Chain Lightning has received two buffs recently: one that reduced the damage dropoff per jump from 15% to 10%, and now another that reduced its mana cost from 120 to 110. It's still no Frost Nova, but Chain Lightning feels a lot more respectable now. Feral Spirit being more expensive is painful in the early game, though. It used to be that you'd aggressively level up your second hero (TC) by creeping, while the farseer harassed the enemy. All the exp would go to your second and third hero, and you were happy to stay at level 3 with Farseer because he gained very little from levelling up his skills. Earthquake is still bad, but hopefully high level Farseer isn't quite so bad now thanks to a stronger Chain Lightning.

It might not be as devastating as undead single target nuking power but the chain lightning + shockwave combo seems really powerful now. Games like this make me wish WC3 had more detailed stats so you could for example see the exact breakdown of how much damage your units and spells did because it really felt like the nukes were carrying this match.

@@Nuvizzle I agree, the spells did carry the match, but that's also due to the choices Grubby made this game. Grubby could have invested into tier 3 tech, into the Berserker upgrade for Headhunters, into the Burning Oil upgrade for his Demolishers, into the War Drums upgrade for his Kodos, and into ranged attack upgrades, but he got none of those. You are going to have to rely more on your spells if you don't invest into having strong army units.

I missed the fireball upgrade of catapults. That one is the best in looks as well as effects. Fireballs flying around here and there.

Yeah he held Grubby to a more than a few nail biting engagements there. I'm not entirely sure when the game tipped towards Grubby to be honest. It was close.

Probably because of upkeep. Keeping a small army allows you to mine more gold over time. Once you go over 50 cost then you move into low upkeep lowering the amount of gold your workers mine. Grubby explains upkeep management in some of his games every now and then.

A Human army is extremely cost effective and self sufficient with archmage brilliance aura + priests. He just has to not carelessly lose units, which is relatively easy against orc because they have no frost nova, entangle, or storm bolt to lock down and heavily damage one unit, and you have to be very careful with raiders against mass rifles because they'll die so fast they might not even be able to ensnare anything. He can back off and heal everything up with priests for free and wait for more MK mana, meanwhile Grubby has to spend gold to heal his units and restore hero mana, plus the resources to replace headhunters that die to storm bolt which is basically unavoidable.

Well, upkeep is one. If the human player isn't going into upkeep and is staying on 1 base, Grubby's income advantage isn't that large, and units were being retained pretty well. The human player likely also expanded much earlier than Grubby scouted it. He didn't scout the actual expand location for like 5-6 minutes, and it was up for at least a full minute (likely longer) before it got scouted (It was almost certainly already placed or completed when the Human army moved to the center of the map to attack the 2nd base from the top at ~18:35, and Grubby didn't scout it until ~22:25 (the previous scout at that location was ~16:00). He didn't click the goldmine, so it's unclear exactly how long it was up.

I am a Brood War fan and know next to nothing about Warcraft 3, but it seems to be a no-brainer that an expansion build would be able to out compete a build that does not expand. What are the downsides associated with expanding, and why do they outweigh the economic benefits?

Expansions have an extremely high upfront cost in WC3 in terms of gold, lumber, and the health and mana you have to spend clearing the medium creep camp that defends every expansion location. WC3 maps also don't feature natural expansions - you can't protect both your main base and your expansion with a single walloff. Between all that, you'll generally get run over when trying to expand early.

If you can defend it, it's safe. Most players just tech too quickly and that cost leaves them unable to quickly punish a fast expand opponent, nor do they scout well, so it's usually pretty safe to fast expand.

If you do that you lose a lot of tempo and grubby had to keep the pressure on. You can see he even sold his items to make gold in order to buy more healing scrolls, so wasting money in T3 and tech wasn't going to do anything for him

If you play enough nail-biting War3, you'll find yourself doing it too. You need a lot of oxygen to power your brain and fingers at the overclocked speed it takes for maintained intensive micro, and you also need to be able to do that breathing smoothly with as little effort as you can. Panting is inefficient and messes with your ryrhem and calm, so frogmouth is a nessesity.

I think that chain lightening improved the scaling of farseer. Also maybe grubby should focus on sending the stealthed wolves to enemy base to kill peasents and bring down expansions instead of advancing them toward enemy army where they get negated by priests

Nobody likes the Reforged graphics, they look ugly and make it harder to tell what's going on in the game. They were designed by someone who doesn't know how to design models for an RTS view.

The new graphics are maybe suited for RPG campaigns/maps with less amounts of units (or risk fps drop, lacking clarity of vision). But even then, polished classic gfx (like classic+) are more appreciated by most players. You don't want to lose those great designs of old, so basically they should've just copied what they did with the Starcraft rework. Upscaling, polishing, refining.

I would love to see you play against better opponents. No way in the old school meta you would not block your base and have a defensive mana burn tower as human vs FS or BM. ESPECIALLY if you are doing a timing push off of one base. He asked for those 1 million peasant backstab kills. I mean - it s okay to lose to superior game sense/micro. Not okay to lose to beginner mistakes like these vs Grubby, what the hell.

My biggest wish for Grubby is that Blizzard releases a Warcraft 4, a new Warcraft RTS someday. Imagine the hype. WoW is fine, and I love playing it, but a new RTS would be a biiig nostalgia hit for me personally.
