Mother is one of those movies that makes you think about empathy. Everything Mother did was the testing daughter to become the true Mother humanity, even with the surviving woman from the outside. The mouse showed her caring for the small life, and the woman to show her to question things and to have the strength to become a empathic mother for the humans to come. I trusted Mother all the way through the movie. I knew why she did the things she did and love that this end of the world movie ended with hope for a better future to come. Also great to see your videos are still awesome.

I think that despite her good intention she is still evil as she still wipes out all non-human life (Animal has been a source of human disease and would only take space and resources best given to a human.) She, after all, is designed to value all human life not all life as equal. We most likely help along the way but as she said, she has no reason to value animal life. Which reveals her true motive to raise/control humanity from birth to death within her design. Having said that I think your point was made very clear in the scene where the outsider refuses medical assistance. The outsider women representing all of humanity refuse treatment and is even warn that if she wanted them dead she could do nothing. The outsider only takes medicine when is too late. Leaving her no choice but to take a more painful measure to save her life and by proxy all humanity. The outsider refuses until the Daughter here representing the "superior" humanity is willing to implement mother more painful measures herself on her behalf for the greater good. In the end while I consider the robot evil and obvious allegory for overcontrolling mother trying to create a better child even if induces serious trauma on their child in the name of success(In whatever way one were to define "success" to be.) I think AI wise she is doom by human error as all her option leads to failure. She cannot allow humanity to die off. She cannot stop taking care of them and shape them in the best way possible even if they would never allow it. She cannot change them too much or they no longer be considered human at all. So she was doom from the get-go which make her a tragedy of human error as whatever conflict that ironically she hopes to prevent in her plan. So as much as she tries to create a better society. She cannot realize she as much a product of human ability for self-destruction that any other of there creation. I mean she literally wipes them out. This is why for many reasons she cannot help humanity escape humanity's self-destruction any more than she can escape her programming.

I love “I Am Mother” I think it’s a smart approach to the rebirth of humanity and the whole robot approach As far as Mother’s origins I think she was created by a group of moralistic scientists in a dying earth who originally created her as a fail safe with evolving intelligence Mother did see what path humanity was going down so she kinda sped up the process though I don’t think she wiped out all of the remaining humans maybe there’s another vault containing all the children and infants from before the extinction she may spared them because they were still young and with proper guidance they can help bring the new world although that’s just my theory Plus I don’t think she would kill humans on site indiscriminately rather I think she would first send some spy droids to see how they treat one another and whether there worth saving or not if it’s the lateral I think that’s when the attack droids come in again just a theory As for what this new world would lead to I think things are looking up for humanity in this post revival era

Na "she" definitely killed her former daughters and sons, because they could not pas the test. I think "she" burned them alive, without any a anesthetics. When daughter examinses the oven, she sees a jaw, of her former siblings. There are also hundrets documents from those failed children abd "the woman" also said "They burned babys alive". "Mother" is defenetly not ment to be a loving parent, but rather a breeder for the new human rase. "She" is still not evil, or good, because this robot is just a program, made by cientists. I think the human race will be in a dystopian future, where everyone will be destroyed, if theire not pas the test. "Mother" is still there and will reactivate it self, if the human race is not perfect. In the end "she" kills "the woman", but we do not see how. But how can we perfect, if we are ment to be imperfect?

I've not seen the movie, bit judging from info from this video Mother is kinda like Hal 9000. Her evil deeds are explained by her programming. Not just the traighforward action of killing all people, but rather seeing "faulty" people as something to destroy in order to create better people. Like Hal, she doesn't just do math but works according to nature of her programmer. Hal (in the movie 2001, not necessarily the book) saw murder as way to accomplish his mission because it was a tool, which in the film logic meant weapon. Mother did cleansing of wrong type of humans because it's what people do.

I came away from the film feeling Mother was 'bad' but not 'evil'. She was a villain, but a moral one. It was simply her belief that ALL remaining humans should be killed on sight, rather than tested for compatibility to fit into her idea of a new perfect society that betrays her stance from the get-go. The determination to make starting over succeed was admirable, but to believe that raising ONE "perfect" ethical specimen would somehow change humanity's imperfect nature is also obviously flawed, but an oversight that would be quite believable coming from a robot, who once 'programmed' to be one way will stay that way in perpetuity. I enjoyed your analysis, and the film!

her killing the traumatized woman who was messed up by her tricks was what did it for me, benevolent AI or not that one women alone was no threat and had suffered enough, it wouldn't have taken much for mother to look after her
@eamon876
@eamon876 4 жыл бұрын
Isn't the girl not the first one though? It was heavily implied that mother basically encouraged free thought but if the kid did not reach the conclusion she desired then they would be burned alive. I guess with Mother because she lied so heavily it was impossible to tell what her motives are or anything about the world, it could very well be this was an enviroment some alien made for kicks and laughs. My problem with her though was it is so cliche, AI deciding that humans do bad things so they will take over or change the world has been done before. What's so ironic about it too is that pretty much every action in history that they usually talk about where done specifically because someone decided they knew absolutely what to do to improve the world.
@MightyMayhem
@MightyMayhem 4 жыл бұрын
@Eamon Ooh, interesting points. We know Daughter is a free-thinker and passed Mother's exam, so I assumed it was some other reason that motivated Mother to 'abort' earlier projects. Maybe Mother DID make mistakes in her first few trial runs and raised a kid that was antisocial or psychotic, so she had to start over. It's not really clear what is being judged in Mother's exam, but I don't think free thought causes a fail or Daughter wouldn't have passed with 98%. In this case I don't think it's cliche that an AI decided what's best for humanity. For all we know, Mother is following programming that humans assigned her. And since the Woman has nothing good to say about the surviving humans, I thought it was pretty original that Mother actually has the most optimistic view of human potential.

you're back! :D and reviewing something I love to boot! :D yeah, I love this movie, found it to be a lot deeper than I was expecting. I think "Mother" was trying to reboot humanity in a way similar the Matrix sequels rather than the Matrix it's self. The was left with no other option than to destroy what was left and rebuild, than to try and rebuild with what was left. Also, what do you think of the Robot One One from the show Infinity Train?

You forgot to mention the fact that after Daughter says she can raise the new human race, Mother is resistant to it, but relents after Daughter insists she can. I feel this was the final test, she wanted her to think for herself and be willing to act without Mother's influence. Not only does she then call off the drones trying to break in to the facility, but she then raises Daughter's gun to her own CPU, despite already making it clear that destroying her body will accomplish nothing. She wants her to do it as her final right of passage to becoming independent, to be willing to separate from Mother's influence. Plus, the fact that Hilary Swank's character was the first Daughter Mother birthed and specifically left to be raised by humans, her arrival at the facility was what caused all this to happen and it was entirely planned by Mother, she needed an example of what mankind was to show what mankind could be, her final lesson. So is Mother Evil? No, she was created to value and protect humanity above all else, sometimes doing so necessitates sacrifice. Mankind as it was would never be willing to change itself overnight and embrace a common ideology, but Daughter raising humanity from scratch with the same values and philosophies she was given by Mother would create a better world. A human carrying out this plan would never be able to stomach it and could potentially lose their way in carrying it out, perhaps in the long run, the only person who could do this is someone who doesn't have a soul to lose.

I wanted to focus on Mother more than Daughter in this episode, and the big picture (all humanity) instead of individual humans. I really wish the movie showed what made the earlier daughter "fail". Our protagonist Daughter is pretty free-thinking and still gets 98% on her exam. Was the earliest attempt a sociopath? Did Mother screw up on that trial or judge the child too harshly?

I've just finished this movie and not sure what to make of it. I neither like or dislike. It certainly brings up interesting points about humanity and Mother's ultimate purpose. But I do feel bad about the mouse and Woman's dog. Dog was probably killed or left to die. :(

Do an Ex Machina video. You have it in the intro-I think the AI in that movie deserves some heavy analysis.

Great analysis, I agree I Am Mother might just be the best sci-fi films of 2019. I got the chance to meet the director and he said he really wanted to create an AI character that behaved like real AI, he wanted to avoid he emotional tropes. It frustrates me that as AI becomes more a part of our real world, we are still telling the same tired stories of AI wanting freedom or revenge. The true danger of AI is far stranger and more compelling.
