guys WINDOWS exist. If Apple will not give you what you want, you can find all of it in WINDOWS 2in1 laptops,(which are amazing btw). This is what I am doing. Fck Apple. Its not like thats the only company in the world. Just get a HP Spectre 360x or alike, its super amazing, and better than anything apple has to offer. There are options, but they are outside apples walled garden, which is good, since the garden is filled with fieces lately.

heres the problem with what you are saying. MacBook Pro is a piece of garbage that has no touchscreen in 2024. That is the problem. People would leave iPad alone, if and only if - macbook pro had the same technology and hardware ipad has. Actually ipad is way more advanced hardware vise than the mac. So - if one wants to stay in apples ecosystem, he has to accept inferiour products - either inferiour ipad with amazing hardware but horrible software, or inferiour mac with amazing software but horrible hardware (no touchscreen no pen). THIS IS for people that WANT and NEED a powerfull touchscreen laptop with a pen. For that group of users - APPLE has nothing to offer. And this is why we are pissed (me included) . SOLUTION? GO WINDOWS. jump ship, go to windows heaven, and you will find things have changed so much in the WINDOWS world. Acutally, windows today is way easier, more advanced, packed with features and software, and just better in every way than bot mac and especcially the garbage toy ipad os. so that is it. NO, there is no product in apple’s lineup for me. Literally, after being a 20years Apple user, 15 of which on a Mac, and last 3 ipad only, I have realised, Apple has nothing for me anymore. Apple is simply not offering a product for me (and you are defending them, not realizing I exist), which really means, I have to pack up, and get my business elsewhere, and this is in the incredibly powerful and polished land of Satia Nadellas Microsoft, which is indeed amazing. so yeah. Just understand that people like me exit, and that for us Apple has nothing to offer. That is why we ask iPad to do more, because, it is either that, or leave apple altogether. We prefer to stay, but apple prefers we leave. So we will . Leave.
As a music producer, the iPad 2 was the first piece of tech that truly allowed me to bring my music ideas to life. I was 12 and had dabbled with my parents laptop and Audacity, but the learning curve was just too high for me, not to mention the extra gear I’d have to purchase like an audio interface, mics or VSTs, plugins etc. The iPad had everything in this one $5 app called GarageBand. The mic was awful, but wow-I had an entire band and more available at my fingertips. It truly opened a huge door for me and was the entry point for me to dive deeper into production. Today, I now use a (2021?) MacBook Pro for the majority of my music production, but I still use my iPad 8 for music too. They serve different purposes. The MacBook is the main machine for recording and laying down tracks, mixing, it’s just a better UI for that IMO. The iPad allows me to do some really cool experimental stuff with different synthesizer apps and modulation apps, and its touch interface basically turns it into another musical instrument. While id love to buy a ton of hardware synths, the iPad has tons and tons of unique music making apps that are very affordable. To your point, they’re different pieces of technology that serve different purposes. I love them both! Great vid, Austin :)

I agree with you to some extent, but as someone who works in academia and have seen a lot of students in the university, having a laptop is simply a requirement due to iPadOS’s limitations, and iPad is mostly served as a companion device for note taking, Netflix, all other light usages. It would be very nice for them to not needing to buy two devices and only need one device (For many students that might be fine, but some don’t have the budget). I had seen students coming to the college with only iPad only to find out that they can’t really do much with it as a lot of softwares does not exist in IPadOS, and they still need to buy a laptop. I don’t think Apple needs to put macOS on iPad and they definitely won’t even though technically it is not that hard as they are based on the same chip architecture, but that does not mean they can’t improve the experience of the iPad further for more intense work such as programming, easier way for developers to port desktop apps to iPad, and overall more flexible. Yes, for many people iPads is sufficient as their primary computing devices if they are doing light tasks (I know there are some amazing apps for video editing, 3d works, but most people doesn’t really use that), but then iPads 5 years ago are equally sufficient for them. I like my iPad, but every time I see my iPad with such a beautiful display and the chip being so powerful, just that i can’t achieve most my work with it is really a shame.

I've been using Macs since the original in 1984, and I've been using iPads since the original in 2010. Even after all these years, the iPad is mostly a secondary device for me, maybe because the Mac is such a comfortable, familiar place for me after using it for over 40 years. The one area in which the iPad has turned out to be my primary device is for drawing, mainly using Procreate. Nothing I've used on or with the Mac-Wacom tablets, Cintiqs, etc., Photoshop, Painter, etc.-has been as satisfying or efficient as drawing on the iPad. On the other hand, I'm a type designer, and all the best tools for that are on the Mac. There's no reason why they couldn't exist on the iPad, but except for a few simplistic font editors, they don't (at least not yet).
@uncoverage7 ай бұрын
First, I'm fascinated by the idea that there aren't any good type design apps for iPad - you'd think it would be a great medium for that use case. The question that immediately comes to mind is "why?" I'd bet that it's a marketing/business model issue, which certainly falls in Apple's lap when it comes to responsibility. They haven't fostered a healthy enough third-party software ecosystem to justify great, niche pro apps on the iPad that could really make it a sticky and indispensable computing platform - which is not a technology issue at its core, but a relationship and business one. Also, drop a link for some of your type if you can!! I'd love to check it out :)

@@uncoverage As far as I can tell, there are three reasons. First, the market for font editors apps is tiny. There are probably less than a thousand people worldwide who make a significant part of their income from designing typefaces, followed by a much larger group who make supplemental income or are just doing it as a hobby. Sort of like trying to make a living as a rock musician. The second reason may be that designing a font requires the precision of a mouse. I spend a lot of time making very small, precise adjustments, a lot of it with the arrow keys + modifiers. The Apple Pencil, while close, is not quite as precise. Third, installing and testing fonts on an iPad is quite a bit more involved than on a Mac, and most of the market for fonts is on desktop computers, so it kind of makes more sense to develop on the same kind of computer that the fonts will be used on. The most popular font making app on the Mac is Glyphs (glyphsapp.com). People ask the developer frequently about porting Glyphs to the iPad. But the development team is small and is already spread thin just maintaining the Mac version. It also depends on things like Python scripting for plugins and automation, which probably wouldn't be allowed by the App Store. So, it's not as simple and straightforward as it seems. I think it's possible that someone could make a tool that would allow certain parts of the font development process to happen on an iPad, for instance the drawing and design part, but it hasn't happened yet. FYI, marksimonson.com.

Absolutely aagree with you on the short comings of iPad. I had at least 3 iPads and they all ended up as media consumption or form filling for clients and interviews. And your last video makes a lot of sense as I am watching your content on Apple vision, pro and typing without voice recognition is ridiculously hard.

it's interesting to me that some people see iPads "just" being a consumption device as a failure. to me, that's a totally valid use case for a device like an iPad! do you feel disappointed that you don't have a use for the iPads that is more robust?

This for artist/illustrator like me. Even though using an ipad is much easier and simplier than a mac lets not forget that using an ipad pro is much more expensive in the long run because most of the apps in ipad os are subscription base. In mac I can buy clip studio paint or Final cut pro stand alone software. There are many more software ucsnt use in ipad such as blender, tv paint, cinema4d, photoshop, pureref and many more.

Very good talk , completely agree with the analysis, we need app more capable, the Apple app are too limited for exemple … Why I can’t select all a search result in Mail app ? I am bored by all these people complaining about iPadOS, sure it can evolve… we will see the news in one month at the WWDC, but the innovative of the UI of the iPadOS is refreshing, fun and efficient, just the app , for a lot of them are limited for no reasons. And we need an iPadOS version of Xcode and the terminal … I was coding the Mac toolbox on a Mac SE 30 35 years before on a 512x384 display !!! I like a lot your video, your talk and analysis … Continue these interesting brainstormings

If the new hardware is pointless then every future update of hardware is pointless. To a jaded multi millionaire youtube tech reviewer who can afford to buy every updated piece of tech Apple/Samsung releases It's pointless. I have a iPad pro 2021 11 inch M1. I want to upgrade to a iPad pro 2024 OLED 13 inch M4 . I can't wait.

that’s very true - people forget that not everyone gets every product!! i also think that the tech sphere is generally mad that not every device can be everything for them. i generally don’t get that sentiment, since every product is a series of compromises. it follows, then, that if you cram two products into a device, you make the compromises of two products!!

@@uncoverage "not every device can be everything for them" Exactly. Apple/Samsung will get there in the end. It's just a matter of time. The base level iPad will be like an ipad pro and the top spec iPad tablet will be more powerful than a Mac Pro with Mac os capabilities. I am stating the obvious & every knows it. I suppose a bit of pressure on Apple from the usual suspects can do no harm 😁

But why defend apple? How do you know having macOS will ruin the experience or make it “heavy”? Why are you ok with people having a purposefully gimped device they payed top dollars for, even more than a freaking MacBook? If I’m paying more or equal money of a Mac, and have the same freaking hardware, then I would want the choice of having the os I want. This argument is so ridiculous. Like as if apple needs defending, and that they are completely incapable of bringing best of both worlds on an iPad. I’m sure they can have iPad os and macOS able to exist on iPad, they obviously don’t want to.
