I’m an old collector at 48 years old. The very first pack I opened was a 1979 Topps baseball pack when I was a little 6 year old. My problem with the hobby today, is all these unnecessary sets flooding the market, as well as all the money revolving around it. Collecting for fun is slowly getting phased out by flippers and crooks making counterfeit cards and slabs. I quit collecting after the junk wax era in combination of the baseball strike in the early 90’s. I’ve barely came back to the hobby some months ago, but I’m really ready to leave it again. I’m also seeing a lot of card value manipulation going on as well (sports card investor). It’s just becoming a huge racket. Add backyard breaks to this drama…
@scsmith46042 жыл бұрын
Same here. I'm 50 and am having the same issues. Not only the unnecessary sets but all of the "parallels" inside of the sets are driving me crazy. Why is a card that is the same as the base card worth more just because it has a different border on it? Like you, I just came back in to help my 8-year-old son. That was a frustration trying to get him a base Topps Baseball set without spending $150 on Jumbo Packs. Just decided to buy the factory set for him and let him buy a pack here or there and encourage him to buy his favorite players. For my collecting, I made the decision to not buy wax at all and just collect autographed cards of players I like which are usually players who are retired or played during the 60s-early 2000s.
@ChefRonnieBoy2 жыл бұрын
@@scsmith4604 The base cards are the true rc’s, not the parallels, but those get the most love. If there going to throw parallels in a set, just make them of the base card, imo. Making parallels of insert sets as well, is way too much!

The most important thing fanatics can do for the hobby is weed out the breakers and resellers by selling directly to consumers… there is nothing worse for collectors than having to pay 3x for over printed, million different parallel sets that are guaranteed to be worth less than you bought them for, from these middle men that are somehow able to get an unlimited supply while everyone else has to scavenge for affordable packs.

The impact of the pandemic was probably a once in a lifetime event on the hobby which resulted in major increases in card values for a majority of cards. Performance can impact card values both positively and negatively, but not always. It depends on the player, the card, etc.. As you mentioned Giannis winning the MVP and the Championship didn't result in his cards going up. That's because in the previous couple years many of his RC's had already skyrocketed in value anticipating an MVP. On the other hand Shohei Ohtani's rookies, autos skyrocketed in value from his MVP season. In 2019-2020 his card values had dropped from seasons not meeting expectations. So performance doesn't always impact card values the same way.

@@shakascloset1700 Happy to do it :) ...We all collect what we enjoy and that's the point of the hobby, I collect cards from the 80's that I had as a kid, they aren't valuable at all but they bring back a lot of good memories so I enjoy it - There's no right or wrong way to collect. But I always hate it when I see those blow hards talking others down like their collection is so amazing and yours sucks...The odds are ole Mike doesn't have any of the stuff he claimed to have, and isn't the big shot business owner living in a multi million dollar home that he claimed either - if he was all that he wouldn't be spending his time on youtube attacking strangers :)

Card prices absolutely raise by performance but the performance needs to be more consistent and continual. Look at Burrow etc. The Yannis cards you speak of already maxed out due to great PERFORMANCE before his Championship which was expected to be won by most collectors. If performance does not influence price then why is my Kevin White RC not nearly as valuable as my Jaamar Chase RC? It’s performance based but you need a somewhat consistent performance as people are not dumb enough to by or invest into a player who simply did one good thing a couple times. From the Beckham catch to Herbert’s Rookie year, performance is the base of value and it alters by the overall market interest at that time.
@509boxbreaks42 жыл бұрын
You make some interesting points and I agree with most of them. One area I partially disagree is that a players in game performance does not affect their card value. Now if a player has already hit their “ceiling” in terms of value than an MVP season or Championship might not increase their value. But if a player was under performing or undervalued, plays for the right market, has some swag and starts to perform well in games his value will go up. I think the reason card prices dropping is mostly because they were just over produced. I am a hockey collector and the value of cards have not dropped and in fact went up in most cases. If a player has a good week, sometimes just a good game his value will increase 15 to 20% in no time. The supply is limited and the demand is there for top performers. The three major sports just got over inflated and have came back to earth. I agree with you they won’t recover to their highest price points. I think collectors and investors just have to make smart purchases and think outside the box. There are always no brainer buys out there with huge upside. Don’t buy when everyone else is buying and sell when the market is over paying and you will be just fine.

I never understood what made a card go up or down - it's usually hype. There is nothing except the artistic value that should make them have any real value. I remember when Fransico Cabrera won the NLCS his Rookie Cards were $5 the next day at my local card shop.

If somebody needs to be told what trading cards to buy, my first question for them would be "why are you here?". Calling such people "in the hobby" is stretching it, because a true hobbyist would do their own legwork in researching things. A lot of people who've gotten back into cards after Gary Vee opened his mouth and all these card "investor" channels on YT started popping up are just carpetbaggers. They go from one interest to another, pissing away tons of money, trying to get some sort of high or make a quick buck, but never bother to even try to gain any knowledge of the learning curve. They follow the herd and buy at the top of the market. The moment the news, or some influencer tells them the next fad thing (NFT's anyone?), they're gone, leaving behind a basement full of relics from their previous failed endeavor, only to go get FOMO'd and FUD'ed out of their money again. These people aren't hobbyists, or even investors. They're marks. Hopefully, some of you reading got some of their cash when they stopped through.

Agreed with a lot of what you said but to say on the field or on the court performance has very little to do with values? Winning a championship and performing big in a championship series or super bowl or World Series will typically shoot values up quite a bit. At least if my memory serves me correctly. It’s not like guys that are average are increasing in value. Big stats and winning equals value

The card market went up because of Covid. All these people that were not into the hobby are at home doing nothing on their phone investing into cards now. This is why the hobby went up. People with tons of money starting driving all these prices through the roof. Now that people are out doing things again is the reason why the market has corrected itself. If you bought cards during that time you over paid.
