A dear friend buys Coconut oil for my kitchen every time she visits from California. I live in the Mediterranean. With all this oil around, I began using it as a hand and foot moisturizer as I hate to have it wasted.

So for diabetics, they certainly should lower carbs intake as much as possible. And if they cut down fat as the doctor suggested, what do they eat? Protein is the only thing left but you know you cannot do protein too much neither.

For arthritis he should try never to have more that one nightshade at a time. Nightshades are plants that include tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines, capsicums and chilli peppers (tobacco is also a nightshade). I have found that having a meal which includes two or more of these can cause arthritis to flare - although I can have just a baked potato with beans and be fine or just a little canned tomato incorporated into a pasta sauce ; however that is just me - maybe try eliminating them altogether and then reintroducing slowly, one at a time to see what happens.

Never heard such bad advise from a doctor! This Dr. Bernard is clueless when it comes to healthy fats. I have been on a Keto diet for 3 years where avocados and olive oil are a staple with every meal. My recent lipid panel, while reflecting high levels of overall cholesterol, my HDL is the highest I’ve ever had and my triglycerides were the lowest they have ever had. I did a NMR Lipoprotein panel and my level of small dense LDL particles was less than 2%. Besides all that my blood sugar (A1C) is the lowest I’ve ever had (5.4). Sure hope no one is listening to Dr. Neal Bernhardt when it comes to healthy diets.

This doctor seems to be out of touch with pretty much every medical study on PubMed which has shown positive benefits for Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It needs to be Extra Virgin not regular Olive Oil to provide the most benefit. Yes it has fat but it also has polyphenols and rich in antioxidants. It is a staple of the Mediterranean diet which is highly recommended by many doctors and longevity experts. If this doctor is not aware of something as basic as this I am not sure I trust his other medical advice.

Thanks for this service. Dr Barnard is a gem. We appreciate Dean Ornish’s contribution to our understanding about CVD issues, but why is Nathan Pritikin never mentioned? He was possibly the first to reverse heart disease when he was told repeatedly that reversal was impossible, and included exercise when advised not to because it would probably kill him. We also owe a lot of our knowledge to him and many owe increased life in years and health to him. He also funded his study himself because no one else would fund such “impossible” ideas. I find it sad that he is given little/no credit these days.
@gardenofeels6872
@gardenofeels6872 2 жыл бұрын
The reason Pritikin is rarely mentioned by vegans is because he developed two different types of cancer at a relatively young age on a low -fat vegan diet. He ended up killing himself because of the pain of the cancers. I would hardly call that a good example of great health on a vegan diet. He is the last person advocates of a low-fat vegan diet want to talk about.
@vc6601
@vc6601 2 жыл бұрын
@@gardenofeels6872 Yes, he did develop cancer, but as I understand it the cancer was due to exposure to certain chemicals during the war. None of the vegan doctors ever say that a healthy vegan diet will protect from all ills, just reduce the risk.
@citadelofwinds1564
@citadelofwinds1564 2 жыл бұрын
@@gardenofeels6872 , Pritikin did not develop the cancers because of a vegan diet, but despite it. I suspect the problem was that it wasn't a whole foods diet but relied heavily on processed foods. I tried the diet years ago and so many recipes contained canned this and canned that, so the diet was frankly nutritionally deficient - especially their extreme, ultra low calories version. Since then, it's been recognised that refined and processed foods are a problem whether people are omnivores, keto or vegan followers. So the key is to eat the majority of foods whole or minimally processed, and include enough fresh produce. If Pritikin was relying on too much processed foods, he wasn't getting enough of the protective factors from fruit and vegs. He was a pioneer, finding his way, and that means making mistakes. Later researchers and vegan proponents have learned from these mistakes, and these days the best sources urge people to minimise processed foods.
@gardenofeels6872
@gardenofeels6872 2 жыл бұрын
@@citadelofwinds1564 I never said Pritikin got cancer because of the vegan diet, but it surely did not protect him from cancer either. I remember seeing interviews he did and he claimed to eat a pretty much whole foods plant diet. He was especially fond of whole grains. But his main claim to fame was the miniscule amount of fat in the diet he recommended. Neither you nor I really know how much processed foods he ate as opposed to whole foods. We only have his words and his books. His recipes weren't necessarily what he was eating himself, but rather an attempt to make his diet easier to follow. All we can do is speculate. One thing I do know. Fat is a very important macro nutrient, and your immune system will ultimately fail with too little of it. That is one of the reasons for the high vegan failure rate.
@panes840
@panes840 2 жыл бұрын
@@gardenofeels6872 cancer is caused by multi environmental variables that can switch on or off a gene. Fat is important but it's not that important. An apple contains saturated fat so does a lettuce but the amounts are miniscule. You don't actually need very much even when keeping calorie density low. So by avoiding high calorie density foods you can get enough to ensure hormones function properly.

Annie - what about taking a baby aspirin everyday to help prevent a brain clot - ? I had a coronary artery stent put in four months ago and I take Plavix in the morning and a baby aspirin in the evening to help prevent clots - I think it's a smart idea if we have a higher chance of getting clots. Also, you can stimulate Nitric Oxide in the blood to help keep the endothelial layer of blood vessels healthier thus reducing chances of a clot. You can research this, if you want.

Eat some nuts but eat then raw since roasting changes the fats and use the olive while skipping the oil as it is concentrated from more olives than you would eat normally. This is the healthier option and still gives you a moderate amount of fat.

What about the affect on the liver? Should these oils be avoided or at least minimal use? It's so confusing because we get told we need healthy fats but then in the cirrhosis groups we're told no fats even the healthy fats. So frustrating!
@eatplantsloveanimals

The only healthy fats you need are the essential fats -- ie, omega 3 & 6 which come from plants. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying or ignorant. Your body is perfectly capable of making other kinds of fats, you don't need to consume them from oil or animals. The animals make fats from the plants they eat. You don't need to consume them from animals because you are an animal that can also make fats.

BS. So what is the effect of olive oil on FMD? All oils, both animal and plant derived, tend to worsen endothelial function. Within hours of ingesting fat, arteries stiffen and the ability to dilate is impaired. A 1999 study measuring FMD after the ingestion of high-fat meals reported a “three-hour decline in FMD after subjects ingested a traditional meal of a hamburger and fries or cheesecake. Olive oil was found to have the same impairment to endothelial function as the rest of these high-fat meals.” And a 2007 study showed a similar detrimental effect on endothelial function after the intake of olive, soybean, and palm oils.

The problem with olive oil is that most of it isn't REAL olive oil, but mixed with other oils. People don't get fat on oils, they get fat on sugar and other simple carbohydrates. Pure, quality olive oil is healthy. Cod liver oil is healthy. Wheat germ oil is healthy. Flax seed oil is healthy. Many vitamins (A, D, E, K2) are FAT SOLUBLE vitamins, which means no fat then no absorption / assimilation of these nutrients. Blood cholesterol is not a huge predictor of heart disease. These doctors get all revved up on stuff they really know little about.

Dying at young ages due to lack of knowledge. So many wild foods too that are extremely important on the grounds of our Earth with things God is giving us. We don't know if it's poisonous are very nutritious. They are finding out which plants we can eat and can survive if there is no electricity or an attack. We need to learn more

@@tvsma no, it's not in comparison to others who are overweight and out of shape. I study fitness, health, diet & especially geriatric fitness/health/diet, so this observation is not based on 'what I'm used to seeing in overweight men, then comparing those observations to Dr.. Barnard's appearance- though your idea of how healthy Dr. Bernard looks may indeed be based in what YOU are used to seeing when YOU look around. You may be equating skinny = good health? Think again. Dr Barnard looks like he could be knocked over with a feather, i.e. little to no muscle mass. His face is gaunt, his neck pencil thin, his shoulder frame under that shirt looks, to me, very frail, i.e., no body fat, little to no muscle mass. This is a dangerous state to be in in the 60's, 70's 80's age groups. (sarcopenia looms large bc of lack of quality protein in the diet, as well as healthy fats - combine that lack with little to no strength (resistence) training and it's a recipe for disaster. Just as carrying an excess of fat can be unhealthy, a marked absence of fat (and muscle mass -[ I'm talking about skeletal muscle that keeps our frame upright and mobile in older age] can be equally as unhealthy as obesity AND metabolically as well. Muscle is a metabolic organ that sends biochemical signals throughout the body's cells, internal organs, mitochondria, etc. - muscle is not just some pretty structure that creates curves and makes us look and act strong. Skeletal muscle, especially, is extremely important to maintain in older age. And muscle needs increased complete protein (over the outdated RDA) as we age because after the age of 25-30 we no longer have an abundance of HGH and other hypertrophic hormones to support our muscular health/structure. So, thee idea of remaining metabolically healthy cannot be based simply on lowering our fat intake and ignoring our increased protein needs for muscle maintenance and health. It all ties in together, in one big metabolic package. Take a look at Dr. Andrew Weil - a year older than Dr. Barnard. He (whom I understand follows the Mediterranian diet and incorporates animal protein & healthy fats in his diet) - compare how the two look side by side - which one would you want to be standing next to in an emergency, or physical threat, that would take swift action and a good measure of pure physical strength & energy to help you overcome the emergency/threat? I'd vote for Dr. Andrew Weil, any day.
