When I worked for Nissan, we used a fuel injection cleaner made by 3M, you bypass the fuel rail and run the engine right off the pressurized can. worked great ! especially on the carbon magnet VG30 engines. When I asked the parts rep what was in the 3M cleaner ? he said it's 100% techron. Been using it ever since. Except I put in two bottles per tank about every 4-5th fill up. When I traded in my 2006 Kia Spectra three years ago, it had 354,000 on it and never burned any oil. Great stuff !

I add a bottle to a tankful once in a while but otherwise no additives. I run 87 octane and consider the slightly additional cost of the Chevron an investment and so far it's paid off. I could feel the difference after just one tank. I continued to use MMO in the gas and oil and the engine snapped back to running smooth and powerful. It started quickly and the throttle response was smooth. MMO was developed by the same guys who made the Marvel-Scheibler carburetor for light aircraft engines. I am a gas tanker driver for 25 years now. When I did Chevron stations in a Chevron takeover from another brand, Conoco or whomever, we would add raw techron into the tanks. 1 quart would treat 3000 gallons of gasoline. When Chevron change the techron formula they gave the older formula to the driver's to use. A quart bottle would last me years. Anded my own to each tank. Had a chemist do the math for how much to add to 20 gallons of gas, then I doubled it. I changed heads on my car for better performance and was shocked at how clean the valves, pistons and chambers were. I rebuild the Edelbrock carburetor and it really was clean... I have a snowblower my late father bought in 1978. I've owned it and used it every year since 1986. The carburetor has never been off or apart. It was running so poorly that I had to keep the choke on about 90% of the way so it would draw enough fuel to run, but then with so little air it didn't make much power. I put Gumout with PEA in the tank, not a lot, maybe an ounce or so, and started using the snowblower. In about a minute it almost died - because suddenly it was getting fuel through the carb properly! I opened the choke fully and the thing ran like it hadn't in years. Took just a minute or two to get this 42 year old carburetor doing its job properly again.

As an OEM automotive engineer, I worked for many years with colleagues at Chevron and Techron is a very good product. I don't know about the formulation today but it used to be a chemical called poly butyl ether amine. This is an expensive additive to manufacture but highly effective. I have used it in my own vehicle by (1) filling the tank and then (2) adding one full bottle of Techron. In the past, I have done this on two consecutive tankfuls and it makes a difference. One has to be careful not to overdose the fuel with additives because this can potentially thicken the motor oil and cause issues like valve sticking. Modern fuel injectors are very resistant to plugging/reduced flow and most ordinary gasolines have additives sufficient for adequate cleaning. Fuel injection cleaning at a service appointment is not needed and a complete waste of money. Techron helps keep intake valve and combustion chamber deposits at bay - these can cause cold driveability issues and increased emissions. There are a number of good SAE papers on this topic. Currently I just use Amoco/BP Ultimate gasoline. The base fuel is refined using a proprietary process removing impurities and it has a very good additive package for cleanliness. It is the best gasoline and engines run exclusively on this are spotlessly clean internally even after 70-80,000 miles. It is expensive but one gets what he pays for. Good video and test methodology. Thank You! 🙂👍

That's great advice for older port fuel injected engines but that's not the reality with GDI engines. The cleanest fuel in the world will still leave a GDI engine with filthy intake valves and intake ports because the fuel simply doesn't reach them to clean them.

I use Techron 2-3 times per year now. The one thing I notice is that the engine always seems to run smoother especially at idle. I have used Marvel Mystery oil in older engines to de-carbonize the upper cylinders by dumping it into the carb while revving the engine while it's running. It smokes like crazy, but the engine ran great afterwards. That all stopped with the advent of catalytic converter equipped engines. So much for progress!

It's american gasoline - full of shitty additives to make the mix leaner and get more money from each barrel of processed high octane fuel - "pissing in the soup" as it's coloquially referred to - wouldn't surprise me at all if someone said regular gas is only 70% fuel and 30% additives. This is why for years now I've been running my tank down and filling with higher octane premium 1/5 fills as the engine runs a bit hotter and burns some of the crap off - which is basically what these additives do as well as having the solvents to loosen the deposits - but I also generally only do a premium fill when I know I've got a reasonable amount of motorway driving coming up to keep the engine running at full temps for a while to facilitate the carbon burn off.

Original fuel pump lasted 216k miles. I'm surprised about the Techron. I'm a GM mechanic since 2000. Years ago we had several problems with fuel causing issues in South Texas. GM came up with a process to put their chemical "Top Engine Cleaner" in a measured amount of gas and flush it directly through the fuel injectors w/ the feed and return lines disconnected and blocked. You would then add a bottle of Techron to the tank. As mechanics working on flat rate, the " unofficial" repair was to mix the Techron and Top engine cleaner 50/50 and force that through the injectors. It was magical! I've had several Trailblazer injectors that would not flow any fuel at all return to a near new level of flow. I also personally used one bottle of Techron with 5 gallons of gas to clean up motorcycle carbs. You had to run a fresh gas tank after as it would eat important stuff at that concentration. With great success I bought motorcycles that would barely run, ran that mixture for a tank or two, and then sold them when I was done having fun with them. I even had a case where that mixture cleaned things up so we'll a Kawasaki intake valve hung open a little. I'm guessing from lack of fuel lubrication. Pulled it all apart and everything was so shiny and new it looked like it had no miles on it. Back together and she ran like new and still does as far as I know. I'm aware that our mixture was well above any recommendations. I'm also aware that when you pay mechanics Flat Rate they will do almost anything to make a problem go away and stay gone. Really like your videos, Thanks!

They are all basically the same, I work at a refinery in Philadelphia, Not every oil company owns refineries in certain areas and buys the fuel from others to fulfill the local demand. The Sunoco (Sun Oil Company) in Philadelphia provides gas not only for Sunoco but also Shell, Exxon and all the "no name" brands at the small mom and pop stations in the Philadelphia region. Its cheaper for Shell and Exxon to buy wholesale from Sunoco and fill their stations than it is to have the Shell and Exxon refineries truck fuel 500 miles to every station. Exxon does this in the mid west and Shell does the same on the west coast. So if you go to any top tier brand gas station, pretty good chance it was refined by a different oil company refinery in that area.

I've been working on engines for over 20 years and keep all 3 of these products in my garage! In fact, they are just about the ONLY oil/fuel additives I keep and use! This is how I have used them (with great results for years): Marvel: strictly for fogging/winterizing small engines & outboard motors, both 2 and 4 stroke. I add a bunch to the final tank of gas in any piece of equipment I'm running out of gas for long term storage/winterizing. After running out of gas, I'll drain the carb and pull the spark plugs. I have Marvel in a spray bottle and give several heavy sprays in each hole & crank the engine over to circulate it. If access to the carb air inlet is easy, I'll give a few squirts in there too. If it's impossible to get all fuel of the tank after running out of gas, I'll put a little in there too, to stabilize the remaining gas. Techron (I only buy the concentrate) I only use this in cars. Usually once or twice a year. I like to throw it in before I do a long highway trip, like 300+ miles, to really get the engine hot and running under highway load for extended periods. I've had noticeable and measurable results with better MPG, acceleration, idling, etc on many cars, and have had the same results from family and friends. SeaFoam: I only use this for small engines & outboards, 2 and 4 stroke, added to the fuel. I tend to be heavy-handed when adding this to gas for small engines, especially 4 stroke. Noticeable improvements with engines running. Great video - thanks for taking the time to do this! I agree with some other comments that the push mower engine with a light constant load may not yield the most dramatic results, but they were still very interesting!

So I put some in my 4 cylinder car (still 1/2 teaspoon), there again quicker and smoother response when I hit the gas. I also noticed it started better even on cold winter mornings. Interesting test! I have been using Techron since 1984 starting with a 1983 Isuzu Impulse which required mid grade fuel in order to run. After several tanks it would develop an annoying hesitation. The addition of Techron would resolve this problem. I have seen Techron solve many fuel related problems in a wide variety of engine since then and always keep some on hand and use it as a periodic additive. My view, great stuff!

Gasoline is fungible. The difference in fuel brands are the additives usually added as the fuel is put in a tanker to be delivered. Top tier fuels have the cleaners in them. Costco is a fungible fuel from any refinery or fuel distribution center. To achieve Costco's top tier rating is by adding the cleaner in at the gas station. Costco purchases a bulk cleaner and has it delivered and put in a separate underground tank. The cleaner is simply added after the fuel is delivered. The top tier fuel brands, have a policy, to always have the fuel cleaner additive. The non branded fuels are the same fuel, within an octane rating, without the fuel cleaning additive. Please note that, from the same fuel station, different formulas to achieve same octane can and will be different at each and every fuel delivery. Please also note that the reed vapor pressure is also different at each load. The vapor pressure is normally changed to accommodate different temperatures. In conclusion, I hope your testing is from the same batch of fuel. Fuel itself, is difficult itself to be considered a constant in scientific testing. A recommended test would simply be to test fuels from different top tier and non top tier fuel stations. There is also a new fuel tier 3 rating. Another test would be to check out the new fuel tier 3 fuel. Enough rambling. I do like your testing methods. I do not expect you to test the each batch of fuel. Keep up the great work. Simply adding information from a Gear Head.

ALL gasoline today (By EPA mandate in 1996) is required to have a minimum level of detergents so there are none sold without fuel cleaning additives. The different brands are free to add more than the minimum and that is what separates the "Top Tier" brands from the others.

@@EristiCat former fuel delivery driver here. The operative word is SOLD without additives. Base products can be shipped from the refinery to retailers like Costco who then add their own additives in bulk. I used to deliver to a Costco.
@billwilson36094 жыл бұрын
I doubt if the EPA allows fuel station operators to add anything to the products after being delivered into the storage tanks. The additive packages are metered in at the loading terminals. Some years ago I repainted the loading dock at a customer's small refinery that made good money refining crappy crude that nobody else wanted into racing gasoline for cars, motorcycles and boats while acting as a loading terminal for the majors and independents. For that he used the big storage tanks to hold the basic stock gasoline piped in from Houston then metered in the desired additive packages and ethanol during loading. The majors supplied their own proprietary additive packages while the independent stations could select the A, B or C generic additive packages (the dockhand just had to turn a dial that had the three settings). The loading process gets the packages mixed with the fuel good enough so it can naturally disperse itself thru-out the load during transport and finally fully mixed in during unloading into the storage tanks.

The main differences between brands of motor oil come from their additives. Love all your content. One thing that may have been overlooked is how well these products clean the back of the intake valve. This is where carbon can get thick and impede airflow into the cylinder. Seafoam's primary "active" ingredient is naptha. Naptha does dissolve carbon. Take a heavily carboned up piston put it Seafoam and check back after 2, 48 and 96 hours. (Seafoam was invented because in the first half of the 20th century, 2 stoke engine had to run "rich" mixture of oil. The oil never burned completely and left carbon deposit in the cylinder and on the rings. The rings would eventually stick and score the cylinder.) Techron is Chevron Corporation's name for polyetheramine (PEA). PEA is a good solvent (will dissolve most solids in a fuel system). Two very different chemicals for two different jobs,

I don’t know, It seems for me that it goes like this: Techron, seafoam, and marvel mystery. Since all cars that have direct injection engines have carbon build up issues, these additives might help stave off the dealers “fuel system cleaning” jobs they try and sell you on.
@akbychoice6 жыл бұрын
Should have tried all three together and see what the results would be.
@JasonW.6 жыл бұрын
No amount of fuel additive will make any difference on direct injection vehicles unless they are hybrid direct & port injected. My 2015 3.5 Ecofart has no way to clear out carbon build up on intake valves outside of injecting seafoam into the air intake. Doing that can and has been shown to burn up the turbos.

You're wasting your money with Octane Booster. The only reason you should ever increase the octane content of your fuel is if your engine is detonating due to increased compression (whether that be by mechanical design or by so much carbon deposit that your combustion chamber space is reduced to the point that it's increased the compression)
@elixier333 жыл бұрын
Octane Booster? LOL shows how little you know about what your actually doing. If your having to increase the Octane your not using your car / bile right and putting the wrong fuel in it to begin with., No one needs Octane Boosters sorry kido your wasting your money and it makes you look like an idiot!
@whodat91983 жыл бұрын
@@elixier33 Modern NA cars can run 11.5 to 13:1 compression ratio, many new cars are also turbo'd. CA premium is pure crap and only 91 octane when most imports are designed to run on 93-95 RON+MON/2. There's a lot of reasons for people to use a quality octane booster unlike old timers like you with their 8:1 pushrod small block tractor motors from 60 years ago.

the seafoam company says you cant add too much seafoam to you're fueling system.. in fact! adding more cleans it better!!, i want to see what happens if you run a gasoline engine on seafoam alone! that would be a awesome video
@jbpooh5 жыл бұрын
I know from experience that to much seafoam directly into an engine will mess it up. We used a bottle hooked to a vacuum line to clean the intake and upper part of the engine by letting it suck it in while running. Works fine with Techron, STP, etc but us loving Seafoam thought it would be a good idea to try it. Wrong move. It cleaned this ladies engine to well. She brought it back the next day complaining of it smoking badly and sounded funny. After pulling the intake we found out it turned everything inside the engine whiteish and after deeper inspection it had cleaned the cylinders so much it was blowing oil by the rings and had eaten up some gaskets. Expensive experiment for us. Lol. Great stuff when used like instructions say to, but can cause issues if not used correctly. Just my experience with it, could be different for others though.
@jbpooh5 жыл бұрын
@Why SirTanYoo 50/50 mix or mixed with gas is ok. We run the cleaners through a vacuum line on top of the intake so it's sucking it in directly on top of the cylinders. Had it been a carburetored vehicle it probably would've been fine, but being fuel injected the computer will lean it out thinking it's running rich and cause the seafoam to be run almost full strength. Moral of the story is follow manufacturers recommendations and it'll work fine. Experiences may vary though by vehicle.

I was told different about seafoam. Alot geos along way. I just add the whole bottle to an empty tank or half a tank and then fuel up with top tier fuel
@jbpooh5 жыл бұрын
That's fine that way. We were sucking it in via a vacuum line so it cleans directly the intake and upper manifold. Straight seafoam in that instance was to strong.

Great video, as always. When they say "cleans in one tank", that is probably based on a full can in the average cars fuel tank. Then it soaks and cleans for one to two weeks of city commute on average before the next fill up. That scenario would allow more time to soak clean. In small engines like lawn mowers, I run cleaner thru while I use it. Then fill up again with cleaner and allow the engine to idle. That allows the idle circuit to get the cleaner. (Most people are wide open or shut off, never idle) Then without running the carb dry shut it off to soak until the next week. Long term storage? Run the carb dry. The idle circuit is the smallest passage and easiest to plug. Once it plugs small engine performance drops fast.

I bought a 2017 GTI last year with 34k miles equipped with a DSG. It performed great with the exception of a hesitation when trying to accelerate quickly from a stop which was/is very unnerving especially making left turns in front of oncoming traffic. I had VW check it out twice during scheduled service and they claimed they could never duplicate the problem. After reading that these engines are bad about carbon buildup I decided to but two bottles of VW fuel system cleaner in it at $20 a bottle. I ran through two complete tanks and the problem persisted. I learned to live with it and drove 10,000 miles over the past year. I always run 93 octane fuel and all maintenance is up to date. This week I bought a 20 ounce bottle of Techron and added it to a full tank. According to the directions I should have used their smaller bottle, but oh well. My car had not hesitated once since adding the Techron and normally I would experience it twice a day. I have only run through a half tank and it will be interesting to see how it performs on the next tank of fuel only. I failed to mention I had new plugs installed on the last service.

Excellent idea to run the experiment without additives. Another great video. ^_^ Since I sell a lot of injector cleaner, I gotta say that in Houston with its high humidity and bumpy roads the big three are Seafoam, Lucas, and Marvel's Mystery Oil (I'm biased in favor of Lucas). I'm not a big fan of Techron, STP, or Gumout. Every once in a while, we get a great grandpa who swears by Berryman.🤔 These fuel system cleaners work so well that I over did it and all the gunk in my fuel lines got washed into my injectors and clogged 'em. My mechanic told me to get it over 60mph (I'm usually under 40mph) to blow out my injectors. They work but don't overdo it.😉

I've used Techron begining in 1981 as a technician at a Mercedes Benz dealership to clean fuel injectors, which were causing rough idle problems in that 380 V8 engines. I worked with a Clayton Dynamometer and Sun equipment. The Techron did clear poor spraying injectors and smoothed out idle. At the time it was the only additive of any sort approved by M-BENZ NA. So maybe it's better as a fuel system cleaner than a combustion area decarbonized. Yours is a Gold Standard test channel. Keep the faith .👍👍

There is a very new techron that I have only seen in one store and its a techron high mileage for engines over 75k miles. Several years ago I bought a well used GMC Safari to accommodate my growing family. Engine performance was disappointing at best. Some friends convinced us to travel with them on vacation, which we had difficulty following them on the Interstate. Fortunately I had added two containers of Techron to our tank before our departure. After several miles we noticed faint smoke coming from our exhaust, followed by a loud pop like a back fire, then power that the van never had before and no more smoke. We could follow our friends easily after that. This is what I was thinking 🤔, I am not sure whether these tests are very accurate with respect to the conditions that each product was design to work under, let alone if there are special circumstances that one could manipulate to increase the efficacy of each product. As you described in your experience, you went on a vacation with apparently a significant amount of driving on the highway which, as we all know, alone it is called an "Italian tune up". On top of the already established effects of driving long distances at highway speeds, you added this fuel cleaner with clearly had an effect on you engine. See how many variables??!! I am not sure this video can assert or accurately predict which product is "best" under the variables he has chosen. It could be ignorance on my part but can we possibly and accurately assume that this engine he utilized is a small equivalent sample of what a larger vehicular engine is like? I suppose the question is whether we are comparing apples to apples?? IMO, I dont think so and I am not sure.

The incident happened during the first hour of travel. My opinion is that it opened a restriction in the catalytic converter, but that is only a theory of which I have no proof. Well I had a Ford Ranger years ago and it was running terrible. 4.0 Liter direct injection. The guy at the part store hooked up his computer and it was a misfire on one of the cylinders and suggested sea foam and since he wasn't busy he had a trick to show me. He unhooked a vacuum line or something in the fuel rail and stuck the can right on the hose and I feathered the throttle to keep it running. Within 10 seconds the parking lot was full of smoke from the tail pipe. When the can was empty he put the line back on and there was a tiny trail of smoke, but my check engine light went off. He told me to drive it and the smoke trail should be gone in about 20 minutes. He was right, the smoke was gone and it ran like a new truck. Since then I've always thrown a can in my car and truck 3 or 4 times a year. I can't really tell a difference, but I have not had a problem like before since.
