While watching your video I felt like laughing, and crying. I love opera, and I am disabled. Singing helps alleviate my pain. Thank you so much for this 🙏

Thanks so much to you and Jacqueline (and Borb, who was obviously in very deep thought throughout!) for this very important discussion about disability, opera, and its intersection... Happy WOD, enjoy TATWD, and DFTBA! 💙

I'm an aspiring director and your content is so helpful since ableism isn't given much thought in the scene. Thanks for putting in all this work.

Robin, I have followed your channel for a long time now, and LOVE your content! Thanks so much for this video. As a blind opera singer who's about to graduate from University (I have a Bachelors, Masters, and am about to have an Artist Diploma in Voice Performance), and having done a few professional auditions, I can relate to so much of what you and Jackie talk about here! All the best! Maddie

Do you have any tips for releasing jaw tension when singing? I think the muscles in my jaw compensate for the jaw hyper extension by tensing and either jutting my jaw forward or putting a ton of pressure on my vocal chords. I think it really adds to the inconsistency with my voice. My vocal teacher would have me sing upside down but I can’t exactly do that when I perform

During the offseason, opera singers should drive around in ice cream trucks and instead of using the traditional ice cream truck music box, they should sing out the window to let everyone know they are coming. Then when kids buy ice cream, they can give free voice lessons along with it.

Hi Jacqui and Borb! Also, can we talk about voice teachers who charge lots extra when you aren't able to attend lessons at the exact same time every week or have to reschedule due to illness being a major problem and ableist af?

See, I have complicated feelings on this! While I agree that punishing or shaming people for listening to their body's needs is Very Bad Indeed, as a private voice teacher myself for whom the amount I can teach is limited by by chronic illness, I REALLY feel it if one of my students cancels on me on late notice. Because of this pattern, I had to start a 24-hour cancellation fee in my studio, costing half the amount of the lesson, because losing that one lesson can really affect my income per month - being disabled, as you know, is expensive AF, and running your own business does not always a consistent income make! That said, I always let my students know immediately on entering my studio that this policy exists, and why - transparency is key here! I think the tl;dr is that I agree in theory, I just think a few caveats need to be added: a) I think there's a reasonable amount to charge for a late cancellation if the coach's income and security can be affected by inconsistent student attendance, and b) sometimes those teachers are disabled too, and that could be WHY teaching is a major source of income! Thank you for coming to my TedTalk :P
