Same, and I might add that mongo pushing has rare situational uses. You can turn on a dime mid push while pushing mongo. I don't know of a specific time when you would necessarily have to do that, but it is a thing, lol. And, as being a long-time mongo pusher that finally converted to regular push. I noticed that if you are skating some really nasty ground full of rocks and cracks, you can mongo push right over that shit, and then go back to regular pushing once you get on better ground, lol.

The hardest thing about un-learning mongo is learning to throw down with the other hand. I’m goofy and always threw down with my left hand. I’m 45 pushed Mongo my entire life and un-learned the push in a month. I STILL have trouble throwing down with my right hand. Just refuse to push Mongo.

My goal was to stop pushing mongo by my 40th. I hate to say it, but something that helped me was my kid’s Razr scooter. 😂 It allowed me to get the motion better while keeping balance from the bar. I pushed mongo my whole life. 43 now. 2 years ago I tried to change. It took most of a year before I felt like I had 80% of the strength of the mongo push. I'm 100% there now. I still can't run and throw down as well as mongo but its getting better. It definitely sucks to feel like you are stepping so far back to learn a basic skill that is the set up for every trick. I agree that a back foot push looks better. Teach the kids how to do it right but let the ones that do it and rip be celebrated. One day someone will come along and make it look cool.

So my throw down was always with my right hand into mongo until recently I finally spent the time to learn it with my left hand. I def don’t regret it! Still not as comfortable and as fast as I can do it mongo or switch but it’s progress. Cheers

Crazy how many people learn to push Mongo starting out for some reason, I push Mongo for maybe six or seven years when I was learning to skate (skating 20 years now) and finally made myself learn to push regular when I was 14 or so. I'm regular stance myself not goofy but I guess the real gift of pushing Mongo that long is that I still have that muscle memory on that leg so I actually do have a pretty mean switch push that I don't have to go mongo for, I can go between regular push and switch push no problem.

I started off pushing mongo but I was young enough that I still was messing around with scooters and someone in my friends group gave me crap about pushing mongo so I used a scooter to learn to get more comfortable pushing regular then moved that onto the skateboard. Years later now I can push with both feet equivalently. It's nice too cause skating between spots I can switch feet if one is getting tired from pushing

Pushed mongo for the first few years of skating, then was made aware of what it was in the Tony Hawk Trick Tips video. I was able to unlearn it in about a month which seems like everyone else's experience on this thread. What helped me was making a game of it saying to myself "alright if I start pushing mongo, this next trick has to be switch" so I became aware when I was doing it.

I learned to do both when I was young because I'd follow my mom along while she was jogging for miles. So my leg would get tired and I'd switch. So my advice to homeboy is to push, and keep pushing until you're tired and it'll force you to learn.

Kids learn to push mongo cause it’s easier to steer or change direction that way (as a novice). They’re also unaware of how tight or loose their truck preference will be. Understanding how to evenly distribute your weight/balance, is a skill within itself too…SIDE NOTE:….If your doing a line and you’d rather LIFT your truck up off the ground rather than carve (to change direction) It looks like poop too… Obviously you can’t carve at all times to change direction, but if you can, do it that way…

I pushed mongo for about 3 years. I kept trying to justify it to my friends on why it's ok to push mongo. My arguments weren't really valid, essentially all were excuses. I eventually gave in and learned to push regular. It was super weird for a month or two. Afterwards, it feels completely natural to push regular. There are a lot of advantages to pushing regular. e.g. If you don't have much runway for a stair set, you can set up your front foot early and don't have to move it.

Yeah, I was the same. But there are two rare times a mongo push could be useful just as a matter of transportation from point a to b on a board. While mongo pushing, you can turn on a dime mid push if you have to. Also, if you have to go across some hella crusty ground full of rocks and cracks, you can mongo push and make it over stuff and not eat shit. There are definitely more cons than pros to pushing mongo, but I just think it's interesting to point out that even mongo has some rare utility to it.

I started pushing normally that day without focusing on doing tricks or anything else and I would say that it probably took me about a week until I felt comfortable pushing normal. I've rode mongo (mainly longboard) for over 25 years, and get told I ride it so clean its not noticeable. I've always moved my back foot to the front trucks when pushing. Then when I bring my front foot on, I sorta hop/slide the other to the back truck in one motion. I also have insanely good balance, but have always struggled to ride switch, both on street or snow. I can actually push both ways, but have a more powerful push with mongo, and feel more balanced/comfortable riding it so its what I stick with. Tend to wonder if it has something to do with handness, as I have never been able to kick or throw anything with my left side.

Love how open the discussion was. This is skating, man. I love it. It is totally doable for Merced. I am 46 and learning to push switch (which is goofy for me) now after (re-)learning pushing regular two years ago. Once you decide that it's no problem to suck, it's motivating like beginner progress all over again. Just don't expect it to go in a few sessions. Don't set a specific time (like two month) - just realize the progress that does take place every session. I do whole sessions pushing 90% switch , rolling around the park, up and down banks and there is (little but noticable) progress every session.

Former mongo pusher here. I learnt to push ‘normal’ as I decided to learn one day as I would skate to work on my cruiser. Start with really small light regular pushes to get used to balance and weight distribution. Slowly build up to bigger longer pushes. It does feel a lot ‘cooler’ and more efficient. Blasting huge normal pushes feels rad! But yes, I’m still used to throwing down with my back hand.

what I have found is that one of my legs is a little longer than the other and my body is always seeking for the path of least resistance because efficiency saves energy. I'm goofy, but my right leg is longer and more powerful... I could do weighted pistol squats on my left leg for years and my right leg would still be stronger . when I am skating up a hill or I want to really haul ass I tend to skate switch . when I "skate" , I push goofy . But when I am going some long distance I tend to want to skate regular. I stopped pushing mongo because I kept busting my ass pushing when my back foot would tic tac the board, but skating "regular" feels like it uses way less energy when we aren't talking about doing tricks or carving transition.

There's an easy fix for pushing mongo. Turn around and skate switch. You'll now be pushing regular right away. I pushed mongo for the first year or so back in the mid 90's, so when I started skating switch later on I never pushed mongo in either stance.

I think its along the line of being cross eyed dominant. You feel comfortable with one foot on the board but your stance is the opposite once you get on. Pushing regular or goofy just prevents excessive movement.
@babylonastronaut

I'm left footed and right handed/ right eye dominant so pushing regular in regular stance feels backwards, but so does riding goofy. Idk, if I cared I'd just push switch.

Switch mongo is completely acceptable in my opinion. I pushed regular mongo and realized it wasn’t how it’s done. Switch mongo can look good.

because your shoulders are still parallel with the board and you can do a little hop to get into position for your trick, when I got older I started doing a bit more switch mongo because I was mainly just milling about having fun, when I was younger I used to practice pushing switch a lot, even throwing the board down switch. pushing mongo regular looks/feels weird because it's not natural to hop off your back foot, I see people push, then put their front foot on, then adjust their back foot after and it looks painful lol

I started skating by pushing mongo and kept doing it for about 5-6 years, my friends never said anything and other skaters didn't say anything either. I randomly started pushing regular one day and it felt more natural, my board wouldn't pop up sometimes like it did when pushing mongo so I kept pushing regular, but by then I had no one to skate with so I just stopped. Still, makes me wanna start again now that I know.

I pushed mongo for 15 years. The first year and a half I skated without ever seeing anyone else skate irl, and only a bit of vert on TV. So by the time I was really into skating pushing mongo was just baked in. I got made fun of a bit sometimes, but it wasn't some cardinal sin among the guys I rolled with. It led me to be good at some weird tricks, like I could pop front shove higher than I could ollie, and I was really good at nollies and nose manuals. Fast forward 20 years later and I get a board and go to push, and it was terrifying. I realized pushing mongo you actually jump back onto your board when you reposition your feet, it's scary after not skating for so long. So I had to learn how to push regular for the first time just to cruise around.

I had starting skating is about 2000- 2001 and got called out for pushing mongo around 2005 - 06 and got made fun of hard. If you’re looking through the comments, just go to your park or on the street and just get the feel of pushing “correctly”. Have your front foot on a slight angle and just get the strength in your legs and eventually you will gain muscle memory. Good luck if you do wanna change it up

I swear the best way to learn to push regular is to find a gentle slope so that you can roll without pushing and just balance on just your front foot. This builds the muscles you use to balance on that leg much faster because you’re not throwing off your balance by pushing. Then once you can comfortably balance on your front foot for a good distance pushing will feel much more comfortable and will be way easier to close your shoulders and keep your weight centered on the board. Hope this helps anyone looking to stop pushing mongo cuz this helped me so much and I quickly learned that mongo pushing truly is a big disadvantage!

it’s actually easier to learn just bc if you ride regular, and you’re right footed, your right leg becomes the leg base of your body. For rundrops, just think of it as a nocomply where your back foot hits first

This was a great topic. I've been skating since 1988 and even back then regularly Mongo wasn't ecceptable. Switch Mongo can look good if it's done right though! A lot of younger people don't know that some of best skaters in history were Mongo. Chris Cole, Ronnie Creager etc. They all forced themselves to push regular and it definitely made them a better skater! I remember skating a contest with Cole when he still pushed Mongo and his style and stance was absolutely different from pushing Mongo.

@joshuadansby2874

Just stating my opinion that happens to be the most efficient & best optimized technique to push on a skateboard. "Style" (style body movement) is the proportions of your limbs & how they move in synch with one another is the code for each individuals silhouette which cannot be changed, only a trick technique can be changed. Neen Williams heelflip "ninja kick" is not a style, that is a Technique. Neen's foot position, flicking foot direction being fully extended (followed through) which allows the nose of the board to dive down & tail to rise up allowing the tail to make contact (catch) the board First with the popping foot to execute proper Technique. Pushing mongo is not a style but instead is a technique which is not the most optimized & efficient way to push on a skateboard. Most people tend to do things that isn't the most efficient & optimized technique when they begin something new.

There's a park near me where people walk/bike/rollerblade around a flat path, I went there and just pushed regular for a couple laps and it made a huge difference compared to trying to navigate a park while also re-learning my push. I still default to mongo sometimes but I'm doing a lot better pushing regular now, next habit to break is constantly picking up and throwing down the board, rather than just pushing into things

If we are talking straight cruising and booking it. Mongo is a very good for anticipating things being in the road ahead of you. When you’re pushing regular you tip forward into stand and rocks. 22 years in here.
