in the first princess diaries movie, when mia is learning princess manners, the soundtrack is an instrumental version of non piu mesta from la cenerentola. the recent batman movie uses a tiny snatch of the end of dido's lament at the beginning of the funeral scene (hard to spot, it seques directly into ave maria). there was a show my sibs used to watch called dino dan and in one episode the teacher was singing along to il vecchiotto cerca moglie from the barber of seville. captain america features an opera snippet i don't know which but it's sung by jon vickers. and my dad watches this show frasier thats constantly setting off my opera senses and i have to go investigate :\ thats all i can think of off the top of my head.

Also, if I recall correctly, a bit of the William Tell Overture is in both Princess Diaries.

I'm a medievalist specialised in Arthurian literature. Excalibur is a guilty pleasure of mine, as it's seen as a rather stupid movie by academics.

Here's another one I juuuust thought about: Joyeux Noël/Merry Christmas. Featured rather heavily and sort of trigger to the plot.

I love old movies, and this one is specifically more for opera fans, but I enjoyed "The Great Caruso" with Mario Lanza! It's not the most accurate history of Caruso's life, but Lanza is amazing and there are so many fantastic performances throughout! On the other end of the spectrum (worst opera representation in film), I finally watched The Greatest Showman recently and was in stitches when the famous "opera singer", Jenny Lind, comes out to sing for the first time and sings basically a musical theatre/pop song to an opera house full of ball gowns and tuxedos!! Don't get me wrong, it was still a killer song, but just hilarious that it was being portrayed as "opera"...

Hey, Anna! Uncle Tom and I so enjoyed this video with your commentary! One of our favorite movies with a lot of operatic "bits" is Amadeus; we also saw The Father the other night, starring Anthony Hopkins. His character listens intently to opera. I'd love to know how what his listens to connects with his Alzheimers struggle. Anyway, thanks for the informative & entertaining video here. We'll tune in again soon! xoxoxo Aunt Lisa

I love this comment! I want to do like a FULL Amadeus reaction vlog one day...there's just so much! I don't know The Father, i'll have to check it out , because it sounds really interesting! There's lots of work being done in music therapy for people with Alzheimers and similar. So glad you enjoyed the video! xxx

One of my favorites was in “Life is Beautiful” and he goes to the opera and sees the woman he loves. He keeps hoping she’ll turn around and Offenbach’s “Les Contes d’Hoffmann” plays. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWWoXqyYYpaSfKM

Other suggestion: Quantum of Solace features Tosca. You could also do a video about opera in novels. Deon Meyer mentions it fairly often. On a side note I'm an aspiring crime writer and the main character of one of my stories is the son of a soprano and a Mozart loving cop. I've written a short story where opera is the central point.

How about “Moonstruck.” In the story the Nicholas Cage character is enamored with opera and asks Cher to go on one final date with him to see “La Boheme” at the Met. The opera is actually woven very cleverly into the plot of the movie.
@ludovico68902 жыл бұрын
@@lasalleman6792 Just saw your comment, thank you. Working on it now, it's being edited. But it'll take a while until it's published. I've also written a longish short story where opera is heavily featured, based on some anecdotes from my former opera teacher. I'll try to see what I can do with it, have it published online or something.

Opera has been ALWAYS mainstream, it is a mainstream genre involving all classes.
@operaanna2 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree that it involves all the classes and that it was 'mainstream' at one time (if that term can even be applied to when it first appeared and developed), the breadth of listeners can't be compared to those of Top 40/Rock/etc. Those are the things I would define as mainstream, which I don't think opera is. And I'm totally fine with that, btw! But I do think it's given a bad name/stereotype most of the time that keeps new listeners from being able to enjoy and appreciate it.
@lolapanola2822 жыл бұрын
@@operaanna I was referring to the time before the tech sound reproduction (basically when Opera ended), let's say historical. At the beginning Opera was just an expensive form of art for rich and nobles, just for Italian princes in their courts, but then, thanks to its striking success it spread to all classes and began the most rewarding show in term of money for theatres and so it stayed for almost 3 centuries. It spread abroad outside Italy too and became a gold mine for impresarios. In the XIX century everybody went to Opera, from the low classes to upper classes in the gallery box. In the XVIII century was pretty much the same. So that is why I said "mainstream"
@operaanna2 жыл бұрын
@@lolapanola282 Right, I totally agree with that! I think from the time that 'technology' got involved, it's been out of what I would define as mainstream. i think it's *meant* for everyone, but is viewed as elitist nowadays, unfortunately.

im a rocker and love classical music and i listen to opera arias every day before i do my daily work. opera inspire groups like pink floyd, genesis, procol harem, the moody blues. the ones that dont like opera are people that dont realize music is derived from early classic music.
