To clarify he is using multiple techniques which is why you are getting confused. Strumming:- Playing more than two strings, very easily recognizable as the classic fan movement in right hand. Picking:- This is called so, because he has a plastic chip in his hand called as pick. When he is plucking the strings with the pick to play indiviual notes this is picking. Tapping:- As simple as it sounds, you tap the fretboard instead of picking it, either by using bare hands or tapping the pick against the fretboard. Sweep picking:- This is a combination between Picking and Strumming, you pick multiple notes but you cover up the sounds so that it sounds like you just played indiviual notes very fast. You are being confused because he usually taps with his pick when the entire part consists of tapping, but in other cases he uses his free middle finger in right hand to tap after picking a note. Bending:- The part where he moves the string up. You can also do this while tapping because you can move the string up with your middle finger.

Also worth mentioning altho pedantic tapping is essentially two things combined but because you’re doing it with the right hand we just refer to it as tapping. (Note will be referring to a single fret) The two things being hammer ons and pull offs. So when someone picks a note but then hammers onto a note while it is still ringing you can get that new note to play and if you slightly bend down and release you’ll have a pull off so essentially strum once and get three notes. Pushing the strings is called “Bending” or “Bending the strings” your pretty much playing a note and in stead of moving your fingers to a higher fret, you bend the string for smoother transition to a higher pitched note.

He was sweeping the strings into when you asked if hes picking, im pretty sure he was tapping his pick on top of the strings while tapping the frets with his other hand. He could have been tapping with his fingers as well its hard to tell, you can do it either way. there are honestly so many different techniques on the guitar to get different sounds and to accomplish different things. brushing with your thumb while picking to get pinch harmonics, bending strings, whammy bar, hammer ons (where you strum/pick the first note then move your finger to the second note without picking it). Then even more expertise guitarist will use the guitar as a drum while tapping and picking Ive even see people use the tune knobs to get different up and down sounds. The possibilities on the guitar are freaking endless i love it.

To answer one of the questions you had, I dont see someone else already answering this. at 5:15, There is a technique called hybrid picking where you grip the pick with your thumb and pointer and leave your other 3 fingers free to pluck other strings at the same time, I dont think theres ever really a time where you use your thumb on your picking hand to play notes.

It’s called alternate picking where you use both a pick and your finger. When he is using both hands on the fretboard he is using hammer-ons and pull offs where you press down hard and kinda wrap your hand around a string and pull off of it

There's also a technique called hybrid picking where you use a pick on the top strings and your fingers on the bottom strings so it's like a bass progression with a top melody at the same time, if that makes sense

He's bending the strings to get that higher tone; but the even CRAZIER thing is what you *don't see*, he's lightly touching his thumb to the string which gives you that high pitch scream (called pinch harmonics). Notice it at 8:34 -- you can hear the bend and then shortly after you hear that high pitch scream; if you look superrrrr closely you can barely make it out. As someone who plays a little, it's insane to see his technicality with guitar. The fact that you can't exactly pick out what he's doing unless you look/listen really hard just shows how talented the dude is! Absolute madlad!

Theres lots of people trying to simplify bending and whammy bars but essentially the tighter a string is the higher the note. So bending the strings is just creating more tension on the strings so you have 1/4 bends 1/2 bends (essentially any bend till it breaks) that are just part way between notes then you have a whammy bar that will release tension and lower the strings frequency of vibration lowering the tone of the note.

Pick tapping is tapping with the pick. Finger tapping is using 2nd hand to tap...well hammer on pull off method to acquire 2nd sound. And the high note sound when he bends strings is called muted harmonic. Basically strumming hand picks string and barely touches it with his thumb to provide a natural harmonic sound. Sorry if its too complicated but they're very advanced techniques lol

The metal bar he's pushes down(or up depending if it's a floyd rose bridge which can go backwards) is a whammy bar and it basically loosens the strings and it automatically goes back up due to the tremolo pulling it back When he pushes a string up or down on the fretboard that is called bending. You can't bend down, only up. Tapping is where his picking hand is now tapping frets along with the left hand by pressing it with decent force and release it so it rings the note that would play if you didn't tap it Picking is where he holds the, well, pick and hits the strings. Chords are notes in an arrangement within a key. Sweep picking is where he looks like he's strumming slowly and moving his left hand fingers accordingly to the picking

"jamming the strings together" is called a bend. it makes the string tighter, so the pitch goes up. so not only can he play all kinds of notes that fit the tune and scale instantly, but he can even start a note on the wrong fret, but bend it up to a higher note... since you have to start the note on a lower note and bend it up to the higher note. You also have to bend it the right amount or it will be out of tune. its not easy to do.

Doo has a dope tapping technique, I'm still not sure if he uses his the pick or his finger (I imagine his finger but I've never been able to do it like he can, his Jordan by buckethead solo he did in one of these baffles me. Buckethead himself uses 4 fingers to tap which is one of the things that makes him so iconic as well as his awesome use of chromatic and just unorthodox playing but doo does it with that same technique and dayum that boy has some talent to pull that off like that lol he's my favorite 😊

It looked like he was using some form of hybrid picking where he may be tapping with his finger or the pick, the reason why you would tap a string higher up the neck is to hit an extra note that would be more tasteful than just playing normally. Pushing the string up is called a bend. When you are bending a note it’s either a whole or a half step up. It’s just a tasteful way to get to another note Picking and hitting the string with your thumb creates a pinch harmonic

Here’s some quick guitar terminology- Bending is when the strings are pushed up and it makes the note higher He wasn’t strumming or picking, he was tapping the strings to make a note when he touches it and when he lifts off, Van Halen kinda came up with it. Dooo sometimes finger picks, but to get high squeals he uses a technique called pinch harmonics by hitting the string with his thumb at the same time. Sorry for writing an essay but I love guitar 😂
