So far I'd rate the Porch era a 7/10. It's too small a sample size to really say a lot, and it's not realistic to expect him to reinvent the sport or anything in two short camps, but the thing that makes me optimistic is that HE CHANGED TACTICS. After years of watching GGG role out the exact same formation and tactics every game no matter what it was very refreshing. It takes time for a manager to evaluate the player pool and figure out the best way to use them, and for the players to respond to the new way of doing things so we shouldn't expect the world yet. I just wanna see continued improvement which we did see from from camp to camp and especially in the most recent game.

7/10 is interesting given that first leg was very tight and Jamaica had a weaker team in the second leg and still scored 2 goals and created a few more chances in the second half in the 2nd leg. I'll give it a 5.5/10, low expectations then start building from there.

@ajibolavincent5496 yeah I'd be the first to admit I'm not judging harshly at all yet. The first window especially should be graded on a huge curve since he hasn't put his stamp on the team after a handful of training days. The if things don't continue to improve that will change.

10/10 as far as performance vs. the standard results we have seen that led us to hire him in the first place. With relatively limited player possibilities, he used the first camp both as an opportunity to begin implementation of his system and expectations, as well as evaluate some depth candidates of the player pool. This last camp, you could see that there was a different edge and level of pride. You could see that there was a more free-flowing and intentional style of play that encouraged using the entire pitch in possession, asked questions of the defense, and enabled creativity in the attack. (The attack being the primary thing that sunk Berhalter, results aside.) When Poch gets all of these injured players back like Gio, Dest, Adam’s, etc… watch out. The only real question that should be left come summer ‘25 will likely be “Wtf do we do about our CB situation?” With that said, we saw against Jamaica that Poch already has in mind a few tactical options that help their situation.

--> What I saw in the first half versus Jamaica was exceptional, better than anything in the Berhalter era. The fact that Pochettino was able to produce that in his third game in charge is proof that, as Adam said the other day, we're on the right track to being back.

Because I'm the guy who always points this out: Dettmar Cramer, 1974 USMNT coach, went on to lead Bayern Munich to Euro championships in 1975 and 1976. We hired the coach of Olympiakos in the 1980s, when Greece still had an outstanding league. But yes, Poch's resume is up there, and maybe the best, and certainly the best resume since the end of the Dark Age.

There's a reason to his madness. All I can say is to re-watch the final between Argentina and France. Pay close attention to the outrageous stamina and the overall tempo of the game. These guys did not stop. There's a reason Porch is increasing the warm ups and training times little by little. He knows the current level simply won't cut it.

Shout out to Herc! I'll take it one further about the GGG episode inre the Reynas: It was a worked shoot to make it look like USSF was doing its job when it came to due diligence and coaching hires. The whole thing was comedy. There's no way somebody like Gregg, in the position he was in, wasn't hyper aware that calling out a player situation in excruciating detail in a huge conference WOULDN'T cause a schittstorm. I can't be convinced it was just sour grapes. He isn't that inept at the p.r. game. Combine that with the Reyna's responding with a total, legal nothing burger?

My rating so far is 8.5. I really like the changes I have seen: it’s not so stodgy, predictable, and one-dimensional like it always was under GGG. We still have issues on our backline that need to be solved.

I give Coach Poch a 3.5 out of 5. The team has new energy and, at least based on last game, better tactics. Coach is using the players in a more creative manner and getting more out of the talent. That’s good. On the other hand, while Klinsmann had his negatives, as an outsider he saw some of the systemic issues at USSoccer and tried to address them. For example, he pushed hard for more international friendlies outside of Concacaf and tried to limit the USMNT’s participation in domestic tournaments…where we play the same adversaries again and again. Competition outside of Concacaf gave the squad invaluable experience in the run-up to the World Cup. Also, he was excellent at finding duel-National talent in Europe that had been overlooked by the domestic focused managers that preceded him. Jermaine Jones comes to mind. I am hoping Coach Poch will eventually do something similar, but so far he’s been working with our regular players and regular schedule. Until he does, Coach Poch cannot eat a 5 out of 5.

So far, I like the way the USMNT plays way better than under GGG. They're much more fluid and assertive under Poch. It's definitely the best I've seen them since BJ Callahan during the very short period he was the interim manager. There have been those who've criticized the praise of BJ saying he employed the exact same tactics as GGG. I disagree. On paper, yes, it was the same 4-3-3. But BJ seemed to encourage a lot more fluidity and interchanging rather than (as Tac has mentioned) Christianity balll (cross and pray). Poch is already way, way better than GGG. Of course, that's not saying much.

I would say a C+. We lookked horrible against Mexico. Didn't like the goals we allowed against Jamaica. We have a lot of room to improve. Greg was normally between a F and C. I'm already seeing improvement. Especially improvement on the offensive side doing things differently.

6/10. I am massive on bringing in Poch. but realistically…. When we have our best players we are by far the most talented roster in concacaf. we did what we needed to do but I don’t want to overhype it. thought I am excited for the future. but we need to see them play like that against a bigger team. I would love to Uruguay against this team as that would be a nice benchmark to compare it to the copa america.

I think there's a bit of mythologizing about Gio Reyna. He's one of my favorite players, too, but the idea that he's been some awesome creative force for the USNT just isn't true. Yes, having him in the midfield has surely resulted in more creativity than the MMA midfield. And yes, he has had some good performances. But memory-holed seems to be Reyna's inability to break down Trinidad and Tobago. A myth seems to have been created that Gio Reyna came into the Jamaica game and unlocked Jamaica. Reyna came into the game in the second half and nothing changed. The US got a miracle own goal in the dying embers of the game and then a deflated and fatigued Jamaica were picked apart in extra time. Yes, Reyna played a part in that but it was a different Jamaica than the US were facing the entire rest of the game, as evidenced by the game as it was in regular time after Reyna had come in.

There's entirely too much blaming Scally and letting McKenzie have a pass for the defensive problems. In the 4-2 win, the first goal may have been mostly Scally's fault. Or it may not have been. It's certainly not obvious to me that Gray should have been Scally's assignment there. Scally leaving the back post makes it very difficult for McKenzie to cover the Jamaican player behind him. Maybe Scally didn't communicate, or maybe Scally should have covered the player, or maybe McKenzie was late in reacting and covering him. Maybe this situation is clear to someone with good knowledge on defensive rotation but I haven't heard any such discussions. I think the second goal was not primarily Scally's fault, however. It was McKenzie's. You can't expect your fullback to completely shut down a player much faster than him one-on-one in space. Scally knew he could not let Cephas get down the line and turn the corner with that much space behind him. Look at how fast this guy is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6ndkIV3r9Gmjdksi=pc6IYbB5XIyZM4zf&t=26. Scally is not fast enough to get up tight on Cephas in that situation. It's too risky. If he doesn't win the ball then he'll get beat completely and it would be a real error. But what was McKenzie doing? Why was he so far away? There were two Jamaican players entering the box, covered by Ream and Jedi. Behind them were two US midfielders coming back. McKenzie was standing in front of goal covering very little. He should have moved over towards the ball handler and blocked the lane for a shot if the ball handler cut inside or blocked the driving lane to the goal if the ball handler got past Scally down the line. Secondarily, I'm not too sure of this, but I think Turner's positioning was wrong. He was too close to his near post. Scally was not completely beaten when the Jamaican turned inside. He was still blocking off the near post. Turner should have taken a step to his left. And even if that's wrong he should have parried the ball better. Maybe people are sort of deluding themselves trying to maintain optimism because McKenzie seems to be better than anyone else we have at the moment and it looks like we'll need him while Scally, on the other hand, can be replaced by Dest. But McKenzie has had multiple moments where he's been shaky. So has Tim Ream. Chris Richards can only replace one of them and it's not like he's been lights out. The problem is not likely to go away any time soon. It's also worth pointing out that McKenzie is about to turn 26 and Scally is about to turn 22, 5 months younger than Tolkin. I'm not saying McKenzie is bad. It's just that I think an inaccurate narrative has been built.

Herc said Berhalter did some good things with USMNT. What?? I cannot identify one thing...Nothing!! Any other coach would have done better. Selected more skilled players - we know Berhalter let his ego play too great a role - kept better players off the team, and brought in players that did not belong. Tactically, he was lost. We could go on and on. Can anyone state what the heck Herc is eluding to?

Pochettino has been very poor. The exciting play you saw was due to Pulisic's demanding the ball & orchestrating the passing. He played like this for Milan against Real Madrid. We played well despite of Pochettino who started Brenden Aaronson twice at the 10 for his pressing, plus he underrate Pepi & Tessman, and he did ZERO scouting. Pulisic & McKennie are responsible for the improved ball movement, which they orchestrated. Pochettino doesn't dictate or control the passing.
