E.T. was definitely a steaming pile, but I think most of the hate came from the fact that it was ridiculously over-hyped, but turned out to be a rush-job with bad controls, and after so many bad games flooding the market, people just had enough. I agree about the beauty of a good game manual - it's like the difference of an LP record vs a digital download. The LP (often) had some great art and the liner notes with info and lyrics and whatnot - a soulless mp4 on its own just can't match the *experience* of an album... And yeah, for 2600 games, you often _needed_ the manual since the graphics were so blocky, and game RAM so limited you couldn't put the story directly in the game. A good manual though really makes those squares and boops come to life. Oh yeah, game suggestion: Good - River Raid, it's Fantastic Voyage but actually fun. Bad - Freeway aka "Frogger, but you got it from Wish". Some of the best and worst Activision had to offer...

Thanks for watching! Part of this that has been beyond enjoyable is getting to dig into the manuals for the games and how incredible some of them are. How some of them went the route of creating entire short stories for the story bit of the manuals; it has been really really awesome to get to read through those. So many cool programmers that have done some incredible stuff on a console that limited them in such restrictive ways. It's really all made doing this that much more enjoyable.
