I have a mystery snail that is on its 5th day of being half out of the water up against the heater. Sometimes I find him angled 45 degrees as if resting his head on the heater, other times he's perfectly vertical, sometimes his foot is a bit more retracted, sometimes a bit more out and open, so he's definitely alive, but he hasn't moved from that spot for 5 days now. Which means he's not eating in all that time. I take care to pour water over him every hour or two to keep him wet, and put the lid on the tank tight overnight to maximize retained humidity when I can't be putting water on him. Most of the time when I pour water on him he doesn't react, even if a snail next to him does, but one time yesterday he definitely reacted. Lots of snails come by as if to check on him, sometimes even stay and hang out with him for a while, but he never responds to their presence. Sometimes a baby snail will even crawl on top of his shell, but since he's not moving, they can't use him for hitchhiking, so they don't stick around very long. LOL! But the most concerning thing about him is that he is an ivory snail, yet his shell has taken a slight reddish cast. Snail blood is blue, so that's not a blood-related issue, but I have no idea what it is. I have other ivories in the same tank that do not have any reddishness to them, this guy is the only one, and I assume it is indicative of something, but I can't find any useful information as to what. Oh, and a snail that is floating may be alive, but if it is floating upside down, it may not be alive much longer. A month ago I had a mystery snail that was floating upside down at the surface for 5 or 6 days before expiring. I believe just of old age. For most of that time she did have a slight off smell, but upon expiration, the smell was incredibly powerful, it'll knock your socks off. So if you think there might be a slight smell from your mystery snail, that's not death. At least, not yet.
@kunknown2340Ай бұрын
Did you ever find out what the issue was?
@sststrАй бұрын
Yes. It was a female that was trying to avoid being mated with. I very tragically discovered, by one time accidentally touching it, that her shell was completely calcium depleted, for the merest touch broke the shell into many pieces :( And then it died soon thereafter. Based on the baby mystery snails I got a week or two later, the problem was that it was laying too many eggs too quickly and not getting enough calcium along the way. So on the plus side, I did get a very large number of new ivory mysteries to carry on her legacy. But that is a very sad way for a snail to go. Not every time a lady snail is trying to avoid being mated with does that mean she is suffering extreme calcium deprivation, other causes are possible, like damage to the mantle. But calcium deficiency is definitely something to consider. I have since taken to adding a little bit of powdered calcium to the water once a week, for a 40g tank I do about a half teaspoon full. That seems to help - I've had some snails take a big fall out of the tank and survive with no obvious shell damage, which suggests some very strong shells now, but you need to be mindful of how that changes the hardness of your water, as that can affect whether or not they will mate. And if you have other critters in the tank besides, of course you need to consider their hardness requirements as well. When you start mixing and matching critters, it can get very complex to know what to do, but if it's just snails, adding calcium in small amounts to the water may be a useful thing to do. Note, that's in addition to have cuttlefish bones in the tank, and supplying them with calcium rich foods like Hikari crab cuisine - I try to get them calcium by every possible means! Haven't had another snail with a calcium deficiency since, so that's been encouraging.

My nerite snails are little escape artists. I do a snail check every morning now. I know for sure they've been out for over 24 hours, and I'm fairly certain one guy was out for 48 hours once. I have found the little suckers in some crazy places out of the tank, LOL 😆 If I hadn't already known, I prolly would have trashed them, thinking they were dead. They live out of water way longer then people would assume!

Right?! My wife would constantly find them in our kitchen since they smell out ozone and water ions... so they would crawl towards the sink, never making a gravity defying climb. But I had one we named "Cracky" who had crawled out over 30 times in 2 or 3 years...cracking his shell several times and turquoise shell tissue growing back in the cracks...he was pretty unique looking.

Ok, I found some normal outdoor snail months ago, a mom & 2 tiny babes. It was raining really bad for Days, I took all of them inside and gave them a Safe place in a big plastic container. The big one who was not even that big like Big snails, got out and I never could find her. But I kept the babies for a few months, fed them an they did fine. I started feeling bad cuz they were confined to a small space. So after weeks of pondering what to do ..... I put them outside in a safe spot under my shed. I only did this cuz of all the Info I got about how they need to Survive?? So, I assumed my baby snails would die, I let them go. But months later ........ like 4months later I find the Mom ALIVE on the side of a closed book where I was cleaning. Id looked Everywhere when she went missing!? After a few weeks I for sure thought she was dead!! She is now in my kitchen ....ALIVE and I feel AWFUL that Im sure her babies are dead cuz the wild animals leave snail shells in the water bowls all the time these days!! Live and Learn ..... life is so hard when you are an Empath!!

Hey alex (or anyone reading this :( ), panicked emergency question from a new crustacean keeper and I cannot find ANYTHING cohesive - none of it adds up for my situation entirely. I truly believed I had researched everything and covered every potential variable for a new tank/keeper. This is going to be long, but given that I constantly see threads asking for these details when people have questions like mine, I hope this can help with some clues: I just recently added some new plants and a big boi rabbit snail to my unfiltered planted fish tank (no co2 either, just regular 15% max water changes). At first, it seemed like everything was good. I had my yellow bee shrimp and rabbit snail in there for a few days and everyone was chillin'. I was VERY VERY careful to ensure my tank ph and levels matched the water the shrimp came with. I am extremely paranoid as I was terrified of hurting them. They aren't just cool animals to me, I named and was attached to all of them the second I brought them home (and yes, I can tell the difference between the new shrimp!). My snail was munching on the glass and my one bee shrimp was casually exploring the tank, eating algae discs, and generally being a cutie shrimpy boi. When I got three more shrimp yesterday along with the aforementioned plants (the guy at the aquarium supply assured me none were toxic to shrimp...but also didn't seem to recognize?), I VERY VERY slowly drip acclimated the new shrimp. I usually do it by hand, but I stay next to the tank as it is on my desk by my computer and I will add a few drops every 2 mins or so for oh, 3 hours or so as I do other tasks. As it gets past the second hour, I will start to space it out a bit longer and do it a tablespoon or so at a time and see how they react. Last night, however, I had the new plants so I added them to my tank. Some of which came floating back up due to the disturbances in the water (I like to put plants in odd crevices that still have access to the larger substrate bottom to root in) and one or two stems got a little smooshed from my tools repeatedly replacing them. I trimmed them and then promptly stuck them back into the black fluval substrate/silica sand. I DID notice that during this planting, a great deal of nasty material came up from the substrate (I usually vacuum over as opposed to into, as to not disrupt the sand or bacteria too much). This happened the day I got my initial snail and shrimp as well. I also added some root tabs with those TC plants (I bought them from an aquarist/planted tank shop on Etsy that claimed that the root tabs were snail and shrimp friendly..) but everyone seemed fine. Fast forward and I add my acclimated shrimp to my tank. One of my new shrimp starts flailing on the rocks below within minutes - okay, so it's just molting, right? But that is not a good sign straight away, and I do not get it bc my GH and PH were fine.. It molts successfully... then dies. A second, then third, then my final and first suffers this fate. The weird thing was, I removed the last one when it tried to swim but started sinking and put it in some fresh filtered remineralized RO water. My snail who was chillin' on the glass, began excessively defecating around this time. I removed him as well. Both immediately perked up and all seemed well. I waited several hours, and began drip acclimating. Within 20 mins, that shrimp went into a forced molt too (which I expected, it was not even able to swim), and despite the molt going without a hitch, it still couldn't swim right and seemed weak. Being new, I was not sure if this was normal or not. :/ I went to bed after observing a few more hours. I woke up, and my shrimp was completely dead, my snail was emitting an EMMENSE amount of white slime from its body and not moving. I took it out and put it on its side, smelled it, everything I was told to do and to my surprise, it came back. I decided to try something different, and use tap water instead in a completely fresh (but temp and ph comperable) change.. It has since stopped emitting that horrible stuff at the bottom of the tank and crawling around pathetically, and is now stuck to the glass near the waterline. Which, is this a problem as well? Please let me know what I have done wrong, here. :(
@NefariousSpineLizard2 жыл бұрын
I am terrified to put my last remaining baby into my tank again. If it was the tabs, what can I do? Or, if it was something toxic from a plant, would a water change (even an 80% one) even help? Woudn't the copper and the toxins remain in the substrate forever? I put so much love and heart into this tank. I would be devastated to rip it apart.
@Fishtory2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear all that. But my guess is disturbing the substrate and or adding root tabs caused an ammonia or nitrate spike ... which also could drop the ph and cause forced molts. If it's all settled down I'd test the ammonia, the nitrate nitrate and kh/gh or at least the tds to see If something spiked. The other possibility is that the plants had been through a copper dip or pesticide/de-snail compound... from the sound of mucus falling away from the snail, it sounds like that could be the culprit... or ammonia burn. Snails are really sturdy, so I'm guessing its a chemical If your parameters are normal...in which case you'll want to do water changes daily for a week or two and slide an activated carbon/charcoal filter pad on the tank on a hang off the back filter or canister filter...then toss it after 3 days and do another one for 3 to 5 days... this will clear up most any chemicals in the tank along with the daily 30 to 50% water change (if you think it's copper or a pesticide issue). Sorry to hear about the heartbreak and stress. Don't lose hope, it should be fixable for the future critters...but reintroduce them carefully and only one or two at a time to see If they do okay. Best of luck, Alex.

My new mystery snail has burrowed itself completely under the aqua soil substrate in my tank. After a few days I thought it may have been dead so I gently uncovered it. It is still alive and crawled around a bit before completely burying itself again. I have never seen this behavior in a mystery snail before. Is this normal? On a separate question how long or how many water changes should you wait before reintroducing snails back into the tank after using the product "No Planeria"?
@Fishtory10 ай бұрын
Its "normal" behavior...snails are strange organisms. Some just eat a whole bunch of algae wafer or left over fish food and then chill, diggesging and pooping in one spot for a few days or a week. Id wait 2 full water changes to put snails back in, ideally. Sometimes they survive no planaria just fine, but ive also seen it kill them in under an hour. So id jusf do 3 or 4 , 50% water changes .. one a day or so when you're done with the planaria killer

Hello Alexander Williamson! Thank you for doing this video! I just received a mystery snail from aquatic arts a couple days ago. I am new to mystery snails but have done research and am currently doing more. This little guy/girl is tight in its shell since in the shipping container, temperature acclimated and place him/her in it’s new home. Has not budged but is alive. No odor. I’ve read they can sleep for days, even a couple weeks? I also read recently they will hibernate if temp drops enough (maybe that’s more likely in nature than an aquarium). Interesting. Do you have an idea of how long I should give before I should get concerned? I was told by one source they may stay like this for a few days while getting use to new surroundings and parameters. I hope you are doing well with your recent surgery!
@Fishtory2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the well wishes, first off! I appreciate the sentiment. And yes, I've had them go in a shell for over a week... do frustrating lol. If it got cold while being shipped, it could have gone into "torpor" and warm tank water (over 72 Fahrenheit ) should wake it up eventually... maybe a piece of squash or cucumber will tempt it also. Sometimes they do get too hot while being shipped, so it's possible it died (pretty unlikely though)... just keep an eye on it, it may Even wake up at night and then hide in the day until it's comfy. Best of luck to you, let me know in a week if nothing has changed.

@@Fishtory I had the same question, thank you so much for this answer!! the heat was off in our apartment for a day or so due to winter weather and the tank got fairly cold. no smell, but my little nitrite snail hasn't moved in a few days so I was getting worried ): here's to hoping he's just in a false hibernation and will wake up soon!

9:17 Do you ever have to "Burp" a snail? For example, if you had snails shipped to you that have been out of the water for a while, do they need some help with the trapped air?
@zootederika6089 ай бұрын
i’m really worried.. i have 2 little goldfish and a guppy and i had one snail and he was doing great! but then i decided to get 2 more snails bc my tank is in need of more snails so i got 2 more of the same snail.. (unfortunately females but i wasn’t aware when purchasing) and they’re doing good but now the original snail i had went upside down and hasn’t moved.. i tried flipping him just in case he was maybe stuck but he hasn’t moved so i thought maybe he was resting but it’s been 2-3 days so im really concerned
@bunnyhunny022 Жыл бұрын
What if your snail has a trapdoor, but parts of its body are hanging out and it’s not moving? I did some tests to check if it’s dead but it doesn’t smell bad, it’s still heavy, I even slighty shook it to see if it would fall out of the shell but it hasn’t. I tried to do the light test as well, however the shell is too thick and I can’t tell if it’s dead

Is it holding on to the glass? If its dead within a day itll let go if so... otherwise its chillin usually

im worried about my mystery snail, her name is aquamarine and she is SUPER far back into her shell. she doesnt smell bad and her trapdoor is on, but shes way far back and won’t come out. i tried giving her an air bath and she didn’t even budge.

i think my snail might be dead but i don’t know?? my snail was on the side of the tank and hadn’t moved for a day or so (it’s only my third day of having him) and so i moved him (which now i know you’re not supposed to do oops) and i’m just waiting to see if he’ll move or not, i’ve had problems with pets i’ve bought from the petsmart i bought him from before (i bought 7 fish from there and they all died yet the ph balance of my water was fine) and i finally got a betta that has stayed alive (and he’s super happy) so we got him a friend snail but now i’m afraid the snail might be dead
@Fishtory Жыл бұрын
Just leave him a few days. Bettas will breath air if the water goes foul luckily. But im sorry if the snail is not doing well. Slightly pushing on them is fine...you just dont want to yank them if theyre on there really good. Usually they wont hold on at all, id dead

@bellachan777 Жыл бұрын
Idk if my snail is okay, but he falls off the glass onto the bottom of the tank and goes in and out of his shell finally staying partially out of his shell. After he looks like the healthiest snail in the tank. I think he might be dying.

Could just be warm temps. But you may be running the water a bit softer than before also. The slime is a response to kh/gh or salinity largely

They sleep up to a week, especially if they got a cold water change, or the nitrates went up too high...so try a 78 or 80 degree water change and a few slices of poached squash or cucumbers...and turn the lights out. .j bet they wake up.

Apple snails tuck themselves tight up into their shell to protect themselves then die and they smell putrid
@siiil2111 ай бұрын
My apple snail has been in its shell on the bottom of my aquarium floor for 3 days now.. (or more) after i put food next to it.. or against its shell door , it did move about 5cm or 2inches away in the past 3 days (it did not eat the food) . its laying sideways. i think its alive.. because it seems to move the door every 4ish hours but it has never ever been this inactive, and i don't know what i should do. my fish tank is crystal clear. i have not done almost any water changes for 5 months and if i have , its has been very minimal 5-10% max because all the tests show OK results. reasons for adding water = evaporation or because i was cutting a ton of overgrown Limnophila sessiliflora that plant seems to be on steroids .

Is the room or tank colder than normal? That's all i can really imagine it being, short of the snail just being a lazy snail

BIG thankyou for the response. @@Fishtory . the outside temp has been fluctuating from -10 to +4 ish Celsius (14° F to 41° F ) therefore my apartment buildings heating also has been all over the place in the past month . the Snail continues to be inactive (mostly) , however moving around a very small amount per 24H. compared to how it used to be.. when it NEVER stopped moving. mountain climbing, water diving, around the world traveling 24/7 it really liked to climb as high as it could and than faceplant to the bottom.
