Hi Fronds, it's been a good 9 months since I made this video and wanted to share some things I've learned. Generally I think using a net pot is a lot better for most hoyas. That's not not to say that some hoyas, particularly those with thicker roots and more drought tolerant, would do well in just a glass jar. But since not all my hoyas seem to be happy with this set up I have since moved most of my hoyas into net pots. If you're interested, check out my latest hoya propagation video =) Happy Growing! kzbin.info/www/bejne/op6soKtvmpuFZ5Y

I was having a problem with growing peperomias, Everytime I watered them leaves would fall off or dry up and die, even using a moisture meter. So I tried my Caperata and watermelon in LECA and I am so far very happy with the results. I'm going to try more in LECA.

I just found your channel. I have been transitioning all of my hoyas to LECA. Here in Colorado it is hard to get humidity above 50%. I have taken cutting of several of my hoyas, stuck them in a glass jar with leca and filled it about 1/3 to 1/2 full of my fertilizer/Super Thrive mix and in just a few day start to see roots. I will end up transitioning all of my hoyas and most all other plants that I have. Thanks for the video.

Hello! Thank you! I probably have higher relative humidity in Seattle then you but I still find that my plants do enjoy any extra humidity I can't provide for them, which is why I keep most of my small plants into the propagation box. I created two massive "pebble trays" using shoe trays from IKEA and a single layer of leca and the plants that live on top of them, seem to be really happy as well. I am not looking forward to the day when all my plants outgrow the propagation boxes. I haven't been adding any fertilizer to my water yet and its been well over a month. I probably should soon though. Cool. I love to hear how the transition goes! I have a few ariods propagating in leca now and i plan to keep it there and see how they do.

Yay! You made a semi hydro vid! I mostly use leca for my hoya but I've been converting my other plant so far they haven't reacted badly except both of my alocasia when they were shedding its roots they kept losing leaves which made me nervous but its starting to bounce back. I learned some helpful new tips I didn't know about and will try now! TY

What setup do you use? How long have you started converting your other plants to semi hydro? What fertilizer do you use for your hoyas? I was planning to give them a balanced one.

Nice video explaining it all! I only have one Hoya at this point (want to get more) and I have had it a couple of years. It seems like even though many tout the joys of Leca, is that really easier than soil? It just seems like a lot of work. My Hoya has been repotted one time and loves the soil and the key for me has been simply not overwatering it. Matter of fact out of all my houseplants overwatering would be the biggest killer besides if you miss an insect or say a spider mite attack as once they get going you may easily lose that plant if you don't catch it to treat it early.

@@BotanicalWoman I tried the gel beads in my most forgiving of plants, my Chinese Evergreen. Gel beads around the bottom of the root and filled the remainder of the pot with clay pebbles. Is it necessary to drill holes in the glass jar.
@BotanicalWoman3 жыл бұрын
in my experience air flow is really important so with out the holes, there will be less naturally but i have also had success without. the key is to change the water at least weekly if you get lazy like me, your plant won't be as happy but to stale water/ lack of oxygen, etc

Its in the description of all my videos but let me find it for you. www.using-hydrogen-peroxide.com/gardening-with-hydrogen-peroxide.html
@user-ek7kd3il5mАй бұрын
why would you use a organic fertilizer in a mineral substrate? Worm casting tee? I order to be successful long term, one should put a bid more thought into growing in semi or hydroponic. The fertilizer, ph and so many other factors are very important. This is the reason many people give up on it and talk bad about this system, when in fact they have done lots of mistakes or too little research on it. It is a great way to grow but it needs a bit of knowledge.

What happens when the roots reach the bottom? It is ok for them to touch the water?
@BotanicalWoman4 жыл бұрын
Based on what I have read yes, but based on my experience no. So I don't leave a reservoir anymore. I soak the leca for a bit and then dump it all out. I noticed root rot.
@lokaforhoya59194 жыл бұрын
What will happen to it if you can’t drill holes in the glass or chose not to? Is it better just to use a ceramic pot with drainage holes for this leca medium? Also is it only good for cuttings? Can I use it for my hoyas that have a small root system?
@BotanicalWoman4 жыл бұрын
I have glass jars with holes and without, just because of the balls falling down the sink. I also have used regular pots for semi hydro and because it can't hold any water, it tends to dry out more but the hoyas are ok with that. no, you can use this method with plants that are already rooted but keep in mind that it will take some time for the plant to adjust to this new environment so you may not see any growth for a while. The size of the root system doesn't matter, at least I haven't noticed.
@lokaforhoya59194 жыл бұрын
Botanical Woman thank you so much for your response. How often do you water the ones in normal pots that dry out faster? Would you recommend normal pots for both propagation and for the ones already with roots?

If you are growing semi hydro in a regular pot, you really can't overwater it.

@@BotanicalWoman Good to know. My new Hoya Kerri Variegata I noticed has perked up and raised her head once she arrived and got her water. All 8 where laying totally flat over the edge of the pot. Now perky standing up just in 2 days owning it. I love how my 8 hearts are in a circle of an 6 inch pot. She is my most favorite so far of how the grower laid her large hearts out to grow. I'm just starting out again now that my children are gone, and grandchildren are wrapped up in teen years with their friends. I'm going to buy another Hoya Kerri Variegata. Ha! You finally got some of those diamond bits! :D I think I have the same set. I don't think I'd be able to switch to hydroponics. There's something inside of me that resists the thought of plants growing out of soil. Even if that's actually how they grow in nature. Also, it looks like it'd be hard to tell when I need to water if somebody doesn't use clear/transparent containers. Do they make leca in other colors?
@BotanicalWoman4 жыл бұрын
=) Yes, i finally got the diamond bits! They have been really nice. I resisted for a long time, I am kind of old fashion as well but i decided to finally try it out so we will see. I will say that it has only been a few days and i can see the roots have already started to grow so i am please with that. I actually don't know if LECA comes in another color...I might have seen some but I can't remember where now. But the most readily available ones will be these terracotta looking ones. As for the containers, try to net pot and cache pot, that way you can lift the net pot to see if they are still moisture. Let me know if you decided to try it. I am excited to see the results.
i am not sure but i did check to make sure it wasn't a bad bug.
