Normally I’m team Michael, but this one I’m mostly with Ben. Really like both of your analysis and calm reasonable takes. I do have to say that this will work out easier than we all think. I think it’s incredibly important to bring Rodgers back THIS season. This will tell you all the answers you need. If he can make this offense look average then we are good to go and can build on that with personnel upgrades. If the offense looks like trash then fire Hackett and Rodgers will have to deal with that or move on. Simple

My thoughts mirror yours very closely. I also usually am Team M, but Ben is a voice of reason here. I'm on the fence about AR coming back this year, but emotionally, I just want to see it and experience it, even if it's for one game or one half. And I agree, even an average or something remotely resembling an average result gives hope and tells us running it back with him one more time is worth the roll of the dice. Anyway, good take.

RS & JD have told us multiple times this year and last year it was basically all players they brought in. A.k.a. their team.!! RS coaches, an undisciplined football team. From stupid penalties, offsides, encroachment. his team also regularly has drive killers, holding late hits and they’re always at the worst time. I’ve never seen a player start the next week on the bench if he was a starter. John Franklin Meyer late hit last year against the patriots. He had something like it this year. He started both times the following week. Maybe if he doesn’t play the first quarter of the next two games he would stop doing it. If he’s worried about his feelings jerk him off in the locker room after the game. You can’t worry about somebody’s feelings and emotions when they make $15 million a year. The only thing that matters is production. E says well, he needs a quarterback. Shit any decent coach is going to win with a good quarterback, except it appears Brandon Staley. The meaning of a good coach is mostly tied to a good quarterback. Bill Belichick greatest quarterback ever unless Tom Brady is not his quarterback and then he’s below average at best. But he’s an amazing defensive coordinator. A great coach is Bill Parcells he gets the most out of what he has. A great coach is MTomlinson no matter who’s under center he wins in Pittsburgh when he has a good quarterback he wins a lot more.

I am a Packer fan and a new Jets fan (I follow Aaron). This is by far my favorite podcast and appreciate the objective, deep analysis. I do, though, feel that you might not quite get the powerful effect Rodgers is having on the decision-makers. He is very willful and has never admitted to his role in any type of failure both on the Packers nor the Jets. My guess is that Saleh is ready to fire Hackett but knows Rodgers will crucify him w/Woody and on McAfee, etc. Aaron feels he is the OC and he 'doesn't need another offensive mind. Hackett's role with Rodgers is to provide nurturance and emotional support, like a brother , father or uncle; Rodgers doesn't look to him for play-calling. Rodgers would butt heads with any new OC-guaranteed. A bit of history w/Rodgers: He is 10 years estranged from his family of origin. (I side w/him on that one) and he doesn't have his own family so he relies100% on friends. He can't or won't perceive the friends on the team objectively. Cobb is a de facto brother, so is Boyle, Lazard, Hackett and so on. Saleh is aware of this entire phenomenon which is why he proceeds very carefully; look @ how long it took to bench Rodger's 'brothers', Cobb & Lazard (and Uzomah-another BFF). It's a political quagmire.

The front office could ignore all of that though because it's not like Rodgers is going to give them 4 or 5 years of play. In 2 years it is highly likely that HC and GM are gone and new staff are drafting a new QB with AR retired.

Yea you're right...it’s cliche. I should’ve said patience instead of continuity (I advocated to make other staff / front office changes). I think they've had enough success (2022 draft / 7-4 w no QB / Rodgers trade) that gives you justification to try to see him and Saleh’s vision through for 1 more year. Especially since the defense has been a top tier unit for 2 years with absolutely no help. I just want to see the vision with Rodgers and retooled offense before we tear it down...which is the likely scenario given how much money they've invested. -Ben

Salah gets all the blame .. he was hired knowing that the team was drafting a QB with their first round pick , who did Salah bring in to develop him ? A offensive assistant that had ZERO play calling experience ZERO experience working with Quarterbacks.. this was Salahs primary task .. you need to get this right , JD was at fault by not dedicating every draft /free agency addition to building around your Rookie QB but the majority of the responsibility falls on Salah he assembled the staff & he told JD what he wanted as far as players & their importance to the teams success

Robert Saleh and JD should be putting out their resumes for their next jobs. The only guy on the entire staff who should be retained is Jeff Allbricht. THESE GUYS HAVE NOT CHANGED THE JETS CULTURE! The defense gave up in the second half of the game and on the Hail Mary Pass Garrett Wilson was the only guy making a half-hearted attempt to tackle Holland. This team is PUTRID ON OFFENSE.

And if the new GM smart, he’ll look to trade Garrett Wilson. Because there’s no way he’s gonna stay on this dumpster fire franchise he’ll have one year of good quarterback play if Aaron Rodgers comes back next year and stays healthy out here and that’s 25% at best. And they could get two ones for Garrett or definitely a one and a two, but probably two ones because you can secure him for four more years with Fier option and a franchise tag.

After the game, I was in the "Fire Everyone!" camp. Upon further consideration, however, I have to reluctantly admit that they really have to give Joe D and Saleh next year with Rodgers to see how things can go. Besides, it would be cutting off your nose to spite your face to take a hard line with Rodgers. We have to ride next year to see what happens. Everyone gets a mulligan for 2023, but no playoffs next year, then the Jets definitely should clean house! No excuses! If Rodgers gets injured again, too bad. He's old.

The contrast in coaching between McDaniels (17-11) & Saleh (15-31) couldnt be more clear in that game. Remember the Fins moved on from Flores who was failing Tua/the offense. The Jets need to adopt the new trend of the NFL, with OC's making better HCs (McVay, Reid, etc winning SBs lately).

Lots of stuff can be true at same time. JD did some good drafting. He is terrible at free agent signings. Saleh is not a good HC but he is a good defensive mind. Real good HCs in the NFL do not get to go home and rear their 7 kids. Usually they have rough personal lives bc they are never around. That sounds mean but I am pretty sure it is accurate. He probably hates being an HC at this point. If there is change, which there should be but there won't be, it would have to be the whole staff south of Woody. Rogers, in my opinion, is Woody's doing. It worked and got his crappy teams Hard Knocks, lots of national games, and media attention. The rest is Joe Douglass. Please start over now instead of making us wait for 2025. That way the next GM can pick his own rookie QB this upcoming year when Jets pick in top 5. We experience this as fans over and over. This current concoction of a front office and staff clearly does not work.

Why the Rodgers Strategy was an evidently dumb idea *in real time* (not hindsight, real time): it was justified and sold on the basis of a crushingly idiotic risk/benefit analysis. The widely advertised upshot of "credible top-of-the-conference contention" was probably a 95th-plus percentile outcome, whereas everything below a 50th (ish) percentile outcome was the kind of cataclysmic downside that we're seeing now (namely, the utter annihilation of the team's competitive prospects for the next 2-3 years). That's the kind of gamble that smart, creative leadership would never, ever make.

In order to grasp the ruinous failure of Robert Saleh + understand why he'll NEVER lead this team anywhere, you've gotta ask yourself a simple question: "what would I expect of a clever, highly competent executive in an analogous situation?" Wouldn't you hope that he'd forcefully, vehemently advocate for a smarter approach to the backup QB position? Wouldn't you hope that he'd insist on the aggressive pursuit of eminently available O-line depth (Risner, Cleveland, Josh Jones, Jason Peters)? Wouldn't you want him to make far better offensive coaching hires? Wouldn't you want him to be far smarter/more proactive re: snap allocation/roster management (see: Duane Brown, Mekhi, Tippmann, Ruckert, Izzy, Huff, McDonald, etc)? Wouldn't you expect him to take prompt, vigorous, innovative measures to correct the team's abysmal procedural malfunctions (e.g., penalties, communication)? Wouldn't you want him to order - and indeed oversee/manage - far more aggressive efforts to upgrade the offense on a week-to-week basis? In every case, Saleh has either not done these things, not done them well, or not done them quickly enough. There are only 32 of these jobs in the world. The idea that you can't find somebody who'd check these boxes better than Saleh insults everybody's intelligence.

It's not only on Saleh for on field issues. Saleh could have easily made the decision to bring in a competent QB the moment Rodgers went down. Superstar QB? No. But someone who with this defense could win us games. Wentz didn't need to give up anything. Who has been up and down but 10 times better than what we had. Or if we made a trade I think heinicke is a lot better than people give him credit for.

The only chance this franchise has of turning it around, long-term in the near future, is bringing in an offensive minded genius to be the head coach and a GM. He’s on the same page with. Let them draft whatever quarterback they want and hope he can hit. With the caveat they don’t win another game that’s why you fire everybody now and honestly the stupidest coach we have the rest of our games. You bring in the least qualified guy we have, and make him head coach with the understanding he hast to play Tim Boyle the rest of the way because we want to give him a real look.😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉. Because at four games, we have a chance for a top five pick maybe if we win one more game or two more games that puts us somewhere between five and 12

You guys keep focusing on ZW being a bad pick. How do you make that determination when the pick went to the worst team in the league that was bound to destroy his development? Until Zach Wilson goes to another team and fails like Sam Darnold did, you can’t conclude that because he played badly with a team that largely contributed to him playing badly, you can’t definitively conclude that he is a bust.

For me, this all starts and ends with the o-line, and the blame can be spread amongst Joe D, Saleh, and Lafleur. They hired MLF to operate the zone run scheme, putting emphasis on mobility while forgoing size. That lack of size and strength has led to a lack of durability. AVT and McGovern are both under 310 lbs, Tippmann just north of that number, but at 6’6”, he’d be considered thin for a lineman. That’s not conducive to being a durable o-lineman. Furthermore, with the run game being so deemphasized in the modern NFL, it becomes even more frustrating that their primary plan for the line had to do with their run scheme and not pass protection. Even their starters were not excelling in pass pro, and now they’re down to 3rd and 4th stringers playing tons of reps. The only success this offense has had in 3 years was against the 2 worst defenses they’ve faced in that time period, which just happens to have coincided with Mike White getting those starts against the Bears and Vikings. Against the Bills, he looked as mediocre as any QB they’ve put back there, until he predictably got hurt. With no line, Breece is hardly better than Cook, who looked no better than Carter, and the only QB who could stay healthy was the 6’6” 250 lb. granite statue Joe Flacco. Nothing can work behind a line that is this ill-equipped. I expect the coaches and GM back, but the philosophy as it pertains to the line must change, and I can’t see how it’s addressed in one offseason.

Biggest problem plaguing Jets fans have been unrealistic expectations. Unrealistic expectations that ZW was supposed to be an NFL ready QB year 2, despite his rawness, lower floor and terrible plan to develop him. Unrealistic expectations that both Saleh and Lafleur were supposed to also be instant high level coaches. Unrealistic expectations that despite the early signs that the team was out of synch, the team was playoff bound. I can go on and on …

Unfortunately, the Jets are a year away from Rock Bottom, so next year will be even worse, and I'm an optimist. Aaron Rodgers will not last the whole year, we will sign 1 or 2 washed up OL that will be of no help, as too much of our money is allocated to Rodgers and Lazard and will prevent us from getting any of the top free agent OL. And what OL would want to come here, knowing that he is basically a one-man team with a bunch of retreads. Lazard juggles every ball he catches and drops more than anybody, perhaps he needs contact lenses, but you are not going to fix his hands at this age. Saleh prides his reputation on the DL rotation, and how it wears down the opponent, but he doesn't see that our opponent is doing that to us from the start, if you know the way to attack an offense is thru your DL, then you must know that the way to improve your own offense is thru the OL, it's ludicrous that we have all rejects playing on the OL. Can't wait to see how many draft picks we send to the Raiders to get Davante Adams, and how much his cap hit will be. And let me also condone the policy of drafting so many 23-24-year-old college players, they play well against 20-year-old college players, but they are already at their peak, and they will not improve much as the years go by. 2025 is when we start all over again.

I think we as Jet fans give this coach and GM too much of a pass. They exhibit a bare minimum level of competence, which is something this franchise has lacked, but they are both bottom tier compared to any other NFL team. Joe D has whiffed on most of his draft picks, and his only good draft was one that had 2 top 10 picks and a third first rounder and a high 2nd. You should get good players with those picks. That’s not good general managing, that’s the very bare minimum expected of a GM. He did well to accumulate those picks, but he stripped the team down to the studs to do so and we still lack the necessary talent to compete today. Neither Saleh or Douglas have been good or even average, they’ve merely been not the worst. Fire them all. And if Aaron cries about it, let him retire to the Vikings.

CYJ pod you couldn’t be more wrong. No coach or front office in the league gets constant mulligans for injuries bad qb play etc especially when your team gets embarrassed on offense every week. If you can’t win without one player then you’re toast. It seems almost comical to say. Rodgers is coming off a torn Achilles at 40 to expect him to come lead and better this offense to playoffs next year is really a sad hopeless dream we hope comes true. You gotta clean house after this year and if Rodgers doesn’t agree he can retire and we can start the rebuild sooner rather than later. To me this is not a question of what happens next year. This regime has had multiple seasons no playoff appearances still the longest drought in the league right now. You don’t get another year for that. Especially with the product you put on the field every week. It’s time to let this whole regime go. Stop depending on Rodgers. I find it laughable how we can sit here and just think that he’s gonna return to form next year and lead us to the playoffs. It’s wishful thinking, something that has burned this fan base. Let it all go start over get a gm who can build right and let chips fall where they may. Saleh and Douglas cannot get another year.

Ben asks, "Who else is out there?" I'm for bringing in someone with actual winning experience as a HC in the NFL. In the past, when they became available, I wanted Reid, McCarthy, Quinn, Pederson.... and I inevitably got shouted down ("HE SUCKS!"). I'll probably get shouted down ("HE SUCKS!"), but three dudes with actual winning experience in the NFL that are out there are Jim Caldwell, Marvin Lewis, and Rex. None is perfect, but each has shown an an actual real demontrable ability to put a competent staff together, and lead real NFL teams to winning seasons more than once. One of the other frequent remarks is "what good coach would want to come to the Jests?" Caldwell, Lewis, and Rex have all expressed interest in getting back in. The Jests would represent that opportunity with a competent defense to start with. Go get one of them, and let it fly.
