idk why they would introduce so many new characters in the last season instead of expanding on all the character dynamics they already had especially cause its supposed to wrap everything up 😐 felt so rushed and disappointing
@lowkeyproductions6681 Жыл бұрын
Yes, this was my main complaint - as well as them introducing a new school environment, because setting is a major character. Never a good choice for a final, or close-to-final season (I think they intended to do 5 originally). I enjoyed the new characters, but it was disappointing to see established character dynamics be neglected. It feels like the writers ran out of ideas for those relationships, and they only knew how to introduce new storylines through new relationships and a new setting.

I got the feeling that a lot if the cast wasn't available at the same time but with Ncuti Gatwa going to film Doctor Who they couldn't delay it and so had to bring in new characters to work around that. It's why Otis and Eric are separate almost all season and why Maeve sounds the first half of the season mostly mostly only seen in phone calls (I know she was always meant to go the US but I feel like they it wasn't originally for 4 whole episodes). Its why part of Jackson's story is about getting over Cal but they only share two scenes all season. You really notice the shift from episode 5 onwards when mote of the cast were able to film together and suddenly there's much less focus on new people

My real issue with this season is that sex education has always boasted a very mature approach to it's themes, and this season's themes are tackled in very weirdly cringe-inducing ways, discarding the honest humor for new therapyspeak, light and cheesy humor, and heavy topics that are only sometimes treated with the level of complexity that used to always be present in the writing, which is why it was so impressive and captivating to watch in the first place! The new creative team did not understand the balance this show had.

Season 4 also sets up a lot of commentary and characters it decides to do nothing with by the end of it. Feels like a reboot that just got cancelled so they filmed an ending reminiscent of the last season (fun fact: Maeve and Otis' storylines resolve in the exact same way twice).

I loved Adams story this season and I think that Maeve and Otis' wnding made a lot of sense. But other than that the season was really not it for me. A lot of the school content felt like a satire of Gen Z, and I thought that was intended to be some kind of commentary on superficial activism. But it just didn't really go anywhere? It was just very over the top exaggerated Gen Z phrases, style, activism etc, going so far that it felt like a completely different show stylistically than the first season. Just me?

This is a good point. There were times this season where I honestly thought they were making fun of the school, but then the vibe conflicted with that. Like when "O" said she was asexual, which was obviously a gigantic lie, but the class all applauded like they could not see she was saying that just because she was busted. Or at the end with everyone turning down the counselor job with a "I learned something speech" which felt like parody.

Sex education was never really lauded by people on the far right, but I think most people still enjoyed season 1-3. What's sad about season 4 was that it no longer had the pep and fun we used to associate with sex education. NO cuz i totally get it. It felt icky, as if they were parodying gen z and queer people. “Look how silly those youngsters are, with their little progressive ideas”. It also felt a bit like tokenism. They introduced new cool queer characters but made them so superficial and flat. I didn’t like it, wasn’t good representation. It all felt like virtue signaling too. “Look we’ve got so many LGBTQ+ characters, but we won’t ever elaborate on them”. It all felt so bad. Idk

This last season is conflicting cause it’s certainly not as bad as people are making it seem. It’s actually a good season of television that I enjoyed a lot! But it’s not a great FINAL season for a show. So I think people just find that aspect unsatisfying because if we didn’t know it was the last season, I’d expect to see these characters again for a season 5. If anything though I think it’s a testament to the quality of the show that even a good/mid season people automatically call bad(which it’s not) but that’s because the other 3 are just that good! And it certainly does not taint the show overall in anyway.

Outside of Eric and Ruby he had no other friends or any social life. It's sad that he stopped the therapy when it was his passion. He could have learned from O by working with her and vice versa. He was able to have sex without having a panic attack when we compare to how he was uncomfortable with his own sexuality and his feelings in the 1st season, he did change. In terms of Otis, season 4 wasn’t my favourite. Otis just feels so much more obsessed with Maeve. He genuinely doesn’t care about anything and ditches everyone for her. Which really isn’t healthy… he screws over Eric constantly and in this season even Ruby.. Ruby (who’s supposed to be the designated mean girl) actually ends being a better friend and partner to him then Maeve. I felt like Maeve’s character was being forced into the show. Her being gone to America should’ve been the end…. I like her character but she’s not into Otis as much as he is into her. She wants to be an independent person with a successful future. Rewatching the show, it’s mostly Maeve just asking Eric to do things which he does without fail. They’re better off as friends. I don’t even feel the chemistry with them anymore after season 1.
@oleksandrkovalchuk3823 Жыл бұрын
Your comments helped me understand my feelings. Thank you. What I feel is deeeeep sadness. The ending of the show is just purely sad. If you take separate arcs, they will feel more bittersweet than sad. Maeve has run for her dreams and now has a chance to get out of the shithole she lived her entire life. Eric found God in his gay nature. Aimee healed her trauma. Otis though had the potential to become the saddest character of the whole show, but he behaved so indifferently during the whole season that I felt no compassion towards him. But what is extremely sad is how this Motis saga, which captured me right away and kept me until the end, just abruptly vanished. I was definitely not ready for this. I can't come to terms with the fact that the main storyline took only 15-20 mins of the whole season. I support all woke people and love stories about them, but this whole show was only partially about this topic. And now, for some reason, the 4th season clearly makes it the main storyline instead of the love between the two main characters. I loved the season, Adam and his father were brilliant, and Aimee was amazing, but I keep asking myself why I spent so little time with Motis. Why didn't I have a chance to dig deeper into their emotions? Why did Otis suddenly become capable of having sex with Maeve? Why didn't I see and feel this transformation? How can you leave a person that you love and who loves you without crying all night long? Again, I understand why it ended this way, but does it have to be so harsh? I live their lives. I drink their love. And I am very sad that I took just a sip of it before there was no more. I believe that if the writers had dedicated more air time to this love story, showed us their pure emotions, made us cry like a river, it would have been easier to understand the ending and let the show go.

Felt like it was left on a cliff hanger, got the feeling stories weren’t finished or they just didn’t have budget to film more and a lot felt rushed. I’m angry Otis and Ruby didn’t get together as they were so together, they could’ve made Ruby an even better version of herself as she was obviously still healing from being bullied and used the bitch attitude cause she was scared of being rejected again cause she’s poor yet Otis didn’t say he loved her back but that was honestly cause he was confused and never said that to anyone before. I have a lot of mixed feelings here. If I had to give it an overall rating, it would be a 6/10 for me. 1. I think my favourite storylines/characters were Adam/ Michael Groff and Ruby. How much the son/ father duo mirror each other and how they both changed from bullies to better men is just great. Ruby deserves better than Otis. 2. I don't care much for the majority of the new characters. I think initially they did not think this would be the last season but with the main cast actors having new projects, it was inevitable (looking at Doctor Who in particular). If Eric had left the show, I don't think the show would have been able to recover from it. I am also for inclusivity but that school was too much for me. I prefer subtle realism with a mix of everything instead of this overly positive fantasy situation. 3. Overall, there are simply too many characters and you cannot give all of them the same time to focus on. 4. Otis was getting on my nerves. Even though I felt for him when Eric excluded him from the new group and when his mum acted as if he was another parent to Joy.

I think some storylines were handled INCREDIBLY well this season (I won't say who to save spoilers of course haha), and others......... less so. A lot of content squished into 8 episodes. Would love another ranking and overall rundown once you're done :)

Hey Brad!!! Huge fan of your channel here!!! Thoroughly enjoy your movie reactions, your tv show reactions, and your music reviews!!! I have an odd question for ya - have you ever watched Doctor Who?? I’d be so thrilled to watch you go through a “New Who” reaction series, unless you’ve already seen it… I’m so excited for Ncuti Gatwa to portray the Doctor, and he’s in Sex Education… I’m sure your love it!

I’m seeing a lot of comments saying that people didn’t like this season. I didn’t realise this and I’m hella shocked! Watched with my house mate… tears upon tears… was great I also didn’t particularly love any of the new characters but that didn’t matter too much for me. Loved it! ☺️ only part I kinda wished wasn’t for the whole season duration was the sex therapist competition 🤣 didn’t care too much but still loved.

S3 had some issues, but the ratings still speak for themselves - The echo chamber of social media wasn't enough to destroy the ratings & s3 sits at an 89% audience rating on RT even today. S4 is currently at 37% and I seriously doubt that it will recover; it's just objectively true that they fumbled at this point. 37% is horrific compared to the other seasons and demonstrates that it's not just the over the top 'shippers' influencing the ratings of the show. Such a shame.

It is bad...seriously, how can you make a character-Otis, develop so much and just bring him almost to the same place he started from - sad and depressed. It is like letting a bird fly just to see how it lands on it's face...cruel, didn't like it, they have to redeem themselves.

I personally have not cared for this since season 2. I do not like the fantastical they brought into this which clashes with the more serious storylines. They also seem to went with surface "representation" rather than good stories. Transforming Jean from a woman who they always shown to be very flawed in her personal life to just "you go girl" was also very unearned. They fell in love way too much with their ideas and characters.

it was pretty fun but im just devestated by the ending after waiting for that endgame maeve and otis finale :,) this season though had some really good moments and reminded me how much i aodre the show and that it just helps me feel like im being understood with all the struggles they go through.

Too many story lines and new characters. The new school is annoying. Nobody likes a new character who challenges one of our favourites. They felt like intruders. Feels like new writers that wanted to take a good concept and make it their own without consideration (or knowledge) of the past seasons. Sadly.

It's weird because I found myself more invested in the storylines of the side characters than I did in the storylines of the main leads Otis and Maeve. Especially the rivalry between Otis and O that got boring really fast. It's also annoying that they killed the romance between Otis and Ruby last season for the Otis and Maeve storyline we got this season.

Looking back, I wish they didn’t add these new characters and try to make them so important. I would rather have had others character we already know and love fleshed out more. Especially Jackson; his story felt so rushed and pointless in the end.
@leonie1617 Жыл бұрын
honestly, I don’t think it’s as bad as people make it sound. I am a little disappointed though, I expected to focus on the main characters. instead of adding more characters, I liked the writing, it was pretty good. It’s just there was too much going on in each episode that I felt like, I couldn’t focus on what was actually going on with anyone, if they just narrowed it down with the main characters, I feel like it wouldn’t be a problem.

Yeah this season was pretty underwhelming for me. They teased a lot and then never wrapped it up.
@thesarcasticsimmer1383 Жыл бұрын
The reason why Jackson and cal wouldn’t work is because cal was worried that Jackson wouldn’t view them as nonbinary , that their relationship would be inherently queer because of this and he would not want/be ready for that/ see the relationship that way (from what I understand). You like whoever you like but when someone’s identity is often scrutinised, you want a relationship that is defined and be proud/out within ur relationship. Nonbinary people are under the trans umbrella thus a straight person can date someone non binary but their relationship would be queer, some straight people would be like 🫤 at this or unable to accept the unfortunate difficulties that queer people / people in queer relationships face, so would view that nonbinary person as a specific gender (not even consciously ) which is not their place to do so/ can be quite hurtful. So cal was protecting themself from this (I love Jackson btw, but this is a completely valid reason for them not to date )

@jenniferbaumgarden9293 Жыл бұрын
I would've liked the Cal character alot more if they were fleshed out. Their entire identity is only that they are trans, and that is all it has ever been. But I DESPISE the new characters. It's like the showrunners just ticked off some boxes of diversity and didn't care about them being interesting or likable. Also, all the actors in the American scenes have TERRIBLE accents. Why didn't they just hire real Americans?!
@ajpringle03 Жыл бұрын
I didn't enjoy this season that much. All the new characters were just outrageously annoying and bland. The ending felt like a cheap cop out, where Otis doesn't end up either Maeve or Ruby. They canned a lot of characters I liked too, which kinda sucked. Adam and Aimee obviously had the best storylines and Sean processing his grief (or not at all, depending on how you see it) was pretty interesting too. This season didn't feel like Sex Education at all and it felt more like one of those shitty modern American teen dramas. The last seasons had their own charm and even the characters that were deemed unlikeable, were still somewhat compelling.

I was so sick of that goddamn baby lmao like ENOUGH nobody cares about Joy and Jean's sister. Otis had no character development. Eric wants to be a pastor?! what a waste of a fantastic character. also maybe it's problematic of me but I wished him and Adam got back together lol

I found the season underwhelming. So much so that I haven’t finished it yet. Which makes me sad. I just wasn’t about the therapy competition. Did like Aimee and Isaac

@zeroknight4517 Жыл бұрын
unfortunately, yes. I didn't like this season. it really messaged a complete different feeling. It's not horrible, but I felt like they didn't care about the characters anymore. Like what was the point of Jacksons last arc? or Maeve, after the first 2 episodes... Adams story (my fav character) was disappointing af. Eric was the only one who had something going on, but yeah...
@user-dx2dm8oq8g Жыл бұрын
The way Maeve is striving to get a better life and was ready to give it all up because of one rude teacher hiring a trust fund baby and seeing how Otis agreed without asking any questions that made no sense to me. Their relationship was very superficial this season they were very surface level with each other, never discussed anything serious. They just used the lump to drop that bomb on Jackson to keep the character busy this season, they didn't want him to explore his possible feelings for Viv or Cal?
@zeroknight4517 Жыл бұрын
@@user-dx2dm8oq8g exactly. I was hoping for Maeve to get deeper into the writing thing or at least something, even her mourning her mother wasn't portrayed will. Last season she was so into her little sister, now we only got like one scene with her? I wanted Jackson to explore more about his thing we got at the beginning of the season, but they completely forgot it, also the arc with his father was nothing but time waste. Erics decision came out of nowhere (like I get it why, but he hasn't spent one thought about it in the whole series). I also didn't felt the whole Otis/Maeve thing, I was like Otis, just go to Ruby... :D . The one character that really got some personal journey was Adams dad.
