Suhel Seth | Interview | I Read This Book | Nishant Mittal
Mr. Suhel Seth is an entrepreneur, advertising veteran, author, columnist and political commentator. He's known to be brutally honest & politically incorrect, despite being a true "people's person". Those characteristics don't usually go along, but Mr. Seth somehow manages to walk on water. In this episode, it was lovely to have a free flowing conversation with him about advertising, reading, evolution of India, and everything in between.

So the crux of the interview is, never go in front of Mr.Seth undercooked! But I'll still put my money on you as you're young and willing to learn. And as always, it was a pleasure listening to Suhel, a plethora of knowledge. Best wishes

Thank you so much, Kamal. :) I'll tell you a secret. Reading is on a severe decline and that observation is supported by several studies. I shared a couple of them with Mr. Seth after this chat (as discussed) and he took them on quite sweetly, as he always does. While I was there, my objective wasn't to win the debate. Sometimes people lose relationships in the quest of winning arguments and I was pretty clear I didn't want to do that. What I do wish for is that I don't look "undercooked" in my conversations (as I clearly do here). I'd try to make sure that doesn't happen in future. :)

@@NishantMittalVideos You’re right about winning the debate. People don’t understand that a debate is never about winning or losing, it’s always about learning and getting the other aspect of discussion as well. I also agree with you that reading in India is certainly on a decline. So Suhel got this one wrong, alongwith couple of other points where he actually contradicted himself , but he’s allowed to make few mistakes like everyone else! Apart from not reading, I see current generation has no interest in innovation, creating collegial communities, working for climate change and overall goodness and human values. Instead, I see most of them consumed with Instagram and other useless social apps. This disheartens me, considering we’re a young nation. But what’s the point of being a young nation if the younger citizens have no interest, except buying phones and clothes and keep dreaming of getting rich by hook or by crook. Your take?

@@kamalafroz I'm also not very enthused by the general population's rather frivolous and vain interests. But what I've realised is that the general population doesn't account for much. It's the outliers who lead to societal jumps. So while the majority is engaged in whatever we don't like, I'm pretty sure we'll have a few outstanding folks who make up for all of them. Amen.

We must compare the readers taking the 1980s as base vis-a-vis 2020 or 30s. Previously, 50 to 100 people read one book. Now, everyone purchases a book personally without sharing it with anyone. Also, purchasing doesn't mean a real reading. I have many books unread in digital and paperback formats. Suhel is ruthless and unthinking in answering a polite query asked by Nishat.

His assessment that people are reading more doesn't seem to be correct. According to the National Endowment for the Arts, the percentage of adults in the United States who read books has decreased by 7% over the past decade. A 2023 National Literacy Trust survey found that only 28% of children and young people aged 8-18 read daily, a 26% decrease since 2005. Enjoyable interview though. Have always enjoyed his constant "What am I doing among these dumbos!!" look on his face & tone of his voice 😀

Dare not try to make vague and passing comments with Suhel Seth. He will gobble you without a sip of water, and when reading is challenged he can prove to be an avalanche. Do your homework properly or he will prove you to be a 'dolt.'😄
