Thanks to Roger for the request. I love the ideas in this game, but they're not always carried out to their fullest potential. Also, I forgot to make a joke about how the guy on the cover art looks like Donny Osmond.

There's this really heartwarming KZbin channel called Reactistan where people from rural Pakistan react to various foods and inventions from across the world. One episode introduced video games, and when asked if he'd ever played one before, the villager said he had, many years ago, and that it was about a man who threw his shield. Then, out of nowhere, it struck him: "RYGAR! I loved Rygar!" Seriously, the channel is amazing. Elderly Pakistani goat herders are surprisingly good with Zangief.

If you asked me to name just one game from my childhood that was the definitive, formative experience for me, it would be Rygar. I still play it every year or so for that dose of soulmending nostalgia. The world seemed so huge, dangerous, and mysterious and I felt like I was really on this mythic adventure.

What I love about this channel is it presents me with games I'd probably never heard off and will never play, yet you usually introduce them with an anecdote from your chilhood or life in general that just builds a connection from the get go!

I still have my copy of Rygar because it was one of the few NES games that I had that I felt got better once you knew what was going on and you learned about the mechanics. The music for me is so memorable too. Probably would have helped back in the day if I had got a manual with my copy but people tended to lose them so easily back then or just throw them away might have made it so much easier to figure out what was going on.

I played Rygar a lot when I was a kid and its always been a personal favorite of mine. The game has some rough edges, trying to use the grapple in the overhead areas can be a real pain, but the developers were definitely ahead of the curve with some of their ideas and made what easily could've been a complete mess into something unique for the time.

Rygar was one of the first NES games I ever saw when my cousin got a NES for Christmas along with a large bundle of games. To this day I still consider that Rygar music Christmas music as it was constant in my house along with the Super Mario Bros theme and Pro Wrestling theme. I still have endless love for the game although I have never beaten it. I had no idea that the game was supposed to be set in ancient Greece and that Rygar was actually a dead warrior resurrected.

The NES version of Rygar is a lot of things. I'll admit to some nostalgia on it, but you gotta admit the music is really something else. Very evocative. Agree mostly on your take on it, its a shame it isn't as polished, but time/system limitations count for a bit there.

I cannot confirm it, but I'm fairly certain Rygar is a game my brother and I picked up back in the day because of the cartridge art. Didn't have Nintendo Power or any other video game magazines to tell us what kind of game it was. I didn't like it very much as a kid but since I only had the cartridge, I wasn't privy to what was mentioned in this video. I had no idea where to go or what I was doing. I know the game isn't truly open world, but I also know I would game over by traversing into areas where enemies wiped me out in 2 hits many times. It's not a bad game. In a lot of ways it feels like a typical earlier NES game where having the manual or any outside information about it would have helped. When I wasn't getting KO'ed in areas I shouldn't have been, I would get bored trying to figure out where I needed to go. I definitely found Mr. Ticket please plenty of times but his cryptic messages might as well have been in another language. Even when he provided me with helpful items, more often than not, I wasn't able to figure out where and when to use them or I'd game over beforehand.

Interesting note about PS2 Rygar, many believe it was an inspiration for God of War, as it shares a similar gameplay style (obviously preceding it). Most notable Rygar's shield/yoyo functions very similarly to Kratos' Blades of Athena.

Rygar was my first all-night game binge. Me and a friend got together one Friday night while our moms went out. Ordered a pizza and sat down to play the game. Next thing we knew, it was like 615am and the sun was coming up (and we still were yet to kill the last boss... we could get to Ligar, but we couldn't beat him). The lack of polish on the game is definitely evident... especially trying to use the pulley in the overhead sections... fuck me with a rake those parts suck. Definitely in my top ten... possibly my top five.

You didnt mention theres an "experience points" system... so killing the respawning enemies actually builds your attack strength. Do it enough and bosses can be killed almost instantly. Easiest way to max your XP is to go to the land with the floating rocks where the red robots attack you. Pick a spot where one robot respawns... and keep killing that robot for about 10 minutes.. you'll know you're maxed out when you can kill a robot with one hit.

I rented this game back in Junior High and never made it across to the Island because I just couldn't figure out how to get the crossbow to work from that top down angle (turns out you have to just stand there without moving and launch it across). I had to do all that work without a manual and the game was pretty confusing. It's always haunted me that I never finished the game. A few weeks back I put the cartridge in and didn't turn it off until I finished it. Surprisingly it wasn't nearly as difficult as I remembered. After I finished it I read the manual, saw the map and the stuff about the mind points. I had no idea about the mind points. Didn't need them. Anyway, another classic NES game off the bucket list.
