So many of us spend our days sitting at a desk. But are you worried that sitting down all day might have a negative impact your running?
Whilst we know that lack of movement can bring adverse health implications, many of us believe that by running we’re counteracting these effects. However going out for a run after sitting all day can lead to injuries and even long term health problems.
So today Rick Kelsey and The Running Channel's resident physiotherapist Manni Ovola will take you through some simple exercises you can do every day to help you move better during your run and prevent those injuries.

These are great! I'll definitely start moving more at work and making sure I'm hydrated. I've just started a full time desk job and due to the 45 min car journey to work I've found I'm never in the mood for running in the evenings. I've started getting up early to run before work two days a week and go for a longer run at the weekend. I actually look forward to those two weekdays because of how awesome I feel for the rest of the day despite the early morning!

Good video, I do a fair bit of sitting during the day, and at 65 notice some stiff joints and tight calfs, so I try to keep moving the legs and feet with gentle stretching while sitting, I also have 5-10 min dynamic warm up before going out and then usually walk for 5 mins before starting to run..

Thanks for watching and this is a really great question. When you wake up and go for a run your muscles should be more relaxed, but it's definitely important to warm up before you start running. We've got a great video with some warm up exercises you can do: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4vJf6d7qbihhqs. Hope this helps!

Great video, thanks guys! I have a question ... I'm trying to build up my strength and flexibility before I restart running and ultimately training for my first marathon. When training for a half, I got shin splints in one leg after doing too much too soon and being weaker in one side. These exercises are great, so what else can I do to avoid a shin splint comeback?

That's a great point Den, and definitely worth pointing out that not everyone sits down at an office job. Your muscles will definitely be more warmed up than someone who's been sitting all day. Try noting your posture during the day as this could have a bearing on your run later - and certainly can't hurt to try some of the exercises Manni suggests in the video. Hope this helps

Similar, but different. I've often wondered if working nightshift has any effect on my running. Additionally, is there any difference between running before work vs running after, and does that change at all when you're up all night for work. Should I run in the evenings when I wake up, or after I get off early in the morning before bed? I've assumed it's more personal preference, but still curious.
@runningchannel
@runningchannel 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely more of a personal preference Richard - do what's right for you and your lifestyle. The important thing to remember is to get some movement during the day and make sure you warm up before you go out for a run - whether that's in the morning or at night. Hope this helps
