After 20 years in secondary teaching I've never seen the profession so toxic. We are micromanaged to within an inch of our lives. I don't care as much about public perception, I just want to be trusted enough to do my job without such an obsession for"data and accountability" hanging over me. The concept of autonomy has vanished alongside my mental health. I'm happy to work my guts out, but not for ticking boxes that give students very little and teachers a breakdown.

It is similar in the U.S. as well. More than 10 teachers at my school quit this year. Since 2020, a lot of teachers have retired or quit. Some are transfering to different school districts and/or grades. Some are switching from teacher role to a teacher assistant then it is less stress on them too

the majority of people have been in the education system and so that seems to give everyone the license to judge and assume they know what it takes to be a teacher in the present climate. Of course they dont and this compounds the feeling of not being respected and undervalued, no other profession is challenged, questioned or scrutinised like teaching by parents and general public who are all educational experts. Let teachers do their jobs and compensate them accordingly.
