Is TATA Investments a Big Bubble? 🫧

Hi, one example of a holding company trading at a premium to its underlying holdings is Berkshire Hathaway, led by Warren Buffett. Berkshire Hathaway owns a diverse range of subsidiary companies across various industries, including insurance, utilities, railroads, and consumer goods. Diversification and market perception play seems to be at play. Would love to hear your comments on this.

Berkshire is Apple, Coca-Cola, BoA, Chevron and other stuff as it's holdings. If Apple and 2-3 companies underperform the index, the stock will underperform as well. It's different from other holding companies, If you take a historical look at it's holdings, you'll see it's dynamic and does buy and sell stocks in its holdings. Majority stake holders are Investment firms besides Warren himself. And his friends. So it's not a fair comparison.

it is also that these shares are shown as investment in subsidiaries at cost in the balance sheet of the holding companies and hence they will not reflect the market value of these investments and hence reduce the value of investments on the asset side of balance sheet.

Tata Investment is not a holding company . It is like a mutual fund or an AMC, please look at the defination of holding company? Tata sons is the parent or holding company of Tata Investment. but itself invests in all companies including Tata group . So holding company discount will not be applicable. It simply reflects market valuation of its investment. You yourself pulled out the NAV from company's website which is slight old as on 31.12.23. Lot of things happened after that period. At the same time, I am not justifying its over valuation ! Correct me if i am wrong? Though i dont know Hindi STILL I FOLLOW YOU. I am your admirer too. Happy Investing

Thank you SOIC, Kama holdings is having a lot of debt also it seems as per screener p/b is 1.33. I dont mind owning these holding companies when they are huge discount (over 50%) people used to say for tata investments also. Even if they dont sell their investments even then the holding company is still a good investment if you trust the promotors.

NSIL holding company of Jindal Group is trading at lot of discount book value of 20600 and current price is less tan 3600. It is a gem at current price. Tata investment corporation is overvalued and trading 78% above book value while NSIL is holding at less than 75% of book vallue
