл бұрын
Hey Frankie, welcome to the world of electric guitar, it's a beautiful journey! The affinity I have has been setup properly and had it's pickups upgraded but I play it as often as my more expensive guitars. You could pickup a used affinity for quite cheap and then spend money getting a tech to set it up for you. Where are you from?
@frenkie147 жыл бұрын
I'm from Zagreb, Croatia. The thing is, we just started a bend and make our own music so we plan to do gig, maybe record a demo but I only have an electro acoustic and a fake strat "Evergreen" that i got when i was a kid and it's not really a good guitar. I'm doing vocals and rythm guitar so i think i don't really need a expecive guitar (at least for now while we don't make any money from it) so i wanted to know are those affinitys worth buying for someone in my position.

I've got a milennium Affinity which I bought for I think just over £110 if memory serves way back in 2000 and it was one of the better ones as it has the classic 8 hole scratchplate and not the later and crappier 11 hole modern one although I definately think the Affinity is a victim of "guitar snobbery" but see as long as the body and neck are solid, then you're pretty much golden as you then have a basic shell you can upgrade as and when you have the money. I've hardly had to do anything at all to mine except change the string trees for the roller version, hell even the intonation was set right when it came out the box so I think whomever was working in that chinese factory at the time actually took the extra time to set it up before it left the factory. I've been working to the "mod with each string change" scenario and just recently burst my last .08 E string so now it's time to put on the HSH loaded pickguard with "Gilmour" modification and a set of the Rev. Willy's .07's..... Ahaow haow haow haow. Then I'll be a step closer to defining my "own" sound. lol

I dont know what to do, i have an affinity stratocaster sunburst strat that i like a lot, ive got a really good guitar, i hear a lot of people complaining about the frets being too sharpy and uncomfortable to play, but mines is 10/10, only 1 or 2 on the last frets are barely sharp, also the tunners are very good, it stays in tune nicely, and a lot of people complains about this special editions tunners, i dont know if i should buy this guitar to replace mi actual stratocaster.

Daryan Skye sounds like you already have your answer man
@georgeprice79226 жыл бұрын
I like the SOUND of the blue sparkle a little better than the pink sparkle. Since I don't use the tremolo arm, I'm not as concerned about that taking the guitar out of tune. The frets, those can be worked on to get the sharp edges removed. (As you can probably guess by now, I'm not a modder type person - unless the pick ups go south or the tuners can't/won't tune, I won't change them out, but will ALWAYS - no matter if it's absolutely brand new or absolutely used - change the strings first thing to either Ernie Ball .009's or the GHS David Gilmour signature set - the GHSDGLP set,which I believe starts with a .010 gauge.)

My $129 strat bullet had a fine neck and frets were good, although the ends could use a bit of sanding, but still playable. It could be tuned although not the best tuners. I was going to simply buy a warmoth neck but I don't think it needs it right now anyway. I did put new pickups in it. the ones in it we're fine for rock but clean they sounded a bit dull to my ears. I'm replacing with cs 69s.
@zac10025 жыл бұрын
Question. I was considering getting some Custom Shop 69's for my old beloved Affinity Strat (it was my first electric)...Are those Fender pickups compatible with the current electronics (tone pots etc.) that are in my guitar?
@only-ok7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for video! I've been playing my modified Squier Bullet Strat (originally SSS, modified to be HSS, with Wilkingson humbucker in the bridge position) for couple of years, but that strat has a lot of problems: with tunung keys, with saddle - strings won't last long, with input jack, etc. I bought it used for like 70$, so actually, I think I see no point in modifying that cheap Chinese Squier Bullet body. BUT, I've got really used to the sound of that Wilkingson humbucker and now I am kinda having a dilemma - to buy Squier Affinity HSS and modify it, OR to buy a Fender MIM Standard Strat HSS and install Wilkingson humbucker in that? (Yep, I know, that sounds a little crazy, but I think I don't like the sound of that Fender humbucker).
@TheGuitarGeek7 жыл бұрын
That's a dilemma! The affinity series is great but the body is thinner than a standard strat. It depends on your budget. I would seriously consider the Squier Classic Vibe series as it's the best bang for your buck :)

I thought the guitars were very similar. I recently bought a Squier Vintage Modified Strat (Indonesian) and I love it. It is light and resonant than my old Mexi example. It has a glossy neck but isn't "sticky." I was expecting new pickups for the Duncan Designs (which were dung in an old Schecter) but I'm very happy. The Classic Vibe is a Chinese guitar that some are raving over. Asian guitars are screaming values. I would say buy a new Squier and mod if you aren't happy with it. I've read or watched advice to change the tuners, electronics and trem. I am not going to change a thing.

I've had one of each of those guitars and the stock classic vibe was my favorite. New tremolo block and that guitar would be one of the best in its price range

Good updates - I've used Iron Gear pickups in a recent HSS Strat a like parts build of my own. Hugely impressed. So much so that I'm considering putting Texas Locos on my main Strat - which happens to be a modded Squier! That is actually a very old JV 62 from 1983. Before I knew it would be worth something I started to mod it - that now has strap locks (I'm with you on that every guitar I have has them fitted) sperzel tuners and old (i.e. 80s TBX style) USA Standard electrics. But as I say I'm seriously thinking of building a Texas Locos set up and trying that out - I can always swap back. I have another Squire strat - thin bodied one that I put cheap(ish) rail pickups in to with a bunch of coil switches for fun - updated locking tuners, strap locks, new string saddles (made a huge difference) ... that's a great backup guitar for just having available as it has a lot of tones.

By affordable, if you're staying under about $200, I'd go for a used Vintage V6 if sticking with the Strat model. Nothing wrong with the affinity at all. A little bit more money would get you a used Squier Classic Vibe Strat or Tele.

whats your take on kit guitars and the chibson?
@TheGuitarGeek7 жыл бұрын
Kit guitars are a cheap way to learn how a guitar is put together and you can get a fun project out of it. Chibson guitars can be beautiful looking instruments but rife with problems. They are not Gibsons and shouldn't be branded as such. They can be serviceable instruments after ploughing a lot of cash into them. You're better off getting an Epiphone, Vintage or even... a Gibson!
@stepvanjoe34697 жыл бұрын
TheGuitarGeek + I agree with you on the chibsons 100% Although I feel Gibson's are over priced and the quality can be questioned, They should not be mirrored in the way chibson makes them...fake serial numbers, branding etc, kit guitars can be fantastic!, my P.R.S. copy I put together plays remarkably well, did have to do alot of sanding, dressing and leveling frets, brass nut Wilkinson hardware, SG wiring harness, hex bucker pickups....anyway you get the idea. It was a fun build that took me well over a year when I had free time

TheGuitarGeek would the fender tuners fit on it?
@Leo_ofRedKeep7 жыл бұрын
A guitar that has to be fully fixed and updated after buying it is *not a beginner's guitar*. It is a guitar for a scrooge with specialised technical abilities and cheap access to parts like better pickups or it is at best a basis for someone who just wants to tweak his own configuration. In the latter case, you might be better off with a Harley Benton kit for less than half the price of an Affinity. After replacing the pickups, tuners and whatever else had to, how far is the total price from that of a Squier Standard? If a beginner had to pay someone to do it in addition to performing a full setup, how far would he be from a Mexican Strat?
@TheGuitarGeek7 жыл бұрын
Leo of Red Keep good points Leo. Without the mods they would be fine for a beginner but one would hope that they could mod this guitar so it could stay with them longer. Plus.. These are sparkle...
@Leo_ofRedKeep7 жыл бұрын
Well, sparkle does add something, I'm sure ;-) I have considered buying an Affinity myself and I have absolutely no intention to modify anything apart from setting it up and replacing the strings after they fall off. This is why I am watching such videos. Thanks for making them, by the way.

Iron Gear pickups can be ok, I quite liked the hot slag in the neck of my Ibanez ART, but I found the steamhammer bridge pickup to be quite mushy and lacking definition. I think I put a DiMarzio Fred (bought on eBay for cheaps) in the bridge of that, which was much tighter sounding rock and roll pickup. Tone Zone is good in very bright guitars. I think my old affinity Squier has some second hand Seymour Duncan noiseless STK1 single coil size pickups and they were with every penny. Nuts, saddles and fretwork really make the difference between a poor guitar and a good one though. If you have the skills to level, crown and dress the ends of the frets of a cheap guitar, it suddenly becomes awesome. Getting a precut nut set right or cutting your own from a blank is pretty easy. Saddles made from good steel rather than pot metal makes a big difference, even moreso if the rest of the bridge is similarly good.

New pickups on pink guitar are also cheap, that`s why it doesn`t sound much better. You should put Duncans or Dimarzios and Graphtech nut, then the results would be much better. Better tuners are easy to buy USED for $25-50 (Grover, Gotoh or even Ping are a safe play). An Affinity just stock is a 2nd rate nice guitar. USED and upgraded you can have a nice Strat/Tele for easily under $250

But which one was it?

Worth modifying? No to pups, tuners. It's a budget axe. Set up and intonation yes. Frets, yes. I wouldn't spend money on one, I'd just buy a better guitar.

If you have to modify a guitar then you’ve bought the wrong guitar! Squier are the bottom of the barrel and work you have to do outweighs the benefits. Fretwork is for experienced guitar repair people and expensive. Buy the the you have it good enough you’d have bought a used MIM. The thin bodies are a deal breaker along with the big ugly headstock and junk electronics. The only good thing about them is the colours!
