Is Paqoe Pausing in Silent Clubstep CHEATING?

Recently on Twitter, someone sparked a conversation revolving around Paqoe's verification of Silent Clubstep arguing that because of the pausing that Paqoe did in the last memory part of the level, her record should not be considered legit. In this video, I attack that point and prove it completely wrong. Watch until the end to find out why Paqoe is legit.

It just happens because the game gets more frames to calculate the events in the game more precisely (and therefore, an even number of frames on 60hz can become an odd number of frames on something like 144hz.) tl,dr: it's probably just an oversight.

I have a different take on this than a lot of people. I don't think that pausing is cheating, especially with how it's implemented in the game and how the community accepts it. When I thought about it for a while though, I really do think pausing is detrimental to a playstyle. A large part of GD is related to spontaneous stamina and accuracy - which pausing makes much easier. BTW when I say pausing here I don't mean the ability to pause. Pausing to mute discord or use the restroom for a moment is fine. Pausing as a STRATEGY for playing the game is what I have a problem with. GD is a one - not two - button game. I've always thought this, so I'm not saying this to invalidate Paqoe's verification. I was in the osu/quaver community while people talked about this there, and I held the same position. Imagine this: A professional first-person singleplayer shooter player is pulling off all of the hardest sequential moves and trickshots in the game. No doubt, this is the hardest thing that's ever been accomplished. At the end, the player pauses repeatedly to line up the final 360. Is this cheating? No. Does the game allow this? Yes. Then how should we deal with this? Honestly I have no freaking clue. I want the community to discuss something like this in a level-headed manner if they see my point, but right now people are very reflexive about this topic (which I can somewhat understand given how this sparked with a top verification). Pausing counting as cheating depends on the game tbh. In geometry dash a game where you click one button over and over with timings, your stamina isn't gonna deplete so it's fair, I'd say pausing then watching a youtube tutorial for a memory part is cheating but if you have memorised it yourself (Paqoe did) then it's fine to pause. Whereas in rhythm games pausing defeats charts designed for you to need a lot of stamina, especially when it's loads of streams, jacks and also especially in mobile rhythm games where there is a lot of hand movement. That's when I'd consider pausing cheating (unless you paused due to getting an injury despite being on a chart with those styles) but that's just my take

I'm from the celeste community which has a completly deiffent view on pausing or pause buffering. The way that the pause menu in gd works means that when you u pause it is very hard to do an input of the first frame of unpasing and then pausing again (which is how you pause buffer) using pausing to go frame by frame complenty invalidates any challenge as you cna just copy the tas/bot inputs. Gd pausing makes this impossible so here I think it's fine.

As pausing is an feature from the game itself, one that does not require any additional tools or software, it's not cheating. Paqoe's use of the pause feature was not illegitimate and the verification is still legit. However, the way the pause feature was used, if not abused, to make the game easier in a way kind of undermines how the game is supposed to be played. So while it is legitimate, it was a rather dishonorable way of playing. Paqoe's verification is legit but used rather dishonorable techniques

The fact that this is controversial is just plain stupid. Anyone who says she “exploited” the pause button: Imagine you are in school and taking a test. The teacher OPENLY gave you the option to use your notes to find the answers. Sure, it gives you an advantage, but it is not cheating, for the teacher allowed it. In fact, you are only hurting yourself by not using your notes, because why would you not allow yourself to take advantage of your notes when you were told you could do so? Paqoe used the pause button because robtop allowed her to do so. They didn’t have to, but they were in a high pressure situation where they had almost verified the level, and they had an advantage of a pause button to remember the pattern. It’s not cheating, it’s using your resources when you are given them validly, and it’s something ANYONE should do if they have one whenever they are in a high pressure situation. And whoever says the level “wasn’t intended to be beaten this way” how do you know? Did god come down and tell you “silent clubstep can only be beaten WITHOUT a pause button or it’s not legitimate”. Like if I were y’all, I would start using the pause button more often to complete harder levels, cause robtop gave you one for a reason.

I can understand both sides of the story. Not only cause I try to see it from both sides, unlike many other people. 🙄 But also cause pausing your game in a fast challenge may help a little but not much the difference is that she/he/whatever pronouns they use, paused the game in a memory part specifically to remember when to click. Which seems like it is interrupting the flow of the game. However it also can be viewed as ok since like you said, the pause button is in the game. I am not very happy that they used the pause button in a memory part to verify the level but I accept that it is being accepted so I will not go around trashing people for pausing the game. For example, I use to pause my game a lot, because I don't play on a really good PC, so my game lags and the song unsyncs, so I have to pause to resync it. And that's completely fine! Or for example remembering the click pattern, as Paqoe did. And that's also fine. But these people who critisize everything on Twitter won't understand, because they have nothing better to do.

I will voice my opinion on this. I wouldn't call it cheating, but it still feels like I wouldn't be improving if I had to pause in the middle of a level just for my nerves to recharge for example. That's what I did near the TOE II halfway progress mini-ship. For me, it just doesn't feel right that I have to pause for a minute just to do a *hard* part correctly and ruin the nerve experience. I would call it more so a "failsafe" for the brain that can hinder your improvement. I just don't want to make it feel like a necessity to beat levels, especially in *hard* parts struggling from zero. My stance on this is mixed feelings/middle-ground for me, because of how much "it depends on the circumstance".

It did give paqoe an advantage tho. It is not guaranteed that he would have passed the level if he didnt do so. It takes away an important skill being nerve control. You cant pause on other levels because most of the gameplay wont benefit off of it. Unlike other levels tho, silent clubstep does have an ending where it does benefit spamming the pause button which clearly paqoe took advantage of.

I mean, your point is very logical, but it is very typical that in fields such as speedrunning in many games, they do not allow pausing, and although gd is not speedrunning, it still shows that even though the feature of pausing exists, it doesn’t mean it has to be accepted by a community to be used in such ways. I think the best solution is that the team that makes the demonlist should look at all the levels that are on there, and then post-verification, inform the community whether that specific level allows pausing or not, judged by whether it gives an advantage or not and simply accept a verification such as Paqoe’s where only legit game mechanics are used. The work sounds a bit like a bother, but it will atleast remove any controversy with clear rules. My opinion: I would not call it cheating in silent clubstep, but I still think it should not be allowed because it is a bit scummy.
