I've recently overclocked my 5800 x to 4.9Ghz one core boost and 4.6 GHz all core. I did this by enabling PBO2 in the BIOS forcing stock boost behavior but reducing the voltages slightly to also reduce heat and power draw. I then increased the offset by 50 megahertz. So ultimately I'm using slightly less power than stock and I've increased the boost clocks. One of the coolest overclocks I think I've ever achieved.

Good content. Hope you get a lot more subs and keep making great content! I've been building PC's for 25 years, but, the last one I built was like over a decade ago. My last pc was actually a laptop that lasted me 7 years (Gigabyte P34Gv2 with i7-4710hq, Nvidia 860m 4gb, 16gb 1600 ram, 256gb SSD). Laptop was a beast! Had to take battery out after a couple years (but I used it as a desktop anyways). The desktop I just built has the 5800x, 32gb 3200 ram, 1tb Gen 4nvme, 1030 2gb (I skimped on the graphics card for now due to pricing. I figured paying $75 over msrp for a lower end card, was better than paying $400 over msrp for a high end card. It is about equal to the 860m I had so it works just fine for me for now). I rarely game anymore, but sometimes I'll open up some cs go, fortnight, cod, or the newer diablo. All work smooth. For video editing, I for sure notice the difference in rendering times; a 1 hour render, now takes like 15 minutes.
@TheTechTank
@TheTechTank 2 жыл бұрын
Really appreciate that, man! I've actually never owned a notebook with even half the power of your old one 😂 it's the next big upgrade I want to do. Definitely a smart move going with the 1030 until prices come down - I would've done the same. I'd never be able to justify paying the current hyper-inflated prices. At least the rest of your system will be set for many years to come, so when prices do come down you'll be good to go! And yeah the 5800X is a beast for rendering coming from my old 1700.

Now that Intel Alder Lake is out, 5800x still makes sense for people who already have an AM4 motherboard which supports it. You can go from a Ryzen 2000 or 3000 series CPU to the 5800x on a B450 board, and be set for the next several years.

Sure, but futureproofing isn't a sure thing since we can't predict the future. The 5800X will probably still be relevant even five years from now, but so could the 5600X etc. so buying for the sake of futureproofing isn't always the best idea. If that makes sense.

Thank you for this follow up video. This helped me make my decision between a 5600x and 5800x. I went with a 5800x because the price went down a ton. the 5600x was going for $300 and the 5800x went down to $341 on amazon and walmart. An extra $40 just seemed like a no brainer for a better cpu. If it was an extra $100 to $150 then that would be too much

I just bought one that was damaged from eBay. It must have been a younger person or a kid. He stated that it had bent and broken pins. I've felt with that before and had pretty good luck fixing pins so I gave it a chance. I looked at the pictures he sent that were magnified the best he could. I saw a few barely bent pins and no missing ones. I could tell no one had tried to work on it. The chip was pretty much perfect when I got it. I threw it under my magnification and found 3 pins barely bent. It took less than 5 mins to fix it. Works perfect. I don't understand why he didn't try to fix it. I offered it back to him at the same price but he already got a new CPU. I felt kinda bad I bought that chip for 70 dollars and if he would have just taken it to any repair shop they probably would have fixed it for free. He couldn't believe you could fix pins that were bent flat if your careful and replacing a pin is just practice. Get a old CPU and start practicing. You'll save a lot of money if you learn how to work on your own stuff. I've fixed several gpus also that just needed small things but practice soldering before you ever try.

I'm thinking of buying this CPU right now, this video comes in handy. But one thing I'm considering is emulation, which is consistently ignored by ALL hardware reviewers. You could argue it's included in the "gaming" category, but it has its own specifics. Emulators require different balances of CPU/GPU performance, so seeing some related benchmarks would be really helpful.
@TheTechTank
@TheTechTank 2 жыл бұрын
Noted. I'll look into whether there are any reliable benchmarks out there for emulation, or at least something similar. I don't recall seeing any from the reviewers I watch either. Kind of weird.
@sovo1212
@sovo1212 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheTechTank It would be like a standard gaming benchmark, you should just test the most popular/demanded games, which are usually the most demanding ones (i.e. Mario Odyssey for Yuzu, Zelda BOTW for Cemu, Uncharted 3/TLOU for RPCS3, Red Dead Redemption for Xenia). I have to confirm it, but I think at least some of these emulators allow you to uncap the FPS, otherwise you will be stuck with the usual 30/60 FPS cap. While this might make games go out of sync and run faster than normal, it's extremely useful for benchmark comparisons.
@TheTechTank
@TheTechTank 2 жыл бұрын
@@sovo1212 That method along with all of the required prep to properly benhcmark is probably why most reviewers don't do it. It's a ton of effort for something only a small percentage of people will actually care about.

I have been struggling with my PC build for literal months, having never built a PC before, this first build was/is truly meant to last me years as I’d been jumping from one mid-end gaming laptop to another, it made sense to just make a space and build a proper powerhouse Desktop. I was having issues playing on a 5800x, MSI RTX 3080, 64gb (4x8gb) 3600 ram PC, and at some point the heating issue with this CPU got so bad I could barely play low end games on medium settings without struggling. I was distraught and bought more fans to max out the case and reoriented my AIO. Finally having something seemingly normal on FPS for the same settings felt good, but it made no sense, thought I had gotten the worst luck in the silicon lottery. As it turns out undervolting just saved me so much money and grief as I had been looking at just upgrading to a 5900 or 5950, whatever I could find eventually, to hopefully fix the issue and just max everything as much as possible. My temps are finally reasonable and my system is running buttery smooth as Ryzen and Nvidia intended with max settings on all games I have stored in the ol’ steam library. My fix was recent, however I quickly came to this same conclusion of “is it actually good?” once seeing how the CPU performed normally and further researching why it ran as hot as it did. I have to say I agree fully in saying that if people are looking for high end performance at a lighter budget then this CPU really does have a good spirit, but its body wasn’t optimized for that, hence the 5900 being the most in demand CPU because it has more SA for heat dissipation. Regardless, 5800 + a simple undervolt and a decent cooler = one hell of a gaming CPU good for people who like to dabble outside of gaming
@TheTechTank
@TheTechTank 2 жыл бұрын
Really happy you managed to find a fix that worked for you, I've heard others also getting some really good results from undervolting the chip. What AIO are you using? A decent one should be more than enough to keep the 5800X in check... If the cooler's fine, it could've been that your motherboard had MCE on and pushed the chip much higher than it's supposed to go.

Unless you're super interested in the underlying science and all of that, then you really don't have to dig that deep, lol. Just the basics will get you all the way there. As for where to buy, and how much you should be paying, it largely depends on the country you're in. For instance, here in South Africa because of certain taxes and companies taking their cut throughout the chain, we get completely screwed over when it comes to the cost of electronics.

Honestly, both Amazon and Newegg seem to consistently list parts for the price they "should be selling for". Sometimes prices do go wild with super popular parts, or during shortages like we're seeing right now. GPU prices are still insane pretty much everywhere for instance. I think the Honey browser extension actually has a feature that lets you see the price changes of specific products over time, so you can see what the lowest price for them "should be". PCPartPicker has a more robust version of that: pcpartpicker.com/trends/ Other than that, you might want to keep an eye on the LTT forums. Not sure if they list deals on there or not, but it's probably the best tech forum out there. There are websites like that that will give you a performance estimate based on certain parts and the games you want to play, but I'm not sure how reliable they are. This one seems like one of the better ones: howmanyfps.com/

Thinking of upgrading to this from a 2600, I have a 5500xt so I'm not cpu bottlenecked in most games, (some, I am though.) but it really crumbles when I try to do heavy multitasking like recording at the same time or running multiple games at once (FFXIV & Bluestacks as an example) I have the budget for it over the 5600x and I assume the extra two cores will help with what I want to do
@TheTechTank
@TheTechTank 2 жыл бұрын
If you're struggling with multitasking, then the 5800X is definitely going to make a much bigger difference than the 5600X. With the SMT, it's more like four extra cores and that's going to help a lot.

I got the 5800x at launch and dont regret it, I upgraded from the 3700x due to playing VR on the HTC vive pro and the difference is huge. Was not sure the 5600x would do what I wanted but knew the 5800x would and did not go the 5900x because the word was it was a bit slower due to using 2 chiplets instead of one.

fun fact. a lot of people are unaware including many reviewers that the initial batch of 5800x and 5900x were actual dual ccd versions which AMD later revealed. and there will be a software release which includes a full unlocking of those processors. so the 5800x will ultimated become a 16core and in essence become the epyc version. and the 5900x will become the model higher than the current 5950x. they did it to the specifically the 6900xt gpu. you know the XTX and XTXH variants. i think amd is starting to transition to into using software to unlock more features. good vid btw
@TheTechTank

Thanks, man. While it's entirely possible that many of the 5K Ryzen chips have an "extra" CCX (some people having proven it via certain tools), those are most likely disabled by AMD because a validation failure. We've seen this in GPUs and CPUs for years now. Even if it was possible to reverse this, AMD wouldn't allow it on their end as it could make the chips unstable, and would threaten their higher-end chip sales. Both of which would be bad for business.

Went from 3700x to 5800x. I feel like this CPU will serve well for about 5 years... But... I will upgrade before that for sure ahaha!!! I have a dual tower air cooler installed, and the temp tops at 72c-73c at 100% load. My computer case is opened. I have no case-fans running, so, it's very very quiet, unless I load the CPU. The double-CPU-cooler-fans are idling at very low speed, unless I render a video in DaVinci Resolve. Even though the side panel is opened, the case is positioned near a wall (3 inches away) so the inside of the computer is still protected from accidents. Heat dissipates upward by convection. Very silent and efficient.

Had my 5800x in Asus Tuf B550M motherboard for about 2 years now. I make YT videos in 4k and I play some games (mostly Fortnite, CS GO, & Hogwarts Legacy - I have a great Viewsonic 27" 1080x60 monitor - I am oldschool and 1080 looks great to me, and it lets me play 60fps in any game on max settings - I also have a 12" 720p second monitor.). I have 32gb ram, gen 4 NVME, & 3060ti. I kept my last computer for over 7 years. This one is 2 years old, and feels like brand new still. Never in the past could I alt + tab between games and internet browser in a flash; literally instant. Anything I throw at this is so quick to respond. Sure, a 5900x or 5950x would give me a bit faster video rendering times. But from the computer I came from, this is blazing fast (and about 1/3rd the rendering time of my last pc). This has lasted me 2 years, and I expect 5+ more years. I doubt I'll go above 4k for YT videos and personal recordings for many years. And I don't game as hard as I used to, but I like to get a new game here or there. Basically, when I cannot play games at 1080x60 at a constant fps of 60 on medium settings, then I'll build again.

At launch, every reviewer said to go for the 5900x instead if you want something better than the 5600x. But the 5900x was out of stock for ~6 months after launch and when it did eventually become available, the price was inflated. The 5800x on the other hand, was discounted basically from the start because of all the reviews which said not to buy it. I found it was actually the best value of the 3 once the market prices settled.
@TheTechTank
@TheTechTank 2 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't blame reviewers for that. Impossible to predict exactly what the market will do after a product goes on shelves. Fundamentally when it originally launched the 5800X presented the least value of the three, but I'm very happy that that's not the case anymore.
@seismica
@seismica 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheTechTank Oh yes of course, not blaming reviewers, based on the MSRP of the three, the reviews at launch were fully justified. Whilst it was acknowledged that the 5800x was a good CPU, it was clear the pricing was not right. I was just meaning that due to low demand for 5800x, the adjustment in the market value was very quick. You could argue this low demand was in part a consequence of the reviews, which is a good thing. I think I paid £100 under MSRP for my 5800x back in January 2021, because I could not find a 5900x anywhere (It was harder to get hold of than a GPU). The 5600x was also selling above MSRP, at least in the UK.

I’m going to build my own PC. I’m going with the 5800x and b450 motherboard. I’m just worried that other parts might not support it? What other parts need to be in to support it well enough or is it just motherboard?

Yip, pretty much just the motherboard. You'll want reasonably fast RAM to go with the chip (3200MHz and up), a decent cooler, and a good graphics card to get the most out of it, but you shouldn't be worried about parts not "supporting" it.

I am also planning to get a 5800x. But I am confused with all the thermal issues, High temps that reviewers mentioned. Is it really a issue? And can you please recommend me a good AIO cooler for the 5800x? Thanks.😊

I'm not having any thermal issues with the chip. The only time I ever ran into higher than normal temps was when I overclocked too high. A 280mm AIO from a reputable brand, or high-end air cooler will handle it just fine.

AMD says that operating temps of 90 C are perfectly normal for this chip. Tho it's easy to undervolt a bit in the BIOS with curve optimizer and reduce temps by around 10 C.

So.e of the first chips for sure we're boosting well over 4.7 closer to 5!! And I'm pretty sure that's why the thermal issues were an "issue" I'll be using a vetroo v5 air cooler in white with a push pull config. I doubt I'll see more than 75 degrees under gaming load from the research I've done

This is really helpful in deciding whether or not to buy this CPU. Currently, they’re available for €259,- and I have been looking to upgrade my CPU for a small while now. Guess it’s going to be the 5800X then…

They're really great value right now, even better than when I made this video.

Also just snagged a asus rog strix rtx 3070 ti. Little warm in the case but that is becaude i need to add some intake fans on my rad. (Its front mounted due to clearance issues) so my 5800x gets a little warmer like 60 on load and the gpu is around 70 at load. But adding 2 more intake fans should help that lower the internal case temps.

Those extra fans will definitely help, but 70 isn't all that bad for the new RTX cards. The fans are set really low for temperatures at 70 and under.

Snagged the 5800X for $300 at Microcenter. With the rise of CPU based Crypto mining again, I really don't want to wait another year to upgrade from a 2700X.

Are you satisfied with the 5800x? I just bought one yesterday to replace my 2700x. I upgraded my monitor to a massive Samsung G9 ultrawide in a big holiday sale last last year without fully contemplating how much more demanding that +7K resolution was going to be. Upgrades to 6900XT and 5800x should address that. Hopefully.
