Very rarely do tourists visit Singapore and make an effort to engage with the locals. Most usually rave about the infrastructure, efficiency, and cleanliness because that’s what Singapore is best known for around the world. Huge props to you two for making an effort to get to know the people despite only being in the country for 2 days!

Can you imagine if just 10% of all tourists start wanting to interact and mingle with locals, them locals will start to get very annoyed and inconvenienced. There you are rushing to work, some pesky tourists 'accost' you asking about your morning life.

So, you are correct. Can't stop and talk to every tourist who is friendly. It's got nothing to do with being rude. Most people just don't have the time

@@NazriB Singapore is certainly not a "perfect" environment. I can think of several cities with a better environment than Singapore and better for living. Brisbane and Adelaide in Australia come to mind. The thing that Brisbane, Singapore, and Adelaide all have in common is that they are all dull, sterile, and boring. Even if they are all clean, green, and very efficient cities.

the singapore peoples politeness has had an impact on me forever....when i was there over 20years ago if i was on a street looking at a map no fewer than 4/5 people would approach to ask did i need help.....i now do this all the time when i see a tourist looking a bit bewildered in my easy to get lost tourist town of edinburgh.. the relief on many of their faces to know you just are offering help and not trying to rob or scam them is obvious...oh and the food was amazing....

To most Singaporean, Singapore is just ‘normal’ maybe until we visit other places around the world and see the differences in terms of safety, infrastructures, efficiency, cleanliness, services, transport system, little corruption, etc. What we might take for granted: 1. Hospital looks like 5-star hotels. 2. Metro, transport system is a class of it’s own & still upgrading all the 😅time. 3. Government, HDB flats are repainted every +_ 5 years. 4. Cars & transport vehicles are always looks brand new. 5. Read about the Sewerage system, Oil Storage underground chamber, the garbage disposal system in KZbin for details. 6. The new AI largest container port. 7. Etc.

Actually, not being able to chew gum is a misconception. In Singapore, you can chew gum, but Singapore stores cannot sell them. Many Singaporeans go to Malaysia and bought back gum to chew here. So the true law is Singapore stores cannot sell gum, not no chewing gum in Singapore.

Not so true thou. I stayed in Singapore for almost 3 years, I have been challenged by customs officers at Tuas Checkpoint when they found a bottle of Extra in my hand carry which I bought for the long bus ride from KL. The wordings used by the officer was a bit interesting, "Don't you know that chewing gums are banned in Singapore?", "Can you find chewing gums selling in stores here? Anything not selling here are banned ok?". Eventually I told him to forfeit it if it's violating the rule, but the officer let me go after dropping a warning, "don't bring this to Singapore in future".

@@eagol Sorry I think that particular custom officer does not know his work and the law regarding chewing gums. You CAN chew chewing gums in Singapore. But you CANNOT sell chewing gums in Singapore. If you buy and bring the chewing gums to Singapore from overseas for personal consumption, it is OK.

We are two empty nesters and just moved to Singapore after an amazing opportunity presented itself. We had sold our home in Vermont, USA a year previously - looking to simplify our life and allow us to take advantage of any opportunity that came our way. So about 5 months ago we packed up from one bedroom NYC Apartment to head over here with much less in tow than we have ever had.. So glad that you enjoyed yourself here. Singapore has made me look like a professional photographer and videographer - but it IS ALL due to Singapore definitely not my skills. And the thing is, so much of all this is free to you as a traveler and all the citizens of Singapore. You can chew gum - you just cannot buy the gum or sell it here in Singapore.≈ just do not throw it anywhere that is NOT a garbage can. So just like Disney , they don't sell gum in the parks either.. And speaking of Disney...They love their Disney and all the children would love a nod to those 7 tiny titans of the silver screen. Children are really valued and encouraged to be children as long as they can here in Singapore. If you ever get here again - you need to head out to the parks and further outside the city center to see the amazing flora and fauna, and the best way is on the top of a Double Decker.. cheapest way to see Singapore - the buses are just as clean as the MRT trains and stations. We will be following y'alls continued adventures!

If you are a law abiding person, you are welcome to live in Singapore. It is because Singapore still has corporal punishment. A naughty high school student (18 year old) from the US who studied in the International school in Singapore. He sprayed some paint onto a car and broke the glass of the car. He was sentenced for corporal punishment.

I had a 12hr stopover in Singapore and took the free courtesy 2hr City tour and slept 8hrs at the hotel airport, the airport was amazing. Thanks for your excellent video Stay safe, enjoy

I’m fortunate. My wife was born and raised in Singapore and still has numerous aunts, uncles and cousins there. So when we visit (two or three times a year, at least in pre-CoVid times), we spend time with them and get out among the local population. In all the times I’ve been to Sing, I’ve never been to Newton (tourist trap) and we went to Orchard once, just to say we did. Instead, we spend time in Chinatown in the various nooks and crannies, in Katong, since my late mother-in-law was born there, in Toa Payoh where the relatives are, and in places where we can get out into nature (Bukit Timah, MacRitchie Reservoir, Southern Ridges). For eating, our favorites are Laksa in Roxy Square (far better than 328 Katong), char Kuay Teow in Hong Lim, stingray and satay at Chomp Chomp, though just this past Monday, on the night before we left, we had some great satay at Bedok 85. The thing about Singapore is that there are a lot of these nooks and crannies around the city where tourists are pretty much unheard of, but have really interesting histories.

I'm originally from the UK and have lived in Singapore for over 20 years and I really enjoyed watching your video, it really is a great place to visit and live. You're right it's not a liberal country like many other places as they do have strong traditional family values here which I personally think is a good thing. And as you correctly stated, it is illegal to sell chewing gum here and the simple reason is it keeps the sidewalks clean! Anyway, enjoy you travels around the world, I recommend Thailand & Vietnam if you haven't been! Cheers Mark

Next time you visit, try seeing the non-tourist stuff. Maybe visit the rest of the main island or another island that comprises the 55 islands that make up Singapore. Plenty of walks, eg southern ridges, east coast, labrador and changi boardwalks, botanic gardens, hundreds of green areas and parks. Maybe try a history trail. Visit a hot springs. Wander around one of the towns that actually make up Singapore, looking at the infrastructure of well thought out town planning. Stop by a local food place and chat with the locals, enjoying some great local food. Try the local coffee with its unique roasting and bean blends from Java, Sumatra and indeed Vietnam. Enjoy a cold Tiger beer with some locals and get an insight into another side of Singapore. Travel the island on the buses and look out and see what makes Singapore tick. While it is a leading financial centre, it is also a leading industrial complex with maritime industries. Take a walk along a road through an oil refinery. Visit a world class migratory bird wetland complex. Keep an eye out for wildlife, there is lots of it. Much to do see and enjoy in Singapore, but it takes time, which many tourists end up regretting they didn't take.

I agree with you, thete are so many things to see in Singapore. Ten days are not enough to cover them all. Btw, I think Singapore has 64 islands (or 65 including Pedra Branca Island). In addition, they also have man-made islands.

Great video. Two small corrections though: 1. We can chew gum in Singapore just that it can't be sold here except for medical reasons. If you chew gum just make sure to get rid of it properly. 2. The music at the Gardens by the Bay changes depending on what is happening. Maybe it is Christmas now. Recently I visited and thoroughly enjoyed the dramatic orchestra music they put on. Lastly, just curious why did you say that the LBQT Community is not well supported here?

LAKE! Started watching your vids today. I'm 78 and retired. I really like the funny interchange between you and your wife - keep it up! I retired at 75 since my family history is of long lived people. I've watched many vids over the years and your's is the first one that has prompted me to reach out. So far, I've watched 12 of your vids. My wife and are not the world traveling type - we have an RV and a mountain cabin and that keeps us busy. However, from time to time we travel to PV in Mexico for a change of pace. Your sincerity and real-person feeling shines through and that's why we will continue watching your vids. Likely we will never travel beyond Mexico so your vids about places to see in Mexico are of the most interest. I was an engineer by trade, consequently your spreadsheets and PP Charts I found very interesting.

actually gardens by the bay supertree light show music changes monthly basis. I think the disney theme is to fit the school holiday and christmas season. But on other months there could be opera, musicals, movie theme or local music thrown in the mix. but thanks for the kind comments on my home country and maybe come back again to go deeper into the residential area for more nitty-gritty stuff.

Chewing of gum or having gum in Singapore is not illegal. It is illegal to sell chewing gum except for medical reasons. However, throwing gum on floor would consider litter which will result in very heavy fines... $300 for first time, $1500 second and more subsequently and even public services.

Glad you enjoyed Singapore. My first time there was in '95. I moved there in '97-'01. Since then, have gone back every year to visit and hang with friends. It's such a beautiful and impressive country. So much about the country I wish the world, especially my homeland (US) would emulate. Of course not everything is perfect there, but what they have accomplished since independence in 1965 is truly a wonder. Anyway, I always feel I'm like Singapore's pr rep amongst my friends and others. Oh, I love the place so much, I married a Singaporean. Just celebrated our 9th anniversary. Next trip there (we live in Florida) is August '23. Cheers.

Safety I think is really one of the things I really appreciate living here, you can walk home or take a cab in the wee hours and nothing will happen. Light Show at Super Tree Groves (Gardens By The Bay) don't just play "Hi Ho, Hi Ho". They can't be playing the same tune every night. They do play themes from Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Broadway, Classic Standard Jazz. Depending on which Festive season, they will play Christmas tunes, Traditional Chinese New Year music etc...Spend more time here and you will not be limited to hearing "Hi Ho Hi Ho". Welcome.

You should visit the public libraries in Singapore, they encourage literacy , all are welcome to sit and read.Easily accessible to tourist are the Orchard Library Above Somerset MRT and the amazing art library in the Esplanade(the spiky structure that you can see from the River opposite Marina Bay).Free air -condition as well.

Pro-tip: 1) Visit Marina Bay & Gardens By the Bay at NIGHT 2) Visit heartland areas e.g. Woodlands, Tampines, Yishun for cheap good local food & just to experience how it's like being a local living there 3) SG doesn't have a legit "countryside" but you can try going to Lim Chu Kang area where there's a lot of farms, a wetland reserve, visit Pulau Ubin or check out villages that still exist in Kampong Buangkok.

We really enjoyed our visit to Singapore. We stayed at the Marina Bay Sands and got to swim in the rooftop pool. The biggest issue we had was the heat and humidity. It was sweltering by 11 AM. It is definitely a controlled environment ruled by one person, but with almost no crime and amazingly clean. We know several people that live there and they were able to show us around and where the best hawker (low-priced food) stands were.

Singapore is most definitely not ruled by one person. It has a parliamentary system. The voter turnout is consistently over 90% during elections (95.8% in 2020). I do agree that Singapore can get unbearably hot and humid, especially in the middle of the year. The US west coast certainly has lovely weather, but summer in the US east coast can be unbearably hot and humid too. Thank goodness for air conditioning!

I've been visiting Singapore since the 1980s. I'll be back there in Feb/Mar of 2023. It has come a long way in recent decades. You can indeed have a fairly good look around in just a few days. I did that myself because my very first visit was only a day and a half. *If your time in Singapore is limited, you should focus on the sights and attractions around Marina Bay.* Definitely visit the beautiful *rooftop bar* at the *Marina Bay Sands Hotel.* The night-time views of the neon lights of Singapore are wondrous. There is a cover charge to enter the bar (around $25), but the price comes with a voucher for one drink. (Expect to pay upwards of $20 for a beer or basic glass of wine up there, so it's _not_ cheap, even if it is beautiful.) Other good spots for a drink or meal are the must-see *Raffles Singapore* or the members-preferred *American Club,* but neither are near the water or have a view. On the opposite side of Marina Bay (opposite the Marina Bay Sands Hotel) is the *Merlion Statue* and other Singapore landmarks like the majestic and colonial-style *Fullerton Hotel,* so check those out as well. If you plan on visiting *Gardens By The Bay,* which is situated directly behind the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, go at night, not in the daytime. At night it is much more colourful and impressive. And, yes, the evening light show with music is very popular and looks spectacular. The garden itself looks a little bit artificial, in common with a lot of modern Singapore, but you can also go to the *Singapore Botanic Gardens,* which is a more natural type of landscape, but it is not centrally located, whereas Gardens By The Bay is very central. *One of my truly favourite activities in Singapore is simply to walk across any of the bridges. I would recommend the Helix Bridge, the Jubilee Bridge, or the impressive multi-lane Benjamin Sheares Bridge, which has a lot of traffic.* (All of those bridges allow pedestrian traffic, too.) The views you get from any of those bridges is very nice because all of them cross Marina Bay. Before Marina Bay was created using reclaimed land, the main waterway in Singapore was the *Singapore River.* It leads off Marina Bay and has a very lively spot called the *Boat Quays,* which contains many bars and restaurants. It is interesting to find an Irish pub on the Boat Quays when I consider that during my first visits to Singapore in the 1980s I was usually the only white person around. (Nowadays there are a lot of expats from places like Australia and the UK working in banking and commerce and finance in Singapore.) A couple more points: For shopping and fashions, everyone goes to *Orchard Road,* which is now massive. It has more shops and shopping centres than you would ever care to explore, unless you're in Singapore indefinitely. If your stay in Singapore is more than a couple of days, look at some of the attractions a little further afield. The main one would be *Sentosa Island,* which is very attractive and popular with kids and families. It has a beach and a Universal Studios theme park. Alternatively, you can walk across *the causeway from Singapore to Malaysia.* Of course you can take a bus across the causeway, but you can also walk across, which is approximately 1km in length. Your arrival point in Malaysia is *Johor Bahru,* which is very modern and clean. (The walk from Singapore to Malaysia is a classic day-trip. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.) To discover *multi-cultural Singapore* or some of the more traditional places, visit the colourful temples such as the Buddhist and Hindu houses of worship. There's a Hindu temple called *Sri Miriamman* near Chinatown, which is one very popular example and is very richly decorated and eye-catching. Another option is to head over towards the waterfront at the *Straits of Singapore,* a beautiful waterway with huge numbers of cargo ships packed into this narrow stretch of ocean.

On my first visits in the 1980s, taxi cabs were so cheap. I would wander around and never worry if I became lost because a $2 taxi ride would get me back to familiar surroundings every time!

A really good vlog - you have captured the essence of a first timer's visit to Singapore pretty well. I would have included Boat Quay (great for outdoor dining) and something that blew me away on my first visit: the interconnected malls from the Mandarin Oriental, Marina Square, Millenia Mall to Suntec City. I visited SG, HK, KL and BKK a lot in the late 90s for work and SG was always the most relaxed city to visit and work. Also the most expensive!

We (spouse, daughter, & I) were there 5 years ago, also for a few days. Great place. It is a high control society. That is what gets all features you talked about. (Clean, low crime, no protests) Follow the strict rules and things go well for you. That being said, I would love to go back and visit for a longer time, ~1-3 months.

The light show at Gardens by the Bay by default is using signature classical pieces. You must have gone on a night with a special theme. Maybe Disney. They also conducted Star Wars before during the Force Awakens period. During Xmas, there would be Xmas music and so no. So you have stumbled on a thematic night.

So true…I can think of a couple of things that someone might find objectionable about my country (US). Having just returned from 2 months in The Philippines, I can say that there were a few things that I could ‘complain’ about… But I refuse to be one of those ‘Foreigners’ that complains about everything and offers suggestions (often rudely) about ‘better’ ways of doing things. Here’s my take on it - there are problems, issues and differences everywhere you go. Adaptability is key to successful living no matter where you go. Patience is also essential because you, generally, cannot effect change; you can simply acquire methods of efficiency for doing things if you’re there long enough. If you find that you can’t accept a place for the way it is - do yourself and the locals a favor - Go home.

As someone who has lived in Singapore and the UK, i really appreciate the no gum rule as it keeps our streets clean! Hahaha. We don’t sell gum here mainly for cleanliness of our country so that cleaners wont have to spend hours scraping gum off any surface. But if we do want gum, it’s just next door in Malaysia which we can get to under an hour on a good day!

I think the locals were playing Chinese chess in Chinatown. Chewing gum is not allowed to be sold but it’s ok to chew if u have some. Just don’t spit it on the ground or stick it anywhere u like when u dispose of it (the reason for the ban in the past). 😅 There’s a video on the construction of Jewel on KZbin. It’s an architectural marvel in itself.

oh ... many have suggested visit the botanical gardens .. that is nice ... i'd suggest, visiting 'Gardens by the bay', in day time ... there are nurseries, greenhouses, that at different times of the years, feature different faunas, from different countries... eg: the sakuras from Japan, etc ... and the orchid gardens etc ...

For your information, you can chew gum in Singapore; but selling gum is illegal unless it's medicated gum sold at pharmacies or at the dentist's/doctor's clinics. However, if you do chew gum, make sure you dispose of it properly in the rubbish bin. Sad that you've just 2 days here, should stay at least 5 days to a week for the best experience.

Singapore is certainly a lovely place to visit. I was surprised that you opted for a ride share from the airport since the metro is so efficient. It's a very clean country and, unlike most North American cities, I never saw a single homeless person. Perhaps their hard approach to drug dealing ( the death penalty) has something to do with that.

I was in Hong Kong some years back and they are easily spotted spending their night in Macdonalds. I took the chance to spot in some in Singapore heartland Macdonalds after this and voila, there are a few. However, that was the pre-covid era where there was alot of macdonalds operating round the clock.

We do get this a lot, according to the law, it is illegal to sell or distribute chewing gum and of course improper disposal (littering). Nicotine gum is actually permitted but only if you have a prescription. As for the music at gardens by the bay, you just got unlucky, normally it's pretty good. I guess with daily shows, they may have been short on material. Better luck next time!

I'm afraid you are wrong about the gum. Now standard chewing gum I don't know. But nicotine gum is OK. You can only get it from a chemist with a pharmacist's recommendation , you can only get the over the top minty variety, and it is very expensive. But it is definitely available.

We were only in Singapore for 3 days on transfer to Bali. We really enjoyed Singapore and we’ll be back to discover more. Very clean, friendly people, felt safe and amazing! We didn’t get to see the sights in Changi Airport as it wasn’t close to our arrival point, and that area was closed when we left for Bali. Next time.

I think our favourite part of Singapore was...yes, you guessed it, the food at the hawker centres! When we were at Gardens by the Bay, the music during the light show was all famous opera music. I really like this video... You guys gave your honest opinion on what's good in Singapore and what needs to be improve in Singapore without being judgemental. I am not Singaporeans but i lived there during my teenage years.. and to see how much the country has grown, it's really touch my heart in a good way. There are many countries around the world who claim that they are diverse or acknowledge diversity but in actuality, it is obvious discrimination is happening everywhere... What i love about Singapore is their diversity is reflected everywhere, from the food, the mosque, the hindu temple, the chinese temple, all can co exist in one area... I guess action speaks louder than words.. and hopefully LGBTQ will be accepted soon.. we as human race has to mature and evolve... I would just like to correct the general misconception that chewing gums is forbidden in Singapore. Surprisingly, to chew gums is allowed, hurrah! The caveat is that you must discard the chewed gums properly (like into a bin) instead of spitting them out on the floor. So, you're welcomed to chew gums in Singapore!

The one thing every visitor to Singapore gets wrong is the No Chewing Gum Law. It's illegal to sell or bring in large quantities of Chewing Gum with the intention to sell Chewing Gum. Its perfectly legal to chew Gum or bring a few sticks of Gum for personal consumption.

Nice video! But that's Chinese chess btw instead of mahjong and you can definitely say 'no' in Singapore! What you have visited are the most touristy places in Singapore and most of the shopkeepers that you have encountered came from mainland China and they are not even Singaporeans. Chewing gum is not an offense except in places where food is restricted- MRT, Busses Disposing of the gum is also best done in the trash bins. Buying and selling gum is illegal, but you can bring in some for personal consumption.

Love that you loved it here and hearing your personal opinion makes me proud. haha yes accommodation can be on the high side here because land is at a premium but glad you found Lyf. haha It's illegal to SELL gum but it's ok to possess and chew some kinds of gum (the kind for quitting smoking) but on the whole, no one really chews gum. :) Agreed on the LGBTQ community... we're slowllllllyyy (very slowlyyyyy) making progress and trying to get there. I have many LGBT friends and do feel bad for them. It'll really be nice if you get a chance to visit one of our HDB homes to see what public housing is like! :)
