Is Procreate Overrated?

❗READ THIS FIRST ❗ Hello there! I’ve noticed the recent feedback and backlash in the comments, and I felt it was important to clarify a few things about the video: I acknowledge that I got a lot of things wrong about Procreate. This video was supposed to be about my first time using the app and testing it out because I’ve heard so much positive reception about it! Inevitably, I missed out on many features. The title may come across as a bit harsh, but it reflected the general question I had throughout: "With so many people using it, is it really that good?" And the answer to that question is: Yes, it is! Thank you to everyone who corrected me and shared helpful art tips for Procreate-I’ve been testing them out! For example, you can use the fill bucket tool on a different layer by switching the mode to ‘reference,’ so thank you for explaining that guys. I’m also aware now that there’s a reference tool and a brush history in Procreate. These weren’t mentioned in the video, and, admittedly, in hindsight, that was a poor decision on my part. Procreate has so many great features, like the brush size presets, 3D models, better brush customizations, and many other things I didn’t cover in the video. I've been trying to use it a lot more. So, no, I don’t think Procreate is overrated. For beginners looking for a good introduction to digital art, Ibis Paint is a great app! It has a lot of fantastic features if you look past the funky UI and the many ads. There’s a reason why so many artists are able to create masterpieces on it. Yes, in many aspects, it falls short compared to Procreate. I didn’t mean to come off as biased toward Ibis Paint-I was just trying to share some love for it.. The reason I suggested testing out Ibis Paint before Procreate is that I believe building up your art skills makes a difference! I WASN'T saying Procreate is BAD or that you SHOULDN'T buy it. I was suggesting that you might want to consider purchasing it after building up your skills! Think of it like buying cheap versus expensive color pencils. If you don’t know how to use color pencils, you won’t get much out of the expensive ones. But of course, you can always develop your skills while ALSO using Procreate :> So, do what works for you, guys-you don’t always have to take my word for it. I’m just trying to look out for you all!

3:45 as a procreate user there is an easy way to fix this. 1: go to ur lineart layer then click it and there should be an option called “reference” click that then do another layer underneath and fill and if you lineart is full and connected you can just fill it

Procreate glazer here🙋🏾‍♀️ After seeing the comments this video makes way more sense. I’m so used to procreate when I try to go back to ibs paint it’s so difficult because changing the opacity on the eraser doesn’t work the same as in procreate. I hate sketching in ibs paint but other than that it’s a great alternative! I’m just so used to procreate I could never go back 😢

If you think procreate is overrated you either don’t know the basic mechanics of a drawing app or even how to use one, or you’ve only ever used apps like sketch or ibis paint, and you don’t have to click 3 buttons to select anything, that’s just misinformation, you click on the select tool and you use it like any other drawing program, a lot of these cons are just things going wrong on your end rather than it actually being an issue, I’ve had the app for about 2 years and rarely had any issues, like you can also do the bucket tool thing in procreate just like in ibis paint, it seems your only reference is ibis paint and you’re just dooming yourself by comparing something since there is a clear bias, I recommend watching KZbin videos to see what you can and can’t do since it’d tell you all the things you’re missing in the video

As someone who has always used Procreate I have to say the hide layer is a thing tracers use but personally I like using it for removing a sketch while doing line art and things

Perhaps why alot of artists choose over procreate is the fact you can make your own custom brush to make works easier, and give more texture i think. Cuz ibispaint is limited to making your own pattern of brushes for that. (Though, i still prefer ibispaint cuz im an android user, and even i was an ipad user, meh-)

Procreate user here procreate does have a photo reference tool and they do have an automatic fill tool if you select the layer turn it into a reference you can fill it in with the paint bucket this can be very convenient if your smart with your layers

Ngl, as an Ibis user, I still think that the biggest thing holding back Procreate is that it's Apple exclusive, and this is coming from a dude who uses Android. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's an incredible app that most of my inspos use and admittedly their are certain aspects abt Apple that makes it a better platform for development. But it just sucks when we hear SO MANY awesome things abt it yet we won't get in on any of it unless we immediately change devices for the sake of Procreate, which is kinda daunting if you ask me. That being said, I still desire to use the app together with Ibis in the future in spite of this, and i'll definitely purchase it the moment I decide to switch over for an iPad with a stylus

someone has probably already said this but in procreate when using the selection, there’s an option on the bottom bar to turn on color fill. pair that with the fact that u can tap the screen when using free hand to make straight lines for ur selection and it’s a lasso tool

I can agree with the lasso/selection tool, but the not colouring on a different layer-you can do that on procreate when you press on the layer and choose the option ‘reference’. That allows you to use the fill bucket on any layer, and it will only fill what you want filled in the reference layer. Also, noticed you praising Ibis for having a history on brushes, when Procreate also has this too when you press on the brush icon and then ‘recent’. This is a good video, just make sure to check what you’re saying is true because that could put people off the app, despite it having that feature. I think you’re forgetting to mention the problem ibis has with brushes being locked behind advertisements, which honestly turned me off the app. Also, stuff being hidden behind a monthly paywall is a total let down, one purchase >>>>> subscriptions. Last thing, the quality on ibis paint is severely lacking in comparison with Procreate, my drawings usually ended up looking blurry and pixilated using the former, whereas it looks much cleaner on the latter.

im not sure if the creator of this video will see this comment, but heres afew things you might find useful. 3:46 theres a way to do the fill bucket on procreate without using it on the same layer as the drawing. if you tap the layer your on, youll be able stuff like alpha lock and invert. and if you choose refrence on the layer with the drawing, then you can use the fill bucket on a separate layer without the whole thing being filled. for the thing for the lasso (or selection tool) tool, if your trying to select all layers, you can swipe on afew layers then group them together. also hiding layers can be useful for somethings. anyways, ive used procreate ever since i wanted to try it out. but i did used to use autodesk sketchbook, and for a short time ibis pain (i call it ibis pain, because its a pain for me to use.)

3:48 reference layer! Yes i kinda hate the colordrop as well but its useful in some ways. Reference makes it so you can fill in on another layer, and if aftrr you drop you hold and slide back and forth, it changes kinda the gap sensitivity. But a cool thing is it can fill on fades and make the whole set of colors shades of… blue! If you have a drawing and just drop blue on the color layer for example it turns it all blueish which is neat.

i animate with procreate. (capcut too, but the drawings/most animation is on procreate) i used to use ibis, but was inspired by my favorite youtubers to buy it… i don’t think it’s overrated. it has flaws, but there are so many features, and i think it’s worth the money. you can make your own brushes, filter colors, make literal FACE FILTERS- and more.. good buy in my opinion. (lol i miss gap recongnision from ibis 😞)

I don't think it's overrated at all- it's a great program. Of course, ibis is free, but procreate has a lot more and better brushes, plus a lot of people making brushes for it as well. The selection tool doesn't seem like it is much different between the two apps, frankly. You can also indeed fill in on a different layer using reference layers. There is a brush history in Procreate as well.

Honestly if you already have an iPad it’s great especially with the one time cost. What I don’t get is people telling folks to go out and buy an iPad and Apple Pencil just for procreate. I use csp on both my s6 lite and my laptop and pen display and while on my tablet I might need to pay 27 a year it’s much cheaper in the long run than buying a new device just for one app.

i use sketchbook on my phone for basically everything. no ads, free, you cant make custom brushes but you can customize existing brushes and it stays, so you can just change the top few to whatever brushes you use most. if i have to draw on my pc i use krita because i can do clear png's and there is layers

One thing I love about Procreate is that it's affordable and not tied to a subscription like many other art programs. It also feels like Photoshop but on a budget and as someone that used to work with Photoshop until I finished my study, it made me so happy so happy to find an affordable app that was easy and comfortable for me to get into!

I use ibis and while I do miss some features, I’m so glad I switched to procreate. The ads in ibis paint are so immersion breaking if that makes sense, cause when I do art I get super focused, and the ads js end up annoying the hell out me. Ibispaint does actually have those finger shortcuts! I accidentally use them all the time 0_0; theyre the same as procreate (though idk about the holding with two fingers) and if you're bummed ibis dosent have them, don't worry, they do, I paid attention to the tutorial 😊

I actually started with procreate, let me say animation assist is phenomenal and works great for me to understand, but regular are is tedious, I didn’t know how to make group/folders until I accidentally did it, it’s kinda a figure out as you go situation because it feels more professional! But now I use IBIS and have seen so Much more progress! It’s insane how much my art style has gotten better (Also yes procreate does have a reference tool)

If you wanna use the bucket tool on one layer for lineart on a different layer, set the lineart layer to be a reference layer by clicking on the layer and selecting reference; Then go on the color layer and drop in your colors (be careful bcs if the lines aren’t touching one another it can spill into different sections). And for the layer limit, the number of pixels on your canvas affects how many layers you can have. What I use and what has been the easiest for me is to go to custom layers and make an 8000x9600 canvas, go into the options (via the wrench icon) and crop until you have around 45 layers (you can revise it to have as many layers as you want but be careful since it can affect how pixel-y your brushes look). If you need any more help I can probably give some tips!

I also use pro create! i have tried ibis paint but i found it really difficult and there was to much going on. it is a pretty efficient app tho,and defiantly cheaper. But i think both programs work for beginner artists or very experienced artists.

Ibis has a slideshow when you first download it saying it has AI disturbance features (basically means your art cant be run through an AI software). It’s not definite proof that they don’t stand for AI, but it’s a step.

I use FlipaClip and Ibis paint, but what I'm concerned about is being able to import audio so you can sync it up with the animation while your animating (also I used 30+ layers when drawing, so I could never deal with limited layers)

If you are struggling with the bucket tool actually you have to press long on the outline layer and select “reference” but if there’s any white spots on the outline you have to clean it up it hard but thats what it is

Procreate does have a feature that allows using the bucket tool on a different layer than lineart. Select reference when you tap your lineart layer and all layers bellow (and above) can now use the bucket tool in the lineart :))

i have been using procreate for ages and it was the first drawing program i actually used (thank you dad) and its amazing about the colour filling: tap a layer, tap reference and you can do exactly what ibis paint can do the lasso tool is super easy to use once you understand it. the buttons at the bottom can help with your selection. another thing with colour filling is that you can adjust the threshold! you can also use “continue filling” to fill other parts with the same colour and you can change your colour at the same time btw, theres a “get started with procreate” beginner thing in the help option when you open settings and it will send you to a youtube playlist of tutorials i honestly hate ibis paint but probably bc ive used procreate my entire life nearly. its worth the money!!! (im a bit biased probably)

If I’m being honest, if you think that procreate is overrated than you need to look up a procreate tutorial cuz there are a LOT of things that they show you that aren’t shown when you just get the app

my only real reason to use procreate over ibis paint is the fact that ibis automatically numbers your works and that bothers me a significant amount. if anyone ever tells me procreate is “more professional” than ibis paint, i will correct them SO HARD. ibis paint is actually a professional art program, it just _happens_ to be used a lot by hobbyists/beginners. procreate is not a professional art program, it just _happens_ to be used a lot by professionals. you know in ibis paint you can clip layers? you can’t do that in procreate. i miss it, a whole lot.

What are you talking about? Procreate has had clipping layers since at least 2019. Also, what do you mean Ibis paint numbers artworks? And how is it a problem?

Both are professional art programs. Are you sure you've been using procreate properly?? Cuz I love it much more than IbisPaint. Procreate's UI/UX is far superior than Ibis

Hey, if you go to the line art layer and click on the picture icon of it it’ll show reference click that and then go on a different layer either above or below it and you can fill it in freely and hold the color when you drop it in and then you can slide your finger on how much you want the threshold to be❤❤❤❤ hope this helps!

if you want ibis paint w/o ads and stuff,, theres normal ibis paint (w/o the x) and I think its the same amount as procreate? or less!! :3

*I use both ibs paint and procreate! I love both of them a lot, the selection tool on ibs doesn’t really work 4 me, they’re the same yes but it’s probably bc I used procreate more the 1st time I got it, js recently went back to ibs. The selection tool is basically the lasso tool on procreate u js gotta use fill bucket on the selection u made but I do like the ibs version. For fill bucket on ibs I actually don’t vibe with but you were right about it but procreate only fills the parts you color like, make a green circle then place it, tho it’s sometimes annoying bc if you use a different color with the same layer then it might change the color so multiple layers are needed. (And you can change how much it fills by sliding your finger or pen across the screen as you place it). Srry 4 this being so long I js like to talk and stuff but pls don’t take this negatively as I mean it positively and only informational as a procreate and ibs user :) (ur art looks great btw!)* One thing i hate about ibs is that when i color it instantly color picks when I don’t want it to but to each their own ig

tbh I love procreate. I find Ibis to hard to navigate and it's to messy for me- I just love it's clean interface. both are great though! I also use clip studio paint ex cuz I'm extra :)

I think the “hard to navigate” is simply because you’re not used to it, a new interface is always hard to navigate no matter the app
