Thanks for what you said at the beginning. That meant a lot. My mother died from cancer two years ago and I appreciate the thoughts. Good subject matter as well.

My husband and I were talking about this last week when I started the journey at looking at my own voice. There is a very famous TV personality called Sanma Akashiya in Japan, and he is known for his raspy voice. The legend goes is that he could never stop talking, even as a young lad, and some say he has ALWAYS had this raspy voice. It is very unique. My argument to my husband is that, as a rich, well known TV host, comedian and personality, he most definitely has a vocal team to help him maintain his vocal health. How else could he survive his voice, given that he can't ever stop talking XD We have been doing lots of research in Japan about vocal care and tips because sometimes the Western style is not available to use (slippery elm is one thing hard to find here). It has really opened our eyes to the professional speakers and singers we have seen. Very interesting.

Great video as always, Doctor Dan! When my students have natural "rasp" that isn't being done purposely (like in my screaming tutorials) it's usually due to some kind of medical condition like you mentioned. I always tell my students, the voice really should not be raspy or husky if we're not intentionally trying to add rasp in the rock and roll way (which is very specific and uses other tissues that are not the vocal folds). Usually I find that much rasp comes from vocal fold weakness usually on one side or the other. I've had students who were born with mild vocal fold paralysis like you mentioned and people who's vocal folds were weakened by a cold or bronchitis. I find that the Adduction muscles are weak and it's hard to bring the chords together smoothly and we get some air and rasp escaping. Also these people with the weaker cords tend to slam their cords and yell quite a bit to compensate for the weakness and they can end up with Polyps and other slamming related injuries. To cure these issues, I do a lot of vocal strengthening exercises that encourage good compression and will build that strength back up and essentially clear up the voice. We can then add rasp on top by flapping the other tissues like the soft palate, uvula and sinuses for the healthy version! Love all your videos - I'm always sending students your way! Great and thorough information as always.

Curious as to your thoughts about singers like Rod Stewart and Ray LaMontagne (among others) - they each have that raspy, gritty quality that is part and parcel of their vocal 'signature'. Do you imagine it's a more or less fixed and stable part of their natural vocal function?

Hi, Erich. Rod Steward is an excellent example as to why we need to establish clean sustainable phonation. Stewart has had a number of surgeries on his voice, in part, because of the phonatory patterns that his voice employs.

Dr Dan's Voice Essentials IWould mean that all 'textured' voices are necessarily headed for vocal damage? Might that depend on vocal load, intensity and range demands? I am frankly amazed that voices can even endure the distortions heard in Metalcore and related styles
@DrDanRobinson
@DrDanRobinson 6 жыл бұрын
No, some voices can endure the vocal load of the heavier genres. This being said, all voices will benefit from improved technique.

Dr Dan's Voice Essentials Right - and therefore each singer who wants a sustainable career needs to work regularly on basic vocall health & strength, then layer on their chosen 'texture', correct?

I’m having a bit of trouble with my voice. I feel like I’m being lightly strangled whenever I speak, though I am using my natural voice. Is there any way to remedy that without a doctor or surgery?
