Excellent trip report. I was there a few years ago with my wife. We visited twice, at the late afternoon the place is rather empty and there is a feeling of a "ghost town" Before noon there are hordes of tourists.

I believe you can access Mont St Michel 24/7 (much like any town/village), but the stores and attractions will have regular hours depending on the season and closed on certain holidays.
