I've spent a lot of time (and money!) fixing up my Mini Cooper S R53. When I first got it, it was in a terrible condition and was absolutely not safe to be on the road.
Fast-forward a few months and has it finally managed to get an MOT and be road legal??

Well done Nino.... I've been watching all of your mini content over the last week or so and I've really enjoyed it. Its amazing how far you've come and how much confidence you now have to take on all of the repairs that you've done. I have an r53 as well and want to start doing my own work. I already have a few projects that I'm going to tackle like the supercharger service plus some upgrades. I was going to have a go at the clutch but after watching several videos including yours I decided to chicken out. I hope I can build up the confidence to be able to do half of the things that you have. I'm looking forward to more mini content. Good luck and stay safe.

Proper result Nino. Loving the "every day is a school day" mentality where you are prepared to try so much maintenance rather than just paying for it to be carried out, which gives added satisfaction of seeing the fruits of your labour. Recommend Plusgas for freeing fasteners, rather than WD40 which I consider a "does everything in an average way" product. Another product you may want to consider is Vactan as a rust converter/primer that was basically for the professional market but is now sold to the general market - it appears to be highly recommended by the boating fraternity - with me only mentioning this after seeing the trailing arm and shocker body in the spring change video, so may be worth searching out online reviews.
@NotEconomicallyViable

@billsheehy1660
@billsheehy1660 2 жыл бұрын
Its probably common Knowledge but I also discovered using a six side socket is likely to grip. Always use them on anything dodgy looking. I think you will also find impact sockets are six sided. You done well mate.
@NotEconomicallyViable
@NotEconomicallyViable 2 жыл бұрын
People have been telling me in the comments that the only thing they'll use a 12-point socket on is a 12-point nut 🤷‍♂️ Might have to invest in a decent set of six-siders
@billsheehy1660
@billsheehy1660 2 жыл бұрын
@@NotEconomicallyViable Sorry I may have misunderstood. I will absolutely use 12 point on a 12 point nut / bolt. But if a six point / sided nut / bolt looks dodgy I will use a 6 point socket as apposed to a 12 as its less likely to slip off. The most common sizes come pretty cheap. I use Halfords / US pro. Be careful it can open a whole debate. I also have a 45 year old set that I got through Kays catalogue. 45 years ago. None of them have failed. We used to use a lot of imperial / AF tools. You could do a clutch on a Vauxhall Viva with a 7/16, 1/2" and 9/16. About 300 times easier than you doing the engine work on that mini.

Hey bud I am slowly making my way through all your videos, I'm probably about half way. Love you and your brand. Don't ever lose that excitement for fixing something in your journey. I remember that feeling when I was 15-16 doing similar repairs to my car just so I could go around town or to school. Now I am constantly fixing things for my business or farm and sometimes I don't have that excitement anymore. So thanks for reminding me to be appreciative of my skill set and that I should enjoy it more.

I’ve enjoyed this series. I’ve enjoyed getting stuck into maintaining our cars…doing it myself takes the sting out if running two old six cylinder BMW’s. I genuinely enjoy it to.

Nino, Well done, I remember you were doing this to flip it & work your way up to an Aston, so what are you doing next? Also there are a lot of channels flipping cars & they do a profit statement at the end of the video run when the cars sold. Will you be doing one, sort of curious to see costs for this one. Might be tempted to do one myself as a funding route for my resto mod on my R56. I need £4-5k for a forged engine I want, so thinking flipping 3 cars should do it hopefully... Smithie

Thanks, mate. I kind of touch on the flipping cars thing in the next video. I think my focus has turned from flipping to more just saving cars from the scrapper and project cars. I still work too slowly and I go too deep to be any good at making a profit at it. I was only supposed to change the clutch on this car and ended up taking the engine out and restoring it all haha. Still aiming for the Aston, but might just have to get there a different route 👍🏻

Well done on your Mot, one or two things though...not being picky,just trying to help..... When you are working on your car, KEEP YOUR LEGS FROM UNDERNEATH... ..it frightens me everytime i see you do it. Re the banjo bolt "finger tight" and other bits you remove, put back.... Use a dab of paint, tippex, helpers nail varnish....as markers to show that they have been "torqued up" tightened etc...i own and maintain my own aeroplane so have got a rough idea..... Well done again. Hopefully onto next one soon 👍🤔😃

Thanks for the advice bud. It's a bad habit that I need to give up. Trust me - you're not the first person to leave a comment about my legs! I'm gonna try harder in the future as I do like my legs haha.

Get yourself a good set of 1/2 inch drive, impact drive six point sockets. These are the black ones that are not chromed. The chrome doesn't hold up well to the stresses of an impact driver. One day you will get yourself an impact driver to help get those rusty nuts off. Congratulations on all of your progress. As others have said, yes you should change the springs on both sides and I would have changed the shocks while I was in there BUT since the car passed the MOT they must be OK for now.

Thanks for the support, Mark. I'm definitely going to look at getting a set of six-point sockets - especially as all my projects look like they're going to be a bit old and corroded 👍🏻

minute 15: I told you so! It‘s like the one and only car driving like this, it‘s not scary fast but fast enough to generate fun per mile. Nice it passed finally! Enjoy man, maybe rethink the tips I gave you under the last video if there are some bucks over ;) Cheers!
