After realizing "SWIMMING" in Starfield was not REAL, I started collecting a list of features that SHOULD be present and, in fact, was present in bethesdas' last games, but for this latest one they decided to remove and/or downgrade.
Swimming, ammo crafting, weapon mod swapping, horse/vehicle riding, show owners paying attention, companion commands, infinite storage, base building, weapon crafting, dual wielding and so much more!

The answer would be; a committee. It's pretty obvious the game was either completely restarted a few times or they had groups of people who decided certain factors in the game and then just pushed it all together in haste and what we have is a frankenstein of a game that would have been great 10 years ago, not so much today.

morrowind had underwater swimming with fish and plants and treasures to find even underwater dungeons since you could cast waterbreathing and it even had local map in a minimap. Morrowind came out in 2002. In fact there is a mod for new vegas that adds a minimap and the game will draw a map for indoors and outdoors in your minimap just like morrowind, same engine, the technology is there they choose not to use it. In morrowind every npc had a unique game and they were all killable.

My List :) No Vats - No Gore - No diving - borked Stealth - No Weapon/Armor Repairing(Durability System) - No Building your own Ship/Equipment from Material you Mined/Gathered - No real End-Game Goals - No Transmog - No making your own Contraband - NPCs not dropping what they wear - Can't open Doors, defuse Mines, use Items... when in Scan Mode - Can't control jump height. NPCs can do that. A Charge up Meter is really needed on some Moons, or you fly off like a Rocket - Boost Packs are not really suitable ever/meaning that you need different kinds of Boosters for different Situations but also you need Resistances against Korrosion, Air, Radiation, Bio, and somewhat level conforming Laser, EMP, Bullet Resistance = you need 12+ Boost Packs - Crafting and Building Copy Paste from FO4 but with worse placement control - Awful Controls overall. The game works on GamePad but you need your whole Keyboard if you choose to play on the Keyboard. Make ready to rebind 50 Keys and ignore Conflicts - Very few and lackluster Feats - You should start with level one on each Skill - Skills need to be way more "Exotic". ATM they are mostly "more DMG, can Craft, can buy, can fly - Item Feats are mostly useless and are Copy Paste from FO4 - Skill progression is mostly forgettable and unimaginative - EXP from discovering, Hacking, building, crafting is nearly not existent - Item Notifications gone after 1.5sec = can't check Stats = open Inventory - Carry Capacity sucks - You can't mark individual Items to look/track for - You can't undo all tracking Items - Inventory Menu sucks! StarUI Mod needed = modding mandatory or wasting hours unnecessarily - Can't use Cure Object in Affliction Screen. Again StarUI Mandatory - Not showing "Weather(Corrosion/Radiation...)" Conditions on Planet before landing- Map is awful - Quests send you to places you can't reach - Lifeless Planets are useless - Copy pasted Bases/Caves... no sign of prcedurally generated Locations - Often looking to Scan "Natural Wonder" that I already Scanned because it's not identifyable from the Picture - Planet Map shows 100% scanned even if it's not because of "Costal Area" - Escort Quests that have you travel 1000m+ for low reward - You can't ban Useless Items from Scanner - Rare/Legendary/Epic Items cause 2sec Game Freeze when Equiped and changing to Scanner or cyceling through Weapons - Space Combat at least unskilled at early Levels is pure Stats Game and often undoable because 3v1 - No feeling of actually flying through Space - You still get Stuck and can not jump when on angled Ground as in FO4/Skyrim/Oblivion... - NPC Money should be infinite or at least increased by 4x - Items you pick up/have in Inventory show the worth they have when you buy them from a Merchant, but they should show what they are worth to you, when you sell them - NPC standing on Pilot Seat so only 3rd Person Space Flight or piloting through gap between NPCs Legs - Enemies/Animals on Planet stacked in a Heap, so you think you will fight 3, but it ends up being 12 or more all stacked into one tiny Spot and into each other - Melee Combat as bad as it was in any other Bethesda Game (look what modders did to Skyrims Combat Animations) - Reloading gets Canceled by running and jumping - Typical Bethesda Bullet-Sponge Enemies - Typical run around/jump over Obsacles and slowly chip away their Health - In Ship flight you need to be able to make custom Presets for "Full Power Weapons, Grav Drive, Engines, Shields..." and bind them to F1-F4 or any other Key you choose - Needs City/Outpost/Other Listing on Star-Map to find the Locations + placement of own nameable Markers - Needs Button to stop Quests from coming in. I get 5 new Quests when running around doing one Quest. I don't know how I got the Quests. I don't know who the Quests are from. I have no connection to them. - NPCs need to stop talking over each other. It just can't be too complicated to program in that only one Voice can be played at once. - Finding Quests is a Nightmare. They need to be Structured much better. Time when Quest received/Location of Quest Giver/Nearby Quests/Location of Quest/Radiant Quest... - Still can't go from Sneak to normal Mode whilst doing any other action / meaning Stealth play feels Crap. Sneak to someone with a Melee Weapon, hit them 1 time, wait for Animation to finish, press "Crouch" Key, wait for your Character to stand up, and engage in Comabt. 1995... 19 F*cking 95!!! - I have been playing the Game for 60 hours now and am Level 30 and still I find the same Fire Axe I found on Level 4 over and over 21 DMG - When on the Map Screen, there has to be a Warning that you can not travel at this moment - I am SEETHING because I activated a Mission but the Game decided to not show me that Mission at all, but two other Missions I do not want to do - I decided to do one of the Missions to see what happens... I now have FOUR Map markers. WTF! And I am not allowed to activate even two Missions - Buy Back Disabled as soon as you leave Shopping Window - Can't pay the debt from Dream Home Perk - Game does not tell you what Skills do until you unlock the Line. That means that you can't work to a specific Skill and know its effect - I managed to lock up the Menu by opening and closing it in quick succession. - Can't move after Loading-Screen, but the NPCs can - Crafting is a F*ing JOKE! You dump Skill points and Materials into upgrading but then you look at something like "You can now add a +5 Resistances Mod to Your Jump Pack". And that one cost me 2 Skill Points btw. No mention of that beforhand! - No Planet Wiki showing me what Planet I have been on and what I found on that Planet (Alien Species, "Geysers", Flora...) - No Crafting of Weapons, Armor, Drugs, that are not already in the Game to find - No Enhancement of Weapon/Armor Mods (Stuff like increase chance to poison Enemy by+5%, by "infusing Weapon with 500 Material X, next 5% cost you 1000, next 5% cost you 2000, next 5% cost you 4000... something to make Mining Stuff on Planets useful)- No Melee Weapon Mods - No Melee Weapon Differences in behavior - Can we have 8k+ Planet Pictures for our "Space Journey"? - Just three Slots for Character Itemization (Not promising for what Variety Mods will be able to offer) - Timescale is F*ed when on some Planets. Wait 1 hour(time-unit) passes a VERY long time. Like wait "24 hours" = wait 2400 hours. WHO the F thought this was a good idea?! - Hold Key for every second Option, but sitting down "just works"

Yes. It also lacks a lot of... What some call, Verisimilitude and Shandification. Basically, the world doesn't seem very probable. It comes off more like a game than a living world. They do okay with verisimilitude for the most part, but I agree 100% when it comes to factions. Fallout 4 actually did factions better and Starfield returns to the “you can join all the factions” paradigm that plagued Skyrim. Being able to join the Red Fleet while still being a member in good standing in the Vanguard is dumb, and being a Ranger in good standing while constantly breaking the law as a member of Ryojin seems weird. Heck, even being able to be a Ranger and a Vanguard at the same time seems odd. If you join one organization, you should not realistically be able to join another without alienating the first. I’ve heard that supposedly Todd doesn’t like characters being limited like this, but being able to be a member of competing organizations with diametrically opposed goals should eventually lead to negative consequences and this not happening does indeed feel very “gamey”. Definitely there could be more shandification in Starfield, though. You have to go all the way back to Oblivion and Fallout 3 for really good shandification in a Bethesda game (Skyrim did okay, though). Don’t get me wrong - I’m really enjoying Starfield, but it does have its own flaws and weirdness that just draws you out of the game sometimes.

THIS. It seems contrived, like so many games/movies/entertainment now. The formula for AAA studios is "Woke 4K" - make it pretty, make it gay, the MSM/SM algorithms will make it sell no matter what, and that's it. The "cities", "factions", and "gear", etc are all afterthoughts. And if you don't make it woke, your game will be derided for all time. Might still sell, but it might not, and in this economy it makes sense to take the conservative approach (how ironic), and get that woke in there. Superfluous environments, costume designs, and storylines to highlight the "non-white STRAWNG women" are given 90% of the man-hour budget, so gameplay, plausibility, and originality suffer immensely. No matter your politics, you have to admit this has gone WAY too far. Games, movies, basically all forms of entertainment, and most of everything else are heavily incentivized to put DEI at the forefront and little else, because the "Arbiters of Inclusivity and Social Justice" (MSM/SM/reddit mods) will promote them and cancel all critics if they do so, actual quality/entertainment value of said product notwithstanding, and the companies have figured this out. Look at Cyberpunk. A total disaster, absolute shit AI, extremely limited functionality of most styles of play that were so heavily hyped - BUT "strong non-white female BOSS" in the gameplay teaser, along with lots of pretty colors and several hints of gay, and that was all it took. The hype machine went into overdrive, critics were censored, and HUGE money was made. Starfield has basically copied that script and it was a massive success. This formula will only continue to spread as companies seek to reduce headcounts after FY '23 ends, and we will see greater and more overt reliance on "DEI in your face, straight white man!" trailers/previews to trigger The Holy Algorithm and boost sales on IP that is produced with "AI assistance", with lots of spinoffs and repackaged assets that are all but devoid of actual creativity. The rise of AI-powered DEI ( iDIE™ , probably, lol) is upon us, and soon we will see "platform de-platforming" begin to take hold, as The Left seeks out new ways to flex it's power. Think Windows/Sony refusing to allow Steam to run because it is "non-compliant with DEI initiatives" aka, it doesn't censor/ban people enough, or Intel/AMD refusing to run Windows because "it allows people who are likely white, based on AI powered demographic insights ( iDIE™), to use the N-word". It's coming.

My biggest bugbear with this "next-gen PC game" is that mouse and keyboard controls feel like such an afterthought. Everything - player controls, menu controls, building controls - was designed for a controller first, and then mouse and keyboard were hacked on top of that, almost as if upon the assumption that a mouse and keyboard are exactly the same as a controller. This is why the keyboard walk speed is so pathetically slow - it's literally the slowest you can move with an analogue stick. This is why overhead camera controls in outpost building mode feels so unnatural with a mouse.

I don't know mods can make something like Skyrim look actually beautiful. Though by no means am I using that as an excuse for Bethesda, it's just in my opinion that's probably as far as Starfield could get is a facelift, if the rest of the foundation of the game is really this bare bones, there's not much of a foundation in the first place for Modders to really build off on. What did you expect? When the trailer from the game came out, people pointed out that the double-barrel shotgun was ejecting whole unused bullets during reload. What did Bethesda do to solve this issue? Instead of just replacing the meshes with proper spent shell casings, they made the bullets vanish inside the gun after firing and deleted the shell ejection portion of the reload animation altogether. They then renamed the ammunition for the double-barrel and called it "Caseless" ammunition. Also, if you look at the official trailers, you can see that the bullets fired from the automatic guns are randomly appearing out of nowhere "outside" or "around" the gun itself--not from the end of the gun's barrel. They also magically head straight to where your crosshair is pointed, even if your gun is not yet pointed at the target because of an ongoing movement animation. I've played for 200 hours just to get a real feel for the game compared to the 1000's of hours I've had in its predecessors, and I think I've got enough bones in the game to confirm that yes, Starfield is downgraded Skyrim. By a significant margin. The build mechanics aren't just "Downgraded Fallout," they're _barely even there_ by comparison. Fallout's build mechanics were _insane._ Starfield has practically no bones to it. I can't exactly say that I "enjoyed" this game, given how much modding and console editing I had to do just to make the game enjoyable. I don't think I'll be playing anymore unless something significant changes. The imagination of Bethesda is dead. More than a few people are speculating that the "delay" the game went through was a semi-reboot that basically eviscerated whatever they'd been working on up until that point. Some guy on Reddit pointed out that the "Fuel" system is completely worthless, but that there are entire subsystems in the game (like environment hazards) that hint at the game being far more Survival-oriented, including the game having fuel usage as a requirement. That's exactly how this game feels. Half-done, underbaked, neutered. I almost wish it was as buggy as the old games. At least that would be entertaining.

I feel like what people often overlook with Starfield is that measuring it against previous titles for parity is still a failure. It's a game that is 12 years newer than Skyrim. 12 YEARS! It should far exceed Skyrim in every possible way. I feel it just doesn't and that's why the game felt flat and boring to me. It has marginal improvements in some areas and falls short in others, and overall just feels like a very comparable and average title....to a game that came out 12 years ago!

Honestly, I feel that Starfield is a downgrade by 90% compared to Fallout 4. The dialogue system is literally a downgrade even compared to Skyrim. What Bethesda doesn't understand is that the issue with Fallout 4 wasn't having a voiced protagonist and mini animations; the problem was having a voiced protagonist with stupid dialogues, especially the sarcastic options, which were anything but sarcastic. The combat system is another further downgrade. We went from having Fallout 4 with the ability to damage body parts, destroy them, and have granular aiming, to just having a generic shooter. Even the weapons behave the same. Killing an enemy with a laser or energy weapon has the same effect as killing them with a ballistic weapon. In Fallout 4, depending on the type of weapon, enemies could be disintegrated, burned, turned into ash, or a green plasma mass. Exploration is another downgrade to the point where it literally doesn't exist in the game. I think the only improvement over Fallout 4 is the Disney world. Fallout 4 already has a Disney-like world in terms of theme and narrative, but Starfield literally takes that to another level. I'd say there's not a single terrible thing you can do in the game to make your character detestable or evil. Another downgrade is the player's freedom to decide whom to kill and whom not to. Immortal characters in the game have literally evolved to a point where they're ghosts. Most named characters can't even be harmed.

I'm still enjoying the game 100 hours in, but it is missing a lot of things that I didn't think would be missing. Fallout 4 had a way more in-depth crafting and settlement system than Starfield, which is crazy. They got it basically perfect in Fallout 4, from bringing in random NPCs as settlers to setting up shops in your settlements to running trade caravan routes all over the Commonwealth. Starfield is literally just building an outpost to generate resources and then maybe setting up a supply line to fulfill a mission board contract. Another big thing is that the locations are soooo spread out that there is almost none of the feel of exploration like you got in Fallout/Elder Scrolls. I would get so sidetracked in the older games due to seeing something on the way to a quest location and end up spending 2 hours exploring before finally remembering the quest marker I was going towards.I just don't get that same feeling exploring Starfield. I basically land on a planet, go to 1-2 POIs, realize there is nothing but some settlers/spacers/pirates, fight for a minute, then leave and go do something else. The exploration had to be different in Starfield due to the setting/scale, which I get, but it just doesn't play as well in that area as Fallout/ES games. The POIs need to have a lot bigger pool to draw from as well, IMO. I don't know how many different ones are in the game, but I feel like I've seen the same few multiple times each. From a realism perspective, I could understand the in-game reason being that people settling planets and putting outposts down would have pre-fab modules and buildings that would be functional and quick to build, explaining the repetition of POIs. That could work, but the main issue is that every outpost has the SAME items in the same spots, same notes/computer logs everywhere, and the same dead bodies in the same spots. Mix it up a little, please. The game world also doesn't have the same "lived-in" feel as some of their other games. Don't get me wrong, it still feels plausible and it's a lot better than most open worlds, but it doesn't feel as believable as the Commonwealth, New Vegas, Skyrim, or Cyrodiil. Those felt like living, breathing worlds. Starfield does not, at least most of the time. The NPCs don't have schedules--stores are all open 24/7, NPCs never go to the tavern after their shift (like the NPCs in Whiterun all going to the Bannered Mare after work) or head home and eat/sleep. I can go to Jemison Mercantile any time and the same 2 NPCs will be running the store. I can go to GalBank in New Atlantis and Landry is still there at all hours of the day and night. Same thing on Neon and Akila City. They could've kept the stores/businesses open 24/7, but at least change out the NPCs and show the other NPC going home/out to eat or something. Totally not immersive when the same NPC is always at the store and never leaves. In Diamond City they had this--Diamond City Surplus had an NPC working the store during the day and then a Mr. Handy would keep that one shop open at night. PERFECT solution and one they should consider for Starfield in future updates (just don't use a Mr. Handy, make it a person lol). Those aren't my only concerns with the game, but they are some of my major ones. Again, I'm still enjoying the game, but it went from a 9/10 at launch to an 8/10 two months into the game. I'm hoping BGS can remedy these concerns with future updates and DLC, but I guess we'll see. BGS is still my favorite dev, and I am looking forward to what they bring for the future of the game.

There is this mod called Slower than light, that allows you to fly in system. Mind you, the full modding tools arent out yet, so this is not hard system modification. So, the game engine does have the capacity to see a whole system as a whole, thus I think it can do the same with planets. But Bethesda decided that we should have loading screens everywhere. And as a former Elite player I do understand that is boring to move between planets, regardless of speed, but there are happy mediums. Weird design choices, probably schedule issues and a lot of try to appeal to everyone mentality that never works.

Your title is so click bait bro. Let's imagine for a second that all games were equal both in gameplay & story. The fact that out of the box starfield can run 4k & look like it, while 60-120 FPS & the others can't without mods would mean that it's innately just vastly superior. A game can have decent gameplay & story, but if it can't stand proper in the 4k world then it's not even on the same tier.

New Vegas was is the best game ever made 4 ways to end the game, Your stats matter and can be funny, wearing the cloths of the enemy to get into there camps. Rolling around a planet in a Halo warthog or speeder would have added so much to the game ... BECAUSE ... THERE ... ARE ... RAIDERS ... ie. spacers and crimson fleet. They would be all over different planets ... not just space and interior interactions. The ability to allow settlers to join an outpost would have also added to the game, I mean there is that group of independent settlers who helps people a place to settle. On top of that, spacers and CF would raid your outposts, which I hear is supposed to happen but never has happened to me. In my opinion there are far to many issues with the game to out weight what it does well. Many of the side missions and the main mission are forgettable, the game feels soulless and empty. Yeah the game is "next gen" ... 15 years ago. It's like BGS said "we can do what every other space IP does but better and all in one game" but ended up doing it worse. The writing is such garbage ... SPOILER ... I mean in the opening of the game you go to a terrormorph xenowarfare facility and can kill a terrormorph not far from the facility. Yet when you play through the vanguard storyline, your character is ignorant to terrormorphs and xenowarfare ... WHEN YOU DID A MADATORY MISSION REGARDING THEM AND COULD HAVE KILLED ONE OR TWO BY THEN ... no dialog about coming across a xenowarfare facility or killing a terrormorph. The game is nothing more than one big missed opportunity. By the time BGS releases SF CK and modders do their thing, I will have long forgotten the game even exists.

Obviously, I'm glad that others can and are enjoying the game, but for me, the little things kept piling on way too much for me to enjoy it properly. Add the fact that other space games have done better with fewer resources and I just fully didn't want to play it. I am going to finish the game, but unless some really cool mods come out and the "rumored Mod/DLC shop" isn't a Minecraft Bedrock/Robux paid hellscape.... At least on PC we should be able to craft officially without some store. I just don't know, I just think Starfields scope was a bit too ambitious, and they should have stuck to what they know best which is smaller handcrafted worlds and spaces. The procedurally generated worlds also mask the worlds handcrafted stuff on them, in the UI "which is really bad in Starfield" you can't tell them apart other than the names.

Great thing about starfield is that it’s practically day 1 of its life cycle and instead of locking away their coding for only coding freaks to delve into, Bathesda has enlisted an army of freelance coders to better the game for them where they will then cherry pick the best bits to add to the game as they go. Same can not be said for the “other” space games. For all its flaws, SF is a better and will be even greater game.

I think they should of made a bunch of smaller handcrafted worlds vs 100s of empty ones.... but yes almost every Bethesda game almost feels slightly more and more casual and dumbed down in systems which is upsetting, and worrying about ES6 being rushed. There is a lot of things I like, but a lot of simple things like lack of evil sided companions, too many UI issues to count that even mods haven't fixed for me yet, from crappy maps to "What is a Grendel?" Oh it's a gun, no vehicles/ridable animals, not many diverse weapons, no duel welding guns or swords? Just Why?, Dual Welding is in all the previous games "mods make it even better", I like the backpack shows your SMG you have on you, but pistols just disappear after you sheath them. Swiming is worse then the previous games since you can't dive or really even swim, The backpack just disappears if you jump without a spacesuit on.... I am having fun, but I don't think it is even better then Skyrim or maybe even Fallout 4 which I only beat maybe 5 times & never 100%, I have over 10K hours into Skyrim alone, not to mention Oblivion. This game to me really had to live up to at least modded Fallout or Skyrim, which I almost say it doesn't & I don't know if it will. The rumors of a creation club store coming back as a Minecraft Bedrock like store worries the crap out of me too, hardcore worried. Like important mods like bug patches being put behide a paywall kinda bad. Possibly free community destroying stuff. I am so torn on this game.

Honestly, Starfield feels lazy, rushed, empty and boring. its massively overrated and overhyped. there's no substance, and the only reason you'd get over 40 hours of playtime is because 70 percent of the game is browsing menus, loading screens and running in a straight line just trying to get somewhere. fallout 4 felt lazy compared to skyrim, but this game feels lazy even compared to fallout 4. it has a coat of "ooohh, lookie at me, im new and shiny, fanboys come geeettt mmeeee....!" and thats about it. the game is artificially padded out with time-wasters that only add tedium, just so it can "seem" like there is "content" while its just actively and constantly "stalling" you.

The most frustrating thing about comparing it to Fallout 4 (one of my favs) is that there are so many minor callbacks/similarities that suggest there should be some consistency- From the main character’s gait, the camera angle when approaching a workbench, to the musical score when some event happens.

Here's how I know if I'll like a game or not: if my brother likes it, it's most likely shit. My brother loves Starfield.

Mods should be there to make a great game even better. Garbage doesn't need mods.
