I have found in my environment (window sill grower in Michigan) that growing phals in pure moss is the kiss of death. Especially for the species types or primary hybrids. The roots just rot and die. This is true even if I keep the moss just slightly moist (never saturated), if I let the moss dry out completely for several days between watering, or whatever. This is true with the highest quality New Zealand sphagnum moss. I have learned this the hard way over my trials for the last 1.5 years. I believe moss works much better in warmer temperatures. Very frustrating!

Hi! Thanks for your message. A friend of mine recently also told me that moss in his environment (upper state new york) isn't ideal, but eventually, we landed on the water quality was too hard for his orchid. How long is your typical wet-dry cycle in your environment? Do you think there it is related to ventilation? (I used to have poor results with moss...and it was due to poor ventilation)
